{Finished} The early birds
Every since she started coming to school here Shauna has found herself studying very hard, going to bed very early, attending classes while also participating in any and all the Errands she could get her hands on. The last Errand in which she did she actually found very relaxing; she never thought she'd ever be writing a novel or even parts of it but that's what the last errand was. She found herself working on it while her roommates were sleeping during times when she was woken up from a nightmare.Interacting with @Ruthie Greer
Not long after the last errand ended however she went to her most recent Herbology class to see yet another small errand posted. Now normally she was a bit of a loner when it came to things such as this but this was Herbology and she knew someone who was just as much into Herbology and Potions as she is. Directly after class that day herself and Ruthie Greer agreed to meet the very next morning at the gardens so they could help their professor with the drying of the herbs.
It was so early that the sun was just barely starting to peek over the horizon as Shauna squeezed her way out of the castle doors getting her booty to the gardens. She wrapped her cloak around her body as the November morning breeze nipped at her skin "Merlin it's already starting to get cold…" she spoke to herself not yet seeing Ruthie now wondering if they should have met in the common room instead.

Early starts had become a regular goings-on for Ruthie, mostly because Quidditch practice had a habit starting before classes. As a result, the early start required for the current month's errand didn't really phase her. It was a little weird, however, to be leaving the tower in her ordinary clothes rather than her practice robes. Instead, she wore jeans and an oversized navy blue jumper. Still, she brought her winter Hogwarts cloak with her though she didn't expect to need it--she was accustomed to the Scottish winters and November was nothing really. And instead of a broom, she grabbed a small hand-weaved basket off her vanity. Normally, it carried sherbet lemons and small knick-knacks, but it would do for collecting plants just as well.
She found Shauna by the entrance to the garden with her winter cloak wrapped around tight. "Cold already?" she asked in a friendly manner, aware that she held her own cloak in the crook of her arm. To be fair the wee hours were always more brisk before the temperature would settle out for the rest of the day. "Moving will get your blood flowing," she said as she held the gate open for her friend, "Come on, we best get started."
As she stepped into the garden, she could see there were plenty of herbs. Professor MacTavish certainly had a lot time on his hands. He also knew how to get a wide variety of planet life to grow in Highland soil--not an easy feat considering the number of dreadful midges that had covered the countryside this past summer. At least that was her experience up in Arisaig with her family. The plants seemed to be arranged in rows neatly. Ruthie kept a keen eye out for aloe, considering how useful it had been earlier in the year with a certain accident that had been birthed from her first errand. Hopefully, there would be no such trouble here. After all, at least she had a buddy in Shauna with her; that should be protection enough. "What do you reckon?" she asked, "Should we each just take a row?"

As Shauna waited for Ruthie she was trying to keep her body moving but mostly so she didn't turn into a popsicle….now of course this is a bit of an exaggeration but that was her thought at the time. Finally when Ruthie approached her eye's widened in surprise seeing the girl carrying her cloak before she started laughing "So you can carry you cloak around like it's no big thing? Makes me think you are part dragon or something." she teased poking Ruthie in the arm as they walked inside as her friend was nice enough to hold the gate open for her. She didn't even bother to answer about being cold already as her red nose was answer enough; Shauna was the type to always get too cold or too hot easily.
The moment they did walk inside Shauna had to cover her mouth to keep from spewing out the first thing that came to mind as it was rather a very muggle sort of word. Her eyes wandered around the garden as almost instantly various plants began whispering to her. She had to physically take a breathe to clear her mind in order to actually hear what Ruthie was saying *"What do you reckon?" she asked, "Should we each just take a row?"*
Just as Shauna was about to answer a voice drowned out all the others; it was well above a whisper which was something Shauna wasn't used to nor was she used to a plant having such a deep voice. This in itself made Shauna turn as if she was in a trance and walk over towards the plant; the plant she was walking towards was in a corner of its own because of its size…or that's what Shauna thought. She had no idea she was walking towards Devil Snare.

Ruthie laughed as she heard Shauna compare her to a dragon. "Not a dragon, but growing up in the Highlands, this is basically the same weather I have at home. If anything home is colder, being on the water," she explained. Funny, she'd been away from home for two months now and yet so much had happened in that time. At times, she wished she could go back to the cool, placid waters of Arisiag. But there was no time for day dreaming. You didn't get up this early just to dilly-dally.
Shauna seemed to stop to take the garden in upon their arrival, but Ruthie was quick to get settled. As she waited for Shauna to determine which row she'd like to work on, Ru slug her cloak up over the fencing, where it could rest until she needed it. She took out her empty basket and held it in her right palm as she looked around for some other tools. Someone had to leave a trowel or a shovel around somewhere, and if not she hoped they would be able to simply pull the herbs out from the ground with relative ease. Either way, she wasn't too concerned. Having grown up around plants, this all seemed fairly commonplace.
As she was still looking, she noticed Shauna was walking toward a large plant. The Scottish girl squinted to get a better look. It was abnormally large with large twisty vines reminiscent of what you might find in a pumpkin patch, but they looked anything except harmless. Whatever it was, it was not a herb. "Shauna, I don't think that's a herb!" she called out, "Stay on this side." It was just then that she reached down to pick up a forgotten trowel. Lucky that was to find. Hopefully, Shauna would be lucky too--or she'd see sense because if she had some sense, she wouldn't need luck.

Shauna was suddenly lurched out of her one track mind by Ruthie's voice at this point she was mere inches away from the plant; it was still talking to her "I have to gather herbs to dry them….I don't think you are what the professor had in mind." she chuckled at the plant as it asked to be dried But then the poor thing seemed to droop; oh no she made it sad…'No one ever wants anything to do with me; I'm big scary Devil Snare. Now she felt bad as she stepped closer the plant gently drapped a vine over her shoulder "I will come back to talk to you some time but the professor did specify herbs does that sound like a good deal?" She gently stroked the vine on her shoulder like she would a dog then watched as it dropped to the ground 'Sounds very good.'
Shauna then made her way over to the area in which where Ruthie had hung her cloak; even though she was cold she removed her own cloak and hung it next to Ruthie's revealing the fact she was already wearing a gardener's tool belt complete with everything needed for any sort of gardening. After putting on her gloves she went to find a row in she could harvest from all the while praying Ruthie wouldn't ask about what just happened with the Devil Snare but honestly she knew better. Anyone would want to know why someone was talking to a plant. She glanced over at Ruthie for a moment noticing the girl was looking around for something….presumably for a shovel. Just as she was about to hand her over her own to use a cute little plant gained her attention 'Oh please ask her to take me; she won't even need to use a shovel.'
This plant was absolutely adorable; it seemed to have a face but she knew that it didn't "Ruthie…this one will be easy to obtain; you will not need a shovel." she said pointing out the plant trying to sound as if the plant hadn't just told her that even though she knew Ruthie had JUST witnessed her holding a conversation with another plant. After pointing out the plant to Ruthie she walked over to another row to find a plant for herself to harvest.

From the way that Shauna seemed to lurch back from the vine-ridden plant, Ruthie felt like she ought to be concerned. She couldn't tell exactly what was going one, but it was clear to her that something wasn't quite right. She'd had enough trouble with errands after she scalded her hand with wax so she was ever vigilant to ensure nothing was going to go wrong this time. Slowly, she stepped forward with the trowel in hand and moved closer to Shauna. "You okay there?" she asked, but as she did so Shauna turned around and walked over to where she had left her cloak along the fence and set her own there, revealing a full gardener's belt. "You could have told me you had all these gardening tools," Ruthie said, a little annoyed. It hadn't taken too long to locate the trowel, but still. It was a matter of common courtesy.
She was about to walk over and start the work when Shauna informed her she didn't need a shovel to harvest the particular planet she was looking at. Ru didn't know what it was, but there was something about the way her friend said it--the tone or the strange confidence in her voice--that just seemed off. Her eyebrows tensed as she looked over at her fellow Ravenclaw. Events with Shauna were, not to put too fine a point on it, often a little strange, but she'd never seen her converse with a plant before, if that was what was even what was going on. Had the girl had another unfortunate incident with a potion? Was she hallucinating? She didn't know, but she did know Professor MacTavish was in the nearby greenhouse and she willing to go and fetch him if she needed to.
"Are you quite sure you're all right?" Ruthie asked a second time as she settled down into her own row. Trowel in hand, she managed to gently loosen the soil. With her other hand, she grabbed the plant stem and pulled out a healthy batch of parsley. Green with a nice color and no indication of being over bitten by insects, it was a nice specimen. She placed the parsley down flat in her basket and moved on to the next plant in the row, but not before looking back at her partner. She was all right, wasn't she?

Shauna gently arched her brow at Ruthie's tone of voice when she had revealed all of her gardening tools making her bit her lip softly "I'm sorry Ruthie I didn't know you were locating tools for me as well." She spoke in a calm and friendly manner; honestly she wasn't used to people being this nice to her. What the world was she going to do when she went back to the orphanage for the summer; that thought alone made a cold sweat run down her back. She had to physically shake the thoughts from her head as she knelt down in front of row of Basil.
She was just about to get started when Ruthie asked her once again if she was alright making her smile a bit "Ruthie I promise I'm fine…thank you for your concern." she hummed softly as she dug her hands deep into the soil finding the very end of the root. She noticed the Basil's roots where very soft making them easy to simply break off and gently dig out of the dirt. She did this with all the Basil in the row while placing them all in her small basket she's always used for gardening.
After she had went down the row collecting the Basil she stood back up inspecting the row to make sure she had indeed gotten all the Basil from the row. Once she was sure she took out her small rake and gently raked over the row so that way it was all nice and ready for the professor to plant next season. When she was done with that she looked over at Ruthie with a smile "Ready to go?"

She seemed to quickly develop a rhythm for pulling out parsley. Shauna too, seemed to be getting on well. "Don't worry about it," Ruthie replied to her obviously more prepared friend. It had been annoying in the moment, but it probably also meant Shauna would reap a lot of herbs, which would likely get them both in Professor MacTavish's good graces.
But as she pulled on the parsley, something remarkable happened: Shauna thanked her. Ruthie's eyebrows furrowed for a second. In all the time she had known Shauna, she had found the girl to have a talent for harsh words, but this was the opposite. Moreover, it sounded genuine. "You're welcome," Ru beamed, feeling as though their friendship had, in that, moment elevated a level. And she was glad of it as she had been hoping to make some solid friends here at Hogwarts. Seemed like she was making good progress here.
Shauna seemed to be moving faster down her row, but Ruthie was determined to catch up. And she did as the skill from planting at home with her mother finally seemed to catch up with her. She was on her final parsley plant when Shauna asked if she was ready to leave. "Just about," she said, plucking the plant out of the ground and into the air. Using the trowel to return the soil to a calmer state, she said, "Let's get these into the greenhouses, tied off and dried for Professor MacTavish." Gathering her things, she set off, proud of the job they had done without incident.

While her friend worked with her final section of parsley Shauna took her basket over by her cloak before going out the gate for a minute to the water pump which she used to wash off her tools. She then grabbed the towel she carried with her to dry them off so they didn't rust before putting them back in their holster; once that was done she went back just as Ruthie was wrapping up to grab her cloak and Basil. "Sounds good to me; I can already smell the food at the castle cooking and it's making my stomach growl." She chuckled a bit as she hooked her cloak over the crook of her arm and lead the way to the greenhouses.
She held the garden gate and the door to the greenhouse for Ruthie; when she entered the greenhouse she had to take yet another deep breathe to keep all plants from talking to her at once. It was in this moment she had to do everything in her power to keep them from talking to her or rather keep herself from talking back to them; in essence she had to ignore them…this in itself was difficult. As they walked further into the greenhouses Shauna seen a table all set up for the students to tie off the herbs into bundles complete with everything someone would need, he even provided a diagram on how to tie off the herbs in case someone didn't know how. Thankfully she'd had plenty of practice with Monty back at the orphanage as she stepped up to the table placing her basket of Basil to one side of her she thought she was whispering to herself but ended up speaking out loud "Thank you Monty." she smiled a bit as she remembered Monty while she began putting together all her bundles along the table before tying them off then finally taking them all over to the place they were to be hung and hung them in a nice row all the while working along the side of Ruthie. The minute she was done she noticed a book on a stand that needed they needed to sign with their name, house and plant they dried; she signed the book for herself. "Hey Ruthie come get your name in this book." Once her friend had done that they left to get something to eat.
