Searching Pt.2 Completed PV Virgil Lee

“My family is very mixed group of people.” Adlai laughed a bit after she said that. Pushing herself off the stall door she began to wander about the bathroom once again.

“My mum is very strict and demanding while my dad is very laid back and is a “yes man.” My sisters are little balls of energy at the moment that just can’t sit down, my grandparents on both sides of my family are pretty traditional but my dads parents are pretty chill, they like to joke around. And...well my Aunt is...well she’s my aunt there’s nothing much to say about her since we never really talk.”

Looking down at the stone floor Adlai placed her feet in two separate squares and looked ahead. Moving one foot in front she balanced herself onto one square. Quickly she began to play a small game of hop-scotch, as if she were in her own little world.

“I don’t want me talking about my family to end up sounding like a sob story, sorry.” She said as she reached the end of her stone tile path that was conveniently right next to Virgil. Small pieces of curled hair had emerged from her hijab due to her jumping around. Adlai didn’t seem to mind though as she knew she could fix it later.

Resting against one of the stalls, arms crossed, Virgil watches with an easy smile as Adlai talks about her family, the girl clearly entertained by jumping on the toilet's dirty tiles. The way she talks about her sisters make him wish he wasn't an only child — he's good with babies, or so he likes to think. He has two younger cousins, twins, named Joohyun and Mingyu, that had just turned one last month, and, whenever he plays with them, he hopes his parents will get back together and he'll finally have a sibling. Preferably a sister. Virgil wouldn't mind a brother, though.

Then Adlai mentions her aunt, and she seems to hesitate in her words. Virgil frowns a little, wondering how bad their relationship could be, having no examples in his head. There are no bad relations in his family, which he's deeply thankful for. Even if his parents are divorced, they're still great friends and no animosity plays around when they meet. He feels bad for her but doesn't say anything, not wanting to make things worse or anything.

Conveniently, Adlai stops jumping right next to him, apologizing. Her hair is escaping the headscarf she always wears — he knows there's a name for it, but he can't remember. And Virge feels an itch in his hand, as he wants to put them behind her ear, but the boy doesn't move, of course, not wanting to break any barriers.

"It's alright," Instead, Virgil says, smiling at her, uncrossing his arms and hiding his hands behind his back. "You listened to me complain about beast climbing, it seems only fair I listen to you, as well."

“You’re a good friend, Virgie.” Adlai said.

She genuinely meant it. Virgil was a kind boy who would most likely do great things in the wizard world and perhaps beyond. He didn’t seem to mind Adlai’s tangents and sometimes tried to put his own two cents in about the topic.

Adlai admired him. She wanted to spend more time with him, she wanted them to form a closer bond but she felt like she always needed a reason for them to meet, much like today. She had barely been able to hang out with her friend Leah, even though they were in the same house.

Adlai was lonely and Virgil made that miserable feeling go away. When she was with him she felt warm and bubbly, but sometimes confused. She wanted to know more about him. Where he’s been, where he wants to go, what he’s read, and wants to read...
She could on forever.

But simply knowing that she could call him a friend was enough for now, though she wished most of their interactions were not just small waves in the hallway and when their doing class work

She felt a pull towards Virgil, something almost magnetic. She wanted to hug him as a thank you.But she didn’t, instead she continued to stand where she was with a crooked smile.

He's speechless.

Just that simple sentence was enough for him to freeze, eyes a little wide, and, as expected, the blush creeping in his entire face, not limited to his cheeks anymore. He doesn't know what to say — he's trying to figure out how he managed to become friends with such a nice girl, being the mess he is.

His palms begin to sweat, and, Merlin— I can't breathe! Virgil lets out a loud, perhaps too loud, laugh, running both of his shaking hands through his hair. There's no reason for him to act like this, but, hey, when does he ever act like an actual normal person?

"T-Thanks," He chokes out, voice shaking, sounding fragile and high-pitches. Virgil avoids her smile because there's a bubbling sensation in his stomach, as his heart speeds up, and he feels like he'll throw up anytime soon. He sucks in some breath, trying to stop the anxiety attack, but he only manages to sound airy and weak, when he says, "Y-You're great, too..."

Friends... He repeats the word several times in his mind, trying to calm himself down. This is the moment he ruins everything by running away. Of course, he feels like hiding. Virgil wants to hide in the Slytherin common room and owl his cousin the longest letter. Because he finally did it! Virgil Lee actually made a friend. And without having to embarrass himself that much, too!

Making friends has always felt like an impossible achievement for him. Because, even though he can socialize, he never knows when he can confidently say that someone is his friend. He's never sure when they've successfully stepped out of the acquaintances' zone, but now he knows. Virgil coughs one more time, hiding his face, avoiding eye-contact as if that would stop Adlai from noticing how red and embarrassed he is.

“Thank you.” Adlai said her cheeks being tainted by the color red. She felt her heart flutter and stomach jump. What is wrong with me? she asked herself before brushing her stray hairs away.

“I’ll see you around then?” Adlai began to slowly back up no wanting to look away from Virgil who was doing his best to hide his burning face. As she slowly backed up she bumped into a sink, a loud shriek erupting from her followed by an awkward laugh.

“Um-heh, bye!” She said with a small wave before rushing out of the bathroom. She had to tell Leah right away, she had to write to her parents. What would they say? Would they be worried? Would they be glad? So many questions buzzed through her head.

Her palms began to sweat, her shoulders were stiff and her knees felt like they’d buckle. So much to do in so little time! she thought. And then more ideas of ways they could meet again began to flooding in. Perhaps she could even drag Isaac or Leah along if they were willing.

Where was Isaac anyway? She hadn’t seen him recently and hadn’t thought to owl him. She would be sure to do that tonight as she wrote her letter to her family.
