Having small legs was never a blessing. Eris was out of shape and had tiny legs. Two things, when put together, led to being extremely slow. She had spent most of her summer inside, studying and attending galas. Being immersed in pureblood culture meant little time for athletics. Besides, being locked in her room for most of the summer was also a hindrance in working out or climbing flights of stairs. Whatever weight she had piled on last year, along with whatever strength she’d also gained, that was all gone. Which made climbing up the flights of stairs to the Owlery quite the struggle.

Going to the owlery hadn’t looked like a daunting task. It hadn’t seemed like a daunting task, either. Not until she had started climbing the stairs and instantly felt her legs burning. Now, Eris walked awkwardly, throwing her body up each step, wincing while climbing. So, it was extremely obvious that climbing the stairs was a struggle for the short third year. Anyone who saw her would think Eris out of her mind, as she rammed herself up the stairs, the way she was moving similar to the way a worm inched up a flower.

Going up was such a struggle that every step was a challenge in itself. as Eris grimaced and dragged herself up flight after flight of stairs, cursing herself yet again for being so small and slightly. Even with her metamorphmagus abilities, she was only able to grow three inches taller. And having three-inch taller legs didn’t quite help her ascent. If only she could use the levitating charm on herself. That would make life a lot easier. Or if a broom could fit up the winding staircase to the Owlery. Both of those options would be far better than dragging her tired feet up the sets of stairs that were starting to feel endless. Literally any option would be better than going up to the Owlery, but Eris didn’t exactly have another option.

She had to send a letter to her grandfather. If she didn’t send a letter to him, Eris suspected that her grandfather would grow angry, which would be far worse than the pain in her legs of walking upstairs. Eris had yet to send her grandfather a letter detailing how her time had school had been and supposed it was a good enough time to send one. The letter was heavily embellished and mentioned nothing of Eris’s fights, just stating that she had gotten on the Quidditch team and that she was still close with Maxwell Avery. It wasn’t exactly full of lies, but wasn’t fully truthful either. Her grandfather had trained her too well in the half-truths of the pureblood business world, evidently.

Eris kept pushing herself up, wondering yet again, why Owlbert had decided to spend his time in the Owlery. Eris still suspected that her small owl had an owl girlfriend, as she’d stated numerous times to multiple people. But, now that she had a letter to deliver and he was nowhere to be found, Eris was no longer pleased by his possible romance life. No longer was her owl’s frequent disappearances a cute thing to puzzle about. Now, they were a source of rage, as Eris cursed and violently flung herself up another stair.

“OWLBERT.” Eris yelled loudly, to no avail. Nothing could be heard besides the faint flapping of wings. Grumbling, Eris kept walking. She was positive her owl was in the Owlery. She knew Owlbert, and knew there was nowhere else he would be. But, if he was somewhere else, Eris would just be more angry for having walked up so many flights of stairs for no reason.

She could throttle her owl, herself. She would make owl stew out of him. Utter baffon of a baby bird! Head full of angry thoughts about how she was going to lecture her owl (although, owls couldn’t really understand lectures). That was, until Eris heard the shrieking of an owl that sounded suspiciously like her own. Tired legs aching in protest, Eris started to run up the stairs even faster. Thoughts of murdering her beloved pet vanished away, for even if she was angry, Eris never had actually wanted her pet injured. Cursing the gods (plural, because it sounded cooler and more successful to pray or curse to more than one person), Eris ran up the stairs. She hadn’t actually wanted Owlbert hurt!

Meanwhile, in the owlery, the tiny brown owl known as Owlbert was not shrieking out of pain. The murderous midget creature was on a mission. Said mission was to capture the strange grey creature on the floor of the Owlery. Cat, it was called. Owlbert wanted Cat. He wanted to present Cat as a gift to his friend. Apparently Cat was bad creature. Cat hurt the long tail creature. Owlbert liked long-tail creature.

The small owl hovered in the air above Cat, letting out an ear-piercing shriek that he personally thought was quite menacing. In truth, the noise made him sound pathetic and in danger, which was why below, Eris started to run for him. But, Owlbert didn’t notice. Wings flapping, Owlbert dived down and towards the beast, trying to drag the cat across the floor and towards the nest he had made out of hay and newspaper scraps.

Instead, the creature being much too heavy for Owlbert to carry, Owlbert just tussled around until Eris sprinted up the stairs and stared at the scene, breaking out into a nervous laugh at the sight. "What the fuck?" Was all Eris found herself saying, eyes scanning around the room for the owner of the cat. Taking a step towards her owl, trying to drag him away from the cat, Eris was rewarded with Owlbert making a face and trying to flap away, all his strength focused on the cat.

The ginger sighed once, sensing that extracting Owlbert from the cat was going to be just as taxing as climbing up the stairs.

“Stupid, stupid cat,” Amanda muttered under her breath as she stormed through the hallways. She was on a mission, a mission to find her stupid cat which she loved dearly. If you haven’t figured it out, “stupid” in Amanda’s vocabulary is a term of endearment rather than an insult when referring to her cat Jenko.

“Heyyyy come here, Jenko!” Amanda called, trying to sound friendly even though she was beyond frustrated with that furry grey beast. He was constantly slipping out from the dorm and wandering around the castle at his every whim. And although Amanda pretended to be merely annoyed, these outings of Jenko’s distressed her greatly. What if another bigger cat got to him, or if that crazy vampire boy decided to make a cat stew?

The brown-haired girl paused at the stairs to the owlery, pursing her lips in thought. After deciding that the owlery seemed like an intriguing place for a cat, Amanda began to trudge up the stairs. Gee, I hope I get real tall soon, she thought as she climbed. Being short bothered her, because she couldn’t be both aggressive and short. People just didn’t take her seriously.

As she neared the top, Amanda could hear an odd shrieking noise which confused her beyond belief until she realized that it was probably an owl. She scrunched up her nose in disgust. Owls were stinky, bothersome birds. Amanda didn’t have the patience for stinky birds.

With a tired sigh, Amanda pushed herself off the last step and walked into the owlery. As soon as she saw what was happening, all previous exhaustion was immediately forgotten and suddenly Jenko was no longer stupid. “Oi, that’s my cat, you fucking degenerate!” Amanda exclaimed at the small stinky bird (aka an owl) that was attacking her cat. She rushed towards the situation, trying to detach the murderous bird from her cat. “Is this your psychotic bunch of feathers? She asked the red-haired girl whom she just noticed. “Get him away!”

I will kill you and share your corpse to the females I love. Owlbert thought at the Cat. He knew that Cat could not understand his hooting. Cat seemed too dumb for speech, so Owlbert did not bother to hoot at the lesser creature. Instead, he thought intense thoughts of murder towards Cat. He was pretty sure Cat understood, from the way the demon hissed. Owlbert tried to hiss back, but couldn't. He resolved this issue by trying to dig his talons into Cat's shoulder, to drag the beast even closer to his nest. But, Cat fought him!

Fiesty beast! Cruel Cat creature. This Cat was not a worthy gift for his beloved. Owlbert would have to retreat quickly. But, not without a fight! His human would be proud of him for fighting the furious Cat for his love. Owlbert let out a death cry, trying to instil fear in the slippery fiend fighting his advancements. His grey beak bit down upon the cat's ear, as Owlbert's wings flapped upwards, vainly trying to drag the cat up and into the air. Instead, he slammed into the back of something.

Was it a large cat? Had the Cat brought backup? Owlbert let out a hiss, letting go of Grey Cat to swivel his head around to look at large Cat. Large Cat was not a large cat. It was a human girl with brown hair. Owlbert did the first thing he could think of to avoid her grabbing him. She must have been Cat's human! The small brown owl flew up and landing in Amanda's hair, squawking loudly, beak nearly slashing through some of her hair, as he nipped at her hair. It was tasty hair. He nibbled at her hair again.

Then he saw a flash of his own human's red hear. She had come to help in his quest! Owlbert tried to communicate with her, letting out an extremely large hoot of recognition from on top of Amanda's head. Human! Owlbert jumped up and down in excitement but made no attempt to leave Amanda's head. She had returned to him!

Meanwhile, Eris rubbed at her head. Exasperation and amusement for her owl's insane behaviour mingled into one, as she looked at the abused cat and the girl with Owlbert on her head. Her amusement turned into mild anger at the fact the stranger had called Owlbert psychotic, although Eris did see the truth in the statement. People did say that pets took after their owners.

Looking at the brown-haired girl who currently had an Owl sized hat on her head, Eris groaned. Whoever the girl was, she was far too tall for Eris to pluck Owlbert down and off her head. Everyone was far too tall for Eris. Scowling at her owl, Eris stuck her hands on her hips.

"It's not my fault he's fucking insane. Eris answered, waving her arms around to get Owlbert's attention. "He was raised at the pet shop, you know? He does whatever the shit he wants, whenever he wants. I can't control him." Eris slammed her foot on the ground, causing Owlbert to look at her and then look back at Amanda's hair. Yum.

"OWLBERT, GET OVER HERE. Sorry by the way. He's been super weird lately. Like more weird than usual. I think he's in love with another owl or something." Eris spoke rather fast, trying to get all her words out at once, without panting. She found herself still tired from climbing up the stairs, and from the shock of seeing her owl beating up a cat. Or, at least trying to.

To her surprise, Owlbert got off Amanda's head! And.. flew straight up onto the ceiling, perching where Eris couldn't get to him. Eris let out a noise of rage, flipping off her pet owl. Ignoring Amanda completely, Eris hopped up, trying to make eye contact with her pet. "Owlbert! I love you, bud. You're great and this is all fun and all, but I gotta get a letter to grandad. Come on down, alright?"

As Eris talked to Owlbert, the little owl grew more excited. His human wanted to play a game! She was talking to him and not the tasty-hair human. Owlbert flapped around in circles, expecting Eris to chase him from the ground. He was never coming down now! He hooted in excitement, as Eris groaned in exasperation.

"Being a single owl parent is hard work." Eris offered up in explanation to Amanda, trying to think of ways to get Owlbert down.

The next five seconds happened so fast that Amanda wasn’t able to defend herself from the vicious owl attack. That stupid, stinky bird dove straight for her head and started to eat her hair! Amanda screamed and batted at the owl that was perched on her head. “Get off, get off! My hair isn’t food, you deranged pigeon!” Her gaze flickered down to the red-haired, bird-owning girl who was trying to talk to her. “No, I don’t know shit about pet shop owls, nor do I care!” Amanda immediately regretted shouting at the girl because it wasn’t her fault, but that regret was fleeting as Amanda was a little too preoccupied with getting her tiny attacker off of her head to be worried about manners. Plus, Amanda never worried about manners anyways.

And then… poof! The owl was gone. Amanda covered her head protectively as soon as the bird flew away, rubbing the spot where “Owlbert” had decided to perch. “Owls don't fall in love,” Amanda stated matter-of-factly as she craned her neck to look up at Owlbert. She stuck her tongue out in a childish manner at the small bird before turning to look at the other girl. She was surprised to see that the ginger was actually shorter than her, a feat that she had thought impossible until now. There was an agreeable aura that surrounded this girl, an aura that reminded Amanda of herself actually.

“Your owl sucks, but you don't seem that bad,” Amanda said as she smoothed her hair. She bent down and picked up Jenko, stroking him gently to try to calm him down. “Ugh, it bit his ear!” She exclaimed, examining the small scratch. “How mean.” She looked back up at the girl and narrowed her eyes slightly. This was the defining moment: yay or nay for the owl girl? Amanda thought for a few seconds, glancing up at the vicious Owlbert and back at the girl. “I’m Amanda,” she finally introduced herself. Despite the fact that her dumb bird had assaulted both Amanda and Jenko, the girl had warranted a yay in her book.

Eris was torn between laughing and screaming. Eventually, she decided to laugh. Once she started laughing, it was nearly impossible to stop, as the miniature red-head let out a large guffaw whilst Owlbert tried to eat Amanda’s hair. Eris felt the need to apologize for Owlbert’s behaviour but found his insanity too funny to even bother correcting. It was definitely true that pets somewhat took after their owners, for even if Eris’s insane urges had long since calmed down, they certainly seemed to have manifested in Owlbert.

Struggling to contain her abundance of giggles at the brunette’s screeches, Eris was able to sober up for a split second when Amanda yelled at her. For a moment, her eyes widened and she stopped laughing. But, something about hearing someone scream at her while an owl ate her hair made Eris giggle even more, as she sputtered out a short laugh in recognition of Amanda’s snippy comment towards Eris.

Finally, managing to regain a bit of sobriety to her tone, Eris crossed her arms and looked up at Owlbert. Silently pleading him to come down, she decided the best course of action to garner Owlbert flying away from his new perch was to insult him. Eris wasn’t all that sure that owls could understand humans, but sometimes she thought that Owlbert did actually pay attention to the merit behind her words.

“Well, you should care. He was probably abused or something at the pet shop and now is mentally deranged because of it. You hear that, Owlbert? You’re daft in the head, little git!” Owlbert then did actually fly away from Amanda, which made Eris grin from ear to ear.

“Nevermind. You’re not a little git. Good boy!” Eris cooed, before trailing off and letting out a long-suffering sigh. Celebrating her little success was as already expressed, not exactly a long-lived thing. Now, the true enemy was getting Owlbert down from the ceiling.

Searching for a broom or a way to whack down the small creature, who was still fluttering in merry circles around the domed ceiling of the owlery, occasionally bumping into the other owls up there and letting out hoots of enjoyment, Eris responded to Amanda’s comments and questions as she kicked letters out of the way and peered into corners, now intent upon her search for a broom.

“Owls totally fall in love.” Eris responded, pausing her search to grin in the general direction of Amanda, her voice rising in tone as if she was trying to limit herself from sounding too much like a know-it-all. Eris let out a wistful sigh, shaking her head once before going back to her search for a broom. “Everyone falls in love. If owls didn’t fall in love, how would owl babies- owl- what the shit? I don’t know what owl babies are called. Owlets? There has to be some kinda name. Like how baby dogs are called puppies?” Eris swiped her hand through a group of cobwebs as she spoke, grimacing at the lack of object to knock Owlbert down with.

“Anyways. Owls totally fall in love. Love makes you act stupid and shit, right? Owlbert is totally stupid. Thus, he’s totally in love.” Eris laughed again, knowing that her theory made no sense but still finding it amusing. Finding nothing that would manage to take Owlbert down from his perch, Eris gave up and just glared at her owl, trying to mentally convince him to come back down to earth.

While glaring, Eris still paid attention to Amanda. “Sorry about your cat.” Eris responded, turning to look at the injured feline. “But, my owl isn’t an it. His name is Owlbert.” She supplied, eyebrow raised in defiance that was quite short-lived.

When Amanda stated that Eris wasn’t that bad and her own name, Eris grinned. Whoever this girl was, she was strange. But, she liked Eris. That was a win. “I’m Eris. I’d say nice to meet you, but my owl just tried to murder your cat. So, I guess that isn’t all that nice.”

Amanda did not think that the deranged owl was in love. That was a silly idea to her, a crazy owl like him being in love. "I think they're called owlets," Amanda agreed with a nod. "But just because two... creatures have a baby together doesn't mean that they're in love." Amanda was convinced that she was right on that subject. After all, her dad and Leslie's mum had had a baby together and they certainly didn't love each other. "You know, maybe your owl's just plain stupid," Amanda said after a moment, watching the other girl as she tried to get her owl down. "It certainly seems like that to me."

Amanda pursed her lips at the redhead's apology as if deciding whether to accept it or not. "I forgive you, but not your stupid owl," she stated with a dramatic sigh as she scratched Jenko's head lovingly. "And fine, I suppose he's not an it." She looked up at the owl that was still perched above them. "Hullo, Owlbert. You're a real prat, you know that?" She told him, not in an unpleasant tone.

Amanda shifted her gaze back to the other girl, who had just introduced herself as Eris. "No, I suppose it really isn't nice." She couldn't help but match Eris' friendly grin with a small smile of her own. "But you have to admit that it's not the worst situation possible. Does that thin- Owlbert," she corrected herself, "always hang around you? Or does he do his own thing most of the time?" This was a very important question to Amanda. She never wanted to see Owlbert ever again, but if she started associating with Eris, that could be a problem.
