The Hogwarts Library was filled with soft whispers and the warm smell of old parchment and polished wood. Sunlight would stream through the tall, arched windows, lighting up the whole room so you could even see the tiny dust particles in the air. It would cast shadows over the towering bookshelves. Aurette had already settled into a quiet corner near the Charms section, where the book titles promised complex spells and interesting ideas. She was focused on a thick first-year textbook about magical theory, carefully taking notes on a fresh sheet of parchment. Her brow was furrowed in concentration, but her eyes would occasionally look up to take in her surroundings.

Across the wide oak table sat a girl with smooth, dark hair that fell softly around her shoulders. She was carefully sketching in a small, leather-bound notebook. Carina Kaede, a Slytherin first-year Aurette had seen in several classes—quiet, composed, and thoughtful. Carina’s eyes stayed fixed on her work, and a faint scent of soap drifted from her.

The peaceful silence was soon broken by a sudden, slightly off-key hum. Aurette looked up as a girl with chocolate-brown hair, a bit taller than most first-years, approached their table. She moved with confidence but carried a restless energy. This was Lillian McMason, a Gryffindor first-year Aurette had noticed before, usually seeming like her mind was buzzing with a thousand thoughts.

Lillian carried a thick, intimidating book—probably Hogwarts, A History—and set it down on the table a little louder than was really needed in a library, making Carina’s pencil twitch. Lillian sat onto the bench opposite them with a soft sigh, opening the large book as her sharp brown eyes scanned the page.

After a moment, she looked up, meeting Aurette’s gaze and then Carina’s.

Aurette gave a small, polite smile, silently inviting Lillian to speak. She noticed Lillian’s slight grimace at the book, and the subtle way Carina shifted, as if adjusting to the small break in the library’s quiet. The soft hum Lillian had made earlier seemed to want to stay, a quiet burst of sound in the otherwise peaceful room.

Lillian decided to take her copy of Hogwarts, A History to the library, to read in peace, because her fellow Gryffindor's were to loud. Someone, she didn't remember who, had told her that all the answers to Hogwarts's mysteries lay in that book. Lillian's Half-Who-Liked-School had finally convinced her Half-Who-Didn't-Like-School to read, or at least skim that book.
She was lucky she did, because that book was pretty interesting, but the problem was finding the interesting parts amidst the boring stuff that no Hogwarts student actually cared about. She barely saw where she was going, as she entered the library, found a quiet table and sat down.
She bumped the book as she sat it down on the table, a bit loud, but probably no one noticed. Lillian curled up ready to have a pretty good time reading. But she must have noticed something, for she only skimmed three pages before she looked up.
A girl. Unfamiliar. She had smooth, dark hair.
That hair really suits her, Lillian thought, distractedly.
Lillian quickly averted her gaze, as not to be caught stairing, only to find another girl.
I thought this table was empty! she thought a bit surprised to find that she was so absorbed in her book, as to not to notice two girls.
They must have been too quiet, Lillian realized.
The second girl might be a Slytherin, because Lillian thought she saw this girl in a crowd of Slytherins once or twice. This girl, Cara? Carnina?, whatever she was called, had a young delicate look to her, like a flower that needed lots of love and care.
Lillian, not wanting to be caught staring at her too, looked back at the first girl, Aurette . Aurette gave Lillian a small welcoming smile. Lillian felt inclined to say something.
Lillian noticed Carina's notes for the first time, and said "I'm Lillian. Nice day to study, I guess?"
Lillian winced as she shattered the silence, unlike most girls she was a little shy. People thought she was confident, but she wasn't at all around people she hardly knew.
"Umm... why are you here on this fine day?", she tried again.
Another wince. That was no better.

Carina's pencil paused mid-stroke. The faint scratch of graphite stopped just as Lillian's voice drifted over the table, cutting across the comfortable hush like a miscast spell. Carina didn't flinch, but her fingers tightened slightly on the pencil, as if anchoring herself to the page.

She didn't look up immediately.

Instead, she went on with her shading, sketch of a sleeping librarian just a few feet away from her. The sketch had been her only focus since she had been here, bored from the poetry sitting next to her elbow. It was until she had run out of ink did she glance up.

'I'm here because the common room is loud,' Carina said softly, trying to hint at a smile. 'And because books don't interrupt me mid-sentence.' A thought came. Then, as if realizing that might've sounded too sharp, she blinked and added, more gently, 'I mean, I like the quiet. That’s all.' She glanced at Aurette, do we have to talk now? Seeming like she understood, Aurette just nodded once and returned to her parchment. Carina closed her notebook with a quiet snap, figdeting on her chair, she stared blankly at her quill. Lillian's presence had knocked something over, not in a bad way, but Carina wasn't used to the feeling of a company. Still, neither of them seem mean, just nervous?

She sighed softly, placing her arms across her front, and asked, 'What about you?' Tone even, polite but not cold. 'You seem like someone who'd rather be outdoors, not flipping through dusty pages.' That was her attempt at reaching out. It wasn't what she would usually do, but since they sound like talking, she'd better go along. Then there was a pause. Carina didn't fill it. Raising her eyebrows, she continued, 'Let me guess, you’re trying to find the chapter that explains why the staircases try to kill us sometimes.' Even though her tone could be heard dry, but she managed a smile in the end.

Then she reopened her book and waited, in case anyone decides to answer.

Aurette offered Lillian another small, reassuring smile as she spoke, she seemed a bit ...nervous. It was clear Lillian was shy, something Aurette could accept. When Carina finally looked up, her soft voice breaking the quiet demeanor of the room, Aurette nodded in agreement with the comment about the common room being loud. That was exactly why she was here too.

As Carina gently asked Lillian why she was in the library, Aurette just listened, her eyes shifting between the two girls. She picked up her quill and lightly tapped it on her parchment. When Carina’s eyes met hers, almost like a silent request, Aurette gave a small, understanding nod before going back to her work, though she kept listening.

When Carina joked that Lillian might be looking for the chapter on the staircases, Aurette let out a quiet, but not too disturbing, laugh. She finally spoke, her voice soft and calm, addressing both of them.

I’m Aurette, nice to meet you both,” she said, amusement in her tone.

And Carina, I do have to agree, I too love being outdoors. But even I need a break from the fresh air sometimes, especially when the library offers such... peaceful company.” She paused, then added more directly to Carina, “And to answer your guess, while the staircases are definitely a ...mystery, I’m actually trying to get a head start on my charms essay. Though, I wouldn’t mind figuring out why some of them refuse to cooperate.”

She gave a small, friendly smile to both Lillian and Carina, waiting to see if either of them would say anything.

Lillian felt encouraged by Aurette's second smile. "Someone once told me that all the Hogwarts secrets are in this book. I figured that since not many people read it, that I should. Who knows, mabie one day it'll come in handy?" she told Carina, softly and not too fast, as proper in a library. Lillian was starting to feel more relaxed now that both girls seemed nice.
"I do enjoy being outside, but sometimes a good book is just what you need." she said a moment later as an afterthought.
Then Lillian let the silence surround them for a couple minutes. She tried to get back involved in her book, but it wasn't the same now that she knew that there were other girls here. Other girls, that Lillian was starting to make friends with. Other girls, that could talk to Lillian at any moment. She skimmed a few more pages, and looked up. She was waiting for someone to say something. Finally, Lillian did.
She had just noticed Carina's picture. That girl is such a good artist! she thought, slightly surprised.
"I like your picture," Lillian started again, hoping the others still wanted to talk to her. "Where did you learn to draw that well?" she asked, trying to get the conversation over to something that wasn't expected, like introductions, and why-are-you-here questions. She would like to be friends with these girls, because they seemed nice and friendly.

Carina's pencil paused again, held just above the sketchbook. A flush of heat rushed faintly to her cheeks, not bright or obvious, just so she shifted in her seat, tucking her hair behind her ear to keep her hands busy.

Compliments always caught her off guard.

She hadn't expected Lillian to speak again. Let alone notice her drawing. Most people just saw the notebook and assumed it was homework, or ignored it altogether. Her eyes flicked briefly to Lillian, cautious, trying to tell if the praise was just something polite to say or something real. But Lillian's face was open, curious, and quietly kind. Carina blinked once, then let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding.

'Thanks,' she said, soft but not forced. 'I just draw sometimes.' Her fingers traced the edge of the sketchbook. 'I never really learned from anyone. It just helps me think, I guess.' Her gaze fell to the fine detailed curls of the sketch of the librarian's hair, it wasn't professional but it wasn't simply. She gently rotated the book toward Lillian so the Gryffindor could get a proper look, a subtle sign of trust.

'Do you draw?' she asked, glancing at Lillian. Then to Aurette, she added, 'Or write maybe? You seem like someone who keeps their thoughts neat.' She meant it sincerely. Carina wasn't always good at making friends. Words, especially spoken ones, didn't come as easily as pencil strokes or parchment margins. But she hopes to practise her social skills on these two young ladies.

Aurette decided to leave Carina and Lillian to talking, instead she started taking notes again. It wasn't until then that Carina asked her a question that she looked up, "Or write maybe? You seem like someone who keeps her thoughts neat", Aurette laughed a little.

Sure, sometimes she did jot a few notes on her leather notebook, but most of those were merely silent observations of the world around her. "Sometimes, yes," she told Carina honestly, there was no point lying, it seemed that everybody knew Aurette was very observant.

That old notebook was gifted to her by one of her friends at the country. It had been her birthday, simple and small, just how Aurette had liked it, only a few months from their move. Aurette never really touched it for quite a while during their times at Godric's Hollow, not until her brother, Aster, was snooping around and asked about it. From then on, Aurette kept that notebook with her at all times, an old keepsake from her friends, something like an ancient scroll, where legacy was imprinted in it, legacy that would unfold Aurette's future.

"Only for my thoughts though, I mostly keep drawings in them", she continued. Aurette paused, then looked at Lillian, waiting for her answer, "What about you?"

Lillian turned her head a couple times to compare Carina's sketch of the librarian, to the actual librarian. "It's really good," she said softly, but genuine. Her picture was even better up close.
Then, to answer Carina's question of whether she drew or wrote, she said "Currently I don't do either, but I was thinking about starting a journal. But I've been to busy, and haven't done it yet," Lillian wasn't lying. She intended to do it, but school kept her constantly learning and studying what she just learned.
That got Lillian thinking about if you know you are good at something from the first try or not. And do you in a way know if you will be good at something when you are very young, or do you try it when you are older? Or, are you rebellious one day, and then find out 'Hey, I am actually good at this!'
Then, she looked up from her book, where she wasn't really studying, ( She didn't even take it one word. ) "Have you always drew or did you find out you were good recently? she asked turning her head towards Carina. "And, what about you? Have you always had a journal?" she said, turning her head to Aurette, this time.
She thought to herself awaiting their answers, I haven't asked that many questions in ages! But, she was only half-surprised. They were nice, and Lillian didn't really think that they'd mind. And, the more she thought about it, they seemed like quiet, studious girls, just like her!
