Avery was surprised when the older girl began to swat gently at her hand. It knocked her aim off just enough to narrowly miss the snitch. She was a little annoyed in the back of her head, but she knew this was just a game. A game that was supposed to be fun, so she didn't let that get to her. She was ready to finish out with a bang. No matter what happened.

As they veered sharply left towards the snitch, an idea popped into Avery's head. It was risky, but it was worth a try if it actually worked. She didn't really know how she would pull it off, but she was going to try anyway. Her father had told her about the move and she had seen it done by a Seeker in a professional Quidditch game, so how hard could it be?

Avery dipped down towards the ground at a rapid pace and could only hope that the other girl followed. At the last second, she shakily jerked her broom up and back towards the snitch. Even though the move wasn't perfect, she hoped that it had been enough of a distraction for her to catch up and finally grab the snitch!

The Stick-to-Avery plan seemed to be working.
But irritating her? That had to wait.

As the kid maneuvered—boldly, I must admit—after the Snitch, she suddenly darted downward. Huh. That was… unexpected. Usually, going upward offers a better vantage for a clean dive-catch. Diving down? Either she’s bluffing or she’s got a trick up her sleeve.

Still, I kept trailing her descent. It was clear she wasn’t letting that Snitch out of her sight this time. Fixated, bull-headed, and hell-bent on that speck of gold. Yep—textbook Avery.

Watching her, I had a hunch. The angle of the snitch, her positioning—it all suggested she might shoot upward at the last second. I wasn’t sure when, but the setup felt familiar. I think I’ve seen something like this before—though if memory serves, it usually works best with a little help. A teammate giving a push or some kind of coordinated boost? I can’t quite remember the specifics, but I know soloing it isn't ideal.

Still, if she’s attempting something new, there’s bound to be risks. The cons might just outweigh the pros.

So, do I press in and distract her now? Nah. That would be a waste. If anything, it might just throw her off completely—and I’m not trying to crush her spirit. Not yet.

Maybe… I should fly away?

Now that’s different. Unexpected. I like it.

Without a second thought, I pulled up from the chase and veered off to gain height, watching from an eagle’s vantage. My plan? Simple. I’ll repeat the dive—the same risky maneuver she’s already seen once. But since I haven’t repeated a single move yet today, she won’t expect it. At least, I hope she won’t.

Of course, setting it up will take time. I need the right positioning, the right angle. And I’ll only go for it if she misses the Snitch.

Her tactic, for all its downsides, is still solid. She could very well pull it off.
But me? I’m chasing something else now.
An instinct. A thrill. A gamble.

And I’ve already placed my bet.

Of course she had calculated everything wrong. She hadn't even noticed that the older girl had flown a little ways away until the snitch slipped between her fingers. She shouldn't have attempted the dive alone, but she knew that it would have been the only way to get that little fluttering golden ball. She huffed out and sigh and repositioned herself in an attempt to get reoriented after the hard jerk up.

She sensed the older girl had another trick up her sleeve to get that little ball, but she paid little attention. If she lost focus now, things wouldn't work so great in the long run. She needed to get that snitch. Even if it meant she had to pull some more risky moves. As long as she could prove that she could do it, she wouldn't stop.

Avery was a little sad that this was their last game of the day, but she was also slightly relieved. She was exhausted from the constant chasing and her muscles ached from her crash earlier. Though, this was the first time ever that she had really enjoyed practicing with the snitch. Something inside her had lit up. A feeling that she had never felt before. All she could hope was that she could keep up the pace. Only for a little while longer.

Avery had it tough. I chose not to disrupt her with the dive—despite positioning myself from above and keeping track of the snitch the entire time, she was simply too close for me to risk it.

As she repeatedly lunged for the snitch, I gradually closed the distance between us again. Her persistence was admirable—genuine grit—and for a moment, I felt no urge to pull any more fouls.

It was time for a proper match.

Now, the real game began. Both of us were in strong positions, Avery still slightly ahead in proximity to the snitch. I drew closer, aligning myself beside her—shoulder to shoulder once more.

At this point, the outcome wouldn’t depend on speed or agility alone. It would come down to sheer luck. Avery was quick—no doubt about that—but I had the edge in experience, technique, and the broom beneath me.

To dismiss her effort would be insulting. But to go easy on her? That would be worse.

I took a deep breath and made my choice.

I’m not holding back.
Let the best flyer win.

Avery knew that the older girl was nearby. Close enough that she could almost hear bother the older girl's and her own breathing if she listened carefully enough. Avery knew that meant something was coming. The final push of a game they had been dancing around. It was finally her time to show what she was made of and to prove that she would be a good enough Seeker to help lead her fellow lions to victory. And it all started now.

Avery focused hard. She wouldn't let anything else stop her from getting that snitch. No distractions, tricks, nothing. If she was going to be a Seeker, she needed to start acting like one.

She knew the girl had an advantage. She was older, had more experience, and of course had a better broom. But something was different. Avery sensed that she wasn't actually a Seeker. That's where Avery had the advantage.

Avery had always watched other famous Seekers and read books about Quidditch ever since she gained an interest in the sport. Watching Seekers was much easier than actually being a Seeker, though. She didn't know how they made everything look so easy. She guessed being a professional and doing the same thing for years eventually grilled enough into your brain to make it like second nature.

My broom definitely had the edge over Avery’s—no question about that. Speed-wise, I had the upper hand.

And yet... *deep inhale, long exhale*... this infuriating little golden thing seems to have an affection for the empty space between my fingers rather than the hand itself.

Not once. Not twice. Honestly, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve tried to grab the damn snitch—only for it to slip right past me every single time. It’s as if it’s personally offended by the idea of me catching it. While I was caught up in my frustration and futile attempts, my speed faltered just enough—and Avery has the advantage.

At this point, I’m officially swearing off mocking our team’s Seeker like the rest of my mates do. Because what the actual hell is with this thing? And to think, I once believed I had what it takes to be a Seeker. Brilliant.

My first two moves were tactically perfect—a clean grab should’ve been inevitable. But chasing this blasted speck across the sky? Practically impossible.

So now, it’s a showdown between two forces: my growing, unfiltered frustration with the snitch… and Avery’s relentless speed.

Let’s see which wins out.

Avery focused hard on the little golden ball fluttering in front of her. She could sense the growing frustration in her opponent as the golden ball constantly fluttered just out of reach of her attempts to snatch it. It was like everything was a game to the little ball. And Avery was ready to end it once and for all. She had to do this. She had to prove herself.

Avery watched as the golden ball fluttered back and forth between them. She was calculating the perfect time to catch it. The time when the ball that seemed to have a mind of its own would be oblivious to what she was about to do. It was the perfect plan, but nothing ever went correctly when it came to plans. She knew that all too well.

That's what Avery decided to do. It was a now or never free-for-all match. One having experience with Quidditch, and the other? Well, an aspiring Quidditch Seeker. It wasn't exactly a fair ending match, but life wasn't fair at all. She was almost ready to get that snitch, but she could wait a few moments longer. A few moments of carefully calculating where the snitch would go next could save her a lot of trouble when it came to grabbing it.

Oh god.
Hell...

Is she really... is she actually trying that right now?

Well, this isn’t exactly the kind of moment you get to pause and calculate a move, now is it?

Avery had more than one perfect opportunity to grab the Snitch. And yet, she keeps holding back—maintaining that precise distance between her and the golden speck, like she’s trying to time some kind of boost-grab maneuver.

That's my guess, at least.

But she’s not seeing the downside. She’s giving me far too much space—both in time and positioning—for me to catch up and potentially intercept.

I’ve already regained my speed and positioned myself alongside her. But her sudden shifts and half-fakes are keeping me just cautious enough. I really don’t want to hurt her. But if this were a real match—and if I were a true rival—she would’ve been shoved out of my way by now. Worse, a Bludger would’ve made contact mid-shove, and she'd have never seen it coming.

Her tunnel vision is too strong. Her eyes are locked on the Snitch, but it’s costing her situational awareness.

Then again... I hope I’m wrong.
I hope she still has her senses about her—enough to feel my presence closing in like a shadow overhead.

Because if she doesn’t...
This might not end well.

It was time. She could feel the older girl closing in on her, and it wouldn’t be long before Avery lost her chance. Avery was nervous. For the first time ever she would be attempting to actually grab the snitch with someone else closing in on her. That was nowhere near what she was used to. Yet she knew it was her job and she had to do it.

Avery reached out her hand. Her fingers stretching towards the fluttering golden ball. The wind rushed in her ears. Blocking out everything else but the sound of her own breathing. It was as if time had stopped and she was the only thing moving. That’s what it felt like, at least.

Avery stretched just a little farther out and felt cold metal against her fingers. She nearly froze mid chase in disbelief. She had done it. After all this time she had actually caught the little snitch. Was it a pretty chase or good way of doing it? No, but at least she had learned more about how to do it now.

Avery slowed to a halt mid air. The snitch still clutched tightly in her fingers. She looked down to see it still in her hands. Shock very obvious on her face. She had done it.

“I caught it. . .” Avery barely whispered more to herself than anyone. It was true. She really had done it this time. But that was only one time.
