@Boniface Murtagh MacTavish
June 18th
Early Morning, After Curfew
Warm, Breezy
The question most likely currently coursing through your mind is: why in the world was Marla Juliet Quinlan sneaking out for the millionth time to go to, out of all the locations in a magical castle filled to the brim with majestic secrets of every kind, the greenhouse? Well, let me tell you. One word. Three syllables. Mactavish. She had done most everything there was to experience in Hogwarts that she knew of, and to be quite frank, she was bored. The year was weening and in the midst of all the black and white came something new, shiny, and exciting. A professor. She had met him in the Gryffindor common room, the man shrouded in mystery, and they did seem to have a bit in common. Red hair, check. Gryffindor, check. And just.. The way he held himself. Cool, calm, collected. This was most likely another excuse to let herself explore through the depths of the night, but everyone had their secrets. What were Boniface Murtagh MacTavish's? Yes, she knew his name. She had done her research. In a very non-creepy way. Totally.

And while, once again, she had done this numerous times, there was something different about tonight. Whether it was just the heaviness of the almost summer air, or simply anxiety, there was a home-sickness, an unfamiliar kind of adrenaline coursing through her veins. Then again, this was her first time really investigating a professor. Last time, she wasn't even actually trying. Plus, it was with someone. Mari Haynes. They had been sneaking around, trying to imprison the poor new charms professor, Mr. Vernatis. The worst part was that Marla knew that he was innocent, but she just couldn't leave Mari to fend for herself. Oh, that poor, poor Hufflepuff. But now she was alone. And this was for real. It was riveting. Scary, even.

She bit her lip, finally stepping foot onto the lightly damp grass with her cheap and worn grey slippers. While you may think that due to her being related to two extremely well-off pure-blood families, she'd have some quality clothing. You are incorrect. She had been offered garments from her family on occasion, though due to her spite for the majority of her family, and simply how petty she was, Marla refused anything from them. The only thing she accepted was a small golden pendant necklace from her uncle. It was the only gift that she had been offered on her eighth birthday, and she hasn't taken it off since. It truly meant everything to Marla, and she thought of it as a lucky charm of sorts. In fact, she was holding it so tight that it was threatening to break off of her neck. The Gryffindor would need extra luck on this spring night, whether the piece of jewelry liked it or not. Well, a necklace most likely didn't have an opinion, but this is magic we're talking about. Truly, anything can happen.

Soon enough, she had made her way to the terrifying doorway that led to the greenhouse. Marla gazed at it for a while, squinting her eyes and moving closer in an attempt to see what was inside. It was too dark and much too risky to cast Lumos. What if Mactavish were in there? Her investigation would end before it could start. She had done this before, and casting Lumos was practically screaming "COME AND GET ME!", so... No. It was not exactly the way to go. She would just have to take her chances in the coat of night. She wiped her sweaty palms onto her robes before slowly opening the doors to the greenhouse, a light scent of nature and dirt filling her nose. She crept inside, hearing the slight squish of the muddy ground below her feet. She silently thanked herself for wearing light shoes, if they could even be classified as so. If she were wearing chunky sneakers right now, they would be making tons more noise.

Continuing her journey through the greenhouse, it was only now sinking in how eerie the building was at night. The moonlight shining through the tinted windows, illuminating the room just enough for a rough outline of the surroundings to be visible so that Marla would be able to efficiently maneuver her way around. The ambiance sent a chill down her spine, it gave her the feeling that there was someone watching. Eyes piercing through her back even in such a dark, isolated area on the grounds. She crossed her arms in a self-hug manner that helped put her at ease, feeling like she wasn't alone. At least she had some noodly arms to work with, have company somewhat. Okay, yes, that was a long shot. But Marla was reaching for truly anything here, anything to prevent her from chickening out and scurrying back to the warm, inviting common room.

But before she could even have a second thought about doing so, Marla was rudely interrupted by a sudden sting on her elbow. What the hell was that? She froze in her path, letting her other arm go limp and rubbing the sting, which was now just a light pulsating feeling slowly fading away. As if something lightly pricked her. Was it her imagination? Not only did she have no idea what plants were in here, but she couldn't see a single thing. Hopefully, it wasn't anything deadly, that would suck. Big time. And so, she decided to live and forget, moving her foot to take another step. However, the world apparently thought "lets fuck over Miss Quinlan big time", for she tripped on a vine, letting an audible gasp escape her lips before she fell straight into a potted plant, the container shattering upon impact.

As if it couldn't get any worse, to answer her question from before: the stinging was not imaginary. What was previously a distant memory of a pricking pain was now being felt all over her body, and this time it wasn't fading. She let out a groan as she tried to roll around in an attempt to escape this dark and frankly uncomfortable and equally terrifying mess, but instead she heard another pot get knocked over and felt more stinging on her face. Marla screamed, grabbing her wand and pointing it straight at the plant before screaming the infamous "Incendio," as she moved her wand in the shape of a raging flame. It obliged, fire emitting from the tip before beginning to burn the area of the plant that she had pointed it at. Marla immediately stood up, gasping in relief as the stinging calmed down. It still hurt like hell, but not as terribly as before. What she knew for sure, however, was that she was definitely busted. At this point, she didn't care. She was just glad that the plant she had knocked over and fallen into hasn't killed her. Yet, at least. She was still alive, breathing, functioning. No severed limbs or icky wounds. "Hello?" She murmured, wondering if anyone had noticed the ruckus. She almost wished that nobody could hear her, but Marla was pretty much sure that another person had made their way into the greenhouse.

But then it hit her. She had a plan. There was a possibility that she wouldn't be caught! Marla eyed a big plant, immediately scurrying towards it and taking cover behind it, before sitting down and pulling her knees to her chest in fear that someone would spot her.

The number of students sneaking out and into the greenhouses was astounding!

Boniface couldn't believe how often he was having to deal with this! It was absolutely insane! What was it that attracted them to the greenhouses? Had someone slipped them a love potion gone wrong? Was this some sort of mass hysteria? What was it?!?

Whatever it was, Boniface Murtagh MacTavish was sick and tired of these students finding their way into his greenhouses and hurting his plants. It was an old, senseless routine that these poor children needed to grow out of. Luckily for him, and unluckily for the poor student, he was still awake, dressed in his daily attire.

Boniface didn't do much. He had managed to stay put for over a decade in the same place, not doing much of anything, unbothered by the world. Boniface was a boring man. There would be nothing for anyone to find out about him, other than he took very good care of his plants. Still, they insisted to wander in during the odd hours of the night or early morning, their curious eyes prying at all there was to see, and all there wasn't.

And to make matters worse, they always, always provoked the plants! Had none of them bothered to pay attention during their first lesson? He had cautioned them to never, ever provoke the plants, as well as to not enter greenhouses that they shouldn't. What was their fascination with breaking the rules? Had he been too nice?

He had wanted to be nice. That was all he wanted. Kindness and respect for his students. He valued that. However, they seemed to not hold the same respect for him. It made him so tempted to give up the acts of kindness and instead become rude and offputting. However, he knew that this wasn't fair to the students who genuinely wanted to learn. The ones who did their best to never find themselves in trouble.

Sometimes it was a misunderstanding. On occasion, it would merely be the wrong place at the wrong time. On other instances, however, it was about pissing Boniface off. That was what bothered him. There were other ways, not just poking around at the plants.

So, when the crash sounded, Boniface groaned. This was not his first rodeo.

"Lumos!" He commanded, a flick of his wrist making the light appear before him. He squinted ever so slightly, eyes adjusting to the new source of light. Letting the magic source guide him, he walked through, head peering around each corner.

Entering one greenhouse, the one that the crash sounded from, he cinched his eyebrows together. "Cò thèid ann?" He asked, wandering further in.

On the floor was a Gryffindor girl, one who he had met before, wrapped up in his precious Nettle.

Could this man not catch a break?!?

[quote]That is it. This is it. This is where Marla would die. An underachieving, twelve-year-old Gryffindor with an anger problem. Hey, this wasn't such a bad way to go, right? Getting zapped by a professor. Maybe these nettles were somewhat poisonous and would end her in five minutes. A sigh escaped her lips. This would be a very, very humiliating way to perish. What if someone found her looking like a deranged noodle in this damn greenhouse?

But before she knew it, a familiar hoarse and annoyed voice murmured the Lumos spell, and that's when it hit her. She would have a fate worse than death. Marla would not only have to go to the infirmary to fix this.. This stupid prickly plant injury, whatever it was. But she would have detention with an ever so angry professor! Today may or may not be the worst day of her life. "Lord spare me," She murmured, looking up at the ceiling with a scowl. Why her? It was a nice run, it really was. And while Marla has broken the rules before, nothing like this. She just burnt school property to smithereens! Oh, if she got expelled... That would be awful. Just thinking about it made her nauseous, as if there were some gigantic, mutated butterflies hopping around in her stomach. And, yes, the image of that in her brain did make it worse.

Marla fumbled her way into more of a fetal position as soon as she heard a vaguely recognizable language. While she didn't know her father very well, when he was at home, she heard a rather recognizable set of words spoken by him every now and again. As far as she remembered, it was Scottish Gay-something. She shut her eyes tight, a small whimper threatening to come out of her mouth as footsteps became louder, and louder, until a light shone in her eyes. She was either dead, or.. Or...

Nope. She was alive. Opening her eyes, in front of her was the herbology professor, looking rugged, and frankly, quite bothered. She couldn't blame him. If Marla were a professor, she'd be pissed off too. The Gryffindor gave the man a look of defeat and pursed her lips together. As if saying 'I give up, end my suffering', because, well... That was what she was trying to say. However, her features softened when something caught her eye. He was strikingly familiar, but she couldn't place why. Of course, she had met him in the common room and endured his classes, yet it was something strange. Something out of the ordinary. She narrowed her eyes, but shook it out of her head. Now was not the time to do this. She would have to brace for impact, the punishment that was in store for.. Well.. Pretty much destroying this poor professor's plants.

"I'm..Sorry..?" She exclaimed awkwardly, sharply inhaling through her teeth as another shooting pain went through her arm from the nettle. This, now this... Was going to be an awful night.

As the girl apologized, Boniface released a breath that he didn't know that he was holding. A kid. He was face-to-face with some kid. Well, in all fairness, Boniface didn't believe that any professor would come after his plants like this. They were mature enough and wise enough to know better. Kids, however, were much different. They had a natural disregard for the rules, much to his own dismay.

"You shouldn't be here!" He sneered, glaring at her. It was rare that Boniface got angry, and in all fairness, this wasn't exactly anger. He was mostly irritated. With a flick of his wrist, he could clean this mess up and call it a night. He was mostly hurt by the sheer lack of respect for him.

He ran a cold hand down his face, striking the soft bit of stubble. Now, what to do with her? This definitely constituted a detention, but what else? He was too irritated to think straight at the moment. All he knew was that he wanted this brat out of his sight so that he didn't have to deal with her for the time being.

But alas, his plants, his business. "Ye got a vendetta with my nettles, or just with me? Or if you're sneaking out for some romantic night in the greenhouses, then ye did a really bad job at covering it up. Ye'r a lousy criminal." He said, narrowing his eyes. It was the best he had for this time of night, anyway. Boniface wasn't anticipating giving a good talking-to to a student.

It was definitely clear that he was green. Unlike some other professors, he hadn't taught anywhere before this. Not only that, but Boniface didn't have much social experience to make him the worlds most requested professor. All that he had was a gift for planting things, and even that didn't feel like enough. As if he didn't already have a million different reasons to be insecure and unsure if he was making the right decisions, it was clear in how unprepared he was to handle this. Who was he kidding, anyway? Boniface wasn't a leader.

His eyes looked her up and down as if sizing her up. What could a short girl do anyway? Break plants, sure, but that seemed like an extremity for someone of her size. He didn't think she could do much worse than that, so he felt pretty lucky to be getting on the bad side of such an unthreatening kid. There were worse kids that he could make enemies of.

Enemies out of children, what was becoming of him?

He sighed once more, shaking his head. "Ye're in deep trouble, kid."

[quote]Her already nearly too-big eyes became even wider when she came face to face with... A giant? He was around two feet taller than her and it was terrifying. His words, although quiet, rang in her mind over and over again. She shouldn't be here? Well no shit, sherlock! Marla wasn't a genius, but she wasn't that stupid. Making eye contact with him, the Gryffindor felt chills course through her spine. He looked like he was going to kill her. Not get-into-really-bad-trouble kill. Literally end her life. She opened her mouth, about to think of an excuse on the spot, but the professor spoke again.

A romantic night in the greenhouses?! No! She had no time for... Relationships. Taken aback by his comment, calling her expression dumbstruck would be an understatement. "No! No to all of those! And especially tha last one! Ah don't have cooties," She said the last sentence with the utmost confidence, pridefully crossing her arms and standing upright. "Maybe yeh're just ah lousy professor, it was quite easy fah me to slip in here, Idunno, maybe put some of that... What was it called? The stuff tha' stabbed me in the hands n' felt like a porcupine all ovah the greenhouse. That'll show em," At this point, even Marla didn't know what she was rambling on about. It was late, she was out of her mind, and simply trying to chat her way out of detention... Again.

Professor MacTavish didn't even know her name, and even though his wand was lit up, it wouldn't hurt to try to run away, right? She was nimble on her feet, as uncoordinated as she was most of the time, and could probably outsmart him. The new herbology teacher seemed like a meathead anyway, she was a bit surprised his name wasn't Chad and that he didn't have a crippling addiction to Red Bull and American football. However, as much as her legs begged her to move, to run away from this stupid situation, one thing that Marla wasn't was a coward. She was caught, and therefore, she would face the consequences. It seemed his patience had run out before she could even say a word to him, so there was no sweet-talking her way out of this one. A defeated sigh escaped her lips, feeling a frown tugging at her lips.

What was... Professor MacTavish's definition of deep trouble? Detention? Suspension? Or... No. It couldn't be! Please don't be the cursed e-word. Hogwarts, as much as she hated it sometimes, was her home. If she were expelled then, honestly, Marla had no idea what she would do. "Are ye going to expel me?" There was not one trace of the confidence that was in her dialogue previously. Now imagining all of the worst outcomes of this encounter, she stared down at the ground, lightly kicking around the soil that had spilled when the nettle toppled over. Holding back tears, she awaited the professor's response, hoping for the best.

The Scottish man let out a roaring laugh. "Expel? Lass, do ye know how many of ye littluns would be expelled if I went around expelling every student who broke into a greenhouse? I don't even have the authority to do that; that remains with Professor Pendrast."

Boniface bent over, readjusting some plants that had been disturbed in all of the chaos. Carefully, his hands wrapped around the pot that contained the Nettle, picking it up to examine it. "This 'ere is called a Nettle. Tis a medicinal plant if ye know how to use it, but... Alone, it's just a bother, really." He shrugged, smiling at his healthy Nettle plant. His eyes then turned back to the girl, looking her up and down. "Best get ye to the infirmary before I send ye back to ye'r dorms. These buggers cause rashes if ye don't treat the wound right."

It was true that Boniface had the necessary equipment on hand to deal with this sort of thing, but it was late, and he was very tired. Though he was slightly annoyed by the young girl breaking into his greenhouse, and for likely no good reason at that, he wasn't so peeved that he would allow her to go untreated. The rash of a Stinging Nettle wasn't any fun to have, anyway.

He chuckled, shaking his head. "Aye, ye'll likely have a nasty rash for at least 24 hours. That's why I don't keep Nettle all over meh greenhouses. They're dangerous, ya ken?" He shook his head some more, placing the Nettle back where it belongs. "Can't say ye'll have any fun writing with that on yer hands either. If yer lucky, maybe they'll let ye stay until it's gone. But tis not that serious, so I doubt it."

His fingers made a quick gesture as he began to walk towards the exit. He paused for a moment, however, and turned back to look at her again. "An' ye never did say exactly why ye were in the greenhouses, of all the places. Aren't there cooler areas to sneak off ta? Especially at this unholy hour." Truth be told, Boniface wasn't really sure what time it was. It had to be the early hours of the morning at least, but not so early that students would be waking up soon. Just early enough for there to be moonflowers blooming, beaming out from their tangled vines. While it was true that you could tell what time of day it was by the sky, the same could also be said about the plants (sort of). At least... He could roughly guess, anyway.

Maybe he shouldn't be so upset with her. Boniface certainly wasn't perfect. Being the brave, independent, courageous Gryffindor that he was back in his time, he spent many of late nights in the greenhouses, staying well after curfew; sometimes even waking up there. However, he was there to study. Merlin only knows what this fiery girl was here to do, other than destroy his Nettles.
