Avery had actually woken up early on the weekend. Most of the time she woke up just in time to get dressed and head down to breakfast, but today was different. Today was a good day for a run. Something Avery usually despised, but for some reason a run felt great. After she had to run a couple laps for detention, she wanted to try it again. She had to stay fit for Quidditch. She couldn't slack. Not now. Not ever. After the events of her first Quidditch match and the last one of the year, she wanted to stay fit even though she wouldn't be playing again until the fall of her second year.

Avery pulled on a simple red crewneck sweatshirt over her head and pulled on some short black running shorts to match. Then she tied her old hiking shoes that had used for running and hiking in the past. Finally she braided her hair into twin french braids. Before she left, she took a quick glance in the mirror. Perfect. Well, not perfect, but good enough for a morning run on a Satuday.

Avery walked quickly down the stairs. She was eager to get outside and let the chill of the fresh air envelope and invigorate her.

Finally. She was outside and in the fresh air. She breathed in deeply. It was a beautiful day already with few clouds in sight and a beautiful sunrise on the horizon.

That's when she began to run. A simple jog at first that gradually turned into a flat out sprint. She panted hard as she ran across the grounds. The air around her not only leaving her slightly chilled, but also pressing her forward.

She had been running for only a short time when things took a turn for the worse. Black spots began to dot her vision and she felt like she couldn't breath. She ignored the feeling at first. Just thinking that it was the effects of a sprint, but that's when things went from bad to worse. Suddenly, Avery legs collapsed beneath her and she skidded across the ground and landed with a crash. She could barely breath as she gasped for air on the ground in a panic. That had never happened before. What was happening? Was she dying?

Avery tried to call for help and control her breathing, but neither one of those things were successful. She just hoped someone would find her soon or this would end. She was terrified.

Mikey hadn’t planned on being up this early. It wasn’t even one of those responsible, early bird kinds of mornings it was the kind where your eyes just open and you know sleep’s not coming back. So, he gave up. T-shirt and jacket on, trainers laced, half a napkin of leftover bangers and water bottle in hand he said goodbye KodoPodo who hadn’t stirred once, typical for this early.

The air outside was chilly but not bitter cold, still clinging to the coolness of dawn. The grass was damp underfoot and the sunrise was doing that thing where everything looked golden for a few minutes. Mikey wandered toward his usual quiet spot by the trees, left over sausages in hand and a plan to do absolutely nothing productive. That’s when he heard a strange noise.
It wasn’t a normal morning forest trail sound. Just a sound. A dull thump, then a sharp rhythm of gasping breaths, fast and frantic. His head jerked up. He didn’t even think. Reflexes took over and he dropped his snack and ran towards the noise. Someone was on the ground, not far off. Curled and shaking. It was a girl in a red sweatshirt. Mikey’s stomach dropped as he realized who it was. Her eyes wide like she couldn’t even see him yet. Like the world was too loud to register anything else.

He hit the grass on his knees beside her, not sure what he was even doing yet. There was no blood or visible injuries. Just that sound of sharp stuttering panic filling the space between them. “Hey, hey. I’m here,” he said, voice quieter now, more focused. “You’re okay. I’ve got you.” Mikey had seen this before. His cousin had asthma and he had helped her through a few attacks and recognized the signs.

He didn’t try to touch her. He just sank lower beside her, grounding himself and hoping she could feel it. “Breathe with me, okay?” he said gently. He held up a hand, steady and slow. “Just watch my hand. In when I say. Ready? In.” He inhaled. “Now out. Slow. That’s it. You’re doing great.” He just let his voice stay low and even. She didn’t need him to talk. She needed space and she needed calm. She needed someone to stay.

“I’ve seen this before. It feels like everything’s crashing, but it isn’t. sip some water if you can,” he said, quieter now, leaning in just a little more. “I’m not going anywhere, Avery.” Seconds passed. Her breathing was still shaky, but less frantic now. He stayed, still and steady, hand raised between them like an anchor. “You’re safe. Right here,” he said again. “I promise.” And then because it was Mikey he added, soft and serious with a flicker of his usual smile, “And if this is what running does to you, I officially vote we stick to dancing.” He watched her eyes soft. Waiting for her attack to pass enough to help her to the hospital wing.

Avery was still in a panic as she matched her breathing to Mikey's. She was terrified. She had never felt this way before, and had no idea if breathing would help. She felt like she was gasping and unable to get enough air into her lungs. The only thing keeping her from going into shock was the steady rise and fall of Mikey's chest and his gentle words saying she was doing great.

Once her breathing had calmed down enough for her to at least not gasp for air, she gratefully sipped down some water. The cool liquid rushed down her parched throat and left relief across her features. She was still weak, but as she looked in Mikey's eyes, her panic melted away. All that was left was a feeling of safety and knowing that she would be okay.

Tears began to well in her eyes as she slowly lifted her weak and exhausted off the ground. Since she was still weak from the attack, her upper half gave out and collapsed into Mikey. She rested her head against his chest and whispered a quiet, "Thank you." She was relieved her was there and had found her. She didn't know what would've happened if he hadn't been up this early.

She knew she had to get to the hospital wing and soon just in case another attack happened, but she just wanted to rest there in his arms. If only for just another moment before the shock of the world around her came back.

Mikey tried to keep his own breathing slow, steady, matching it with hers like he could will her panic away if he just stayed calm enough. The first few seconds felt like they stretched forever, like trying to pull someone back from the edge of a cliff when you couldn’t even see the drop. When she finally took a few shaky sips of water he was so relived ha almost wanted to shout and jump around. Then she leaned into him. Just sort of crumpled against him like the last wave in a storm finally giving up.

“It’s okay,” he whispered. His eyes drifted over the top of her head, to the sky beyond, like he was trying to hold everything still. Her whispered thank you hit him right in the chest. He swallowed, his throat suddenly tight and dry. “I’m just, I’m glad I was here. That I found you.” Was all he could say. What he didn’t say was ‘What if I hadn’t been.’ He forced the thought out of his head and put himself back in the moment.

He stayed with her. Still and grounding while she regained her breath and her strength. After a few breaths, he glanced down at her with a tentative smile. “Okay,” he murmured, voice still low. “When you’re ready, we’ll get you to the Hospital Wing. But there is no rush.” Then, with his usual grin sneaking through, he added. “I guess I will have to add rescuer of Gryffindor students to my CV.” He waited there not wanting to rush her, just giving her time to breathe. “You know if you ever need someone to lean on… you’ve got me. Okay?” He let silence follow his words. Like a silent promise while he waited for her to recover.

Avery nodded her head when he murmured an okay. She had almost stopped shaking enough to at least not collapse, but she was exhausted. Whatever had attacked her caused her to feel weak and sleepy. Two things she didn't want to feel. Especially at the moment. Though, she knew that she had to get up eventually. Her cheeks were probably a deep red of embarrassment. She felt bad for falling into him. It just made things more awkward. Though, she was also relieved that he had found her. She didn't know what she would have done if he were someone else.

"I think I'm almost ready to go." Avery said shakily as she slowly lifted herself off of him and tried to sit up. She had to show him that she was strong and not weak. Even though all she felt was weak at the moment.

She nodded when he said that she could lean on him when she needed someone. She was grateful that he had offered that. Something deep inside of her chest fluttered. She had never felt this way before. What did it mean?

Avery took another deep breath as she continued to try and calm herself down enough to not go into panic if she collapsed or her legs gave out when she stood. Maybe the shaking would stop soon, but she didn't know. All she could do was hope.

Mikey looked at her and adjusted his stance slightly as Avery started to get up. He kept his hands at his sides now not knowing if should offer more help or if that would put her in a more dangerous situation. His heart still raced, but it was different now. It didn’t feel like panic any longer. It felt more like a relief mixed with some odd feelings in his chest that caused him to be unsure what to do with it.

Mikey rubbed the back of his neck with one hand, looking down at the grass as if it could give him directions on what to say next. “Please take your time. There is no rush. We can stay here awhile longer if you need.” He briefly checked in with her eyes again then turned away like a compass that didn’t know where north was. His foot tapped nervously on the ground. The increased intensity of everything overwhelmed him, and he was uncertain what else to do to help her. He wanted to say something, anything, to fill the silence, but his thoughts felt jumbled together like a poorly kept library.

“I, um.” He glanced at her, feeling a rush of heat creep into his cheeks. "Back there, you, kind of freaked me out. My stomach is still doing loops. But you're okay so…” He let the thought trail off nodding like this made complete sense. But it didn't clear things up at all. His throat felt dry. In a small somewhat hurried voice, he added, "I mean, I'm, just, I'm glad I was here." Half hoping she wouldn't see, and half hoping she would, he fidgeted with a loose thread on his sleeve. “When you're ready, just let me know so I can help you to the hospital wing. You know, you really should to get checked out.”

Avery nodded her head in agreement. She felt bad for worrying him, but she didn't know what to say. For the first time, she was at a loss for words. All she did was breathe and muster up the strength to at least stand. She was glad that Mikey was there with her and that he was willing to help her get help. She needed to know what had happened to her.

"I think I'm as ready as I'll ever be to get checked out. Let's just hope my legs don't give out as we walk up the stairs." Avery said with a smile and a laugh.

After what Mikey had said about her giving him a scare, she didn't want to worry him any more than she already had.

Avery slowly stood on shaky legs. So far, she was able to stand on her own, but she didn't know for how long. She did know that she would probably be leaning a lot on Mikey which made her feel even more guilty. She didn't want him to feel like she was weak. Gryffindors were supposed to be strong and fearless. Not weak and unable to take care of herself and know that running was a bad idea.

Mikey watched with a nervus sort of energy as Avery got to her feet. He wanted to offer a hand and steady her but also didn't want her to feel week on incapable. It was a weird line to walk. Stuck between helping his friend in need and helping too much and making her feel fragile. He decided it would be best to stay close enough to catch her if she stumbled or needed him but still giving her room to breathe.

When she mentioned that she hoped her legs didn't give out he chuckled with her. "Don't worry I will catch you if you are falling." He said glad she was keeping her spirits up about her situation. It made him feel like they were in it together. Mikey stood by and at the ready as they took the first few steps back towards the castle. He kept finding himself staring at her and thinking -she's doing great. she's a lot stronger than she thinks.- Then he would realize that he was staring for what was probably too long and look away again.

He stayed at her pace as they walked. Slowing down when she did and matching her stride without making anything of it. Always remaining next to her if she needed to lean on him. Ready to catch her if she lost her balance or got light headed. "Are you doing ok? We can slow down if you need to. Or, you can lean on me for support." He wanted her to feel safe and comfortable. He had an idea of what was wrong and figured it would be best if she was as relaxed and calm as she could be until they figured this out.

Avery kept a steady but slow pace as her and Mikey made their way to the castle. She knew already that the stairs were going to be a nightmare. Having to climb up one flight was enough, but to go up three just to make it to the wing would be torture. Avery couldn't even imagine going up the two extra flights to her dorm after she was done in the Hospital Wing. Three flights was already enough for now. Getting to Gryffindor Tower would be another bridge she would have to deal with later.

"I think I'm okay for now if not a little winded. Though, if I'm winded on flat terrain, climbing three flights of stairs sounds like a nightmare. I will absolutely take you up on your offer on those." Avery smiled. Hoping she wasn't making things awkward between them with her comment. She was grateful that he was there and still willing to help her up the stairs and into the Hospital Wing where her fate lay.

They had finally made it into the castle and there they stood before the stairs. The ominous and menacing stairs that stood before her. Avery took in a shaky deep breath and began her journey. Leaning a little more into Mikey than she had been just as a precaution.

Mikey stuck with Avery as they kept a steady walk down the trail. His eyes occasionally drifting over to her and seeing her taking deep breaths. The shaking of her hands and the heaviness of her shoulder against his slightly increasing with every tilt or turn of the trail. He did not think much past the relief that she was feeling more level. Mikey gave her a small but smile when she agreed to accept his assistance up the stairs. "All right. Officially," he stated, "I will be your official stair buddy today."

Maybe it was residual adrenaline but his stomach still was a bit tense. Or maybe something else. He experienced a fluttering when she edged in slightly closer. A heat he did not quite comprehend yet. He didn't want to overthink it. But, as always, he did. His mind was racing with all the things that could go wrong. Was he being foolish? Should he have just run back up to the castle and left her there and gotten help? He thought it was already too late to do something about it and she was ok now, so there was no use playing the 'what if game.'

Mikey was struck by the seriousness of the situation as they were approaching the castle steps. He kept himself from being overwhelmed with the steps, which he knew were getting closer and closer. He glanced over at Avery again who wore a determined expression. He cleared his throat first and then said, "You're doing great." Mikey bumped her lightly with his shoulder, subtly enough to remind her he was still there. The archway's shadow now stretched across to the castle doors that were looming in front of them with the promise of rest. He took a deep breath and asserted, "We've got this, we're almost there."
