Ratatouille Would Never
Mikey hadn’t even made it five steps out of the library when it happened. One second he was adjusting the stack of books in his arms—trying not to drop the one on top that kept sliding and the next, there was a thud, a blur of motion, and suddenly he was flat on the floor. Books skittered in every direction.
He blinked up at the ceiling for a second, trying to piece together what hit him—and why someone was yelling about Ratatouille. Then her face appeared overhead. Frazzled. Apologetic and still very much in pursuit of something. “Oh. Hey,” he said, still half on the floor, brushing off his sleeve. “Are you okay?”
A tiny streak of fur zipped down the corridor past them, and Mikey instinctively pointed after it. “Um… I think your rat just took a sharp left and might be making a run for the kitchens.” He looked up at her again, cracking a grin. “Is that normal, or should I be worried that I just got tackled by someone in the middle of a rat-based crisis?”
He pushed himself up and started gathering his books without complaint. “Honestly, no judgment. This morning’s already weird and I haven’t even had breakfast yet.” He handed her one of her books and gave her a sideways look. “But also,” he added, a little teasing now, “calling your rat Ratatouille? That’s a lot to live up to. I don’t see a chef’s hat anywhere.” He dusted off his robes and nodded toward the end of the hallway. “I’m Mikey by the way.” Then he added. “Want some help?”
