Adlai had sprawled herself out on her stomach on a picnic blanket below the cool autumn sun. Her knitting needles in hand as she stitched together the wool bases of soon to be stuffed rabbits that she was making for her friends.
She had always loved rabbits, they were just kind and innocent creatures.

They reminded her of home where a Pygmy rabbit by the name of Dexter thumped around the hallways and bedrooms of her family.
Her grandmother, Mirha Abdel Nour, was never fond of Dexter thus every time her mother’s parents came to visit Dexter was safely hidden away in his little house on the back porch of their home.

Unraveling a length of the wool yarn that lay balled beside her, Adlai made a small loop around her knitting needles and began to slowly but surely finish the first base of her work.
She planned to give these stuffed rabbits as a Christmas gift to her friends before she would leave to see her family when winter break comes around.
During that time she would most promptly be celebrating Arba’een.

As a crisp autumn breeze rolled through the grounds Adlai pinned her hijab tightly to her head not wanting to let any of the cold air in.
Her cheeks and tip of her nose had become a delicate shade of red, her eyes seemingly more doe like.
She loved the cold, just like the rabbit it reminded of home, of Iceland and Wales.

This was one of the days when Aurelia would be spending some quality time with her pet Aspen. Aspen was not like many other pets who would prefer cuddles from their owners, no, great horned owls were not cuddly companions but rather independent individuals. The massive bird perched atop her wrist, protected by the thick leather of her falconry glove. Aspen hooted excitedly as Aurelia walked her down the owlery. It was time for her to finally hunt.

Once out in the open, Aspen took of. The owl was trained not only to deliver letters but to also draw near when Aurelia gave the signal. Circling majestically in the air, Aspen had surely caught sight of something as it swooped down. Prey. With haste, Aurelia tried to catch up with Aspen so to ensure that her pet’s next meal did not happen to be a student’s 20 galleon Pygmy Puff.

Aurelia arrived to the scene of a rabbit squashed under Aspen’s talons next to a younger student in Hufflepuff robes. Although it resembled uncannily of a rabbit, what Aspen pulled out of its flesh was not blood but fluff. Fluff. Upon examining the situation, the girl had a ball of yarn by her side and was knitting. Aspen had targetted a toy. The third year Gryffindor quickly rushed the the girl’s side, “Apologies, my owl had mistaken your stuffed rabbit for lunch.” She said.

When the great horned owl had swooped down unexpectedly from the sky above Adlai had felt her heart stop. It having crushed the first of her stuffed rabbit creations under its talons. Her almond shaped eyes had now turned into chestnuts as she looked up in the sky as if trying to warn herself if there were more.

Apologies, my owl had mistaken your stuffed rabbit for lunch.” she her from beside her. Looking in the direction of the voice she observed a girl that looked to be far older than herself. The girl had long straight hair that was the color of brown sugar, doe shaped the color of the Icelandic sea her Father had taken her to see one last time before leaving for Wales, and her skin -although it may sound strange- was the color of the biscuits her grandmother would make during Eid al-Adha.

“It’s ok, I have plenty of time to make another, I presume.” Adlai said, her mixed accent causing a loss of punctuation in her words causing some of what she says to sound of a young child’s foreign gibberish.
Watching the owl Adlai became curious. He looked like he was rather irate with the his grand down turned ear tufts.
“What’s his name?” She asked the girl rising from her stomach and sitting on her knees to be a well distance from the fine creature.

After partially annihilating the stuffed rabbit, Aspen came to realise that there was nothing edible in the insides of this strange prey. To say the least, Aspen was not the most intelligent of owls as she followed her instinct rather than anything else. Aurelia let out a small exasperated sigh in disappointment but a light smile somehow pulled at the corners of her lips. Aspen looked up at her with those bright golden eyes, and hooted in dissatisfaction. She would have to take to the skies ones more to find real lunch.

The girl’s accent was by far a unique one. Aurelia had her fair share of incomprehensible Scottish and Georgie accents which she had to decipher word by word mentally. But this girl’s accent was quite pleasant unlike those of the Americans’ that infiltrated Hogwarts not too long ago. “Her,” Aurelia corrected. She let out a sharp whistle, simple a command for her pet owl and the owl flew up her gloves arm to perch on comfortably.

Her name is Aspen,” Aurelia said, rubbing the massive bird’s cheek with a curled finger. “Aspen doesn’t usually bite,”the thirteen year old claimed although the eradicated toy might beg to differ. The proud owner extended her arm towards the younger girl for her to give Aspen a pet, but if she didn’t, Aureli would withdraw her arm before saying, “That was quite a work of art you had there. You wouldn’t mind illuminating me on how to create such a lovely piece of art do you?

Adlai used her pointer and middle finger to stroke the head of Aspen. “She’s beautiful.” She said.

“It’s really simple. You need to start out with the right materials first. The basics are getting yarn, needles, and the eyes. The base is a bit hard to knit together...” She went on to explain the simple weaving techniques that she used while making it. Knowing it could be confusing to someone who needs to learn hands on.
“But it gets much easier once you’re able to stitch it together.” She commented at the end.

“I can teach you how to make one, if you want that is. I don’t having any classes for the rest of the day.” She offered gesturing to the empty spot beside her if the girl decided to take up her offer. However, Adlai knew there was always the chance that she would not. Most likely due to the fact that the girl had lovely little Aspen with her.

“If not today then maybe the next time when you and I are both have free time.” she offered, a twinkle of hope emerging in her eyes.

Although Adlai was generally extremely talkative she tended to find herself alone. Her extroverted personality becoming drained of any form of energy during these moments. Thus, any excuse to find someone to hang out with was exceptional in her book. Especially if it meant making a new friend.

Growing up in an aristocratic pureblood family did not provide Aurelia with many opportunities to learn skills like knitting. Those finesse were mostly reserved for the house elves to do. Having just seen the work the first year had done certainly pique her curiosity. It seemed impossible to the Gryffindor that one could dish up a piece of art simply with a pair of strange looking sticks and a bundles of colourful frilly yarn.

The girl’s offer to teach her how to knit had evoked a sudden spark of excitement in her chest. The feeling was similar to how a child would feel upon unwrapping a pleasant birthday gift. A feeling the thirteen year old pureblood had not felt in a substantially long time. Concealing the short delirium with a collective facade of a warm smile, Aurelia almost made her way next to the girl and lowered down next to her.

Fortunately, transfiguration only begins in fourty five to fifty minutes and I would be more than happy to learn what you have to teach.” Aurelia states and her soft smile was subconsciously replace by a giddy grin. The bird pitched on her arm apparently did agree with its loud hoots.

The owl needed to spread its wings and hunt. The stuffed rabbit was nothing of a meal and Aspen was still hungry. Aurelia knew that if she didn’t let Aspen go, the massive bird would continue to pester her, leaving no peace to create a piece of art like the first year had. Very reluctantly Aurelia gave the command and Aspen took to the skies. “We can only hope Aspen would not come back with PygmyPuff fur all over her mouth.” Aurelia mumbled before turning to the Hufflepuff. “We haven’t officially met. I’m Aurelia.

Fortunately, transfiguration only begins in fourty five to fifty minutes and I would be more than happy to learn what you have to teach.” The third year stated which caused a broad smile to appear on Adlai’s face. No one had ever taken up her offer to teach them before. Many claiming the activity was one for the elderly.

We haven’t officially met. I’m Aurelia.” The third year said shortly after the magnificent creature named Aspen had flown away to find a real meal. “I’m Adlai.” She said stretching out her hand for Aurelia to shake.

Adlai then quickly set her knitting needles to the side, pulling an extra pair out of her hijab. She hid many things inside the cloth that sat upon her head. Especially after she learned this while she was in grade school. She’d most commonly smuggle small toys into school and miniature candies to share with her friends. As silly as this may seem to
Some, it worked perfectly for her.

Luckily her hair hasn’t weaved its way around the knitting needles like it had several times before. Adlai then placed the few balls of yarn she had out in front of her. One was the color of copper, another umber, then taupe, bronze, beige and finally khaki.
“Pick which one you’d like to use first.” She said.
