Note: This takes place before May 14, 2025, when Ruckus received his promotion. He is still the caretaker for the purposes of this detention.
It was a bright, crisp Saturday morning. Ruckus could feel the sun on his cheeks from above, but the night's cool breeze had splattered the ground in fresh dew, reminding him of the cold winter just past.

A perfect morning for a run.

The caretaker was getting on in years, sure. But his morning runs around the castle grounds kept him spry—which was needed considering the almost-headaches the students always tried to give him. Today he would begin his run a little later in the morning than usual because he would have a few guests joining him.

Sure, they had to be here against their will—but he hoped they would enjoy a few laps around the lake with him.

The students would have each received a note telling them to wear "clothes fit for physical fitness." When they arrived at the lake, they'd find Ruckus doing a few warm-up stretches in his fitness get-up, more in line with muggle fashion than wizarding. Simple, gray, nondescript, easy to move in, with a hood to keep out the chill.

"Welcome to detention! We're going to do a two laps around the lake. Hopefully, by the time yer done, you'll feel right tired and won't have the energy to stay up late t'night."

After all the students understood the instructions, he would ask, "And which one of you is Bree Grey? It's come to my attention that you were the party planner. Since ye enjoy going above and beyond, ye can run an extra lap. Don't worry we'll cheer ye to the finish line."

He would gesture next to him: The "finish line" was composed of a small table with cups of water and orange juice, little plates with mini-croissants, and a bowl of grapes.

"Alright, c'mon, everyone! You youngins can't let an old man beat ye!"
Ruckus's personal best for a 5K is 24:42, i.e., he's pretty fast. Good luck trying to keep pace!
Detention Rules

Graci had her first and hopefully but probably not last detention. And naturally it was running.

She didn't have anything against running... but she didn't particularly enjoy it. Though, it wouldn't be too bad for her because she was used to running laps from volleyball. You'd think volleyball would be less running than a lot of sports. She had ran more in volleyball practices than basketball practices last season.

Welp, might as well start already. But not keeping pace with him, I'll stay a bit behind... or start keeping pace and gradually figure out how slow I am.

Graci was quite glad she had decided to bring tennis shoes with her, if she hadn't she would be in deep trouble.

She started and soon found she was a weee bit out of shape, but she was nonetheless determined to keep pace with the... professor? She didn't actually know his title, she hadn't seen him before but she figured that if he was high enough of the ladder to give detentions he wasn't one to mess around.

Deigning it best to not be by friends she picked up her slowing pace and focused on her breathing, her one struggle when it came to running.

The two laps were a lot longer than she had estimated, but her determination to not be last was stronger than her need for rest. Apparently running was just a mental battle but she disagreed, it was a physical one too.

Ugh, note to self, never get detention again. Or at least make it worth it then. Or do it with a different teacher.

Graci wasn't one to be really reflective but she realized this was a learning opportunity. Most punishments were.

Lap two almost over. This sucks. A lot. Once I'm done I'm leaving. Not talking to anyone.

Graci finished her laps panting, a stitch in her side, and further behind than she would've liked, but definitely not last. Good riddance detention.

Mikey had known the second he opened the note and saw “clothes fit for physical fitness” that this detention wasn’t going to involve dusting trophies or scrubbing cauldrons. Nope. This was going to be one of those detentions the kind that made you wonder if your legs would ever forgive you.

He showed up wearing an oversized hoodie, jogging shorts that were just slightly too short, and a pair of trainers that had definitely seen better days. His breath formed a mist in front of him in the crisp morning air as he eyed the lake with mild suspicion. Two laps didn’t sound that bad. Until you remembered how massive the lake actually was.

“Good morning, Ruckus,” Mikey mumbled, already regretting life. The caretaker looked way too excited about this. Still, he gave a small nod of respect. Mikey wasn’t exactly new to detention. But this one felt oddly wholesome? Grape bowls? Croissants? It was the most civil punishment he’d ever received. When Ruckus pointed out Bree and gave her the extra lap, Mikey couldn’t help but shoot her a sympathetic look and a small grin.

“You know,” he said to no one in particular as he started jogging, “at least if we pass out, we will have a scenic view to keel over next to.” His legs already hated him. His lungs were working overtime. But somewhere, deep down, it did kind of feel good. It honestly reminded him of being back in his old school. He remembered having to run around the football pitch every year for P.E class back in Liverpool.

He was able to lose himself in the rhythm of his steps and made what he thought was pretty good time. There were a few students out pacing him and Ruckus was way faster than he looked. By the time Mikey crossed the finish line he was completely exhausted. He found a soft patch of grass and dropped down trying to breath like a normal person and failing. He was glad the run was over and was pretty sure he learned his lesson.

Kaitlyn trudged up to the lake, the soles of her shoes scraping the grass as she walked. Ever since they were caught after curfew, she had been in a foul mood. She hated herself for not noticing the time and leaving sooner … and, more importantly, hated herself for even attending the gathering. What did she get in return? A detention! And for the most mundane thing! If she had to be honest, she would’ve thought that she would’ve gotten a detention for visiting Hogsmeade, visiting the Forbidden Forest, taking a swim in the lake, or even for merely walking around not in uniform (she honestly wore sandals whenever she could).

The young Slytherin let out a soft sigh as she joined the other students in detention. “Hi, Mr. Weems,” she greeted him cheerfully, ignoring her simmering anger, as she arrived. She glanced at the other students, but didn’t greet any in particular. While not mad at any of them, she also wasn’t in the mood to talk. Her blue eyes widened in surprise at the mention of the detention, as she played with her pigtail braids.

As she was wearing the regular Slytherin girls' uniform, Kaitlyn was thankful for having chosen to wear her flat Mary Janes for this detention … along with a longer skirt than normal. When they began to run, Kaitlyn opted for a more moderate pace. ‘I would try to keep up with Mr. Weems … if I were dressed differently. I wouldn’t be surprised if he saw me running before. I like waking up extra early to come out here to run … never around the lake, though. My usual path is near the edge of the Forbidden Forest, past the shore of the lake, down to the pathway to Hogsmeade, then back to the entrance hall. Maybe I’ll run around the lake more … especially as the flowers bloom. I love flowers,’ she thought, a light flush blooming on her cheeks.

Glancing over her shoulder, Kaitlyn looked briefly at the shiny surface of the lake. ‘I wonder how much trouble I’d get in if I accidentally tripped and fell into the lake. I’m nowhere near that clumsy, but part of me wants to do it … Ah, not during a detention … Maybe some other time … and maybe at a time where an accident would be believable,’ a small smirk formed on her lips.

While her mind raced with thoughts, the two laps flew by. Nearing the endpoint for the second lap, Kaitlyn slowed and came to a halt. She sat on the ground, stretching. She was clearly sweating, with a few drops of sweat dripping from her braids. Otherwise, she looked like the run barely phased her.

Urgg, Ellie was going to be in so much trouble! She had kept a clean slate of no detention until that party! What was she thinking! Why would she join in the fun when, of course there was going to be a punishment, she should have known. And detention was one thing, but when her parents found out... she would never hear the end of it!

Ellie had gotten a note about the detention telling them to wear "clothes fit for physical fitness." Ok? I guess then I don't have to do something boring in a classroom I guess. Ellie had heard of all sorts of crazy punishment teachers gave students but this seem more... moderate? From what the letter made of it, it seemed they were probably running. Ellie had never enjoyed running but she never hated it either. Running was good though so... also nothing like a early morning run to get yourself pumped, right? There goes my optimistic brain!

Ellie put on her running shoes she had thankfully decided to bring with her. She put on these cute pants she had bought before coming to Hogwarts and paired it with a simple yellow shirt. Got to show my Hufflepuff pride! Once she was ready, she walked down to the Great lake where Rukus was saying that they were going to be running with him. Aha! So I did guess correct! he explain how it was going to be two laps around the lake. Ellie didn't want to look at him since she was still mad about the detention so this helped. She looked at the lake. It looks bigger than I remember it being! Two laps around that thing! Well if I fall asleep in class, teachers, don't blame me! You can blame Mr. Weems! Oh my Lord! But then agian, a run could be good! Ellie also couldn't stay mad at Bree, she was so nice!

Where was Bree, Graci, and Avery? Ellie thought, for these were the only girls she knew from the party. Ellie had only met them once but they quickly became close friends, so where were they?

Ellie was a good friend, but she also wanted to get this over and done with, and who knows! Maybe this would spark a love for running in her! Also there was a cup of orange juice at the end of the finish line, calling her name! She saw one boy had already started so it was time to start running!

Ellie started off a little bit faster than she would have liked but soon her arms got the rhythm. Ellie had more of a dancer builds so normal when she ran it was dainty but if course who has a childhood without a few games of tag so that is where most of her running skills came from! (Which is sort of weird!).

Pretty soon, Ellie's hands and feet got into place with each other so she was able to keep her pace, much like she was used too. Perfect! Maybe this won't be so hard after all!

Ellie finished one lap in good time but was starting to feel cramps. She put one hand on the cramp and started messaging it, a trick her mom had taught her. Even through the cramp, running wasn't so bad, of course though, Ellie couldn't wait to be done!

The run went by faster than Ellie expected and pretty soon, she was taking the last turn in the road. Just. About 20 more feet to go! Wanting to get it done, Ellie ran a little faster and crossed the finish line. She skid to a stop, took a deep breath and grabbed a cup of orange juice, a croissant, and placed some grapes on the plate. She ate it knowing this would be her breakfast. No way am I going into the Great Hall after running all that for breakfast!

I grinned, frightening a few of the other students. Now this was my type of detention. There was nothing better than a good run to wake up you up and start the day. I inwardly thanked my father for forcing me to run with him in the mornings since I was 4. I smirked at the groans of my companions in penal servitude when their slow brains figured out just what exactly we were doing. I smiled at the caretaker, who looked slightly taken back at my jovial attitude.
"Good morning Ruckus! Isn't this a great day for a run?"
I grinned again at the caretaker before moving away. I started randomly singing a song as the sweet, sweet tones of Michael Bublé were filling up my head as I memorized the sound and background noises that the song had. I hummed along, ignoring the shocked looks from other students as I ran with ease. I sang a bit along, feeling that the lyric were truly made for today

"Birds flying high
You know how I feel
Sun in the sky
You know how I feel"

I sang feeling my soul fly out into the sun, free as the bird in the song.

"Breeze driftin' on by
You know how I feel
It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life
For me
And I'm feeling good
I'm feeling good"

I grinned at the part where he sang "feeling good" because I was. Today was a great day and I was going to take advantage of it.

Avery was tired. She groaned internally when she got the note that said to wear "physical fitness" clothes. She already guessed what they were going to do, and she wasn't exactly excited. Though, spending time with Mikey and her new friends would be great! That alone would probably be what propelled her to keep going even though she knew it would be hard on her.

She walked down the stairs and towards the Great Lake. She wore a red sweatshirt that was a little big on her paired with some short black shorts. She also made sure to grab an old pair of tennis shoes she used whenever she went hiking since they were the easiest to run in.

Once she had arrived at the lake she waved to her friends before managing a "Morning prof." To professor Weems before beginning her run.

She was breathing hard by the end of the first lap as she tried to keep up with her friends. There was no way that she would be able to keep up with the fastest runners. The only time she ran fast was when adrenaline filled her.

Towards the end of the second lap, Avery was gasping for air as dark spots edged her vision. She was exhausted and collapsed in a heap next to everyone else as she gasped for breath. She still didn't know why this happened whenever she did strenuous activity. Maybe she would pay a visit to the Hospital Wing? No. It wasn't worth it. Colin was no longer an intern since the program was disbanded, so trips to the wing made things a little more nerve racking since she hadn't personally met the new healer yet.

aspian had been so excited. Detention! His first one, and probably not the last. A rite of passage, really. Detention meant you were interesting. A little daring. It was practically a badge of honor.
He’d imagined something classic—polishing trophies, maybe scrubbing cauldrons by hand, but then his excitement faltered, brow furrowing as he read the instructions once, then again. “Clothes fit for physical fitness.”
Caspian had stared at those words like they had personally betrayed him, then read it again in disbelief. Physical what?!
“This is cruel and unusual,” he muttered, collapsing backwards onto his bed like a Shakespearean tragic hero. Running? Running?! This was not what he had signed up for. So now here he was: trudging toward the lake at an hour he considered offensive, in the most tragically unflattering outfit he owned, greeted by sunshine so aggressive it felt like it was mocking him.
The lake sparkled. The breeze was crisp. Birds were singing.
Caspian wanted to hex all of it.
“Morning,” he mumbled to Ruckus, as if he were arriving at a funeral.
The laps were pure torture. His legs felt like they were auditioning for a tragic ballet. His lungs? Decorative. Absolutely useless. By the end, Caspian collapsed theatrically in the grass, one arm flung over his forehead.
“Tell my parents I loved them,” he gasped, voice hoarse with despair. “ And if Bree survives this—avenge me.”
A beat passed.
Then, from the edge of his vision, he saw it: the refreshment table.
His eyes squinted against the cruel sunlight. “Are those…croissants?”

When life gives you lemons, squirt them in someone's eyes. - Caspian Villin

I sigh as I open the note that says what to wear. I groan as I throw on some sweats and a top that I brought from home. Suddenly I feel super grateful for having my grandma and her love of the muggle world. Otherwise I would have nothing to wear. I head out to the great lake and see everyone else there. Graci, Mikey, Avery, Ellie, Alexis and so on. I couldn't help but smile when I saw Mikey. Apparently he and I can't stay out of detention. But this time the reason for detention was fun! The party was awesome! And I was so happy that everyone there was getting along! And I was super happy to see that.

When I get there I see the Mr. Weems was dressed for running too and finishing stretching, "Mornin' Mr. Weems!" I say as I walk towards the crowd of kids. I listen to his instructions and sigh. At least the party was fun while it lasted. Andronica left just before he came. Lucky her! She doesn't get detention. Although Im highky suspecious that either her or Emalyn got us caught. Most likely Emalyn. Not really her fault though. She just was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

I resist the urge to roll my eyes and sigh angrily when I learn I have an extra lap. Mikey shot me a sympathetic look and grin. I give him back a small smile and thumbs up. I look around and see that at the finish line was water, grapes, orange juice, and croissants. Wow, I thought, he really knows how to make a finish line. I sigh as I start running at a simple pace. One that wasn't too fast but not too slow. I run past Nyx who looks like shes having the time of her life. She had her headphones in and was listening to some song and singing with it. Also smiling. I wonder if she runs often. Then I pass Kaitlyn. She was wearing her school uniform and had braided pigtails. She didn't look very happy even though she sounded happy when she said hi to Mr. Weems. But now she seemed fine with running. Maybe she runs every day too! Wow maybe I should start doing that.

I mumble a quick hi to Ellie as I pass her going onto my 3rd lap. She was at the refreshment table eating. I continue to run and my legs start hurting. Soon I end up just focusing on my breathing and ignore everything else. Breath in, hold for a second, breath out. Before I know it I'm done and at the refreshment table again. I catch my breath then drink some water and nibble on a croissant.

Note: This takes place before May 14, 2025, when Ruckus received his promotion. He is still the caretaker for the purposes of this detention.
Ruckus grabbed a small cup of water off the table he had prepared. He had barely broken a sweat, but from the looks of it, two laps was enough for most of the detentioners. A few of them had happily excelled, however. He noticed the only second-year, @Kaitlyn Connor, seemed to be an accomplished runner. @Bree Grey even kept a steady pace with her extra lap. And @Nyx Blackheart sang while running—a true feat.

"Ye three have a knack for runnin'. I'm here every mornin', usually around sunrise, if ye'd like to join me again. Us wizarding folks ignore fitness a bit too much, I think."

The other runners were collaposed in pile, conveniently next to the snack pile. @Caspian Villin, in particular, was putting on a show of how tired he was—though he wasn't too tired to reach for the croissants.

"The rest of ye are welcome to join me runs as well. Ye probably need to build up some stamina. Just because ye can magic away heart disease, doesn't mean should ye go lookin' for it in the first place."

One member of the fallen heap didn't seem to be exaggerated her heavy breathing. In fact, @Avery Gray's gasps had a troubling quality to them. "Miss Gray? Are you okay? If ye don't feel alright, I'd be happy to walk ye to the hospital wing."
