now my fears, they come to me in threes

It was near evening, right around now, Gem kicking a pebble around like it was a football. His hands were all deep in his pockets, mind racing with any sort of possibility that something bad might happen. If something bad didn't happen, he'd make sure it did. He could thank his anxiety for that, stressing over stuff when his life was good.
He had a lot right now, good grades, friends, he even had a girlfriend - he hadn't expected that, maybe that's what he was all worried about. Love was something that hadn't been presented as a good thing, in Gem's life. His parents had always been stone cold towards each other, hardy showed a lick of attention to one another, fought constantly, his mam cried and his dad brooded. He'd been told that his parents were meant to love each other by nearly everyone he met, so that stuck with him. They loved each other, that's what love was like, it was supposed to be something nice and savory.
Except it never felt nice and savory. It felt bitter and it smoldered in the cold, it made him think that he never ever wanted to fall in love. Leland told him he didn't understand what love was really like, he said that he wouldn't get it until it felt good, so good it hurt. His mam never told his dad she loved him, and his dad never even looked at her. That was love, that's what love would amount to someday. He didn't want it. So he was wondering, maybe he should just break up with Brielle before they got to that point, that sort of miserable air that'd inevitably raft around them until it made its move. He was afraid of that, loving Brielle so much he hated her. Maybe he didn't even love her, maybe he just liked her and that's why it didn't hurt. The butterflies were dying, but they were faint, it was just a level of comfort now.
He would follow the pebble wherever it landed, after he kicked it. Over and over again, breathing in the nice, cold air. His arms were protected by a Zero sweater, embroidered all nice, his pants hanging off his hips, blowing against his legs. His sneakers slid across the cobblestone, and it was quiet except for the light patter of the pebble, and the drag of his shoes.
He was afraid, and bad things always came from fear. Impulse came from fear, and he found it made him say the strangest things, sometimes. Just sometimes.
What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though.

Coming to the grounds always gave Brielle a nice sort of feeling, a feeling where she could escape all of the mess tied to her life at that moment. Today was certainly one of those days, her brain so racked with over-whelming thoughts it made her sick. It was like there was an empty pit at the bottom of her stomach, where butterflies used to flow, yet they have seemed to die out and lie there still instead.
She had gotten a boyfriend, so she supposed she amounted to something in somebody's eyes. It still wasn't enough, though, to just have one person tell you that you mattered. She was grateful for it, no doubt, though she felt like even the one person she claimed to love may have been a mistake. She loved him, god, she really did. She wanted to keep him in her life forever, though she felt as if she was the only one to produce those feelings.
These thoughts are what caused her to cry at night, a quiet faint sob that could be heard from her dormitory. The other girls didn't dare ask what the matter had been, all too caught up in themselves to worry about another snake. Perhaps she should start being more in line with her house, maybe she should live up to the Slytherin in her blood. Maybe the reason she was hurting was because she wasn't.. normal?
As she found herself leaning against a tree, she couldn't help but faintly smile under the sorrow expression she had been wearing. It had been the tree she had fell out of when Gem came and brought her to the Hospital Wing. That day seemed so long ago, so distant and different from now. Her outfit consisted of an old band shirt she had cropped in half, and long black sweatpants to protect her from the cold winds that nipped at her skin.
As she crouched beneath the tree, she buried her face in her knees and let out a small whimper. Why was being happy such a struggle for her?

Maybe it was because he couldn't ever communicate. Gem was emotional, and while he'd been told that a lot of girls liked boys heavily in touch with their emotions, he wasn't the good kind of emotional. The constant self-doubt, the whining, the need for validation, they were all things that his father had claimed to have been annoying. He often wondered if that was a discreet gesture at the prospect his father found him annoying.
He rubbed his eyes, chewing the inside of his cheek all mopey like until he was sore. He'd finally gotten to an area of grass, all smooth - sort of empty, but a few students sitting together doing homework with one another. He got a brief rundown of the people around him, spotting Brielle right there, all curled up and sad. He wasn't sure if he should go and ask what was wrong, or if he should turn on his heel and leave because of the possibility that he was the problem. He weighed out his options for a moment, and then decided to do something real quirky.
He went up to the tree, but sat on the other side of it, back hitting the bark. He had his legs spread out, his hands hanging limply at his side. He wondered if she would notice, he thought it'd be funny if she didn't realize he was even there at all. He didn't even know why he did it, it wasn't even solving anything. He was just sitting there, on the other side of that fateful tree, waiting for absolutely nothing in particular. This was something to live by, how hasty of him.

Sitting there alone was nice. Well, at least it was nice until she heard the sound of leaves crunching around her on the other side of the tree. She didn't bother looking up, too out of it to care if they saw her like this. Normally she would scold herself for allowing herself to show this much vulnerability in public, though something now just felt.. lost. Like she didn't have another strength to care anymore.
With a small ounce of curiosity, though, Brielle lifted her head slowly to sneak a glance of the person on the other side of the tree. She couldn't see their face without moving, though their hair caused her breath to hitch. With a wince, she immediately returned her eyes to her side, unable to even think of the person near her. It wasn't that she disliked Gem, or felt bad for dating him, she just couldn't stand the thought of him not having the feelings he once had for her.
With a deep breath, Brielle then stood up shakily and dusted the grass off her pants, pushing back the loose strands of hair out of her face. She turned sharply on her heel, turning to face Gem. It took all that was in her to not burst into tears, her perfect smile wavering as she maintained a content expression.
"Funny seeing you here.." She blurted out stupidly, the quiver in her voice faint but still noticeable.

"Funny seeing you here.."
"Quite." Gem said with a curt grin, keeping his place stilled, unmoving unless he'd decided to blink. He saw that she stood up out the corner of his eye, but he liked sitting more. He was being impolite, very casual, he could've even been aloof, had he not made the decision to fall backwards, his head hitting the tip of her shoes. He was staring right up at her now, tired brown eyes boring into glassy green ones.
It was very clear that she was distressed, the way she spoke all sad and had a wavering smile on her face. He would've normally sat her down and asked her what was wrong, but that made it too easy for her to lie and say she had allergies or that she was stressed - he knew that wasn't what was wrong, if she had allergies, he'd know. She'd probably tell him. In that case, he would start to lint roll all the cat fur off his clothes so it was easier for her, but he never really knew how allergies worked. All that aside, he figured he'd gradually work it out of her because he was curious about that, how she felt. Why she felt that way.
"Wot bands do ya listen to?" He inquired as a matter of factly, staring at the bottom of her shirt, and even up it, seeing things he shouldn't have seen. "I can't see yer shirt. The design, I mean, but it looks like a band. Wot band is it?" His voice was light but flat, sort of like a soda that had lost its fizz. He wondered if she would burst into tears right now, he wondered if she wanted him to ask her if she was all right. He wondered a lot of things, and they all twirled around his head at once. Still, he had his ears open for her answer.

Her eyes meeting his practically broke her, causing her to shift uncomfortably with a turn of her head. Part of herself wanted him to ask her what was wrong, to talk with her and tell her she was just over her head.
Though the other half couldn't bare to understand if he didn't 'love' her anymore. Both options would result in a nice cry, so it didn't really matter which route they took.
Her shirt.. Yes, right, the shirt she had been wearing. It wasn't particularly an old band, rather just a duo she had come to like. It was the album cover of The Life and Times Of a Paperclip by The Garden, a rock duo she really adored. Of course she wouldn't say it aloud, though she thought the twins were pretty cute, a little old for her, but cute.
"Just ah- Silly muggle duo. The Garden.." She said faintly, rubbing a hand on her other arm. She then sat down next to him on the grass, crossing her legs with her hands now in her lap. Although she couldn't bring herself to meet his eyes, she reached out for his hand, hoping he didn't tear away. His hands were warm, giving her a light sort of feeling that calmed her down. Maybe she was in over her head, maybe she was freaking out for nothing. Maybe..

"I love the Garden," Gem said, running his thumb over her knuckles by instinct. He hadn't remembered when he'd gotten into them, but it was a band he found on his very own, which he was very proud of. He wondered if he should make a conversation about them, the twins, but he felt like... maybe she didn't know anything about them. He suddenly wanted to know if she did, so his chin tilted up, scanning her expression for any sort of telling emotions. There were a whole lot. "Wyatt n' Fletcher... which one's yer favorite? I like Wyatt more, but tha' might joost be me bias, since I like Enjoy more than Puzzle."
He felt a bit embarrassed, spouting all that information out like that. Maybe she didn't get it - but why wouldn't she? He was being condescending, wasn't he? He could never be sure, he never really was very aware about what he said until it took affect, like a slow-working pill. He should change the subject.
"I like e' song Stallion," He paused, even if he knew exactly what he was going to say next. "Or All Smiles Over Here. I like that one a whole lot, too. I think music tends ta make things more real, sometimes. Their music, especially."

Chris had been walking around the grounds of Hogwarts for a while, exploring and taking in the scenery of the castle as the sun started to go down in the horizon. He was in deep thought about what he had had achieved so far, such as how well he was doing in lessons and the different friends he had made so far. One person was in his mind the most though, a girl who he had met at the lake. A fellow Slytherin named Illowy had been someone who caught his attention, she shared a lot of what he loved greatly especially the love of violins. Chris was curious to know more about to her, and learn about her past before Hogwarts, but who knows the next time they'll see each other.
The boy slowly walked into a wooded area and strolled down the pebbled path, his eyes gazing into the tress and the surrounding area. The weather was quite cool and nippy, yet he was only wearing a smart short sleeved checkered shirt and blue jeans which seemed out of place in this type of condition. When he got halfway towards the end of the path something caught his eye, two people seemed to be sitting down by a tree, one each side. Chris could clearly see who was at the front, it was a boy who he recognised but couldn't seem to remember the name of. The lad was from the great lake, the same kid who butted into his conversation before leaving to help a clumsy first year. Wait, that's it, the Ravenclaw never shared his name in the first place, no wonder the name didn't come to mind. The person behind the tree was unseen for now, the feet poking to the side was the only sign of someone being there.
Chris stopped in the path and looked over to them, before hesitantly walking over to the boy sitting down next to the tree "Hey lad, long time no see!" he shouted over to him, his head slightly turning to its side to try and identify the person who he was speaking too "Who you speaking too?

While Gem waited for an answer, he felt movement nearby -- right next to him, actually-- and turned his head, squinting at the speaker until he got a right look at his face. He remembered him, that was the chap that had been there when he met Brielle in the first place! What a small world it was.
"Aye, nuffin' much, laa, how've you been then?" He tilted his chin up at him, a closed-lipped smile stretching his cheeks up, mostly to be polite. He hadn't the faintest idea what this kid's name was, and he didn't know for sure if he should ask. Instead, he slipped it into an introduction - a second one, since he didn't really introduce himself the last time, but, well... they were in each other's presence. "Never caught yer name, did I? M' Gem, pleasure."
"This here? Oh, s' me lady, Brielle? She was the bird who fell out ov a tree, remember tha'?" He exhaled, rubbing his eyes with the back of his hand. He felt very lazy, very very lazy, careless. He wanted to lay down in the grass and listen to music, which was sudden-- he was very aloof and very happy, he could just start whistling, singing all around. He wished he'd brought his guitar, maybe he could run and go get it -- oh, but that would require moving, hm. That diminished the compelling idea, maybe he'd just lay down. Yeah, that sounded nice. That sounded great.

"I dunno- I think I'm going with Fletcher on this one. Enjoy is a good album though" She replied with a smile, almost showing teeth. It was true though- Brielle preferred Fletcher over Wyatt any day. She just thought he really went deep into things, at least from what she could tell when she used to watch their interviews. Plus- He had nice hair.
She read his face, scanning for any uncertainty. He seemed to look embarrassed, that or just really flustered. She thought it was cool, though, that he liked them. She'd been practically begging Aph to get into them but it hasn't really worked, so excuse her if finding someone to talk about them to made her day.
"Egg is pretty dope not going to lie.." She said with a shrug, only to then jump at the sudden approach behind them. She hadn't seen them before, and if she had, she certainly didn't remember them. As she opened her mouth to speak, she had been cut off by Gem, who greeted the stranger first.
It then clicked. It had been the boy that stood up for the little Hufflepuff by the lake. The one she had been looking at when she was in the tree. The tree they were sitting under.. She knew he was a Slytherin the more she observed his face, recognizing him from the house common room. It was weird, how the world went around. It seemed like everyone was connected in some way these days.
At the mentioning of herself, it caused Brielle to blush profusely, glancing up at nothing to practically disregard it. She wasn't going to lie, it made her happy, to hear him talk about her like that. Like he was showing her off as his girl, it was nice. She wondered if she should do that with him, like tell her friends she was dating him. Perhaps. She then gave way to a small wave and grin, fiddling with the strings on her sweatpants.
'God, you're only twelve Bri! Get a hold of yourself. Jesus, this probably wont last 'till Christmas..; Is the only thought she could focus on. It was like a war, between herself and her feelings. God, who knew it would be this stressful. She was just looking for a friend, a close friend. She thought it would be like in the books, the fairy tales. Maybe she was wrong.
