First Times and Expectations
Alright Lily…this is it. You’re finally going to Hogwarts!
Young Lily Ryan thought to herself excitedly as she was led by her parents. Her father, a muggle, looked around King’s Cross with curiosity as her mother…her mother was on edge. Lily watched her mother as she seemed to look at everything and everyone they passed. Her hand clenched into her coat, Lily knowing full well that her hand was holding her wand tight.
Lily followed in silence as they approached closer to platforms 9 and 10. Lily’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Where was the platform form 9 and 3/4? It should be here, she looked around to ask for help when her mom knelt down and looked at her sternly.
”Listen closely, Lily. Remember what I’ve told you, be on your guard, do your best and most importantly…have fun. The platform is right in-between the barriers of 9 and 10. Nice paced jog right at the wall and you’ll be at the train.”
Her mother gave her a one of her rare smiles which made Lily beam. She hugged her mum tightly and then her dad who ruffled her hair. She gave a huff and swatted her dad’s hand away.
”You’re messing up my hair, dad.”
Lily hugged her dad tightly before letting go. She took a shuddering breath before grabbing a hold of her luggage trolley and facing the barrier.
”Alright…I’m off.”
She broke into a run…right at the barrier…what happened if it didn’t work? Was it a prank? She shut her eyes, expecting a crash and pain…but…nothing? She opened her eyes and gasped at what she saw. She took in her surrounds, suddenly feeling overwhelmed. She quickly made her way onto the train, struggling to drag her luggage behind her until she found an empty compartment. With an exasperated breath, she slumped into a seat and looked out the window…waiting for her life at Hogwarts to begin.

First Times and Expectations
She had been lost in thought as she was staring out the window, watching students rushing onto the train. Lily was thinking of taking out one of her books to read when she heard the compartment door open. She quickly looked away from the window to look at the girl standing in the compartment door. She had short black hair and if Lily had to guess, was a first year like her despite the girl being a bit taller than Lily was although...most kids her age were taller than her. She was a bit shorter than average height, by about 3 inches. She gave the girl a hesitant smile and nodded.
Of..of course.
She spoke in a quiet voice, just shy of being a whisper. She opened her mouth to say more but stopped. She took a nervous breath and tucked a strand of black hair behind her ear. She wasn't going to make friends by staying silent. As her father says; "A stranger is just a friend you have met yet!" When she spoke, her voice was at normal volume.
I was lucky to find this one empty. It...would be a shame to hog it to myself. I'm Lily..Lily Ryan.

First Times and Expectations
Her eyes widen. Yes! Thanks, Lily. I’m Ruby. Ruby Diumme. She sat down beside her and adjusted her barrette. Actually, it was a clothing peg! It was a silly choice, but she loved being peculiar. I think she’s pretty baffled. She got out a book and started to get lost in its pages. It was Charm Your Own Cheese, a cook book that her mother showed her, and gave to her. She loved reading it and hence became a little bit of a good baker. She had more expertise and experience in baking. Pancakes were her specialty. Speaking of food, she got out egg sandwiches, three in all. Poor thing, she may be hungry! Just wondering, you hungry, Lily? She took a bite out of a sandwich. Ruby swept away some of the crumbs that have fallen on her thighs, and while Lily thought about it, Ruby held out an unopened sandwich. It’s not like it’s poison, haha. Ruby smiled hesitantly. Let’s hope I don’t seem weird. On the bright side, she seems quite okay with me. Let’s hope that she accepts or at least declines very polite, and we have no beef, even though she probably likes eating it!

"It's nice to meet you Ruby."
She couldn't help an amused smile as she watched the girl sit beside her. She seems nice..odd but in this world it would be odder to be..well..normal. Lily thought to herself as she stared back out the window, losing herself in her thoughts..until she heard Ruby ask her something. She turned her blue eyes to the girl, opening her mouth to answer, but before she could, her stomach gave a loud growl. Lily's cheeks heated. She had rushed her parents out of the house as fast as she could in her excitement to get to London.
"I-I may have forgotten to eat breakfast this morning..Thank you Ruby!"
She reached out and took the sandwich gratefully. Unwrapping it and taking a bite, barely suppressing a soft groan of delight as she chewed and continued to eat. She enjoyed the silence that followed, it was a comfortable silence. Lily’s mum had been paranoid and didn’t let many people into their home let alone allow Lily to meet with anyone her mother didn’t trust. Meaning…Lily didn’t hand out with many friends. Once she finished eating, she turned to face Ruby.
"That was delicious..thank you again, Ruby. Are you a first year too?"

First Times and Expectations
Yes, I am a first year. Oh, Lily seems so nice. Ruby ate some more and got out another book. Magical Drafts and Potions, her textbook for Potions. She skimmed it a bit and looked interestedly at the Wolfsbane Potion.
It was a, like, anesthesia for werewolf symptoms. Interesting! She got her journal and wrote.
"September 1, 2025
Lily Ryan's actually a pretty cool girl! Amazing. Perhaps I could become friends with her?"
Slowly but surely, Ruby began to warm up to her. As she was reading Magical Drafts and Potions, she kept on looking at Lily. Friends aren't so bad. So, Lily, what House d'you think you'll be in? Personally, I think I might be a Ravenclaw. Although Hufflepuff might be a possibility. You seem like a... Hufflepuff or a Slytherin. She said it a bit hesitantly. Ruby then peered at all the potions on her book and thought something horrible. What if I'm terrible at Potions?! I'm not too good at math! Math is something I hate! And what if Lily's so good at Potions, she rejects me when I try to talk to her since she will view me as a dunce?! Then, her calm collected inner voice spoke. Lily wouldn't say that, silly. She seems to like you! You're right. Thank you. No problem.

"I'm a bit nervous to start actually..."
Lily mumbled as she watched Ruby take out her Potions textbook. She seems very interested in Potions. I'm more interested about Charms and Defense Against the Dark Arts.. She thought to herself as she took out Hogwarts, A History and started to skim through it. She had already read a good portion of her textbooks over the summer, wanting to be as prepared as she could. She looked up when she heard writing and saw Ruby. Is that a diary? Hm...maybe I should start keeping one too. Having an unbiased thing to write in might be a good idea. She went back to reading until she heard Ruby's voice ask her about the one thing she's been dreading...her Hogwarts house.
"To be honest...I'm not quite sure! My mum was in Gryffindor when she was in school. She thinks I'll be like her but I'm not sure. My grandparents and Aunt think I'll be in Ravenclaw. Part of me agrees. I've always like reading and learning but I want to do more than just study..I want to help do something...I don't know...worth while? My mum is an Auror, she's always been my hero even before I knew about magic."
She trailed off and shrugged as she wondered for the umpteenth time, what house she'd be in. Her mum was a Gryffindor, Nan a Hufflepuff, Grandad and Aunt Clisare both Ravenclaw's.
"I just want to make her proud and do something great."
She shrugged again and changed topics.
