Dexter and Jolly-bean, uh... Virgil thinks to himself. Cool names. Ok, not cool, but they're definitely cute! He's always been quite terrible at naming things — drawings, toys and especially pets. In the precious two hours he spent with his cat before having his whole face bloat, Virgil actually named it 'Little Stray', because, well... It was a stray kitty!

"I didn’t pay much attention to him anyway," says Adlai leaning back on her chair, eyes seemingly lost. "Not even the day my father brought him home either. I’m not exactly sure why."

"Perhaps birds aren't your thing," suggests Virge with a simple shrug. He hasn't had many pets — as in actual pets. Trent says they both share Batsy's — a black dog (yes, a dog) that lives on his aunt's backyard when it thinks no one's looking — ownership, which he doesn't agree on since he barely sees Batsy at all, and, also, he's not very fond of dogs. Other than that, he only had Little Stray and...

Oh.

"I, uh, I have dragons, too," adds Virgil carefully, smiling fondly as he remembers the photos his father sends him with those gigantic fire-breathing reptilians. "They aren't pets! They're more like my brothers or something like that..." He shakes his head, chuckling, also remembering all the different and awfully funny stories Mihyung would tell him. "Father takes care of them. There's Pidge, a Hebridean Black, and Sky, the only Peruvian Vipertooth."

Virgil smiles to himself, as his heart begins to ache in his chest, missing his father dearly. It's been weeks since their last letter, and despite wanting to write him, no words come out. Mihyung's probably enjoying his trip back to England after three years... If he wanted to write to him, it should be something important. Virgil's starting to frown and pout, looking pathetically sad in front of the two first years, so he adds, forcing a happy and excited smile.

"O-Oh! There's a new one, too! A Hungarian Horntail! She's a baby and I named her Peri." He plays with his hair and adds as the two wouldn't understand the meaning of the name. "It's, uh, kind of a short cut for the word 'perigosa'. It means dangerous in Portuguese since her breed is the most dangerous dragons ever... Silly name, I know."

Adlai practically jumped out of her seat at the sound of the word dragons. “You’re telling me that you have seen and interacted with real life dragons, and have even gotten to name one?” She said adding extreme punctuation to every word.

“That’s incredible! Have you been able seen any Antipodean Opaleye or Ukrainian Ironbelly, perhaps even a Swedish Short-Snout?” She asked him, her almond shaped eyes becoming chestnuts. Adlai had read about Dragons before in a book she had found while exploring the school library. She had found them to be very interesting creatures. However, even before she knew that magical creatures were real Adlai had a particular interest in them. Mostly coming from the folktales her parents and grandparents would tell her and her sisters.

One of the first folktale she recalls being told was one that was called “The Crows” which is about how a certain number of crows means something and how these crows affects a man’s life. There was even a song about it that her Grandfather had taught her. Her Grandmother, on her fathers side, had told her this story when her youngest sister, Johana, was being born.

Another folktale, that is her favorite, is one without name. It is about a Knight and his fair maiden, within their village once every few years a selection of five girls are chosen to be a possible bride of a dragon that terrorizes their village. One year the Knight’s maiden is selected by the village elders and is sadly taken away by the dragon. Filled with grief the Knight hunts down the beast to save his love, but when he arrives to the dragons layer his love had already perished. With rage and sorrow the Knight slays the dragon and his village is liberated from their fear but swiftly after the Knight dies of a broken heart.

Adlai is immediately excited by the mention of dragons, and Isaac listens to her spiel before asking his own questions.

“Dragons?” He inquiries, eyebrows arched. “As in legitimate, fire-breathing dragons?” He thought keeping dragons as pets was illegal, because if it wasn’t, he’d had been all over that years ago.

“Well,” Isaac cut off his train of thought, fiddling with the lighter deep in his robe pocket, careful not the accidentally set it off and light himself on fire. That would be a lot of trouble if he were to spontaneously alight in front of two first years. How embarrassing would that be? Not to mention the fact he’d probably be dead (Dhampirs aren’t very fire resistant).

“You said they weren’t pets?” He resumes, taking his hand out of his pocket to toy with his ear lobe. It’s impossible for Isaac to stay still.

“How does that even work? Is your father a dragon tamer or something?”

He’s aware of the jobs that allow contact with dragons, he just never assumed this messy-haired, tired eyed kid would have any sort of relationship with one. Although, his judgment could be off. He’d only just met the boy, and it wasn’t as if he knew him extremely well. He wasn’t sure Adlai did either. He didn’t even know Adlai herself very well, not to mention he barley knew what he got himself into. Part of Isaac thinks he may have made a poor lapse of judgment, but really all he can do is just has to see how everything plays out.

Virgil is taken by surprise by their genuinely interested reactions. He feels himself burn a little more due to the sudden attention, heartbeat accelerating, threatening to leave his chest and start dancing around. Can you stop being ridiculous? He bites towards his own body, playing with his fingers under the table.

"Ah, yes, real dragons." He nods fervently, not wanting them to think of him as a liar or something along those lines. Quite frankly, he never thought his father's involvement with dragons to be anything other than insanely dangerous — Virge could never see himself doing that for a living, even though there are definitely way riskier jobs in the wizarding world.

"Father is a Dragonologist," he explains sweetly, running his fingers through his hair to push it away from his eyes. "He works at the S.R.D, the Sweden Reserve for Dragons. There are still some crazy wizards out there, trying to harm or even kill them, so it's his job to take care of them."

Hopefully, he's making it sound amazing because it is! Dragons are very difficult creatures to deal with, especially the ones who have been rescued as they tend to be more violent and sometimes bloodthirsty, and even though Mihyung's the best with magical creatures, it's impossible for one to leave with no injuries.

Father is a Dragonologist,” Virgil said looking rather proud. Who wouldn’t be it was a spectacular profession! “He works at the S.R.D, the Sweden Reserve for Dragons. There are still some crazy wizards out there, trying to harm or kill them, so it’s his job to take care of them.” he explained gracefully, moving his hair back and revealing a bit more of his dark downturned eyes.

“That’s incredible!” Adlai exclaimed, “I remember when I first met you and you said your father was a Dragonologist I almost didn’t believe you until I started reading about it. Up until that point I didn’t even know Dragons were real anyway.” She went on to explain the utmost importance of the job although it was dangerous.

“I wonder what I’m going to do when I graduate, if I graduate.” Adlai pondered on this thought for a moment. “Perhaps I’ll be an Astronomer if I’m lucky enough, no if I study enough. Then if that doesn’t work out I’ll probably be a Librarian or work in Muggle Relations.” She said leaning back in her chair once again. “What do you think you boys will do?” She asked them. “Once you leave the school for good.”

He nods to most of what Adlai says when she explains the importance of his father's job, smiling a little, chest warm — so glad that she finds it impressive as it doesn't happen often.

Most of his wizard neighbors growing up had parents with really good jobs — one of them worked at the Portuguese Wizarding Government, the other was a journalist at the Daily Prophet, and the oldest's mother worked at MACUSA. And they'd often mock Mihyung's job because, yes, it's way more dangerous than sitting in a cubicle for hours, writing for a paper, but the income wasn't nearly as good.

Virgil didn't mind it, of course, because he thought his father was amazing, but it used to make Mihyung quite embarrassed when the kids would appear at Virgil's place and mention their parents' professions on purpose, with their evil smiles, and it hurt to see his father look down and excuse himself like that.

"What do you think you boys will do?" Leaning on her chair once again, Adlai asks, snapping Virgil out of his sad thoughts. He gives her a lot as she elaborates, as he didn't listen to what she said before. "Once you leave the school for good.”

Oh, Virge thinks, biting his lower lip, tapping his chin. That's hard... There are a lot of promising jobs in the Wizarding World, and he had the luck of living in both Portugal and England, which granted him the chance to choose where he'd like to stay.

"Hm, I haven't given much thought to it, uh..." mumbles Virgil, scratching his cheeks, thinking hard about it. As he still a first year, he shouldn't be thinking about it, so he doesn't feel bad when nothing concrete appears on his mind. "Something that isn't dangerous, I'm sure of that! Maybe at the Ministry of Magic," He shrugs and adds, shaking his head, "Not an Auror! Never an Auror!"

"What do you think you boys will do?"

As Virgil talked, Isaac thought hard about the question. What would he do? People like him can’t find many jobs. Dhampirs, and werewolves were seen as less, and it was almost impossible to find work. They were deemed too dangerous to hold a job.

“To be honest, I’m not sure.” Isaac had stressed enough over it as it is, he really didn’t want to start again now. He had scoured books and talked to wizards and witches with jobs and he still had no idea what he could do.

“Possibly, The Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. In the Beings section. I want to help out other like me, but I don’t even know if I’m allowed a job like that.” He flicks a quick look towards Virgil.

Isaac dragged out the words slowly. “Y’know. Being a Dhampir and all that.”

It’s always so hard to determine a persons reaction. It depends on their blood-status, the way they were raised, even houses sometimes changed their opinions. “Though I wouldn’t mind being an Auror. It would give me something to do with my hands.” He added quickly, eyes glued on Virgil, waiting.

A dhampir, right, his brain registers the words slowly as he feels Isaac's hazel eyes glued to his face. He's never met a vampire or in this case a half-vampire before, so unknowingly analyses the Slytherin's face again — nothing's change, but Virgil feels like he was hit by a realization of some sort. He feels wary like he's walking on thin ice — not because he fears Isaac or anything like that. No, not at all! But because he doesn't want to be rude.

Virgil's a little saddened by the other's explaining, too. His vampire characteristics shouldn't stop him from pursuing whatever trajectory he wanted in life, but, for now, there's nothing they can do about it. Some wizards still live in the Dark Age, still thinking they're superiors to everyone else — it's really pathetic.

"An Auror, uh? You're really brave," he says, not making a big deal out of the other's confession, as he should. There's nothing that different between the two of them, and though some might say that they're better than dhampirs or werewolves, Virgil knows that's not the case. He's sure that Isaac could kick his ass in a duel without even trying that hard. Virge smiles softly towards Isaac, "You gotta show that Dhampirs can kick ass, too." Jokingly, he adds, "Just don't show up in St Mungos, if I end up being a Healer or something, alright?"

Isaac smiles. Good. He was one of the good ones. “Of course,” he jokes back. “I’m not that reckless. And if you do end up a Healer, you better be the best Healer there is.”

“And yeah, I’d love to be an Auror. Magic is such a big part of my life, and I love dueling and defense and offense magic. Just being able to use it for good seems, I don’t know. Better than wasting my life with a job I hate.”

Isaac means what he says. Even if the Death Eaters were disbanded and Voldemort was dead, it wasn’t as if all crime came to a complete standstill. There’s still blood-purists, there’s still people who murder, there’s still an imprint from when Voldemort was alive. Isaac wanted to help get rid of it.

Even if he is a Dhampir, he’ll fight as hard as possible to get into a job he wants. The only reason he’s still uneasy and uncertain about his future is because of the one thing he can’t control, and he hates it. But still, he isn’t going to let it stop him.

“I’m sure whatever we do with our lives in the future will be something fulfilling.” Adlai said leaning forward and resting her chin on the back of her right hand. “But in order to do those things in our lives we have to pass school, so...shall we actually study now?” She asked not meaning to sound rude or pushy.

She still had very little information on what a Dhampire was and thus didn’t mind Isaac’s confession even though she had put it on her list of things to research when she had first meet him a few days ago.
She wondered if she would ever become true friends with the two Slytherin’s, she wondered if they found her annoyance to there day to lives.

After all they didn’t need to understand all of the never ending information she had contained within her mind about NASA projects, the endless possibilities of when galaxies collide, and her void of star names and placements. What they did need was to understand how on earth to pass Transfiguration, how to brew potions that heal magical and non magical wounds, and how to fly on a broomstick if any of them wanted to play Quidditch in the near future.
