The familiar aroma of old books and wood polish stimulated Adeline's senses. The library was a safe place for many students, the young Ravenclaw, of course, was no exception. Many trips to the library were simple distractions, an opportunity to people watch, a quiet moment alone to wander, and browse the vast collection of information filling the shelves. Today, however, Adeline had a precise reason to be here, and her quick pace and confident strides reflected that.

"Let's see..." the girl paused for a moment, fingers skimming each of the books spines, her eyes intently scanning the familiar aisle for her target- Moon Magic- a History in Phases. Addie's first year served to develop many things in her, namely her newfound love for astronomy. Consequently, many of the girl's nights were spent curled up near candlelight, engrossed in any book on the subject that she could get her hands on. Addie had seen many of her peers toting this particular text around the school, but had never managed to check a copy out for herself; so whenever she overheard a classmate mentioning dropping her copy by the Library after breakfast, the book savvy Ravenclaw knew now was her time to pounce.

The blue-eyed girl let out a tiny gasp, quickly cupping her hand over her mouth, silencing herself. "it's actually there!" she smiled happily, side stepping towards the book, her eyes never leaving her objective. Her tunnel vision would backfire, however. In her concentrated craze, she had overlooked another student who just so happened to be in the library today for the exact same reason. The girl crashed into her classmate, quickly realizing her mistake.

With a thud, Adeline fell to the floor, clumsily bumping a shelf along the way. Books rained down on the girl, as a wave of embarrassment flooded over her, causing her cheeks to burn bright red. Nervously, the girl straightened out her robes before meeting the eyes of her classmate, a simple "oops?" being all she could muster.

It should come as no surprise that when Rafal finds himself at a loss as to what to do with his spare time at any point, his go-to answer is almost always, 'the library'. Back at home, money was always tight and between bills, food, and the like, the thought of pouring difficult-to-come-by coins into something as fatuous as extra pages was laughable. But here? The Hogwarts library boasted a seemingly endless collection of books, all for him.

Talks had been circulating around the castle of a particular volume, detailing Astronomy knowledge. And of course, Rafal had to read it himself. So here he was, having scrambled down here the moments classes ended for the day, and determined not to leave without the desired tome in his hands.

Luck was on the Slytherin's side that day, for it had scarce been five minutes since he started searching, before he spotted it. The words on the spine jumped out at him so that Rafal momentarily lost sight of his surroundings, and he had just begun to reach for the volume when - BAM!

Something - or someone - knocked into Rafal from the side, and he stumbled, arms shooting out to grab onto the shelf in front of him. Steadying himself, he looked over to where the attack had come from. Well. It seemed that his assailant had not been so lucky.

Books were scattered in a jumbled pile all around a dark-haired girl, who was settled smack in the middle of the mess. Her cheeks were bright red with embarrassment, and she met Rafal's eyes awkwardly. "Oops?"

She was not the most literate person, it appeared. Rafal sighed before moving closer to the disarray. "Hey, are you all right?" His tone was a mix of worry and mild annoyance. Funny since she was the one who had bumped into him, but Rafal was nice. He leaned down slightly and held out a hand in assistance. "Come on, get up. We can clean this up together."

Unfortunately for the kind-eyed Slytherin, Adeline was not in the mood for chatting, or for receiving help. Her embarrassment quickly morphed into frustration as she realized that that the boy she had bumped into was simply an obstacle. As he asked if she was alright, a rushed, absent-minded "I'm fine, I'm fine..." Practically leapt from the girl's lips. Her eyes were set on the prize... that was now buried somewhere beneath the pile of text covering Addie's lower half. The young Ravenclaw gulped, reaching for the boys hand, her eyes never leaving the books surrounding her.

"Come on, get up. We can clean this up together." He beckoned. Addie took the offer, grasping his out stretched hand. Once she was on her feet, she finally got a proper look at the boy. He was tall, even taller than her, his curly blonde hair adding a couple extra inches to his already notable stature. He appeared a bit softer than the other Slytherin students she had come to know; under different circumstances she may have even wanted to be his friend.

"That sounds great and all. If you weren't after my book, I might actually take you up on that." She winced at her rudeness. Nevertheless, she began rummaging through the heap, ignoring the boy as best as she could. That may have worked. If the boy she would soon know as Rafal hadn't been standing on THE book, of course.

Adeline's eyes widened. Maybe her attitude had been a bit inappropriate after all. She should have known better than to treat her peer with such disregard, and as far as she was concerned, this was her punishment for being so unpleasant. Her eyes met his once more as she swallowed her pride. "I know I haven't given you much of a reason to be nice to me, but if you could keep it up for just a moment longer I would greatly appreciate it." She glanced back towards the floor. "Do you think you could move a bit so I could get my book, Mister...?" She paused, quickly realizing she hadn't caught his name.

This was an interesting development. The girl had begrudgingly accepted his hand, yet seemed uninterested by the accompanying offer of help. Her grating words seemed unnecessarily hostile, and Rafal could not decide whether to be offended or amused by the way she immediately dove back into the mess on the floor, digging through the heap for 'her book', apparently.

The bellicose attitude certainly fit her image. Cutting features, dark bedraggled hair. And when she looked up at him, he was struck by how her eyes were overtly smoky and sharply intense. Rafal normally tried not to form judgement about something as insubstantial as appearance, but he felt a little better in this case, considering how she had already proved to be rather unpleasant. The girl seriously need to rake a comb through that tangle every once in a while, and perhaps go a little easy on the eye-shadow.

All this ran through Rafal's mind in a second. However, it was previously established that Rafal was nice, and so he kept his mouth shut about these opinions. Instead, the Slytherin sighed and moved off the book trapped under his foot, only to quickly snatch it up himself. Well. He could have a little fun.

"Rafal," he offered, holding the book up for her to see. "And I think you’ll forgive me if I’m not exactly craving for your appreciation at the moment, Miss…?" He casually flipped through the pages of the tome. "It just so happens that I’m finding myself in need of this particular volume as well, and - oh gosh, I have it right now! - so uh -" he looked up. "Make me an offer."

"Addie." she practically spat as the boy asked for her name. The heat had returned to Addie's face as Rafal playfully teased her, his nonchalant energy toward the matter only pissing her off further. She tugged at her robes in an attempt to straighten herself out as she watched the boy fiddle with her book. "Make me an offer." he challenged, looking from the book back to Adeline, who treated him with a master-class glare.

The little snake should be grateful I don't feel like telling the librarian he's pushed me... Adeline thought bitterly, shocking even herself at just how truly worked up she had become over something as simple as a book. In this moment, it was bigger than just that. A brief moment of shame came and went before she could even process it, the emotion quickly being replaced by familiar annoyance once more.

Adeline painted a forced smile onto her face. "Well..." she began, relaxing her posture, sarcastically raising her index finger to her temple as if she were thinking. "I've got a good hand full of stones, buttons, and stray knuts hanging out in the bottom of my satchel..." she smirked, genuinely this time. "Or maybe I could show you that you're more than likely underestimating me, and just snatch it right out of your hand." She bluffed, fully aware of her prominent clumsiness, and frankly, lack of courage. As much as she would hate to admit, the girl was much more bark than bite. Her facade began to crack at the thought of him actually taking her up on the offer; her snarky glare began to gradually deflate.

Rafal didn’t generally make it a regular affair to torment his peers, but he was currently in a mood and the opportunity was simply too perfect to pass up. "Addie," he echoed, then shot the girl a smirk. "It’s a cute name. Too it doesn’t fit its owner very well."

The glare she fixed him with could have bore through iron. Perhaps Rafal ought to have backed down at this point, rescinded and saved himself what would likely be a lot of trouble down the road. That would have been the smart thing to do, and Rafal liked to think he waasmart. But there was also a reason the first year was a snake, and not a Ravenclaw. He loved the rush.

Ah. So she was funny. "As tempting as that sounds, I’m afraid I’m just drowning in buttons at the moment," he quipped, and opened his mouth to spew out another goading one-liner. Suddenly, he stopped, cut short by what the girl said next.

Raising an eyebrow sceptically, Rafal titled his head while looking at Addie intently. "Really?" That was an interesting development. He actually wouldn’t mind seeing where it went. While he was hardly going to attack Addie in any way, would she? It felt like most students at Hogwarts were depressingly dull, all blurring together into a generic mass of figures. Meeting someone with an actual personality was a rarity, and Rafal intended to hold on to it as long as he could.

Besides, it would be a miracle if the girl actually reached him without tripping over the thousands of books sprawled about the wooden floor. The Slytherin must have forgotten his brain back at the dormitory today, for against his better judgement, Rafal took a step back and held the book up tauntingly. He met Addie's gaze with a challenging air. "You’re right. Maybe I underestimate you. So - " He gripped the spine tighter. "Be my guest."

He couldn’t resist one more crack, however. "Be careful not to run into it!"

Absolutely agitating he was. Addie knew deep down that the boy was only joking, but the devious glint in his eye was unmistakable. What IS it with these damn Slytherin? she asked herself. The girl's ego was fighting for dominance, and her opponent was not at all keen on granting it. His final quip about "running into" the book sent the poor girl right over the edge.

Addie lunged forward, eyes set intently on the book. To even her surprise, she managed to grab it. If only it were so simple. It was easy to recognize that Adeline's lanky build sat on the weaker side, unlike the Devereux boy. She grimaced, gripping the opposite side of the oh-so precious text, leveraging her weight against Rafal. She should have let go when her fingers slipped from the cover, to the pages. If only arrogance and stubborn will weren't so prominent in the young Ravenclaw.

The sound was awful. A loud POP followed by a succession of rips and tears rang out through the Library, causing Adeline to wince. The pages quickly gave way, causing the stubborn child to stumble backwards into the pile of books once more. She managed to stay on her feet this time, but practically buckled at the knees when she realized what was in her hand. Pages 13 through 49 of the beloved Moon Magic- a History in Phases. She had really done it this time.

Her eyes met his once more, different this time. She looked pale, distant, and more than anything else- guilty.

I am so so so sorry for the long wait on this one!! If you want any of this changed owl me! I am going to find someone to give Addie detention for this (She is going to take the full blame as 1. it is her fault, and 2. I think it would be a good jumping off point for building the friendship!)
lmk what ya think!
