The day could've very well been like any other, except for the fact it had been consumed by boredom. Had Gem been back in Sheffield, there would've been a million things to do, ride a bike, find friends around in his neighborhood, walk down to a music store and not worry about getting a sunburn because hell would freeze over before the sun shone down on a place like that. He'd made a lot of friends, or, more than he was used to. He was grateful for that, having the ability to connect with so many people, but just because there were a lot, didn't mean they had the same amount of time for him.

He'd gone along and stolen some of Charlotte's matches, while they hung out in the common room. She'd left them on the couch, and even if he told himself he'd give them back as soon as possible, he found himself here, burning pieces of parchment he'd scribbled on, or found all over the floor. He'd gotten sick of shooting weightless spells into the lake, and so he decided to pile up the papers to burn them up. However, he decided he'd wait best for last, and instead began to strike them across the side and throw them on the shore or in the water. It was sort of mesmerizing, how the small sizzle would sound and then stop.

He spaced out at that point, his brain filled up with nothing. He wondered if anyone would find him here, all huddled up by the great lake, tossing lit matches into some of the worst smelling water anyone could imagine. Still, he wasn't sure if he wanted to be found quite yet. On one hand, it would distract him from being so bored, but it might also create some trouble if said person was a professor or prefect. He sniffed, striking another match, holding it up to his face - not too close, he didn't want to burn himself - and licked his pointer and thumb, and pinched it out. He felt like he could never win in a situation like this.

What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though.

[quote]A day like this, although Marla knew it was the present, was one that she'd forget. Every last second of this day was almost too ordinary, nauseatingly so. Scotland was normally compact with stormy clouds in the sky as if it were threatening the ground with rain at any second. She frowned, shoving her foot into a muddy patch of grass. Was a little sunshine too much to ask for?

She trudged towards the murky water, sitting down as close as she could to the lake. Slowly inching her feet towards the body of water, she was silently begging for the giant squid to put her out of her misery. As brutal of a death this was, with the water being a gross black-ish color, so opaque you couldn't even see a few centimeters down, and some weird gray swirly substance around the surface... Marla wouldn't touch a drop of that water with a ten-foot pole. If the squid happened to be feeling angry today, she was hoping that he would show at least a sliver of mercy for the small Gryffindor.

Laying her back down on the grass, she completely forgot that it was damp from previous days of constant rain. She groaned, feeling her robes slowly getting colder as the rain seeped through the fabric of her clothing. At this point, Marla wasn't even going to bother to get up. It was just water, and even with the brutal wind, and now the wet clothing, she was adjusted to the unfortunately freezing Scotland weather. That didn't mean that this didn't completely suck. At least it couldn't get any worse...

Plop, plop, plop.

A strange sound filled the Gryffindor's ears, causing her to jump up instinctively, grabbing ahold of her wand. With the sound sourcing from the left, her eyes darted in that direction, and immediately felt relief. It was just some... Very pale, young-looking boy. Was it a boy? No matter, at least it wasn't a demon or something. But before she turnt away to resume moping about nothing in particular, she noticed matches in the boy's hands that he was using to.. Light up paper and throw into the water. What in good grief? Were first years that depressed? Not surprising, but still kind of weird. Being a prefect, she didn't want to get shit from any other prefects or even professors for not doing anything, so with a defeated and equally vexed sigh, she got up out of her sad patch of grass and snuck up behind the boy.

She put her mouth close to his ear, anticipating the look on his face when she spoke. Yes, it was slightly sinister, but she couldn't resist! He looked so helpless. "What in tha feck are yah doin'? Intentionally speaking slightly too loud with her hips at her side, holding back a smug smirk, she waited for the tired seeming student's response, a mischievous glint in her eyes. It wouldn't hurt to have a little fun with this, right?

"HOLEH SHIT WOT THE FOOK-" Gem shrieked, launching himself to the side, away from whatever the hell had just whispered right into his ear. He had a pathetic defensive stance, his shoulders broadening, away from his side - kind of like t-posing, except his arms bent at the elbows. His eyes were all big and scared, his heart was pounding against his ribcage, what the hell was tha-

Oh.

It was another student. He visibly relaxed, albeit had his guard up in the unlikely case it wasn't actually a student, or like... a prefect? Aw, she was a prefect, wasn't she? She had the slim, professional, I Can Do No Wrong As I Am The Law posture. He was so screwed. In a meager attempt to avoid getting in trouble, he slid the box of matches into his robes, fumbling around with his fingers, all sheepish-like.

"Uh- joost, spendin' some alone time. Wiv meself. Nothin' happening here, ya know us first years, all... depressed, drownin' our failed poetry... and stuff..." He tried to smile, but it was more like a grimace, his straight teeth all lined up without the ends of his lips turning upwards. He looked like an idiot. "Ehm, nothin' happenin'. Might wanna go before I throw meself in the lake. That's a joke, by e' way. Not a threat, please don' tell my head of the house I wanna throw meself in the lake, I'd never do that, that's so gross-" He figured it would be very smart to stop talking right around now, so he clamped his jaw shut and waited to get dragged off to detention. Today was not going spectacularly.

[quote]This was almost too good. The poor, skinny, little pale thing jumped up so far and fearfully he reminded her of an albino kangaroo. A grin made its way on her lips as she snorted with laughter, but in a poor attempt to hide it, she hacked a few times into her elbow. After all, it was probably against the “prefect honor” to laugh at another’s misfortune. Was there even a prefect honor? Never mind that, she would simply enjoy herself in the moment that had arisen.

“If I were yeh, I’d watch ya language. Ya don’t know who could’a walked up t’ you, ya know?? I coulda been the headmaster and your education woulda been ruined because of that shit mouth’a yours– fuck–,” She murmured the last swear under her mouth realizing the irony in her statement but with the impulsivity of it, she had no doubt in her mind that the presumably anemic Ravenclaw had heard her. After all, Marla Quinlan, if she were anything, was a loudmouth. Gryffindors had the tendency to be loud after all. She was no exception.

The devilish smirk on her face did not falter whatsoever, in fact, watching the boy swiftly hide his matches made it grow even wider. He had some nerve, this one. However, there was no complaining. Maybe today would be quite interesting after all. The boy looked very plain, most Ravenclaws did have a pale complexion with cold eyes and dark hair, so he most likely wouldn’t stick out in a crowd to her… But god, was he the most awkward little thing she had ever met…

“Is tha’ right, now?” She responded to his poor excuses in a condescending tone. “And why the hell’re you smilin' like that? Ya look like Ted Bundy reincarnated, christ,” Marla narrowed her eyes, scrunching up her nose to see him better. Thinking about her past, there really wasn’t anything that topped this in terms of cringe-worthiness. Every five seconds she felt her stomach drop in second-hand embarrassment for the poor boy.

“Please don’t off yah self, I don’t feel like dealin’ wit that t’day,” Finishing off her sentence with a tired sigh, she stepped closer to the student, glancing at a crease in his robes. “So as I was sayin’ before, I know ya were doin something with paper, or whatever, so I’d just come clean,” She pointed to a gray substance floating in the lake that she assumed was ashes. Then again, it could have just been some sort of moss and the overcast lighting made it seem a muted color, but at least it would help this interference move along faster. Hopefully he wouldn’t be a pain in the ass, she didn’t feel like spending her hours giving out another detention, especially with not knowing what the hell she was doing.
