Slytherin
First Year
Physical Description
Age: 11
Height: 4'7 (Tall for 11)
Species: Human
Patronous:N/A
Madeline Doe is a tall, lithe girl with a pale complexion. Her face is slim but soft. She has very long and straight hair, as black as ink. Usually half-up in a ponytail. Madeline’s eyes match her hair, with dark chocolate hues, heavy lids, and thick eyelashes. She has an air of quiet self-confidence, seriousness, a bit of a know-it-all, and might seem a bit snobby to the more casual flock in Hogwarts. She didn’t grow up with other kids besides her sister, so her social skills still need work. Taught to have good posture, speak politely, and win the fight no matter what you need to do, Madeline is prepared to fight dirty to live a successful life after school but she feels as though she’s missing something.
Wand
27.7 Centimeters, Cherry wood, Pheonix feather. Slightly Bendy. Very powerful though also difficult to use. This wand is exceptionally selective of the wizard it chooses.
Personality
Madeline is a serious girl with an ambitious drive for a ceiling she hasn't found yet. She had grown a bit reserved since her sister's passing. She's thirsty for information, curious, graceful, a bit of a know-it-all, cautious, polite, unsure of how to act casually with others anymore. She once had a fiery temper and showed emotion openly with a fierce protectiveness of her sister. It may be buried deep, but that's also in her soul somewhere. For now, she leads a little too strongly with her head and prejudices, than her heart. She envies people like her sister, who create stories, follow their heart, and who do what they love without considering social norms. She has a prejudice against anyone not pure-blooded, but once in a while, that question nags at her if that's her real opinion or not.
History Pre-Hogwarts
On December 28th, deep in Northern Quebec an infamous Pure-Blood family is awaiting the birth of twins. A roaring snowstorm whipped an ancient and sprawling castle, tucked into the mountains and snowy craigs. Inside the secluded castle was surprisingly warm, growing slowly cooler as the storm went on late into the night. Finally, Madeline and her twin sister Clementine, were born. Her mother was disappointed to have twin girls, hoping to continue the antique tradition of a male heir. Their father was quietly satisfied regardless, doting on them while they were babies but becoming a strict parent as the twins got older. A believer, as their mother does, of tough love.
Madeline and her sister were cared for by a nanny, an older squib woman, "-who is lucky to have a magical roof over her head!" as Madeline's mother would mutter anytime she found smudge of dust or item out of place. Their nanny taught the girls manners, how to hold themselves, and about blood status. Mudbloods and blood traitors were examples of the lowest of low. Aside from muggles themselves, of course. Madeline and her sister laughed at the idea that the ancient art of fencing, what silverware placement was correct, and balancing books on their head would ever be useful. Madeline first manifested her magic when she accidentally pulled chairs out from under her parents at dinner, when throwing a tantrum about having to go to the boring family gathering for the holidays. The young sisters used to try and make buds blossom in the back garden or make paper toys fly to each other, sometimes with success. Often scolded for trying to use wandless magic outside of the legal age.
Clementine was always more thoughtful and adventurous than Madeline. She would often be the one to come up with a new game to play, a new story to take part in, or a new trouble to be had. They didn’t have any other children to play with, so Madeline was never overly socialized. Clem was the family favorite, so Madeline kept to herself when Clementine was getting special teachings. She didn’t mind though. Less time in the spotlight, meant more freedom when she was an adult. But as they got older, Clem eventually broke down, still so young at 7, she was overwhelmed at the responsibility on her shoulders, and felt trapped. So Madeline stepped forward and told her parents she would take on the family name. She would prove herself to be strong enough so Clem could be free. Madeline didn’t know the lengths of her future responsibilities, but she would do anything for Clem. Little did she know that her future, according to her parents, is set on deciding which muggle and blood traitorous families would go missing. Mastering trade deals and routes for highly magical, dark, and illegal artefacts. And making sure their name stood strong with the other Pure-Blood families.
Then one chilly autumn day, when they both turned 8, they snuck out to the nearest muggle town to explore. It was their last chance to really be kids before homeschooling became serious so they were prepared to excel in their first year in a proper school. They spoke to muggle adults, played pranks on the neighborhood, and played with muggle children. Who Madeline realized really... weren't that different than them? The nanny had seen them sneak out, and sent an owl to their father. By the time he had received the owl and apparated, he could only find Madeline. During their chaotic troublemaking, they had been separated. She misses her best friend and sister. A funeral was held after a year of searching alongside muggle authorities, where voices rose and fists went flying. Only broken up by the flickering light through the window of hundreds of muggles paying their respects out front. Their secluded lives were found, the families were disgusted at spilled pure blood, blame was thrown everywhere.
Soon after that night, the Doe family packed up without warning on the next boat over the sea. Where they finally settled in Ireland after "convincing" muggles to leave their large, rural, homestead. It would take a while to build connections again, which spread her parents too thin to homeschool Madeline. Neither of them trusted the servants to teach Maddie. So when she turned 11, an owl flew in and gracefully dropped a letter on the table at breakfast. Her mother immediately snatched it before Madeline could finish reading her name in loopy green ink, and cut it open to read it aloud. They had been expecting this letter. Her mother and father conversed for a while, with her mother mostly doing the talking, about what to do. They had started making roots in the ministry and with other local families. Should they opt to send her out-of-country to Durmstrang? No, they've already aroused suspicion with the dark arts, they couldn't risk it. Her parents begrudgingly agreed to send her to Hogwarts. Preferably to make her own connections with pure-bloods and get good grades. Madeline’s heart fluttered for the first time in years since moving here. New things to learn? New people her age? Freedom from her parents? She agreed, sliding her hands under her thighs to hide them as they trembled with excitement and fear.
Ever since her sister was lost, Madeline is questioning everything she was taught by her parents. Were their views really her own too? Were blood traitors and mudbloods really so vile? Was Hogwarts as regal and strict as her parents? What would she learn that her parents won't teach her? Terrified but with a stoic face, Madeline is prepared for her first year at Hogwarts, and is wondering what house she’ll end up in… and how her parents will react.
Family
ReducioMadeline’s Mother: Bethany is a short, plump lady, with thin lips and large judgemental blue eyes. Charming and sociable with people she deems worth her time, she is the definition of two-faced. Her thin blonde hair usually pulled tightly into an elaborate updo. She was around more often than their father and was always rambling. There was seldom a quiet moment when Bethany was around. “Sit straight, elbows off the table, speak when spoken to!” She would often spring random questions on her daughters, to see if they were studying properly. Since Clem's death, she is a bit colder to Madeline, saying she was careless not to keep a closer eye on her, but hasn't outright blamed anyone. Currently works at home, doing bookkeeping for magical shops in London.
Madeline’s father: Theodore is a burly tall man with thick dark hair and eyes. He was serious and often the dark figure by the fireplace in the evenings. Brooding over the muggle infestation in the towns and cities, worrying that the blood traitors are ruining his daughter’s chances to find a worthy partner. Madeline and her sister would peek through the drawing-room door and see their parents in deep conversation with close wizarding families on how to thin the herd of dirty blood. He is very kind to Madeline since Clem's funeral and isolates himself from the family often. Has become a bit overprotective of Maddie as well. Currently works in the ministry.
Clementine:Madeline's sister. Deceased. Got separated from Madeline during their trip to a muggle town when they turned 8 and was missing for a year before a funeral was held. Was close to everyone in the family to some extent, and closest to Maddie.
Ex-Nanny: Ahmala’s the squib that was taken in by the Doe family. Or at least, that’s what Madeline’s parents said. Ahmala bears a striking similarity to Theodore, despite being much older. She’s a stern, trembling old woman had crooked glasses that made her heavily lined eyes smaller, and had thick black hair pulled taut. She speaks with a croaky voice and refused to be pitied. Discipline was often at her hands, writing lines, and doing chores meant for the servants. Currently works as Head Servant, and occasionally makes remarks that Madeline is what ruined Clementine and that she was careless, which always upsets Theodore if he hears it.
