Having consumed every flavour of cookie, Leah looked up and again observed the swirling crowds. Where was Xailah, the older student from earlier, now? Ah, yes - there, still with those other students. One of them was moving away, and another seemed to be getting very annoyed. It didn't look like a pleasant conversation.

The crowds shifted again and, just as Leah was about to get up and see if she could help break up whatever confrontation was ooccurring, Xailah was gone.

"Thank Merlin," she said. "I'm rubbish at breaking up fights."

She stood up anyway, this time to pick up a small plate if who knows what and taste it. While it may have been a little savoury for her taste, she still managed to finish the snack in a few seconds.

After this, she decided to do a little people watching and look for someone else to talk to. There seemed to be many who hadn't followed the dress code very strictly... or at all.

There was the boy in the pumpkin dress again; many people were looking over at him as they walked in, and a few stopped to talk and comment. She felt a little bad for him, and for staring when she entered.

Then there was the older girl in pyjamas she had talked to before, who was probably not actually trying to dress as Sleeping Beauty. A glance at her strange mask helped Leah finally piece together what should have been obvious from the start.

Finally, a boy who had walked in just moments ago. He was wearing a hoodie and jeans, yet looked anything but comfortable. Then again, the ball was a little more formal than what he must have expected.

And then there was herself. She wasn't exactly self conscious, but her dress was a little simpler than the others'.

Never mind that, she thought. She needed another one of those miniature snacks.

"Thanks." Astrid smiled. She made a quick mime of taking notes, nodding as Karilyna talked about the older Thunderbirds. Hearing Phyllis's comments and questions, she replied, "I mean, sorta? As un-costume as a costume could get I suppose. The hood's there to reference Little Red Riding Hood. But, it was sort of a side note, so... A Phoenix would've been pretty. I wonder if there are any spells that could help with making something like that." She shrugged, smiling.

She nodded along as Phyllis suggested a mini-plan.

"Food almost always sounds good to me." Astrid laughed. Her tastes had never been 'refined', so most foods tasted fine to her. An odd little quirk, but it wasn't that noticeable, so Astrid didn't mind. Trying to make sure that the others were following, she went over to the buffet of food, finding herself a glass of the punch, as well as some food. While the others found what they wanted, Astrid tried to find a table that they could all sit at.

She quickly apologized to a painting as she took the table and placed her food, waiting for the others to join her. Naturally, she assumed they would come, but if they didn't, she would try to find them again in the crowd.

"I personally don't really know the art," she tried to mime pranking in some sort of way, causing her to blush at her awkwardness. Hoping she got the point across, she continued, "But I hope you have some ideas? Also, what if you wanted to prank a bunch of older siblings?" If she learned, her brothers would never know what got them. After all, they weren't likely to suspect her.

She returned back to the conversation at hand.

"I mean- sorta.. With my mum being a Veela n all, I kinda had a general understanding of magic as a child. Oh, something cool about me is that I'm technically American, but was raised in England!" Brielle had replied to his question, a smile worn across her face. The American thing was true, and if she were being completely honest- practically nobody knew it about her. Not even Grayson.

Speak of the devil, he had just appeared in front of her group, his face full of worry. "Yo! Gray whatcha-" She was then cut off by a question of more important matter. So he really did get Mags to go with him! She had been on the fence before, only because he had been acting a little suspicious, though it made her smile at the thought he really got a date with her.

"Mm, yeah. She's over there with Pierre and them." Brielle replied, pointing to the two jokers in the middle of the Ballroom. As he nodded and gave her a quick thanks, she giggled and turned back to her new acquaintances. In the few seconds she had looked away, she noticed a girl before them, causing Brielle's happy demeanor to falter. Catriona.. the girl Gem told her not to worry about. Even there was no reason to feel uncomfortable, she still shifted awkwardly, her hand slipping into Gem's. Maybe it was a security thing, whatever it was, she held onto Gem a little tighter than before, hoping his touch would bring her back to reality.

Thankfully, it did, and her thoughts relaxed. As the girl complimented them, she smiled a real smile, a genuine one, curtsying playfully as she did so. Catriona had also looked stunning, naturally beautiful, even. Her makeup was minimal, though perfect at the same time. Her eyelashes were at a perfect length, and her cheeks were a rosy blush sort of color. It caused Brielle to wonder if she should have layed back herself, though the thought didn't register long.

As if there couldn't be anymore people, a girl ran up to them, wrapping her arms around James. He seemed to be startled at first, though relaxed once he came to realization of who had just embraced him. As they ran away to the dance floor, Brielle glanced up at Gem once more, unsure of how to ask him. She nudged him a small bit, and then beckoned to the dance floor.

"Wanna uhm- dance?" She murmured, hoping he didn't refuse.

Wow! The pretty girl with blonde hair had a pretty name! "Rhea"! When Rhea talked about not recognizing anyone, Millie agreed. She obviously recognized the girls who came to the sleepover the night before, but they had all shown off their dresses and masks, so it wasn't hard to tell who they were.

And she recognized Maggie and Charlotte, of course, since they came together, but nobody really else. And of course she agreed with Rhea about how chaotic these balls became. Just the thought of something bad happening was quite scary to her. The rumors from older students about previous parties were terrifying. If someone set this party on fire, there was a chance the Ilvermorny students wouldn't want to come back. She hadn't even met Amaya yet!

"Oh! Yeah, I'm a second year, in Gryffindor, though." She broke from her thoughts and smiled again. "And my grandma used to own this dress, my mom just sent it in for me to wear, with the mask."

Her grandma... Just the thought of trying to delve into what her grandma owned, and was hiding from the family, would give Millie a headache. Maybe if her grandmother hadn't hidden everything from her, and left a few items in the girls possessions, she would be more happy about wearing a dress.

Serenity continued walking around the ball, seeing if she could recognize anyone, from her school, or from Hogwarts. But sadly, with all of the masks, she couldn't even recognize herself, or people she did know. She continued wandering around, before taking a breath and walking over to the food.

She grabbed a pastry and began eating it, her eyes closing and opening slowly, as she tried to calm herself. And then she thought of just... skipping the ball, and heading out somewhere to chill out and take a breather, where the room wasn't filled with people dressed up in masks.

Finishing her pastry, Serenity began walking out of the room, but before she got within five feet of the table she was at, she accidently bumped into a girl. Of course the girl was wearing a mask, but Serenity didn't think she had ever seen her before that. The girl was short, so it was pretty obvious to assume that she was younger than Serenity.

"Oh! Sorry, kid, didn't mean to bump into ya," She said, smiling kindly to the girl.

@Brielle Gray

By the time James and Charlotte had skidded off, Gem was on his second serving of punch. He'd noticed Brielle's hand slipping into his, which he secured by threading their fingers together. It was only now that he was beginning to realize how different everyone's styles were, how extravagant but modern Brielle's was, how classy and neat Catriona's was - it was strange. When he quieted down, he really got around to doing a whole lot of staring.

He was plucked from his thoughts when Brielle's voice was spoken softly into his ear, turning his head slowly as to not show her that he was startled. He had no reason to be; her voice was soft as a dove's feathers.

"Mm! Yeh, let me joost-" He pulled the cup up to his lips, chugging it down - ugh, his grandmother's gingerbread tea - setting the empty cup down on the counter. "Right! Let's go." He pulled her along, right up until they got to the dance floor - it was a good spot too, not too many people, but not too little to feel like you were being watched. He remembered how to dance, only because he'd watch old films with his grandmother shortly before she passed, always told him how to handle a woman proper. He straightened his back out, settling one hand on her hip, the other remaining connected to hers. He was so much better at swing dancing.

"You know how ta ballroom dance, right?" He murmured, already sort of starting before she answered. One two three, step, one two three step, one to three step, one two three step... God, he really hoped they'd start playing some rock n' roll, he'd die if there was a second more of classical happening.

"Ya look stunnin' tonight," His voice was still soft, his head leaned in closely to hers, "I know I said it before, but I really mean it... you're e' prettiest bird I've ever seen, the most show-stoppin' one." Gem's eyes were all nice and tender, his smile reflecting the genuineness of his statement. He wasn't lying, and that was the best part, to him - it was that he meant it.

Chris nodded slowly to the girl in front of her, she was right about the music, it sounded strange for a ball like this and unnaturally deafening to his ears. He could barely hear the person in front of him let alone people around him, hopefully they'll turn it down a notch as the night went on “Forgive me, I see the person I came here to meet. I see you are going to be in more than capable company.” said the girl respectfully as she made her leave, grabbing a fresh cup of juice before nodding to them farewell. The boy replied with a nod of his own, watching her disappear into the crowd before him.

His gaze went back to the mysterious girl beside him, whose identity was yet to be known "Thank you. I got a little nervous at first I went a little too all out, but I think I'm safe this time about." said the girl in response to his comments. Chris felt like she was worrying about what other people instead of what was best for her, either way, he was certain both parties were impressed by the outcome "I'm pretty sure anyone would agree with me that the dress looks great, you have my word on that" smiled the Slytherin in support, his light blue eyes gazing back at the familiar pale stare "Thankfully I think the school took the measures to keep that from happening again. The last party was just short of a nightmare, I think.". Chris was kind of happy that he didn't attend the last ball, everything about it sounded like hell had been let loose "Luckily for me, I didn't attend that evening. To be honest, my reason for not going slipped my mind..." he almost said to himself, it was probably because he didn't like the idea of dancing at the time or something else more embarrassing.

Chris looked down to his cup and noticed he had finally finished, he slowly turned towards the table and kept his vision on the girl, trying not to be disrespectful as she talked "I'm almost disappointed they don't have the cupcakes from the last party though. Granted, I didn't touch them because I wasn't about to regret my life over a gross cupcake, but it was funny watching the other poor souls who got bad ones." she chuckled afterwards, almost causing Chris to spill his drink as he chuckled away at the joke. He turned back to her with a full cup of juice and a smile on his face, a hand of his readjusting the mask he was wearing "Well, I doubt the person who made them will be making another cupcake again" he grinned afterwards, a sip of his cold drink soon following. Their was something Chris needed to ask, a question which he had been saving since the first time they met at the ball "By the way, you look awfully familiar. I think... I think you're the girl I met at the great lake not so long ago" he asked curiously, hoping it wasn't the completely wrong person.

The part he was most interested about was the exchange students, he was interested in the Americans that he come to the school. Prior to this, Reid was highly unaware or skeptical of the existence of other schools. But something in him felt hopeful to see that Hogwarts was hosting students from other places, meaning he could meet people in different places, and in turn learn more about said place. That was a lot of places to be, but he intended on travelling the world one day and America was one of those places.

England was always good to him, he grew up there, but it felt like a death trap that was going to keep him. He had plans, but he didn’t know what they were, he didn’t know where he’d be in the next few years. But luckily, he knew where he was now, surrounded with decent strangers and a few good friends at his side. He was appreciative of some of them, but never was he ever vocal about it. In all fairness, it wasn’t going to happen now, but one day he’ll slip it in.

"Thanks! You look great too!" He beamed at the compliment and gave a jokingly fake bow at Adam’s mention of his shoes. Reid slightly wiggled them as Eris flashed her heels gilded in silver, a classy couple he’d have to admit. “I’ve got your back, you lot, no worries. This ball is going to go smoothly even if I have to drag a body or two out.” he jested. It was the truth though, he wouldn’t hesitate on the nearest Erin Ryan if he needed to. The snake herself, was nowhere to be seen and he hoped it would stay that way since both of them seem to never get along.  "Reid, is it?" He had a slightly harder time trying to process who the girl that Eris and Adam were talking to, but the voice finally dawned on him.

“The one and only. Don’t kill me on this one, but ... Dorothy? The mask mask throws me off, but it’s nice, it looks good on you.” At the mention of Verla by the two, he let a rough laugh tumble from his lips as if he felt some second hand embarrassment at the weird Hufflepuff. He had heard a lot about Verla, nothing ever good, but the rumor mill always spitballed tidbits at him. But at his age, he never really stuck onto wanting to gossip. He was too chaotic to remember who was dating who or who hated who, he was fixated on Quidditch in all fairness. “I think the main goal for the night to have a pleasant ball without anyone getting caught on fire.”

"The goal of the night is definitely to have fun, right? I mean, we have to be careful of course... I don't know. I think it'd be nice to forget about all the mortal peril stuff and just have fun for once." Both of them were right, tonight should just be about them, it should just be about whatever was left of their year before the coming holidays. Though people seem to come back with extra baggage and not the physical kind. “I don’t know how we’re going to dance with the heavy metal that’s playing.” Reid almost looked pained behind the dark mask, grimacing at a note that he heard as the band screamed into the microphone.

He looked at the stage and watched the band incoherently shout and slam their guitar. For a brief moment, he saw Marissa, whom he gave a slight nod to just as a friendly greeting. But their last interaction was her screaming at him and throwing something at him, he didn't know what to think of the girl. Turning on his heels, he looked back at the others.

“I feel like they just got louder or I’m going a little deaf in my right ear!” he shouted over a part of the song. Reid covered up one side of his ear so that he could actually catch what the others were saying. Did the Americans pick this? Maybe they had bad taste in music. What if this was one of their bands? He liked rock, but he wasn’t so exposed to heavy metal and certainly not wizarding heavy metal bands.

How would anyone slow dance to that? “I mean, I guess they’re okay! Not my first choice in … a dance.” The upside? Music. Downside? Not exactly one where he would take a girl to dance with. Sure he wasn’t that cultured, but he knew enough to know that this wasn’t what should be chosen. However, no one was dead or on fire yet, so this had to be the start of something good.

Still, Kaegen refused to apologise and instead told her to keep her life for herself, what ever that meant. It was probably a version of one of his nonsensical insults and there was not way in hell Aurelia was going to let that past after what he had done to her.

Although she had dragged the boy into this confrontation, he didn’t hesitate to put a barrier between her and Kaegen. She was rather contented with her choice and to have picked a boy who spontaneous got involved to fit the role as some sort of bodyguard. She would get his name later, right now, she had to deal with Kaegen and the relentless sneezes. The involuntary expulsion of air was making her chest hurt.

Since the first day they met, Schrodinger and Aurelia never got along. Schrodinger never failed to leave her alone when she was on his former bed and there was not one day Aurelia gotten a good night’s rest without his fur getting everywhere and causing her to sneeze.

Despite the sneezes, Aurelia heard every word her roommate had to say and she could not believe why anyone would back Kaegen up. Aurelia was perfectly capable in defending herself. So what if Kaegen attacked, she wasn’t going to let him get her so easily this time nor was he going to be left along either.

Her eyes followed where the sickly looking boy was moving in the crowd. Shortly after Xailah left with the cat and her sneezes came to a halt, Aurelia made her move. Her heels clicking noisily again the floor of the ballroom to close the gap between her and Kaegen.

Get back here Deathmote!” She hissed as she made her way through the dense crowd of masked ball-goers. The loud muggle music that she despised was not helping her cause at all.

There's a difference between fashionably late, and fashionable and late.

The first shows a sort of disregard to the people around you, a firm belief that showing up after the appointed time is asserting your dominance, like you had something better to do then show up on time. The second, on the other hand, is simply a bad sense of timing coupled with likely spending too long trying to make yourself look pretty before showing up.

Elena was dealing with the latter of the two, fashionable and late, because apparently every ball came with some kind of issue or adventure that Elena would either have to be equipped to handle, or unable to handle at all and simply prepared to leave at the first sign of trouble. Elena's gone with the latter, because she didn't feel like ruining another bit of formalwear, and was thusly in a dress.

Sadly, a side effect of being fashionably late was also not having anyone to talk to. Elena had done no preparation beyond getting a mask, so there was no date, no friend-date, and in addition she had no idea who was even coming to this thing.

So Elena decided to wander around the party like a ghost, or rather a very confused young lady.

LAMIK'S PERSPECTIVE
-------------------------------------------------------

Interacting with: @Aideen Ryan
Mentioning: @Saskia Nicholson @Ayden White

Though Lamik found it slightly strange that it seemed to take her a few moments to even register the fact that he had asked a question, the boy figured that it wasn't too important. "That sounds fun. At least at your town there wouldn't be whatever this..." He gestured to the air "...music is." Lamik really wasn't a big fan of the loud music that reverberated throughout the ballroom. When he heard about a masquerade ball, the boy expected soft classical music- things you saw during balls during the movies. He really hoped that later on in the event the band would step out- or at least turn the volume down.

"Also- don't worry about the date thing. Tons of people didn't bring a date. For example, I came alone." Noticing someone out of the corner of his eye, Lamik grinned and pointed at her. "That's Saskia, I think. It looks like she came alone too." Lamik was just about to call her over to meet Aideen when someone approached her. With a bit of a less cheerful voice and a slightly annoyed, unfamiliar, jealous feeling inside that he really didn't want to be feeling, Lamik shook his head. "Oh. Nevermind. Maybe she does have a date?"
