Eden, upon fully realizing he and Lilian were abandoned by the two people in charge of taking care of him, looked up at his sister for guidance. She’d done this once before right? So, Eden gripped the sleeve of her shirt.

Lilian’s eagle-like eyes swept over to him before they narrowed on him.

“Let’s just find a compartment. I don’t care.” Lilian ripped her arm away from his and moved forward. Eden followed her, obedient as always.

She walked to a random, empty compartment before shoving Eden roughly inside. Lilian slung her bag against its wall before claiming her space next to the window. Eden sat diagonal from her, by the door. He curled in on himself to make himself smaller. He didn’t want to further irritate his sister.

His hands fidgeted with the hem of his sleeves. Eden desperately wished that he had his stuffed rabbit to keep his hands occupied instead of them just being... empty. He’d take anything to fidget with instead of just uncomfortably adjusting his hands every other minute.

Lilian was also visibly getting annoyed by the constant sounds of the friction of his coat and his boots and his pants and anything else that dared to make even the slightest of sounds. So, Eden sighed and kicked off his shoes before bringing his knees to his chest. He wrapped his arms around them before resting his head on top, trying to hopefully fall asleep and avoid the awkward silence that was beginning to suffocate him in the train compartment.

Eden assumed he, somehow, fell asleep, considering the next time he opened his eyes everything was considerably brighter.

Lilian also seemed to be in a better mood. She has several candy wrappers littered all over the seats and the floors on her side of the shared area. Lilian didn’t acknowledge him; She just continued to pop several different candies into her mouth and stared blankly out the window. Her face, although still blank, was smooth, unstressed, and unwrinkled. She didn’t look miserable... or bored. She looked, if Eden dared to say, content.

Eden was a stupid child, so he did a stupid thing. He interrupted her peace by asking a stupid question, “Are you excited for the new year?”

Eden mentally berated himself when Lilian jolted out of her reverie and slowly brought her eyes over to meet his.

She said nothing, just stared at him. Eden felt embarrassed.

He was going to apologize but Lilian interrupted him.

“Yeah.”

Lilian looked back to the window.

The following minutes were composed entirely of tense silence and Eden silently chastising himself. Lilian pulled him out of his head once again.

“I need to show you something. Come here.” she rose quickly to her feet. Lilian opened the door enough to peek around before quietly opening it. She grabbed Eden tight around the wrist before pulling him quickly pass several compartments. They all blurred together, the sudden movement causing his vision to blur.

They suddenly stopped, Lilian paused between two compartments. She looked between the two before reaching over to the one to her left. She slammed its door open and shoved Eden inside.

Surprised, Eden couldn’t stop his fall and instead landed hard on his side.

Eden pushed himself up slightly to look at the entrance of the compartment. Lilian towered over him, glowering down. Stunned, he could only watch as she closed the door behind him.

Eden felt like crying, but the presence behind him prevented him from doing so.

Eden rose slowly to avoid another wave of dizziness and further irritation of the now forming migraine.

He shoved down the anxiety that tried to bubble to the surface and turned to the other person in the compartment. Eden croaked out a weak, “Hi.” and waved.

Leonard Valdelamar had been taken to platform 9¾ by his Aunt Mary and her friend Amelia, who was basically as good as another auntie by now. The previous year had been lonely for Leo, far from home and having to hide the existence of magic from his classmates, teachers, everyone, after growing up surrounded by it all his life. He was lucky he wasn't manifesting wandless magic by that time, and even then that his accidental magic had always been more on the subtle side.

Leo had started to get used to the idea that he might actually have to travel alone when he was startled by the two strangers. He didn't usually mind it, but he had really hoped for some friends now that he didn't have to keep quiet about magic, so it was somewhat grating on his hopes that no one else had joined him.

Maybe that had been selfish of him to think, seeing as a kid just got pushed by another into Leonard's compartment. The door was slammed closed immediately after, and the smaller looking one hazarded a timid greeting.

Was this really the note a friendship could start?

Well, he could work with that.

"Hey, I'm Leonard." He offered a hand, trying to keep his accent under control. "Would you like to prank that kid?"

Still disoriented and combating a newly forming migraine, Eden just stared dumbly at the compartment’s occupant. He felt jolted and jumbled. Going from being in a safe and secure room with someone he knew and thought he was close with to a room with a stranger who he had to tilt his head up to meet eyes with only caused the itchy feeling to return and begin to bite at his skin. It wasn’t the fault of his coat either, with it being left behind in his sister’s compartment and not on him. Yet, despite the lack of it, the itch was still there. The heaviness hasn’t yet made its presence, however, an odd lightness seemed to overcome Eden’s body. Almost as if he was floating.

But Eden felt his shoes on the floor, so he tried to reign himself in. Though he didn’t feel as if he were truly grounded, he shoved passed that to look at the other person.

The words they said to him hovered around as Eden’s brain refused to process it. The name though, Leonard, was the only piece that stuck. Eden worked on autopilot, shaking the offered hand and mumbling out his name before the rest of Leonard’s words registered.

Eden jumped back slightly, hand slipping from Leonard’s.

Eden frantically waved his hands, exclaiming, “Ah! No need for that! That’s just my sister. Thank you, though." Eden punctuating with a nervous smile.
