Amethyst was woken early that morning, long before the sun had risen and the sky still dark. She was used to waking up early, but waking someone at five o’clock was human cruelty. Groggy, she tossed and turned in bed until a sharp knock was heard on her ebony door and her grandmother’s strict, monotone voice followed:
"Amethyst, you will get up right now and finish all your lessons for the day. We have visitors arriving later, and I want you to meet them."
It was not a request. It was an order — one Amethyst knew better than to argue with.
Rubbing her sleepy eyes, she forced herself out of bed. Eris, the house elf, moved around the room preparing her clothes for the day while Amethyst watched silently with the least interest. Within minutes, Eris had left her alone to get ready.
Still sluggish, Amethyst somehow managed to go through her daily routine and dress herself in whatever Eris had prepared for her. Breakfast was served shortly after, and soon she found herself seated at her study table, her head heavy and mind foggy as she struggled through her lessons.
Just as she thought she could sneak back into bed for a nap, Eris knocked at her door again.
"Your grandmother is calling for you, miss."
"Not again" Amethyst found herself grumbling.
Amethyst sighed and dragged herself toward the main hall, where her grandmother sat waiting. Without a word, the old woman motioned for her to sit beside her.
"Yes, Grandma?" Amethyst asked, trying not to yawn.
Her grandmother gracefully removed a ring from her own right hand and held it up in the air for Amethyst to look at it.
"Amethyst, do you know about this ring?"
"Isn’t it our family heirloom? It’s really pretty," Amethyst replied, admiring the ring.
"It is more than just a family heirloom," her grandmother said seriously. "It’s a blessing — a piece of luck passed down through generations of the Castillo family."
Amethyst looked at her grandmother, unsure of what to say next.
"Do you know why you were named Amethyst?" her grandmother asked.
"Because you liked the name?" Amethyst guessed.
"Silly girl," her grandmother said with a sigh. "Do you know what stone this ring is made from?"
"No..." Amethyst admitted, fidgeting slightly.
"No? Really? Your mother tells you everything other than what's important in those little bedtime stories of hers!," her grandmother muttered.
Amethyst wasted no time defending her mother. "She does tell me important things! I just don’t understand how a stone can be so important. Moreover, I love her bedtime stories."
"Don’t talk back, young lady," her grandmother snapped.
Amethyst fought the urge to roll her eyes.
"This stone is an amethyst," her grandmother explained. "It is believed to influence the energy around a person, attracting good luck, fortune, and abundance. This particular stone has been with the family as long as our business has existed. Do you understand where I’m going with this?"i
"You’re saying... my name is connected to it? But Grandma, I don’t think I brought any luck to the family," Amethyst said quietly.
Her grandmother’s stern expression softened to the slightest.
"That’s a story for another day, Amethyst. Just know this — you are a form of luck for the Castillo name, and you must never bring dishonour to it."
Amethyst sighed dramatically. "This is why I don’t like story time with you, Grandma. First, you never ever finish the story. And second, it always turns into a lecture as if I'm the dumbest creature in this huge world."

The goblin, the witch and the ring

Little Harvey was quite the excited young goblin as today promised to be an adventure. Though if you were to look at him you would hardly know. The fidgeting expressions common among boys his age were being successfully ironed out by the strict upbringing and tutelage of his grandfather and in its place the stoic demeanor that most would come to know him by. However, that didn't stop the smirk from remaining plastered to his face as they began their travels to the Castillo Manor.
The trip to Lancashire had been easy enough. A bit of floo powder had taken care of that, but what excited Harvey more was to be in a hidden wizarding village. No need to hide their features or talk in whispers. While some may look to a half-breed like Harvey with intolerance, it was a nice change of pace to be open. Back home in London they had to be careful. Anywhere outside of Diagon Alley and they stuck out like sore thumbs. It would have been so nice to live in a village such as this, but his grandfather's duties required him to stay in the Muggle capital.
The village proved to be quite the treat, but the real excitement came when they arrived at the manor. Now, Harvey and his family lived a lavish life. His grandfather had amassed a wealth that would last for generations and their townhome was the envy of many a witch, wizard or goblin. However, it paled in comparison to the old, pureblood money of the magical community. These ancient manors reminded Harvey of Muggle royalty and the Castillo residence was magnificent to take in as the gardens alone begged to be explored for hours. However, the Gothic features that towered into the sky really drew Harvey's attention. Whether it was the arched windows adorned with ivy patterns or the intricate engravings that marked the gate, it was all leaving quite the impression on the young boy. Perhaps one day he too would have something like this.
A quick snap of his grandfather's fingers brought Harvey's attention back to focus as they approached the entrance. All morning long he had been lectured on how important this visit was and how he was to behave a proper gentleman. The boy straighten his attire and prepared himself. As a house elf greeted them and brought them into foyer of the residence he did his best to keep his eyes straight ahead, but the lavish design of the mansion drew his gaze. The dark aesthetic spoke to Harvey, but it was all put together in a way that was still comfortable and filled with light. He could tell the furniture was expensive, yet it still gave him a sense of inviting that was hard to pull off. As they were escorted through he could see paintings and photographs of the Castillo family and it only emphasized that they were in the company of influential people.
"Prepare yourself." Harvey's grandfather instructed with a prod of his long finger. "Yes, sir." The boy responded and they were soon shown into the room in which the Castillo's were waiting.

Amethyst now found herself intrigued, though her thoughts continued to wander towards the softly flowing River Lune beyond the manor grounds. Her grandmother's half-narrated story lingered in her mind.
And why, of all evenings, had her grandmother chosen now to present the ring to her? Not that she was not aware of her family heirloom. But it was not a topic that was casually brought up. The timing could hardly be accidental. Jenalyn was not a woman who did anything without purpose. Tonight, of all nights, they were meant to be hosting guests, yet her grandmother seemed far more concerned with old heirlooms and half-narrated stories, much to her dismay.
Unless, of course, the two were connected.
Amethyst’s eyes widened ever so slightly as the thought struck her.
Maternal grandparents?
The possibility hit her with such dreadful force that she instinctively brought a hand to her forehead in a quiet, horrified facepalm, the moment gaining attention from her grandmother instantaneously.
"Amethyst" Jenalyn said sharply, her voice retaining that unwavering air of authority she carried so effortlessly.
“N-nothing! Sorry!" the girl blurted at once, sitting up straighter in her seat, to which her grandmother paid no heed.
She neither questioned nor scolded her further, which somehow made Amethyst feel even more embarrassed. Some thoughts were never meant to cross one’s mind, and she was quite certain this had been one of them.
A moment later, the heavy ebony doors to the drawing room creaked open.
Eris, the house elf, quietly guided the long-awaited guests inside.
Jenalyn rose gracefully from her seat to greet them, and Amethyst hurried to do the same, smoothing the folds of her dress as she followed her grandmother’s lead.
The very first thing she noticed was how remarkably short their guests were.
Amethyst was quick to shoo the thought away. It was rather impolite, considering how they had just entered the room. She smiled politely towards her grandmother's guests.
The boy appeared to be around her own age. Neat and proper, but then again, Amethyst wasn't too surprised to see that. All her grandmother's guests seemed to carry the same formal air around them.
Jenalyn extended a hand in greeting before smoothly ushering the guests towards the drawing room’s elegant chenille sofas.
Amethyst sat beside her grandmother opposite the guests, carefully folding her hands in her lap and sitting straight whilst attempting with varying degrees of success not to stare too obviously.

The house elf lead Harvey and his grandfather through the large, ebony drawers and into the drawing room of the Castillo manor. Right away he would see the Matron of the house rise to greet them and soon by her side was a young girl. The older woman would address his grandfather first by extending her hand for a proper welcome. "Thank you for inviting us to your home, Jenalyn." Larnak's tone was full of respect, but the old goblin had little in the way of being nice or buttery. His gruff and gravely voice might come as a shock to young Amethyst, but that was just his way. "Allow me to introduce you to my grandson, Harvey." Larnak would nod towards the boy, his signal to pipe up and say something. "Hello, madam. It's a pleasure to meet you." The lad would shake the woman's hand too. Though he was just a boy his hands would be just as large of not larger than the hers. A unique aspect of his genetic makeup.
They would then be shown to some very elegant looking sofas. Now, Larnak had some nice furniture in their home, but these felt almost too rich to even be sat on. Harvey was extra carefully to sit carefully. As the adults began their conversation, he would do his best to sit still and not fidget. He couldn't help but to let his gaze drift towards the younger girl though. Would they attend Hogwarts together? They did seem around the same age even if Harvey appeared to be younger due to his height. That's when Larnak's words brought the attention to the children. "So, Jenalyn. I understand that your family's ring might need a tune-up. It is the child's namesake, is it not?" Harvey's eyes brightened at the idea. Named after jewelry? How interesting! He waited the answer.
