Regreening the Great Lake closed

This was written for an errand, but if you want your characters to intercept/meet Gem, you can write!
Gemini walked down to the Great Lake, remembering the event he’d heard of a few days ago. Planting and regreening spaces after a fire, or something like that.

Either ways, it gave him an excuse to get out onto the grounds and work with his hands a little, and that was enough.

He stepped out onto the grass, enjoying the crisp, cool air. He strode to the lake with a slight spring in his step, watching the other students already there at work.

Under a minute later, he stood in front of a small heap of seed packets. He sifted through them, until finally deciding on one labelled ‘water lobelia,’ Lobelia dortmanna.

Once that had been decided, he absorbed himself in the work, spreading the seeds in the shallower, muddy banks of the Great Lake. He patted them down a little, letting gravity do the rest of the work in the soft mud.

It’s nice, he decided, to be out with both nature and other humans. Nice to remember that they aren’t always mutually exclusive. Even though I still think they mostly are.

He continued to walk along the banks, occasionally putting a hand in the water to enjoy the cold water and the strong current.

Some might find the lake disconcerting or creepy because it reminded them of how insignificant and powerless humans are, even with magic. But Gem liked it for that exact reason; nature didn’t lie.

His thoughts rarely drifted, but today, with the plants and water and air, they did. I wonder what bizarre thing is going to happen at school next…

and how are Jacob and my parents doing, back home in Scotland?

Wonder if Jacob’s been continuing our usual herpetology hikes, has he found anything interesting recently? If he knew that there are people here who could talk to snakes, he would be totally mind blown…

but what about here in school? Will I make any new friends? I always seem to say the wrong things, and push away people who try and help and make friends. I’ll have to work on that…

Gem fidgeted with the now near-empty seed packet, mulling over his worries.

This, he know remembered, was why he never let his mind wander. It found all the bad things and dragged them out, and ruined his composes, logical, humorous and maybe even likeable façade.

He bit his lip, bringing himself back to the present, and scattered the rest of the seeds, trudging back to the castle.
