Sorting Ceremony
The train was so loud—kids shouting, steam hissing, luggage clattering—that I almost didn’t notice when we pulled into Hogwarts. But the moment I stepped into the Great Hall, everything went quiet. It was like someone hit mute on the world. I just stood there for a second, staring up at that ceiling, all those stars twinkling above me. My heart was pounding so hard I could almost hear it.
Then they called my name. I shuffled up, tripping over my robes, and sat on the stool. The Sorting Hat landed on my head and started talking before I had a chance to think.
“Curious mind… ambitious, yes, but not for power. Loyalty, empathy… hmm. A thirst for knowledge, an instinct for puzzles—clearly, a Ravenclaw!”
I nearly fell off the stool—Ravenclaw was exactly where I wanted to be, but I didn’t expect it. When it shouted “RAVENCLAW!” I ran—well, kind of hurried—back to the table, elbows bumping people. My pumpkin juice sloshed everywhere, and my hair fell into my face, but I didn’t care. Messy hair’s part of my look.
I squeezed in between two smiling faces and watched plates of chicken and potatoes float by. I was too busy blinking to grab anything at first. Finally, I tore off a bit of bread and whispered about the chocolate frog trick I pulled as a kid (I’ll tell that story later). The girl next to me laughed so hard she almost snorted, and suddenly I wasn’t nervous about Charms class at all.
Surrounded by blue and bronze, I felt warm inside—like I’d finally found home, even if I still had no clue what the heck I was doing.

Sorting Ceremony
Date: September 1, 2024
Time: Evening
Location: Great HallInteraction: n/a
Outfit: Hogwarts robes
speaking: #936606Astrid made her way in line with all the other first-years, heart thumping loudly in her chest as she looked around at students sitting on the 4 house tables. She was going to be sorted soon, into one of those.
She'd heard a lot about the houses, from her parents, cousins, and children in the line with her. Her parents had been in Gryffindor, and she couldn't say that the house was not alluring. She'd love to be a Gryffindor; brave and courageous.
Her parents had told her about the sorting ceremony, too; apparently they put a talking hat on your head which decides your house. That seemed a bit ridiculous, a thought-analyzing talking hat - even for a person born in a magic family. She'd also heard a few children make their own guesses about the ceremony, which were mostly wild and absurd, ranging from an intelligence test to dividing on the basis of dancing skills.
Soon, the ceremony begun, and with the first student's name being called, it was clear what the ceremony entailed. A hat on your head that yells out the house name. Her parents had been right, after all.
Time passed too quickly for her liking, and certainly not enough students had been sorted yet for her to feel confident; before her name was announced.
"Adair, Astrid"
Astrid walked towards the stool on which the hat was placed, her walk slow and nervous. She hoped she'd get into a 'cool' house, like Gryffindor or Slytherin, probably. She lifted the hat off of the stool, and sat down on it, placing the hat on her head.
Hmm... What do we have here?" A rough, gravelly voice startles her. It was the hat, obviously, but she hadn't expected it to sound like this; and she hadn't expected the voice to feel.. trustable and comforting.
"Brave, determined, smart.." It said, and she soon realized it was talking about her, analyzing her mind. "But also humble, kind and compassionate..." It continued on, while Astrid chose to continue her silence, not wanting to interrupt the hat. "Which house do you want to be placed in?" It suddenly questioned her. Gryffindor, she thought, hoping he would be able to analyze her mind to understand what she was thinking.
"You're brave, but you have greater ambitions in life than personal benefit or recognition, even if you don't realize it yet. You want for others, with others. That's a quality Gryffindor would not make much use of. Perhaps," It paused, and her breath hitched. Was he going to place her in..
"HUFFLEPUFF!"
It yelled, and she knew the decision was made. She had a weird feeling in her chest, as she made her way to the table. The hat had to have said something true, right?
She didn't know if she minded being in the house a few children in the line described as 'lame', all she knew was that the decision would not be changed, and sulking is no good. She was going to make the best out of this, and hopefully, it would all be a memory she'd cherish in the future.

Lillian was in the line. She was very worried and scared of what might happen. How were they going to sort new students? Was she going to make a fool of herself not knowing any magic? How was she to know magic when the school hadn't taught her anything yet? Deep breath Lillian she reminded herself. You only experience this once, try to enjoy it. She breathed deeply twice in order to calm down. To distract herself she listened to Headmaster Lear talk. Then a girl was called. She walked up to a stool and put on an old, patchy hat. A few seconds later the hat shouted out a house. The girl sat down while everyone cheered. Was that all ? Trying on a hat ? Lillian was relieved.
But nowhere near relieved enough when "McMason Lillian" was called. She nervously walked to the stool and put on the hat. A voice startled her. Hmm... I see... bravery... intelligence... oh... sometimes like school eh? Well... I think you better be a GRYFFINDOR! shouted the hat. Lillian was relieved and happy that deciding her house was so easy. She, still a little shook up, took her place as a Gryffindor, ready to find out what new things might happen to her here.

Sorting Ceremony
The young boy had been wary as he was told how he'd be getting to the apparently 'prestigious' wizarding school of Hogwarts, the instructions had been bizarre, even more bizarre than his first trip to Diagon Alley. After all, running face-first into a brick wall to get onto a train sounded like something an adult would tell a kid to mess with them. Yet somehow it had worked, and the magical train that secretly wound the countryside like a neon-coloured snake wearing some sort of anti-muggle disguise glasses puffed along its tracks. Wearing the impractical robes and shoving the annoyingly floppy hat into his pocket, he had sat there for hours while someone carted around a dolly of treats and goodies that made him question if diabetes even existed in this outlandish new world of his.==========
When they arrived and had been herded into rowboats like a particularly rowdy group of cats, he tried his best to preserve his personal space, muttering low profanities in his mother tongue as his entire body remained tensed and wound up with stress. Too many strangers in too close proximity for his liking, it certainly tested his newly-found self-control to not immediately start bickering with anyone who dared to bump into him. Swallowing dryly once they had finally gotten off, he took a breath, slipping into the crowd with a sense of distaste at every brush against his robes or hand. With how apprehensive he was, he barely even took eh time to actually absorb the sight of the massive castle or the glass-like lake, instead his eyes darted about as if waiting for a wolf to lunge out from a herd of sheep and bite him.
As they got closer to the front entrance, he immediately took note of the armoured elder towering over them like an ominous pillar. At least, ominous in his opinion. As he watched their gaze roam the crowd of children, occasionally punctuated by a greeting, a crawling sense of unease washed over him, jaw tightening, he slipped in beside a few taller kids to keep them from properly catching a glimpse of him, away from the unsettling man's sight. He couldn't entirely place why he felt this unease, perhaps it was their eyes, or maybe the almost deathly pallor of their skin. Either way, he wanted no part of their attention; he didn't need a friendly greeting anyhow. That'd simply be an unwelcome distraction.
As they entered the great hall, he let his gaze rove around for a bit, skin prickling at the many eyes observing their entrance. He hated... about everything he saw, aside from the projection of the night sky above. That was his only comfort, though, as he remained as inconspicuous as possible in the clump of kids he sought shelter within. Fingers rapidly tapping his thigh in a frantic rhythm, he listened to the spiel, not even glancing at the group of staff at the back of the hall. The armoured man revealed himself to be the headmaster, perfectly good news to him, it likely meant he'd never run into them 1 on 1 during his entire year here unless he did something particularly criminal, which had had zero intentions of doing.
Barely listening to the poem, he merely questioned where the brains the hat had supposedly been given had been put, it wasn't like the thing had a skull... or perhaps it was a spirit possessing a hat. Either way, he didn't like the thought of anything searching through his mind. Especially not a hat with ambiguous origins of sentience. They really had to do such a tradition? Sighing as the list began, he swiftly ignored everyone who went up before him, he'd be near the end, unfortunately, so he had to sit through the awkward silence that followed each student getting the suspicious thing dropped onto their little heads, before the abrupt calls of their house would make him jolt. The only break he got from this were the faint murmurs of older students, the occasional snickers of friends messing around, and the clinking of utensils or creaking of seats. He doubted he'd ever look back on this day fondly.
The long wait for his name left him feeling tired and high-strung, like a coffee addict who had gone without their favourite bitter black drink for a day straight. Tapping his fancy stick he had gotten from Ollivanders absently with one nail, he jolted as his name was called, eyes narrowing as tension swiftly coiled up his muscles once more. He hated this, this quiet attention, these probing eyes, and the eerily still gaze of the headmaster on him as he stepped forward and hesitated momentarily. He felt like he was going to get jumped. Mouth quirking slightly into a guarded frown, he stepped forward, his footsteps seeming loud against the floor. He could only silently thank the few spectators who didn't seem interested in watching him in the slightest.
Staring down the hat for a few heartbeats, his fingers tapped rhythmically on his thigh once more, before he muttered something darkly in Russian, and sighed sharply, sitting down with a feeling of paranoia. It probably wasn't the most welcoming thing to experience when the thing decided to prod his mind, but, given how many types the hat had seen, they didn't miss a beat as they spoke into his mind, making him bristle. "Goodness, you're quite a guarded one, aren't you?" the old voice echoed in his head, just as unsettling as he expected it to be. "It seems you have good justification for it too, you've been through a lot, haven't you?" The boy's fingers twitched with the urge to pull the old thing off of his head.
Yeah, I have: enough for me to want you in and out of my thoughts as quickly as possible. The thought rose to the forefront of his mind as his fingers drummed the rhythm of his pulse.
The hat continued without missing a beat, "Guarded, but sharp, your mind is a shield and your words are your sword. Perhaps Ravenclaw would suit you... mmm, no, not quite," They mused, apparently finding something else in his brain to pick at, his lip lifted in a grimace. "You've faced many challenges, but almost every one was faced head-on. You aren't quite ambitious, but you are methodical. You're fearful yet despite that fear, you've stood your ground against the tests your life has thrown at you." Was this the psychic equivalent of thinking out loud? If so, it was more annoying than actually thinking out loud, "Yes, you have a certain harshness to you, that's for certain, but there's a greater strength behind it... I think I see now. You have a foundation, and with time, you'll fit in far better in..."
The boy flinched as the internal voice suddenly grew far louder beyond his head, calling out his house name, "Gryffindor!"
He blinked, recalling the description of the house he had apparently been dumped into, then he snorted. That is a funny joke... Of course, he knew it wasn't meant as one, but it sure sounded like one to him. As the hat was removed, the only response to the internal comment he got was a knowing smile. He hated it. As the loud cheers rang out, though, he supposed it was very much on the bottom of the list of things he hated; he always despised noise more.
Shooting an icy glare at the loudest table that was apparently his, he grumbled lowly in his mother tongue once more. Looking at the new red lining in his robe, he huffed before walking swiftly to the table, away from the prying eyes that had been watching him this entire time.
He wanted to go to sleep.

With a nervous, shuddering breath...Lily followed the line of first years in front of her. Her mum had told her about the four houses and the sorting ceremony...after a lot of begging from Lily that is. She told her about the four Hogwarts houses; Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin.
When Lily had asked how it was decided it left her baffled. A hat...that is how it happened. They placed mind-reading hat on your head and the hat yelled what house you belong in. It blew her mind, it was that simple!? No test or death defying trials to prove your worth?! It was a weight off her shoulders. When Lily had asked her mum what house she was in, her mum gave a proud smile and told her;
Lily gulped as she got closer and closer to the front. Her mind was racing...what house would she be in? Would she be like her mum? She took another deep breath and decided to look around the hall. It was incredible! Between the ceiling that was a mirror of the night sky outside and the floating candles, that was enough to take her breath away...then the four tables all sporting their house colours, it truly was beautiful...
She froze. Lily gulped as she slowly walked to the stool, turning to face the entire school and sat down.

It seemed like her mum's side of the family had a mix of houses. Her Nan was a Hufflepuff, her grandad a Ravenclaw and her Aunt a Ravenclaw..."Gryffindor. The best house out of the four in my opinion!"

"Ryan, Lily!"
She froze. Lily gulped as she slowly walked to the stool, turning to face the entire school and sat down.
She thought as the hat was placed onto her head and the world went silent except for a voice.Did they really have to put it front and centre? Couldn't they have done this...I don't know...not in front of the whole school?
Lily gulped and gripped the sides of the stool to keep them from shaking."Hmm...now here's an interesting one...Very clever, yes. Observant. You notice more than you let on...There's a quiet power in you. Not loud, not showy...but steady...hmm. A good heart, no doubt...and a thirst for knowledge...but you don't just want to learn - oh no - you want to understand. To master. To protect what matters"
Lily's shoulders sagged in relief that it was over. She heard cheering and clapping from the Slytherin table as she took the hat off and handed it back to the Headmaster. She couldn't help a small smile as she made her way to her new house table. Excitement filled her as she sat down, she was finally here...at Hogwarts. But also a sense of ambition too...not the boastful kind, no - but the kind that burns slowly, waiting for the right moment. You've got grit, girl. That is for certain...You'd do well in...SLYTHERIN!

Paris stood with the line of 1st years, waiting her turn. Her brother Xhosa had told her what to expect, but it was still nerve wracking. Her mind was racing in all sorts of directions, but Paris did her best not to fidget. ‘What if the sorting hat saw something bad in me? What if I’m not supposed to be here? Well I guess I am, but what if I find I don’t deserve to be here? The hat will know that. That hat is really dirty; I don't wanna put it on my head. The second leg of the stool is shorter than the rest; that’s gonna be really annoying to sit on.’ etc
Finally after 31 other people, Paris heard her name called. She blinked hard twice before walking up to the stool. Looking down at the hat, she briefly thought, ‘gross’, before sitting down on the stool and gingerly placing the sorting hat on her head…
Paris stopped counting the minutes (2 minutes, 31 seconds spent on the stool) and smiled as she walked over to the welcoming Hufflepuff table. Her new house cheered for her as she sat down, and Paris decided that, ‘Maybe I do deserve to be here after all. Wait am I realizing that only because a stupid hat yelled something at a crowded room? What a ridiculous way to decide worth. It’s like the hat is saying you’re only a good person if I think you are. And if it decided you are, then you can only be what I tell you that you are. Slytherins can’t be brave according to the hat and Ravenclaws can’t work hard. Wow. We’ve all bought into this hat’s intense gaslighting for the past thousand years. etc…. But yay Hogwarts I guess!

Well, I must say your mind seems rather excited eh? It seems… very natural for your mind, but you seem to be more focused despite an overexcited mind. Very curious and watchful… hmm. You’d do well in Ravenclaw. But you’re also very… direct. Not afraid to speak your mind or be different, are we? That’s a Gryffindor trait, but there seems to be something behind it. You’re clever; you like to get out of trouble and you’re quite good at it. But again, I am noticing something paired with each of these distinctions……. Aha! I have found what drives you; you are the hardest worker I have ever known. Not always do you use this talent for wise purposes, but it leaves me with no doubt as to where to put you…

The castle was grand.
Lyssandra had heard and read multiple accounts of this fact; yet she was still in awe to behold its majesty. It was not that the foundations were of such fine elements. Rather, from the very moment Lyssandra set her eyes upon the castle, echoes of ages past seem to envelope her.
When she was on the train, she made little to no contact with anyone, even those who sat with her, in hope of preparing herself and allowing her nerves to settle. Now that she was sitting on the boats, her heart began to skip a few beats. She rubs her thumb across her left palm.
While others her age were exclaiming their “oohs” and “aahs”, Lyssandra’s eyes were set dead ahead towards where the next 7 years of her life will be centered around. The cool breeze of the night sky and the gentle rocking of the lake almost comforted her and Lyssandra was more than grateful enough that she whispers a quiet “thank you” to whatever magic or element was listening.
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════
One foot upon the castle’s stone and Lyssandra could almost feel the magic and the history it held within its halls (or was it just her nerves becoming a heavier weight upon her shoulder?). She followed the flow of First Years, all dressed in their black robes, and took great care in not steeping another’s robes as they ascended the stairs.
“Remember Little Blue,” She hears Carolus’ voice echoing in her mind.
“Hogwarts is a place for you to learn, grow, and makes friends. You are not expected to be exceptionally perfect, you are expected to be a child and grow at your own pace so relax a little bit, okay?”
If she could recall correctly, Carolus was a Ravenclaw and was a terrible bookworm himself before he met Cousin Dion. If anything, Lyssandra could only be amused at the memory. She had no one else to talk to about her Hogwarts’ worries. Her older cousins were either Durmstrang or Beauxbatons students. Her older brother was currently enrolled in Durmstrang, and she would not dare ask her parents nor her aunts and uncles about their time in Hogwarts (considering the state it was in during their time), so Carolus was her almost perfect choice.
The doors to the Great Hall opened and she was met with warmth, both from the ambience and from the welcoming gaze of their prospective professors.
Deep navy-blue eyes sparkled as the Headmaster spoke, standing in attention and smiling at his interaction with the Sorting Hat. As it sung, Lyssandra wondered if the Heroes of today had been just and nervous like her. Though her face did not betray anything, her heart fluttered as she rubbed her thumb across her left palm.
As the song finished with a round of applause, the names and their assigned houses were called. Lyssandra’s last name began with an N, it would take a while. Looking around, she notes the excited and nervous gleam of her fellow First Years’ eyes. This batch was a larger crop than usual, or so she heard someone from a table say.
Names, Houses, and applause…
Until finally,
“Navarus, Lyssandra!” She took a deep breath and took a seat on the stool, as elegantly as her etiquette teachers drilled into her mind. The fabric of the hat made her skin tingle as she slowly released her breath from her nostrils. In the recesses of her mind, she whispers:
‘Hello?’
‘Hello, Miss Navarus’ Lyssandra felt her shoulders jump and earned the Hat’s chuckles.
‘Never gets old. I will be looking into your mind now.’ Lyssandra gave a nod.
‘I have sorted your aunts and uncles during their time here. I see that they now have their own families. How lovely. Mhmm… Quite the curious little one, are you? Big dreams for someone so young. How’s Carolus? Ah, what a lovely wedding… what is this? Oh… Very well. At the tone of his voice, Lyssandra sat up straighter as the Hat made its final verdict.
‘Prepare yourself for I can see which house will fit your best. Determination, resilience, and ambition. The friends you make along the way and the alliances you forge will aid you in this journey, there is no doubt about it. Therefore…’
“SLYTHERIN!” Lyssandra offered a small smile and quietly thanked the hat as it was removed from her head. She approached her House’s table and was greeted with polite applause and some welcoming nods.
Slytherin was going to be her family in Hogwarts. For the next 7 years this will be her family and there was anything her family taught her, it was:
Familia praesertim, omnia pro Familia.
She takes her seat upon the bench, cheeks flushed with excitement and nervousness for what her future in Hogwarts holds.

Sorting Ceremony
Was I about to enter the famous wizarding school Hogwarts, known for its greatness!! I couldn't believe it!! Yet here I stood, amongst what I wanted to say was about fifty other first years, ready to be sorted. As I stood there listening to the headmaster talk, I couldn't help but reflect on what another student had spoken to me about on the train about the four houses, Gryffindor for the Brave, Ravenclaw for the Intelligent, Hufflepuff for the Diligent, and Slytherin for the Ambitious. I thought in my heart of hearts about my personality and who I was as a person, and who I would become here at Hogwarts! Yes!! I was a Slytherin, I knew it!! My ambition and dedication were unmatched!! As I stood there waiting for my name to be called, my heart raced...what if the sorting hat ignored my personality and chose a random house? What if it disagreed with my personality? How was it supposed to know what house I was meant to be in? It was just an old hat. Right? Could it really "see" into my mind and heart as the headmaster had said?
"Salazar Montecello"? The headmaster had called me!! It was my turn to come to the stool. I wedged my way through the other students and felt my heart pump even faster...why was I so nervous? Whatever the hat chose for me, it was the house I would be proud of! Or would I? I heard only rejects and loners go into Hufflepuff, but the Sorting Hat couldn't see that, could it? I was being judgmental before it even happened! No, I was confident that I was a Slytherin!! As I started to sit down on the stool, I almost didn't make it, I was so overwhelmed!! I slipped on the stairs a bit as I came up to the stool...The headmaster helped me regain focus as I sat down, and then I heard the Sorting hat speak:
"Hmmm." It seemed to be stalling on what to say... "I see a readied mind indeed, ready to explore the castle and yet ready to enhance your learning! Hmmm, yes, you have qualities of all four houses within you, but which overrules the others? Difficult... yes, exceedingly difficult!" I didn't know what to make of what the hat was saying, it was strange, like it didn't know whether I was meant to be here at Hogwarts or not! I listened more intently:
"I detect a sense of wit and chivalry about you, a certain sense of engagement, I dare say! An eagerness for learning and a new perspective on life. Hmmm...yes!! I know just what to do with you!!" Oh, no!! I had remembered at that moment that the kid I had met on the train had said that chivalry was a Gryffindor trait!! Was I getting sorted into Gryffindor and not Slytherin? I quickly thought hard in my mind, 'Slytherin, please, I wish to be placed in Slytherin!' The hat stalled for a minute, then spoke again:
"Slytherin, you say, Oh, you are daring, aren't you? Well, oh, my days!!...your ambitions are high, but I say, your loyalty to your friends and your studies is greater, Chivalry rules your heart and soul!! You are a better fit for: GRYFFFINDOR!!!!"
What?! No!! I clearly said Slytherin!! 'Wait!!' I told myself as I ambled to the Gryffindor table: 'I told myself before I was sorted that I would be proud of whatever house I was placed in!! I need to be more grateful that I wasn't kicked out of Hogwarts to be honest. Gryffindor will have to do...think about it, Salazar, both of your parents were Gryffindor, so why would you not be proud of taking on their legacy, besides.... You will learn things about yourself that you never thought were possible! Not to mention, the headmaster had said something like discovering yourself in your house...or something like that...at any rate, the lion is your favorite big cat!! You should be proud to be a Gryffindor, not distraught!! Be like a lion and be proud!! Get a hold of yourself, Salazar!!' I confidently shook off the disappointment and agreed with myself as I sat down at the Gryffindor table and started ladling food onto my plate.
I would learn everything that there is to know about being a successful Gryffindor, no matter what!!

Sorting Ceremony
Standing there in the Great Hall among the group of other first years, Lear Woodthorne couldn't help but feel stressed. He was surrounded by a grand and beautiful room—soaring enchanted ceilings, magical candles floating above his head, and ghosts drifting casually between the long tables—yet he couldn't focus on any of it. His whole life had led up to this exact moment, he thought, and now he stood on the edge of a choice he didn’t get to make, a sorting that would shape the next seven years of his life.
He didn’t particularly care which house he would be sorted into. His parents might have been mildly disappointed if he ended up in Hufflepuff, but ultimately, they would accept any outcome with polite nods and quiet expectations. His brother, though—he was a different story. Jean and his Slytherin pride, all cold smirks and perfectly rehearsed ambition. A walking stereotype in green robes. He would never let Lear live it down.
When his name was called, "Woodthorne, Lear," he drew a steady breath, composed his features, and stepped forward with purpose—head high, back straight, just as his mother had taught him. The hall buzzed behind him, but it was all a distant hum. He sat on the stool in the center of the room, keeping his eyes down, avoiding eye contact with any of the other students, and let the Sorting Hat fall over his head.
"And who do we have here," a dry, ancient voice echoed in his mind. "Another Woodthorne. Didn’t think I’d see another one so soon. And how very similar the two of you are."
At that, Lear felt his face twist into a scowl he didn’t catch in time. Anything but that, he thought sharply.
"What a bright mind… and so very thirsty for knowledge. You would do quite well in Ravenclaw, wouldn’t you? So calculating, so precise..."
There was a pause. A silence that seemed to weigh him.
"But that’s not all there is to you. So much ambition, so many plans… and such a strong will to see them through. You’re a curious one indeed. A quiet fire. I know exactly where you belong."
"SLYTHERIN!"
The cheer from the Slytherin table was immediate and enthusiastic, breaking Lear from his thoughts. He slipped off the stool and walked toward them, expression unreadable, posture perfect. Applause surrounded him, but he barely heard it.
So that’s it.
At least Jean wouldn’t be able to mock him now. But Lear knew better—this didn’t end anything. It only opened up new grounds for comparison, new ways to fall short in his parent's eyes.
I can’t wait, he thought, not bitterly, not even sarcastically—just cool, detached. He didn't know what he truly felt about any of this. But that was his reality now, and he couldn't help but feel a pang of excitement in his chest. This was the start of his life at Hogwarts.

Sorting Ceremony

The moment Elm entered the Great Hall, after a hasty and broad grin at Headmaster Lear, he sauntered off to the Gryffindor table. After some quick explaining, his brother, Maple, asserted what the house prefects were all trying to tell the boy. No, he could not sit with his brother. Yes, he had to sit with the other first years. Muddled, the poor lad quietly headed to the first year table.
With his head ducked down, he slipped out a small notepad and drew a sad face. It looked like this, although the circle was quite lopsided:
He waited patiently till it was his turn to be called forward by the sorting hat but soon he was lost doodling about the white pygmy puff he planned to own eventually. He was called back to reality by a loud, bellowing voice, "Mister Walker!" Maple immediately shot his brother a quick glance and a mouthed, "Go, go!"
His eyebrow raised in confusion, until a sighing prefect helped him to his feet and led him toward the hat. Seeing the brown and slightly tattered, old hat, Elm's eyes widened in awe. Suddenly he blurted, "Are you the sorting hat?" Stifled laughs flew across the room at the base question. Maple glared at the kids. Elm turned red.
"That I am, boy! Step up and I will sort you into your new home for the next 7 years."
Elm bristled at the laughs but calmed when the hat ignored the comments. Sitting down, he placed the hat on his head. "Hmm...interesting mix you have there, laddie.
The boy's eyes darted wide in surprise. "Mix? What do you mean?"
"You have quite a curious mind. You love books, learning, magic...yet, you also are ambitious in your own way. Once you find something you care deeply for, you hold to it and are determined to do it, no matter the cost. You can be brave sometimes when asked to do things for friends but in regards to yourself, you prefer to hold back without being walked over. However, what I see most is a beautiful, pure, kindness...rarely found in most...I find you worthy of...Hufflepuff!"
A pureblood with a fascination for muggle objects, pygmy puffs, and plants.
