One Saturday noon Matilde headed to the Great Hall for lunch. Humming to herself, she filled her plate with all her favorite items- macaroni and cheese, a piece of sourdough bread, and an apple- and found her usual place at the Hufflepuff table.
She hadn’t taken more than a few bites when she noticed a deck of tarot cards, lying on the table abandoned. Matilde eyed them curiously. She had a little experience with tarot cards, mostly from her mom, who liked to use them every now and then for guidance. She always said it focused her clairvoyance, made mere feelings more concrete. Matilde had watched her do readings many times, though her mother had always refused to tell Matilde anything from her future. She always wondered if her mother had ever looked into her future, through tarot cards or other means of divination.
Matilde looked around to see if anyone seemed to be missing the cards. There were only a few other people at the table, at the far end. As no one seemed to be currently using them, Matilde picked up the deck and turned it over in her hands. It was a pretty typical deck, similar to the ones she’d seen muggles use. She’d take it to the lost and found later, but for now, she didn’t see the harm.
The young witch pulled a card at random from the deck. It stared up at her, the card depicting a full moon flanked by twin pillars, with two dogs howling at it. The drawing also showed a stream connected to the ocean, with a crayfish emerging out of the water. The Moon. Mystery, hidden truths. Something is not as it appears, or something that one might have hidden from themselves. But also…
Intuition.
Matilde felt suddenly uneasy.

Graci felt at home in her not-so-new Hogwarts routine. Sure, she missed her home back in London, as well as her grandparents in Greece. but... this was normal now and she was fine with that.
Just because life is different now doesn't mean I have to forget. As Giagiá always said, 'We carry the past the way the sea carries light — always shifting, never lost.’
Graci often found comfort in her Giagiá's words. She was wise and knew Graci well, most of Graci's family members knew her better than she knew herself.
She sat down at her table when her eyes snagged on a girl at the Hufflepuff table with a deck of cards in her hand. Upon further inspection Graci saw that they were tarot cards.
In a spur of the moment she decided to go over there and talk to her.
"Do you know how to give readings? My Giagiá has a deck but we never use them. She said the future couldn’t be told — only remembered before it happens. I personally don’t believe in fate. But I do believe in patterns, I suppose."
Graci had always thought tarot reading and seers were fake and trashy, but since coming to Hogwarts and actually learning about seers she'd come to admire them more and more. She didn't know if this girl was prophetic in any way, but she was eager to find out.

Before she had time to consider if there were really any meaning to the card, Matilde was pulled from her thoughts by a seemingly friendly brunette Gryffindor.
Matilde smiled at her. “I know a little,” she said shyly. She thought about what the girl said, about the future being remembered before it happens. “I’ve never thought of it that way. My ma always says time isn’t as straightforward as most people think it is. The future has many possibilities, or something. However, my grandad always insists that there is only one future. I’m not really sure which one I believe… anyway, it’s a big topic in my household,” Matilde said, laughing a little. She considered telling the girl about her family’s seer history, but decided against it. It wasn’t a secret, or anything. Just… not something she always told people when they first met. You never knew what people’s reaction was going to be. Not that she was ashamed of it, or anything.
Matilde put The Moon back into the deck. She considered the girl. “Do you want me to do a reading for you? I’m not a seer so she thinksor anything, so no guarantees about the truth of anything the cards might show. You can absolutely say no.” What was the harm in asking? Besides, it could be fun.
”I’m Matilde by the way.”

Graci was intrigued by the older girl.
"Oh could you? I've never had a reading, but it seems really interesting, if you can look past face value, that is." Matilde. A pretty name for a glittering personality. And yes, a pretty person, though Graci didn't discriminate between the beautiful and those the world believed to not be beautiful.
"I'm Gracilia. Graci, Cillie, Cici, Beetle, any nickname imaginable under the sun or moon." Usually when Graci listed the nicknames she left out many. Apparently Gracilia was a 'nicknameable name' and Graci had a 'nicknamable personality'. Whatever that meant. She figured that it was just because she didn't mind being given nicknames. Depended on the person though.
People also got stuck on the beetle one. She never bothered to explain. Just because her name was a type of beetle doesn't mean that was her parents intentions.
Graci was kind of excited about this 'tarot reading'. It was a cool opprotunity to see if things were legit. Not that she thought it wasn't, just... that she didn't think cards were the most reliable. Then again, she was at a school that taught magic so.... Nothing was off the table.
