Today, Aodhan would be a superhero. However, not just any run-of-the-mill superhero, for he would be a special one. An immaculate one. A hero fully capable of bringing middle-aged suburban women to tears with his skilled acts of soil turning and gentle plant care.

Today, he would be... Flower Boy.

... Flower Man?

The Bloom Hero? The Fantastic Floret? The—why on earth was it so difficult to come up with good names for this?

While staring off into nowhere, Aodhan scratched the back of his head in thought, fully distracted from his task of digging into the very ground he was kneeling on. Somehow, speckles of dirt were already collected across his face, no doubt stemming from a combination of his wandering hands and more... absentminded endeavors.

He couldn't help it, though! His mind was a traveling enigma that he often struggled to reign in, and unfortunately, this planting errand was doing him no favors. He wasn't expecting anything grand, not at all. But he already spent a good five to ten minutes picking out his plant, because he was never going to plant an uncool plant, then another ten locating a spot with ample sunlight, and then even more time practically attacking the dirt. Such were the consequences of keeping an open mind, it seemed—there was equal opportunity between finding joy and disappointment when giving new experiences a chance.

Eventually, he chose to refocus on the hole he already made. He wasn't even sure if it was big enough for the seedling under his care. Or did that not matter much? And what about taking his tiny sprout out of its place without damaging the roots? Wasn't there... a technique for it? Questions upon questions; his recollection of lessons from herbology was absolutely failing him.

Maybe he required another opinion.

The boy turned to face the plantlet still sitting cute in its pot, leaning down to its level before opening his mouth.

"You just give me a few, Palmer," he began, his tone light as if comforting a child even younger than himself, "I'll make sure your new home is good enough for someone of your... leafiness. The transfer will be smooth, courtesy of Aodhan Industries."

And of course, it kept sitting cute as it did in pure silence because plants were not sentient, no matter how bored Aodhan was to imagine they were.

He then rose to his feet and observed his surroundings, chestnut eyes soaking in the plethora of students around him, some also participating in the errand and others not. Quickly, he picked one out of the masses: a girl with dark brown hair spilling barely past the shoulders, positioned not too far away. She was—well, he honestly didn't care what she was potentially preoccupied with, because he fully intended to interrupt her regardless.

"Hey, you! I got a question!" he called out, unapologetically pointing in her direction as he walked over, "How good are you at not killing plants?"

If Odette is being honest, she couldn’t care less about aiding the ecosystem. Well, at least not when it calls for growing wildflowers, ferns, sedges, and moss. When she first heard about this, she incorrectly assumed that the students could plant whatever they liked, wherever they liked. Its promise had the blue-eyed witch salivating at the thought of growing her own secret potion garden.

Not only would Odette be able to stop paying for new ingredients, but she could sell her botanicals to failure-prone first-years, ambitious potioneers, and her biggest consumer market– students taking their OWLs and NEWTs. She’d be swimming in pools of Galleons twice the size of the Great Lake simply from selling to stressed fifth and seventh years in Ravenclaw alone. They do not mess around with their grades. If anything, the young entrepreneur would have just been doing her house duty by slipping them some under-the-table herbs in their time of need.

Positively saint-like!... If you squint and ignore the galleons in her eyes.

By paying her a few Sickles, Odette could have had all their anxiety and tension melt away, leaving customers so relaxed they’d feel like they’re floating high off the ground on a cloud. Instead, she’s holding a packet of Scottish Bluebells and stabbing her trowel a smidgen too hard into the soil she’s supposed to be ‘healing.’ Glaring icily at the dirt as if it’s at fault for her own misunderstanding.

Odette can practically hear her mom lecturing her about respecting the earth and treating it with love and care in her soft and soothing voice — like a hippy, dad jokes— as she explains how to choose the right spot and prepare the soil properly.

Closing her eyes, Odette takes a steadying breath, releasing it slowly until she can feel the frustration dissipate into the soft spring breeze. Opening her eyes once more, she reaches for the trowel and tries again more gently. Her mind clears with each slide of her spade and every tender pat on the soil, ensuring each seed is tucked cozily underneath.

The persistent glare of the sun leaves a comforting warmth on her back as Odette loses track of time. Planting three seeds before wiping the sweat off her brow with a satisfied smile. Maybe there’s some merit to gardening even if she can’t profit from it. It’s quite relaxing.

Hearing a sudden shout, Odette looks away from her three cute little mounds of dirt towards a blurry figure walking her way– it’s hard to see with the sun in her eyes. When his shadow is close enough to block the light, she meets a boy wearing a yellow t-shirt and rolled-up jeans. His outfit and fluffy blonde hair really don't match the loud energy of someone asking if she's a plant murderer.

A quick glance behind him reveals a poorly dug hole next to a potted seedling, and she wonders if she’s about to be an accomplice to his crime.

“I’d say nature and I are on good terms,” Odette snorts, a tempting idea growing in her mind like a weed. Instantly, like a flip of a switch, her amused smirk sharpens into a shrewd grin and her velvety tone shifts to an animated cadence, “In fact, I’m a gardening expert!” She really only knows the basics, not that she’ll tell her customer that. Pointing at his plant, she innocently offers, “Your seedling looks pretty cool. Definitely the best looking of the bunch. If you want a pro tip, I’d be happy to show you the ropes... for a small fee, of course.

With any luck, the young entrepreneur may profit from this, after all.

This happened to be Kim's favorite type of errand. Anything relating to plant-life, herbology and nature always gave him some excitement. It came as no surprise that he'd gotten straight O's in Herbology as it was his favorite class too. After the widespread fiery destruction that had taken place outside of Hogsmeade and the infestation of the 'bloody mushrooms', it was high time to repopulate the world with new seedlings. But Kim was not someone who could do something like that.

At least not without professional help involved. It came as a nice surprise when he'd discovered a new errand designed to do exactly what he'd been wanting to do all this time. But there were quite a few students who liked Herbology and Kim wasn't sure if they would all jump at this particular chance. To repopulate the plant-life and gain some points for their House too. He didn't want to get caught in a crowd but at the same time didn't want all of the seedlings to be gone.

So he'd opted to head over fifteen minutes after the errand had officially started. Enough time for the majority of students to have already gotten their seedlings and early enough so there would still be a lot left for him to pick up too. Kim's plan worked out perfectly and he smiled, looking around at the optional seeds placed out for planting everywhere. Picking up a huge amount of them, he stored them inside a cloth bag he had brought with him and headed out to the grounds.

He'd start there and work his way outward after each seedling planted. If too many people were there at the time, he'd go to another place. Thankfully, when Kim got out onto the grounds, there weren't many people around although he DID see a bunch of freshly dug dirt. So lots of students had been here before. It wasn't surprising to him. This was the closest to Hogwarts castle. Many were lazy and didn't want to go far from where they were now, which was understandable.

Kim glanced around and spotted a familiar face not far from where he was.

Aodhan. He hadn't seen his roommate in awhile but then Aodhan was a first year and was bound to be busy. Kim remembered what his first year had been like and couldn't help but smile. Aodhan was currently talking to a girl he didn't recognize who looked young, probably another first year. He hesitated, not exactly the type of person who tended to approach and socialize with others, but at the same time it was his roommate. Maybe it wouldn't be bad to go over and introduce himself.

He hadn't really interacted much with the new brood and it was already going to be the start of a new year soon. Like his parents had stated all those years ago, school was for making connections you could use for the rest of your life. So Kim walked over to where Aodhan and Odette were and smiled at them. "Yo." He called out to them, giving his trademark greeting to two younger ones. Kibō was with him as usual but was exploring on his own at the time and not present now.

"I'm Kim. Aodhan's roommate. Is this the first area you're planting them in? Or have you already planted some elsewhere too?" Kim asked, curious. They were not required to plant more than one seedling but they also weren't restricted to just doing one. "It looks like quite a lot of people have already planted some here. Maybe I will go elsewhere to plant some. Unless I can find a space that doesn't have a lot nearby." Kim remarked.

"You know, it's not good to plant so many together." He said. "Their roots might get tangled or they might grow into eachother."

This kind of thing happened sometimes when too many seedlings were planted together. "Do you intend on planting more elsewhere after you're done here?" Kim asked the two of them, curious. "The greenhouse, Great Lake and campgrounds could use more too I bet. Which do you think have the least amount of people there now?" The place with the least amount of people was where he wanted to go next after this. To avoid all the chatty crowds.

Really, the girl he chose to approach seemed normal. At first.

Her initial demeanor was vastly different from the one she adjusted into, to a point that Aodhan couldn't even pretend he missed it, his brow raising in a show of blatant confusion. And with the type of person he was, the youth wasn't afraid to confront her on the matter. He didn't get into the house of Gryffindor for nothing.

But then she complemented Palmer, momentarily forcing his mouth shut while his budding ego grew to compensate. No doubt a wonderful example for the greenery surrounding them.

Yeah, he knew he picked an awesome plant. He couldn't possibly choose anything less than subpar, and she was correct to make that observation. The thought caused him to grin a toothy grin, eyes twinkling with satisfaction as his arms crossed over his chest.

However.

Aodhan, fortunately, was not entirely stupid. She was still odd. Her words were welcoming, flattering, filled to the brim with exuberance all to offset her ominous ending request. A fee... for a planting errand of all things. Perhaps if he wasn't vaguely familiar with her methods, mainly by employing them himself prior to Hogwarts, he'd have fallen for the trick. He most definitely won't fall for it.

Then again, Aodhan was a liar. Such a liar that he couldn't possibly fight the curiosity slowly trying to guide him along, pushing him to make a decision he knew would be horrible in hindsight. After all, was she only asking him for money? Or did she want information? Perhaps she needed something a bit more unorthodox, like a prank that would get her in trouble should she do it herself. Curious. He was so curious.

It was a great day to not be a cat.

"Yeah? Go on then, scammer, or whatever you're called. Name your price," he stated, a smile still present on his features, though it held a roguish tinge. Hopefully, she wouldn't disappoint him.

Sadly, he didn't get to properly focus on her response should there have been one, for they were interrupted by the appearance of a familiar face. One that had Aodhan's energy practically skyrocketing upon acknowledging exactly who it was.

"Aoi! You're here!" he shouted happily, his expression easily transforming into one of childish joy. In the rush of excitement, he took a few steps to increase his proximity with the older student, infiltrating Kim's personal space without a care in the world. What a lucky day it was, to catch his senior despite their contrasting timetables. Perhaps this errand wasn't so bad after all.

... Alas, the youth could feel himself deflate as Kim's attention went towards the brunette he'd been speaking with. Then there was a whole lot of noise about plants, and space for the plants and blah blah—

"Do you intend on planting more elsewhere after you're done here? The greenhouse, Great Lake and campgrounds could use more too I bet. Which do you think have the least amount of people there now?"

"Yeah, I plan to! I mean, if you're going to, then I'm going to!" he responded almost instantly, "I say the lake is a good spot. The greenhouse is a super obvious choice, so tons of people there I bet, and the campgrounds are for losers 'cause I said so."

He spoke while completely ignoring the keywords of the suggestion: after they were done, which he most definitely did not fit the criteria for. Out of the three, he was the one behind the most on his task, his poorly dug hole a testimony to this fact. It laid quietly in the background, temporarily forgotten and waiting to embarrass him at any given moment.

Never in her life has Odette been called something as insulting as a scammer. Greedy prat? Sure! Enormous butthead? Absolutely! Ironically called an opportunistic witch from an unknowing muggle? All the time! Mock her character all you like, but she draws the line at slandering her business ethics! Her father always taught her that transparency and a hint of exaggeration are two of the most vital pillars of running a successful business. She’d never stoop so low as to-to…she can’t even say the word! It’s incomprehensible in her mind.

“Sc-scammer? It’s not like I’m some creepy hag from Knockturn Alley! I’m just a witch with a green thumb and a proposition.” Odette huffs, crossing her arms indignantly, “If I were a conwoman, you’d already be short five Galleons and wrist deep planting my seeds without even realizing.”

Taking a breath to steady herself, Odette tries to ignore the offense unknowingly shot against her. Despite Fluffy-haired Boy’s suspicion painting clear across his face, he’s still curious enough to hear her out first. So long as there’s even a sliver of interest in his eyes, she can deal with a little apprehension. After all, she’s a businesswoman.

Before Odette can try and turn things around, her customer perks up and boisterously greets the newcomer heading their way. Sort of like how the golden retriever her childhood friend, Evereley, has tends to run headfirst into the door whenever someone knocks. The comparison has her nose twitching in suppressed laughter and a fond smile tugging at her lips.

Though, her amusement quickly fades as Odette’s gaze shifts to the older boy, blue eyes trailing up…and up…and up. With the way he towers over her on the ground, she can’t help but feel like a houself. Perhaps she should start squatting down whenever she needs to speak to one of them in the library.

“I’m Odette,” she smiles easily to Kim, brushing soil off her palms. “Fluf– Aodhan’s, um— gardening contractor. I’ve only planted here so far. Why?”

Odette’s stomach twists as she listens to Kim explain the issue of roots tangling. Eyeing her three cute little mounds of dirt, she feels her ears flush with heat while wondering if hers are too close together. A true gardening expert would know. Maybe Aodhan–Fluffy-haired Boy, as she came to find out his name— was right in calling her a scammer. Next to someone with actual horticulture knowledge, all she has is a trowel and a good pitch. Still, a good businesswoman doesn’t let something like this throw her off—she simply…pivots.

“Well,” she says, brushing the dirt off her knees while standing up and pointedly ignoring the fact that she barely comes up to Kim’s shoulder to spare her dignity. “It’ll be good having Kim’s gardening expertise around.”

Clasping her hands behind her back and rocking on her heels, her blue eyes flicker to Aodhan with a thoughtful glint. “Still interested in my help planting the lil guy? Don’t worry, I’m waiving the fee. Your common room password will do just fine.”

Kim gave Aodhan a little smile upon his enthusiastic greeting and inclined his head a little. "Han." He said, greeting his roommate. Kim turned his attention to Odette for a time and then returned it back to Aodhan again as the latter spoke. "We should go to the Lake then." He said as Aodhan had said he'd be going there if he was. Kim noticed a poorly dug hole a short distance away from them, one where a lovely plant still inside its pot was sitting beside it. He wondered if the one who had taken it had just left it there. He glanced around the area to see if anyone was coming back for it but it didn't seem as if the owner of the seedling was there anymore. What a sad day for the plant.

Kim nodded as Odette introduced herself and raised a brow at her words about being Aodhan's 'gardening contractor' with a smile playing along the corners of his lips. "Gardening contractor? I'm sure that has a story behind it!" Kim said with a little smirk. "Just wondering if you knew which place was less populated and also if there was an area that didn't have as many seedlings. I don't want to plant more in a place that already has a ton of plants." Kim explained to Odette. He let his eyes flicker over Odette and over to Aodhan again as the former got to her feet, speaking about it being nice that his expertise could help them plant their seedlings.

"I'm no expert but I frequent the greenhouses all the time and take care of the plants inside. I've also helped Herbology professors out throughout the years from time to time." Kim said with a little shrug of his shoulders. Odette's next words made him raise a brow. "You're having trouble planting yours?" He asked Aodhan, glancing back over at him. "I can help you out too." Kim told him. He wondered if Aodhan hadn't even started planting yet like him or if he'd started but didn't know how to finish. Wait. Could Aodhan's seedling be the one that he'd originally thought had been abandoned by whoever had taken it? It couldn't be his, could it???

"Still interested in my help planting the lil guy? Don’t worry, I’m waiving the fee. Your common room password will do just fine."

Ah, right. He was originally asking for her help, wasn't he?

He was going to respond to her, because of course he didn't completely forget about her existence or anything like that. Most of the time, he wasn't that forgetful. Half of the time. Some of the time? Regardless, yes, he fully intended on responding to her. However—

"You're having trouble planting yours? I can help you out too."

That was not good. Not at all.

For once, Aodhan could practically feel the panic settling in, cheeks and ears dusted a light shade of pink as he brainstormed how to get out of this predicament. He simply couldn't have Kim, of all people, thinking he was incompetent. He was supposed to be cool and amazing, someone that could knock anyone else off their feet. This situation was utterly unacceptable.

"Trouble? You think I ever have trouble with stuff? You're funny, Aoi! That's what I like about you. Can you just, uh, give us one second?" he rambled before surging forward, grabbing hold of the girl's arm and dragging her a small distance away. It was just enough for them to not be heard should they lower their voices; truly perfect for what he planned to do.

First, he abruptly stopped walking and released his hold on the appendage, his dark brown eyes unflinchingly meeting her pale blue ones. Next, he used a lone thumb to gesture towards where the older Gryffindor was left behind.

"I like him," he whispered, face still carrying hints of red despite the confidence in his tone, "And this whole plant thing? Kinda killing my vibe. Now, I dunno what you need the common room password for. I don't even care that much either, but if you really want it, help me out here?"

He then took a moment to adjust his facial expression, trying to muster up the most pathetic, puppy-like appearance he could. His eyes curved downwards, his bottom lip jutted out, and he even made it quiver to really sell the act. The look certainly did not work on everyone, but it still carried a 50/50 chance of success. His past test subjects (read: his parents) provided enough data to back up such a claim.

"Please? I can even get you the Slytherin password—no, the Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff passwords too if I try hard enough"—he wasn't quite sure what house she was part of—"Seriously, I know people. Just help me look good, okay?"

And just like that, Aodhan immediately turned back around, puppy eyes evaporating like water in summer heat. He proceeded to smile sheepishly in Kim's direction, feigning embarrassment for the random interruption.

"Sorry, Aoi! Do you think you can grab the potted plant over there? Rest it in a better spot? We just need another minute or so, promise," he called out, pointing at his seedling affectionately named "Palmer," left near his old disgrace of a dirt hole. He maintained this energetic and sunny disposition for approximately... 5 seconds before facing the brunette at his side once more. There was expectation swimming in his gaze. "Well?"
