THE SORTING CEREMONY
Hogwarts was bigger than Ginny had expected. Already she had met a couple people and boated over the lake that looked like the night sky but water. But now she was so, SO nervous. "Drarry, Ginny," called the headmaster. She walked up, almost tripped up, and sat on the stool. The hat almost slipped down her head as it got put on.
"Nervous, are you," the hat asked. Her heart thumped harder and harder like it was going to jump on of her chest. "I see you are determined to do everything and will do everything you can while you are here like a daredevil. You have the qualities to be.....,"
Ginny waited and waited, until she heard a deep breath from the hat. "GRYFFINDOR!"
Cheers erupted from the Gryffindor table, including her brother who cheered the loudest. Her nerves slid from her chest as she walked down to the table, sitting with the other first years from Gryffindor. As she sat down, the smile on her face was as big as the sun. She watched and cheered for the rest of the ceremony.

| -- | Carina didn't know what to expect as she sat on the plain looking chair. Her mom hadn't thought about the house she would soon end up in. Mia, Julian and Elise had been in Ravenclaw, Gryffindor and Hufflepuff respectively years ago. Stories of the three houses had given her a wonderful impression of Hogwarts. 'Slytherin!' Carina's heart skipped a beat. Knowing she would be telling stories of Slytherins to her mom and Elise later on, she couldn't help but smile. She could feel students from the Slytherin table sizing her up as if they were trying to imagine another new first year taking up their seat from the common room in the years to come. The green lined robes, accompanied by elegant postures gave an air of confidence from the Slytherin table. She examined them, clever glances, quiet confidence, and the calm intensity makes her realise that it's not all dark and broody, but strategic and united. Making her way over, hundreds of thoughts ran over her head. What will mother say? Will Elise be cool about it? Most importantly, Julian. Will Julian be cheering for her from wherever he is? Is Julian's applause hidden among the cheers? She thought she had caught a faint cheer of her father's voice from the back of the hall. Or probably just a thought. |

Thea nervously approached the Sorting Hat. Having only heard of Ilvermorny from her cousins she didn't know what to expect from Hogwarts. She already felt out of place with her American accent and felt like everyone could see right through her; a fake Hogwarts student.
The Sorting Hat "hmm"-d at her and she let out a shaky breath.
"You have left your friends and community across the ocean," the Hat remarked. "This would take a lot of courage from one so young. Do you feel courageous, Thea Thorne?"
"I- I'm not sure..." she pauses. "I belong here."
"Hmm, perhaps that is what makes you brave, Miss Thorne," the Hat replied.
"Better be GRYFFINDOR!" the Sorting Hat exclaimed loud enough for the Great Hall to hear.
Cheers from a table decked in black cloaks, lined with red and accented with gold stood up and cheered as she stumbled her way over. The energy of the table was exhilarating. Thea quietly took a seat as the next student was sorted. She attempted to take calming breaths as she scanned the people around her. The people at this table seemed to exude the confidence of knowing oneself deeply and being unashamed about it.
She looked at the Sorting Hat in puzzlement. How? she thought to herself. How can someone like me, who doesn't have a clue who they are, be sorted into a house like this?

Ella figeted with her bracelet unconciously as she stepped up to the front of the hall. Unlike most students, she had one house in mind and she was praying to be sorted into that house. Not that it was very likely, of course, no one in her family has been sorted into Slytherin for generations.
Ella placed the Hat onto her head and noticed that she was shaking slightly. The Hat was silent for a moment, puzzling over the wave of thoughts that had just entered Ella's mind.
"Mmmm," The Hat mused. "A tricky one, I see. Plenty of wisdom, yes. Ravenclaw would be a good house for you." Ella was paralysed. No, no, please no She silently prayed.
"Not Ravenclaw? Well, I see your loyalty to your family, and, soon, school. Would Hufflepuff be a good choice for you? No, no." The Hat seemed to be talking to itself now. Ella was reminded of the day she received a wand.
Slytherin, Slytherin, please Ella repeated the words in her head. "Slytherin? Are you sure you wouldn't like Gryffindor? I see it in your blood..." Ella knew this moment would come. Both her parents had been in Gryffindor. She wondered what they would say if they knew of her secret wish.
"Yes, I made my choice." Ella waited with bated breath. "Slytherin!"
Ella almost let out a cheer as she estatically handed the Sorting Hat to the earby professor. She dazedly grinned at a table of cheering green cloaks. She bounced to her new table, her new house.

Nova spun her wand around her fingers. She had no clue where she would go. Her family’s houses… they were all over the place, there was no alignment… She sighed.
Most of her family members were Hufflepuff, but her grandmother was Slytherin. She had never met her, and she wasn’t exactly talked fondly of in the family. There were a few Ravenclaws, and the occasional Gryffindor, but… She had no clue-
“Skelton, Nova!”
Well, crap.
She stepped up towards the stool slowly, sitting down, but hesitant to put the hat on her head, mainly due to how filthy it looked, and partially because she was scared.
“Hm…”
“I- you can talk??? What-“
“Yes, yes, I can talk, but what house…”
The girl raised an eyebrow with a grin.
“Isn’t that your job?”
“Annoying. Noted. You seem very determined, but have no ambitions exactly. Loyal, but not a hard worker. Smart, but you don’t have the motivation. You have nerve, but no-“
“Is this a therapy session, or are you gonna sort me?”
The two of them went silent for a few moments.
“Then I suppose you must be… SLYTHERIN!”
The girl froze up. She’d heard horror stories about Slytherins, but blindly walked over to the table anyways.
Welp, them’s the breaks…

The Sorting Hat rested like a shadowy crown on its stool—worn, sagging, nearly invisible if you didn't know it. Phoenix Harlow did. Everyone did. But as she stood among the first-years, its presence was more than myth.

Her name was called.
"Harlow, Phoenix"
The hum of voices was subdued as the syllables echoed down the hall. She didn't flinch, didn't budge—merely walked on with the silence of one used to placing jitters behind a mask of exactness.
Heads turned to see after her, a few out of curiosity, a few not. She paid them all no mind, instead concentrating on the hat as she made her way to it, as though it'd change its mind before she'd sat.
She climbed the few stairs, sat, and the moment the hat was placed upon her head—
Silence.
A silence, close and thick, built in the air between her ears.
"Well now… what do we have here?"
Its voice wasn't cruel. It was slow, and old, and way too familiar.
"Quiet on the outside, but quite the tempest beneath."
Phoenix said nothing. Words weren't her thing—least of all to something digging around inside her head.
You're cautious," it continued. "Not a bad thing. You don't trust easily. That's not bad, either. But you do have… potential."
Silence.
"You're clever. You learn quick, adapt easily. Ravenclaw would be for you… but you want more. Not compliments. Not cleverness. Control."
Phoenix's own breath caught the smallest part.
"Power. No… you have to be safe again. To mark your own territory, in your own terms." The hat murmured now. "You believe that's something you'll have to struggle for."
And then, considering now:
"There's fear in you. The old sort. You carry it as a burden—because you never let go of it."
The silence once more was a suspended breath at cliff's edge.
"You don't think you're brave," whispered the hat, murmurs. "But you are. Braver than you know. Better place you into… GRYFFINDOR!"
The Great Hall burst of sound was restored.
Phoenix blinked, half in confusion and half in defiance. Gryffindor? She'd not been expecting that. She'd prepared for Ravenclaw—or nothing at all. But this.
She rose. Her legs took her before she knew what she was doing, landing her on the red and gold-tinged table. She didn't smile. Didn't speak. She slipped into a gap at the far end of the bench, just not touching the next person, letting the commotion move past her.
Her jaw clenched. Her heart thudded.
Deep in her chest, something tiny stirred— uncertain, shaky… but warm.

Tacitus stood near the back of the group of students, fidgeting nervously with the sleeves of his slightly oversized robes. We have to be sorted into houses? Tacitus wondered, confused. Oh no, I guess this will be so much different that my Muggle school back home-
Tacitus' thoughts are cut off by one of the professors calling "Thanatos, Tacitus." Nervously he weaved through the crowd of other jittering Firstyears until he reached the front. Ahead of him was a large stage where all the professors were seated, and on the front, a small stool. He assumed that was where he was supposed to go and nervously walked up to the stage. As he sat down on the stool, wondering what would happen, one of the professors came up to him and placed an older looking hat on his head. He sat in silence for a bit, nervously bouncing his legs up and down as he looked around the hall. After a couple more seconds he realised his nerves had been zoning out a slightly quieter voice, a voice that seemed to be coming from the Hat itself.
"You're smart, that's for sure, but don't apply yourself... Not the bravest, but bravery is not always outwardly visible, not ambitious, but I see a side to you that is indeed cunning..."
What are they saying? Tacitus wondered, and the voice, surprising Tacitus so much he nearly fell off of the stool he was perched on.
"I am simply analysing you... Oh, but you're deadly loyal to those close to you. You're an interesting one, aren't you? I suppose it will have to be-"
"HUFFLEPUFF! The hat shouts out, causing cheers from the Hufflepuff table and he is ushered to sit down. He had no idea what 'Hufflepuff' really meant, but he knew being loyal was good, so even though he was sat in between a bunch of strangers and was still quite nervous, he felt a small sense of pride glowing in his chest too.

Magnolia felt like a packed sardine, the way that all of the first years clumped together. It was at least a small blessing that it didn't smell like such... but she held her breath all the same as the grand doors of the Great Hall were pushed open before her.
As soon as her eyes could register everything, Magnolia let out a sharp gasp; the Great Hall certainly lived up to its name, with its size and the four long, color-coded tables where eager students sat watching. She only glanced at the armor-clad Headmaster for a moment, feeling too intimidated by his stature, even though all he was doing at the moment was greeting every student. You know, like a headmaster would. Still intimidating, though.
The surface of the tables themselves was almost impossible to see, with food piled high and delicious smells wafting about and even making Maggie's stomach let out a low grumble. She would definitely indulge in some food later... and at least the food was something recognizable to Magnolia's non-magical life experience.
She observed with wide eyes as the portraits and paintings on the walls moved. Yeah, the people in the portraits were freaking moving. They were chatting amongst each other like this was an everyday thing, to be a painting and to be sentient. She had heard from a staff member before she arrived that no technology could work on campus grounds, so there was no way that these were just painting-like TVs. Magnolia felt her body stiffen as she was caught staring at one of the portraits, the subject of which was waving at her joyfully. Magnolia could only manage to smile lopsidedly before forcing her eyes forward.
Magnolia startled as the door slammed behind the herd of first years, and the Headmaster who greeted them all soon took his place at the head of the room, greeting them all once again with a magical, booming voice. And soon he was joined by another voice... coming from a... a... a hat. A freaking hat. ...Should she really be surprised at this point? And then it sang. Magnolia was still a bit flabbergasted as her fellow students applauded, and then began the long, nerve-wracking process of being sorted.
Magnolia had practically zoned out, her anxiety of finding out where she belongs eating at her. She didn't even feel like she belonged in the magical world in the first place, let alone a magical house in a magical school. Her nervous trance was only broken by the calling of her name, and while receiving a soft smile from the Headmaster, the sentient tattered hat was placed upon her head, the hat humming with thought. She shivered slightly as she sat on the stool, nervous about the incoming judgment.
"Ahhh.... your head is clouded with doubt... but I most certainly am not, after swimming in your head." Magnolia looked up, looking at the hat's brim as if it was its eyes. "Mmm... yes, not doubt indeed. Your patience and trustworthiness means, of course, you are destined to be in HUFFLEPUFF!"
An excited roar erupted from a nearby table: the Hufflepuff table. Magnolia smiled sheepishly as she slid off the stool, scurrying over to the Hufflepuff table and watching as some students parted to make space for her to sit down. Exclamations of congratulations surrounded her, and she bashfully huffed out her thanks, grinning widely as she felt her cheeks flush.
Maybe she did belong here...

Eli shuffled forward in the line, surrounded by the hushed whispers of the students already sat at tables and the rustling brush of cloaks and robes. Her eyes continued to flick up in amazement to the enchanted sky above them all. She'd grown up on the stories of Hogwarts from her father but it was a whole new thing entirely to experience it for herself.
And for the first time she was nervous about what house she was going to be sorted in. Her father had spoken highly of Ravenclaw's high towers and reading nooks. She knew how proud he would be of her if she were sorted into the same house but it just... she didn't know if it was for her at all. Of course she liked learning and of course she was excited to get to start her lessons; but something in her heart just... told her differently.
Another name called and another student shuffled past, hurrying up to the stool and the hat. ("GRYFFINDOR!" still echoed against the walls as they were ushered towards their new table just as quick.")
"Goldhorn, Eli!"
She was up.
The hat, too big for her head, dropped right over her eyes and she swallowed past the sudden lump of nerves that had settled in her throat. What if the Hat couldn't sort her at all?
"Well, well, what have we here," whispered in her ear and she was thankful that no one else could hear what the hat had to say except for her. "Ah! An adventurer this one, eh? You'd do well in red and gold, young one. Yes, yes you would. But perhaps there is something better suited for you, hm?"
Another pause: only a second or two really but for Eli it felt like an eternity that she sat there awaiting her fate. "I see your perseverance and your hard work. Eager aren't you? No, no, I know just where to put you."
"HUFFLEPUFF!" rang across the room and Eli tried not to stumble over her own feet as she hurried towards the cheering table, squeezing herself in among the other students to take her seat and releasing a sigh of relief she hadn't even realized she'd been holding onto. Someone patted her on the back and a few others welcomed her to the House and she grinned to the others- nervous and a little anxious but no less excited to finally get to start this new step of her life.

Anemoi took her seat in the smooth wooden chair, glancing down at her lap instead of out over the crowd. She hated being the center of attention like this, hated stages. Mercifully, the hat seemed to sense this and it started talking immediately.
“Ahh child, you want accomplishment but not spotlight… you mask your pride. And you are brave, but not the type to want adventure… not right for Gryffindor…”
Anemoi gave a small nod at the hat’s words. She liked adventure, at least in her novels… but she didn’t want trouble, and the Gryffindors and Slytherins had been glaring at each other all day. The serpent house was next, in the list the headmaster had given. She tried not to fidget with her robes.
“Intelligent but not cunning. You wouldn’t do well with tricks… absolutely too honest… Couldn’t be Slytherin.”
Good. The only houses left were Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff. The Hufflepuffs seemed sweet. She could see herself liking that house. And Ravenclaw, well— The Hat spoke again, cutting off her thoughts.
“I see…” It hummed “You love justice, and very loyal, helpful to any in need… Perhaps a Hufflepuff?” Anemoi started to smile, but the ceremony wasn’t finished.
“You are not patient, child. No you will not go to Hufflepuff; Although with those pupils you could get along… Your toil has been over books and thoughts, not solid things…Wise for one so young… You came to this place because you want to know more about magic and about yourself.”
The hat was right of course. There was only one house left and Anemoi breathed a sigh of relief as it was announced.
“A student dedicated to knowledge and exploration… Curious and clever. Yes, you, Anemoi, will go to…
Ravenclaw!”
