Adlai nodded as she twisted the extra fabric of her hijab around her finger.
“We’re both still kids. We don’t know everything but we’re old enough to understand how most things work. It’ll only get more complicated, especially after we’re able to use magic outside of the school legally.” Adlai said thinking of if her parents would even want her to use magic around them.

“Anyway...things have gotten way to heavy. Changing the topic, I hear that people are already starting to think of what house their going to be in!
I’m thinking I’ll end up in Ravenclaw since my family keeps saying that I’ve particularly studious and wise for my age, but at the same time I’m starting to have second thoughts and are leaning towards Hufflepuff. What about you? What house do you think you’ll be in?” Adlai asked her brown eyes lighting up.

The Hogwarts houses had been a fascination of hers ever since she heard about them about three hours ago. She knew the basics, like how Gryffindor was for the brave, Ravenclaw was for the wise, Hufflepuff was for the kind, and Slytherin for the cunning.
On top of that she’s also over heard the many great accomplishments of Gryffindor. Mostly about a particular lighting scared someone who made head lines of the newest addition of The Daily Prophet

"Ravenclaw?" Leah wondered aloud. "That would be an awesome house to be in. But my siblings said I'd be in Hufflepuff, and I kind of agree. I love making friends, and I try to be optimistic, so I would be surprised if I was anywhere else."

Leah suddenly realised that Adlai might not know much about the houses. "Did you know that Ravenclaws are supposed to be exceptionally imaginative, so are great inventors? And Slytherins set up the best businesses, because of their ambition and resourcefulness? Hufflepuff are good judges, because they're fair and hardworking, and Gryffindors make the bravest of Aurors."

She paused before continuing.

"For example, there's Harry Potter," she whispered conspirationally, as if discussing a secret. "He killed the worst, most awful wizard ever without even actually killing him! Have you heard much about him?"

Leah had. Her siblings practically idolised him - completely ignoring all those articles in the press - to the point that Leah sometimes kind of hated the famous man. But here, now, discussing him with Adlai?

He did seem like a pretty cool topic to discuss.

"He was a Gryffindor," she said. "I used to think he was just a bedtime story, but it turns out he's real! He was like you: he didn't know about magic until he got a letter!"

“I’ve heard about him!” Adlai exclaimed jumping in her seat. “I can’t even fathom what it must have been like for him. I could have been terrified.” She said. Recalling everything she heard. How an evil wizard wanted to rid the world of him and those called “muck bloods” how he craved more and more power. And how the sound of his name could send panic throughout the entirety of the magic world.

“But of course he’d have to be brave, after all he was in mighty Gryffindor!”
Adlai smiled at Leah. “It’s a shame we can’t attend school with him though, I’m sure it would have been much more exciting for all of us. Ah well, time flies by so fast.”
And as if on cue the trains whistle thundered as it entered a tunnel. They were nearly to Hogwarts.
Adlai felt her heart leap from her chest. She began to dig through her trunk for one of her robes.

“Oh I can’t wait. I’m sure I’ll have lots to write to my parents about though I’m sure they won’t believe me. It must be fun for you though Leah, having magic in the family. If my family on my mothers side knew they’d flip!”

"I know, right?" she said. "He was supposed to be an awesome Seeker, and they did so many cool things, like a tournament between schools! Then again, they had a really strict teacher in fifth year, and she sounded tyrannical."

Like Adlai, Leah extracted her school robes from her bag. She almost got her own new robes, but then her mother had magically stitched and repaired her older siblings' clothes for her. While it thrilled her to inherit something with so many memories, she kind of wished she got something just for her. Something which hadn't been passed down.

"You're so lucky to have your own clothes. Almost everything I own was passed down from my siblings. And they stink, in my opinion. I mean, Mum washed the clothes, but I can still detect the ghost of their scents here. Ew."

She winked to indicate that she was only joking, and slipped the robes over her shirt. Many people had advised her to just wear her uniform (minus the obvious cloak and robes) so that it would be easier to change.

"Do you want me to leave for a minute so you can change?" she asked nervously. "I don't really know if Muggle boundaries are the same as Wizarding ones, or..."

Adlai looked up at Leah as she held her robes in her hands. “We’re both girls so I don’t see anything wrong with it. Besides we should be fine as long a the curtains are closed.” She said as she stood up to go and close the curtains. “That is if you don’t mind us changing together?” She asked.

“What’s funny to me is that if you were a boy you wouldn’t even be able to see my hair.” She giggled.
“Islam has quite the strange practices. Then again I still don’t understand it all. My mom still has a lot to teach me. She had me pack a miniature version of the Quran with all my things. My dad thought it was little extreme but my mom had her heart set on it, so of course it happened.”
Adlai sighed. “What are your parents like? I bet it must be fun having parents who can do magic, right?” Adlai asked.

She thought of how exciting it would have been for her if her parents could do magic. How her mother wouldn’t have to work as hard with magic there to assist and how much more fun sports would be with her dad if he was able to pitch a ball with a hint of magic behind it to send it flying yards away.

"Cool," Leah said, relieved. "We have similar boundaries, I think. Thank goodness. Yeah, I'm fine with changing in the same room, I guess."

"So you take this book wherever you live? I've never done anything so dedicated. I mean, I used to have a soft toy I took everywhere, but that's totally different." Now fully changed, she sat down again. "This is the year where I'll get to find out about so many other people's lives. I'm so excited to make new friends and find out about other people." Suddenly excited, she sat up. "Hey, do you want to be my first friend here?"

In answer to Adlai's question about her parents, Leah frowned. "I've never known life without magic. I guess it does make some things easier... But my mum has just as many troubles as my dad, and he's a Muggle.

My siblings can do magic outside of school too, now. We can't - we're too young."

Leah's siblings hadn't stopped Apparating as soon as they were of age, and Leah could not have been more jealous. Why couldn't she be lazy and pop around the house like she was made of Floo powder? All the same, using the Floo network was way easier than driving a car or something.

“Wherever I go the Quran follows. The word of Allah is important for me to know. I’m also required to pray five times a day and before that I have to wash my feet.” Adlai said as she finished getting dressed. Her hijab was lop sided thus bits and pieces of her long brown hair poked out.
“I’d love to be your friend!” Adlai beamed her slim eyes widening.

“So magic users and non magic users can get married?” Adlai asked in Curiosity. She had much to learn about people just like Leah. “What else can magic users and non magic users do together?”
Adlai slipped off her hijab revealing a plan black base where she had stuffed all of her hair. Taking the pin out of the fabric she wrapped the clothe around her heard. Looking at her reflection in the window to make sure everything looked correct before putting the pin back in and securing it.
“Oh and magical creatures! Do you know anything about them? I haven’t been able to crack open Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them yet. It sounds amazing though. I hope I’m able to see some magical creatures this year, I’d love to tell my parents about them!”

"I think it's awesome to be in a community like that," Leah smiled. "Sure, I have the magical community, but you're in two! Do you have special festivals?"

Leah gave a cheer when Adlai said she would be her friend. "Even if we're in different houses, I hope we can meet again." she said sincerely.

She watched in fascination as Adlai adjusted her hijab, admiring how smooth her movements were. When she was younger, many of her friends who were Muslim had not worn a hijab, but some of them seemed to reach a general age where they would start - and Adlai seemed to be very good at it. Leah knew she wouldn't be able to put on a hijab so easily.

"Well, there's this law called the Statute of Secrecy," Leah explained. "It's super important. Because of it, we can't tell anyone about magic, unless they're a Muggleborn's parent or guardian or if they're married to a witch or wizard. So I guess you can do anything with someone non-magical, as long as they don't find out the truth."

"My siblings told me all about Fantastic Beasts!" Leah exclaimed. "Did you know they have Bowtruckles at Hogwarts, in the Forest? They're like little angry twigs that guard trees. And I heard a rumour that they have-" she lowered her voice and whispered "Thestrals somewhere on the grounds; and they're winged horses of death!"

“We really only have two festivals which are Eid al-Fitr which comes after Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, and then there Eid al-Adha which comes after Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca. I haven’t been able to go to Mecca yet though. My mom has!” She said recalling the pictures her mother had shown of her.
“Other holiday’s are Muharram, which is the new year, and Mawlid al-Nabi, which is the prophet Muhammad’s birthday.” Adlai explained.

“Us being in the same house would be wonderful! Even if we don’t end up in the same house I’m sure we’ll see each other. If not I could...owl you? Is that how you message people at Hogwarts?” She asked.

“That’s pretty cool how witch’s and wizards could be anywhere at any time and we wouldn’t even know it. I wonder how many I could have met.” Adlai said pondering how many strangers who could have seen in her life time who could have been witch’s or wizards who were far more educated on the magical world than she was.

Adlai leaned forward to Leah when she began to talk about the magical creatures. “Why on earth would they let Thestrals be anywhere near the school campus that can’t possibly be safe for the students! Think of all the horrible injuries that could occur!” She cried flailing her around about just like her grandfather would.
“I have a deep respect for Hogwarts don’t take me wrong but having creatures of death around students is something I find unforgivable! If my parents knew of this they wouldn’t have even let me come here!”

"Yeah, we usually send owls, but we can talk to each other in the common room if we're in the same house, or if we meet in the Hall or the corridors or-" Leah cut herself off because of how excited she had made herself.

"And don't worry about the Thestrals, they should be trained or something if they're at Hogwarts. In fact -"

Again, Leah was cut off, but this time by the train whistling. "I think we're going to arrive soon."

She stood up to take her luggage down from the rack and check that she hadn't lost anything during the journey. No - there were her spare robes, her Muggle clothes (in case of emergency), her new wand, her books and supplies, and the quill, ink, and reams of paper for homework and letters home.

"I wish we could use pens at Hogwarts," Leah sighed. "They were really useful in primary school, and don't require us to carry all this ink."

She held up a pot of ink to demonstrate, the dark liquid swishing about with the movement. As she put it away, she noticed another small box at the back, one she definitely had not packed. Opening it, she found a small sketch pad and some pencils. She beamed, wondering who had left it there, and hoped she wouldn't lose this one as well.
