The lake was calm and the air was chilled on the morning after the Spring Soirée. A fog settled on the water and over the rolling hillside leading up to the the castle. Dennis was alone, unsure whether the quiet was helpful or just driving him further into some uncomfortable thoughts. Spring break was tomorrow and he needed to figure himself out or he’d slowly lose his mind over the course of the two week vacation. Scenes from the ball continued to replay over and over in his mind. It all came back to one girl, Meyra Lancaster. Where did any of this come from?
Dennis sat on a large boulder protruding out of the sandy shore. He closed his eyes to think back over the year, trying with all his might to understand what happened last night. There was France, another moment he hadn’t fully processed, but he had the time now. He realized only now, the look in her eyes then gave him similar feelings as he had now. Then there was quidditch, he loved cheering her own at her quidditch match even despite the outcome. He even made a banner for her. And finally all the way back to the escape room and watching her deftly conquer every puzzle and challenge thrown at her. Exactly when, though did he start feeling this way?
He sighed and looked around, still no one in sight. He tucked his knees under his chin and wrapped his arms around them. He had nothing to do but think and stare at the fog as it hovered over the lapping shoreline. He wore his faithful Ravenclaw sweeter and gray jeans, his hair as stylishly messy as usual.
No matter how far back he went, he always found his thoughts meandering back to the ball. The dance. The kiss. The touch. It made his heart feel light and his stomach tight. Subconsciously he placed a hand over the spot where Meyra had kissed him, his green emerald eyes wavering and now looking at his tennis shoes. Did…he like like his friend? Was that ok? Even that admission, for a time seemed to relieve his burdens in an instant. No. That wasn’t ok at all. He had a great thing with Meyra and Raizel. Why ruin that over some funny feelings? Would it ruin things or would trying to run away ruin it?
Dennis scoffed. Since when did he run away from anything. This was different though. Dennis lived life by accepting everything that came to him. However, no one made him feel the way she did. He admired her, wanted to be around her, thought of her, and was happiest beside her. “I like Meyra,” He whispered softly to himself, the confession lost in the motion of the lake. He was almost dumbfounded at the realization. Saying it out loud, it made sense. He felt this way because he had feelings for her. The gravity and the pull he felt toward her, did it need to be fought? She kissed him. That means…did she… He wouldn’t allow himself to think about what Meyra did or didn't think without talking to her. He needed to hear it from her but would he be brave enough to confront his feelings when he had more than just the fog to talk to?

@Dennis TumbertonAfter last night, and with the end of classes, Meyra needed to spend some time alone. When she woke up that morning she didn't felt like herself, it was if she had find her conscience in a body that didn't belong to her, in a life that was not her own. Everything was feeling unreal, her mind was a cacophony of questions, her heart a pool of unknown feeling, and her body felt sour and sick with the incoming full moon. Even if last night she had managed to disguise the uncomfortable symptoms, today it would be impossible not to see the curse that afflicted her every time the moon claimed the skies as its kingdom and graced the earth with all its light.
After changing into comfortable and warm brown leggings and a beige wool shirt, Meyra looked at her reflection in the tall mirror. Her eyes were a little red from lack of rest, her dark circles were visible and gave her face a heavy and tired appearance. It was the portrait that always greeted her every morning on days like that. To most, she simply looked like someone who was lacking a good night's sleep, but to her it was the image that always brought back memories of that night, the night that changed her life forever.
With a sight, Meyra picked her enchanted, brown leather satchel, and turned to leave her dorm.
She walked for some time through the grounds, her feet felt heavy and it was as if she was dragging herself as she crossed the dirt paths towards the great lake. It was a cold morning, the sun barely shone and the fog cast a eerie haze over the landscape, between the tall, old trees, hovering over the vegetation and flowers that were still waiting for the moment to bloom and grace the world with colour. While she carried herself, eyes locked on the ground at her feet, wandering close to the lake shore, her thoughts kept reminding her of last night.
Sometimes it felt like a dream, the moment she danced with him, what she thought she saw in his eyes, what she was sure was a reflection of how her own eyes looked at him. The moment they said that silent goodbye to each other, those mere seconds when their hands touched and silently asked them to stay...
Meyra sighed again, shaking her head slightly and pushing those thoughts away. A dream, what she thought she had felt in those moments... had been a dream. That had just been her mind and heart tricking her into believing it was something more, it had to be, it was what made the most sense. She had read so many romance novels that her mind led her to believe she could live in one. But she was not really a princess was she? No... she's the monster that usually hunts the princess, the main villain, not the heroine or the one who is supposed to meet... whatever-feelings-she-had-for-her-best-friend. Because that was the truth, wasn't it? She really liked him, but she was not supposed to.
When she finally looked up at the silent, dark waters, there was a spot of colour two paces away from her that caught her attention. She recognised him immediately, his usual mess of red locks and his loyal Ravenclaw blue shirt, being a vivid contrast with the monotony of the greys and dark greens that expanded on the horizon. The wind was gentle, a light breeze, but it brought her the now familiar scent that always welcomed her with comfort and, since last night, that unsettling feeling of butterflies in her stomach.
Meyra stopped in her tracks, suddenly unable to walk or breathe properly. What was she supposed to say to him? How was she supposed to act around him? She didn't like feeling that way around her best friend, all that awkwardness... She found herself wanting to erase everything that had happened, go back in time and make everything simple and natural again, the way it used to be. Before last night, she would have given him the brightest smile she could muster under the current circumstances and sat beside him without hesitation. Now, she could not even think of a word to say. What a coward Mey... she thought to herself.
She swallowed, her throat feeling dry, looked down and took a deep breath as she gathered her courage and tried to get her head in the right place. "Don't be a coward." She said to herself, before looking up again, towards the boy sitting on that large bolder, the boy who made her heart race every time her eyes met him. She decided to ignore that fact and finally walked towards him, slowly sitting down beside him. Her gaze kept fixed on the still, calming water, on the lingering blanket of mist that still hung over it, "Hi" She said in an airy voice, a whisper, while she hugged her knees, pressing them against her chest and almost hiding her face between them. She wanted to hide but at the same time, there was nothing she wanted more than to stay there, with him, and feel normal again.

Dennis sat alone for long moments with his realization of how he felt about Meyra. What exactly was he supposed to do with that information? Did he want to be her boyfriend? The thought of that made him uncomfortable but, in a good way? Weren’t couples icky? Did he want to be…icky? He let out a deep sigh and shook his head. He was clearly going mad. And there was France as intimate as that moment had been for Dennis: Meyra was a werewolf. He didn’t mind being friends with one, but what would it mean to date one? Did he have to be a werewolf too?
However, the silence was broken by movement out of the corner of his eye. A shadow? He wasn’t alone. Given the puffy wool of her sweater and the brown tones of her clothes, Dennis’ first thought was perhaps he was about to find out about the werewolf thing, his mind still stuck on France and their conversation. However, as the figure got closer all thoughts of feelings dissipated as he saw it was Meyra. He flashed her that same trademark Tumberton grin and was about to greet her when something in the way she walked and looked gave him pause. She seemed…troubled. She gave him a meek greeting and he patted the spot beside him.
“Meyra! I was just…thinking about you.” He said at first excited, but then lowered his voice toward the end. She curled up beside him but didn’t seem really in the mood for a chat. Instinctively he moved over so that their shoulders were touching lending her his body for support. He mirrored her posture and hugged his knees to his chest too. The shift meant that under their arms, their knuckles met. The electricity from the night before, the shock he might have expected was replaced by comfort. A gesture hidden under folded arms but one that felt warm.
Tonight was a full moon. Dennis realized and took time to consider what that might mean for his friend as they sat on their rock huddled together. “Hey,” he said softly at last, still watching as the waves of the lake seemed to mirror what he felt inside. He pursed his lips trying to find words for how he might comfort her. “I can’t imagine how you must be feeling. But if you ever want to talk about it, I’m always here to listen. I don’t mind sharing your burden even if it’s only a little bit…” The hand that was resting against hers would give her hand a little squeeze, a move he barely registered more concerned for his rather haggard looking friend.
He would wait for Meyra to respond, listening carefully to anything she might have to say. Realizing that he was at the lake with the girl he liked, he started scanning the lake surface, or what was visible of it anyway for any sign of movement. Trying to lighten the mood, Dennis said, “You know…I heard an older student…a much older student mind you…say that if we look carefully we will see the squid.”

@Dennis TumbertonThe smile Dennis had given her did little to make her feel any less nervous as she found him sitting there looking at the Great Lake. At first, she hadn't noticed his presence, thanks to the density of the fog and her mind wandering about everything that had happened, about everything that made her feel that sea of new sensations and emotions, trying to give a name to everything that her heart made her feel without showing any kind of mercy in the way it beat faster every time her mind was invaded by the memories she shared with the boy with the red and pleasantly disheveled hair. Her heart now seemed to want to escape from her chest, when memories and thoughts had materialized in her best friend, who was now quite real and inviting her to sit next to him.
It was in this state between a sudden desire to hide and to stay with him, that Meyra chose to silence her insecurities and decided, although trembling inside, to sit next to her best friend, on that large rock next to the shore of the calm, large lake with mysterious and deep waters. Her amber-green eyes had only gained the courage to look away from the beautiful landscape when Dennis had spoken his first words to her. Had he been thinking about her? What would he have thought of her? Meyra looked at him, calmly searching his face for the answers to the questions she didn't dare ask, "You..." She started, but the words caught in her throat. Would she have the courage to feel hope?, "You were thinking about me?" She asked him in a small voice full of doubts and uncertainties. Although the question escaped her lips, her gaze could not remain fixed on Dennis, as she was not sure if she wanted him to actually see the truth that her soul was showing there.
It was then that she felt him get close to her. Until then, Meyra hadn't realised how cold she felt, only when she felt the warmth projected by her friend's approach did she realise how comforting his touch was, making her instinctively lean against him as well. That's how they stood, shoulder to shoulder, a gesture of tenderness that was extended to the knuckles of their hands when both met under the arms that hugged the knees close to the chest.
In an unthinking gesture, as if they had a will of their own, Meyra couldn't stop her fingers from gently sliding over Dennis's hand. A light gesture, like the passing of a feather, but it made her heart beat in silent gratitude for his kindness. The words he addressed to her next were heard as she watched the fog dissipate, as if even time was a metaphor for that moment. As if his words were what was encouraging the very rays of sunshine to emerge.
Meyra gave a small sigh, which helped to ease the pressure that had built up in her chest. Recognizing that Dennis really cared about her and that it hadn't passed him by that that night she would have to face again what was her worst nightmare. He had been paying attention, and he was indeed there for her. What to do about this realization was something she couldn't find an answer to, because she was afraid of having to deal with her hopes being unfounded. "It's not the same every month, you know..." She began, saying in a calm whisper, her voice gaining strength as she spoke, "I just feel like... like I have the flu, you know? Tired, with little energy and a lot of desire to..." Another sigh as she cast a brief glance at Dennis, a small smile caressing her lips, "Sleep. Stay still in silence. That's all." She told him, looking again at the waters that now had a dark blue colour thanks to the rising sun light.
A slight pause was felt between the sound of his voice and the gentle lapping of the small waves along the shore. Pause in which Meyra closed her eyes for a few seconds, enjoying the silence that embraced her. Being able to talk to Dennis made her feel better, lighter and a little more confident. Confident enough to make her realise that things between them weren't as complicated as she had imagined. Her fears were slowly being assuaged by the tone in which Dennis had spoken and his presence so close to her. It was with this new feeling, much lighter and more confident that Meyra let her head rest lightly on Dennis' shoulder, with her eyes still closed, she let his scent envelop her like a hug that brought her good and happy memories.
Meyra couldn't stop herself from giving a soft, gentle laugh when Dennis told her about the squib. She opened her eyes and looked at him, "Do you think it's going to grab us? tossing us into the lake?" She joked, "Maybe it's just a nice friendly squib, and will only say hello?" She playfully asked smiling at her friend. She knew he was really trying to make her feel better, and she knew she was indeed lucky to have such an amazing friend like Dennis.

Dennis nodded as she asked if he was really thinking about her. There was no use questioning his feelings or turning back now. His mind was made up and he really would be a coward if he tried to deny the very thing he had just said. He offered her a more gentle smile, trying and failing to catch her eye. She seemed determined not to look at him. “Yeah. I was. You have been on my mind more and more lately,” he said gently.
He felt the brush of her hand and instinctively grabbed it, holding her cold hand in his. Every moment, every action, Dennis was building up the bravery to say what he needed, encouraged at each turn by her response. A very different experience than perhaps his friend was having! The hardest part for him, however, was hearing the difficulty the morning brought her. Now, he had a sister and a mother and knew sometimes girls have a rough few days, however they never looked the way Meyra did now. It must be so difficult. He wished more than anything that he could help her but knew that it was already futile.
Unable to give any advice to her plight, he let the silence provide the comfort. She rested her head on his shoulder and Dennis wrapped an arm around her shoulder, holding her tight. The only gesture he could think of and it felt right to hold her in his arms. He rest his head on hers. They sat there for a long moment, the fog slowly clearing as if symbolizing to Dennis things were finally becoming clearer. He realized what was going on and started to look for the fabled squid.
Meyra - the tough, beautiful, astounding, Meyra - was sometimes more innocent than what Dennis anticipated. She obviously didn’t know what the squid showing up now would mean. Guess she wasn’t as familiar with the Great Sayings as he was, even though they were his sayings anyway. Well, the stage was set. She was snuggled up with him and finally looking his way. Really he set it up, so it was now or…well there was no or. He chuckled and said looking straight into her gorgeous eyes, “well, anyway it had something to do about being with someone you really like. And Meyra Lancaster. I really really like like you!”
"And..." he added, trying to still his rapidly beating heart as he held on to the girl he liked so much. Suddenly feel like he was going to throw up all over her, but no, he would persevere if only so that he can get the answer to his deepest held question - "...Do you want to be icky with me?" Ok...try that one again Dennis. - If only so that he can get the answer to his deepest held question - "I mean...I...want to be your boyfriend..." Good lad...good lad, Dennis.

@Dennis TumbertonMeyra wasn't sure about what he meant with his reply to her, the reasons why he had been thinking so much about her. She knew there was an answer to that question that would make her world change and would make her see it in brighter colours, but she still not dared to hope so much for it, keeping herself guarded from her own silliness.
But the way he spoke to her and the warmth of his hand now holding hers made her heart calm down, allowing her to take a deep breath and feel comfortable being so close to her best friend. She felt his arm wrap around her shoulder as she rested her head on his and closed her eyes for a brief moment. She realised she could have stayed that way for a long time if they had it, but she knew they would be saying goodbye shortly, as they both would be heading home soon for spring break.
Dennis always had something comforting to say, he had a special way of taking her mind off the most oppressive thoughts. Even on a day like that, when she could feel her body and mind closing down by the minute, he could make her laugh and feel lighter, like her own sunshine chasing away her shadows. She heard him chuckle at her own joking remarks and in that moment she thought that was her favourite sound in the world.
Their eyes finally met and she found herself wanting to pause time at that moment, she made a mental note that she should start carrying her camera around more often so she could capture moments like that. She was smiling at him, but when he finished what he had to say, her expression suddenly turned to surprise, her heart started racing against her chest and she was sure she wasn't breathing. Did she hear right? She could hardly believe he had said that, and she was sure he didn't mean what she thought... did he?
"What?" She asked in a airy voice, her eyes searching for his, trying to see in them the answers to her question, "What do you mean...really...like me?" She asked, trying unsuccessfully to keep the hope out of her voice. And when his next words came, Meyra fell silent. It was impossible that her mind was imagining all of that, but she didn't know what to say, it was quite possible that she had lost the ability to speak.
Boyfriend? Did he want to be her boyfriend? Her mind couldn't stop asking one question: "why?" The question lingered so loudly for a moment that she couldn't find the words she wanted to say to him. But from the way he looked at her, she could see the sincerity in his features, that he wasn't trying to deceive her, nor was he being his usual playful self. Would it be selfish if she told him she wanted that too? Being her who she was, what she was... Was it right to allow herself to be a normal girl? Do that to him?
Meyra could not keep looking at him, with all this questions suddenly making her feel unworthy of his feelings, of his friendship and trust. She looked down, at their still joined hands and she saw no hesitance in there, she saw no fear or doubt. So why would she keep thinking like that? Why would she keep doubting his truth? He knew her...he knew what she was and he had never once pulled away from her. He always stood at her side, showing his support...he was the only person outside her family showing her such kindness.
Meyra finally took a deep breath, placing her other hand over his, keeping his between both of her hands, and looking back at him. This time her eyes were full with tenderness tinged with gratefulness and something more. "I would love to be your girlfriend Dennis Tumberton." She told him with a timid smile and grew as the words where being said, "I really, really like like you to"

Dennis must have stuttered horribly. It seemed like she didn’t understand him at all. He thought he was a brave little Ravenclaw but apparently there was still room for improvement. “Yes, I do,” Dennis laughed, not expecting such a scared look on her face. He wasn’t about to stare down a rejection was he? Surely, he didn’t misread the looks they gave each other or the touch…the kiss. She was really quiet for such a long time. Serious doubts were starting to tug at Dennis no matter how many times he dismissed them. Perhaps she just didn’t hear him clearly. A reason. Yes, she should have a reason.
His nerves getting the best of him, Dennis filled the void Meyra had left. “I do really really really like like you-“ one could not have too many ‘really’s, not that that clarified anything. “Meyra, you are smart, brilliant, beautiful, fun, smart, cool-“ yes, many of those are the same thing…he’s only 13, “-Every time I’m not with you I want to be and every time we are together, I-“ Wait, did she say she wanted to be his girlfriend!? She wants to be his girlfriend!?
Dennis couldn’t help but beam a smile so excellent his trademark couldn’t compare. He sat there for a moment holding her as if he was rebooting. He forgot the very thing he was about to say and climbed off the rock. Facing his now-girlfriend, he shook her hand. “Hello, then. I’m Dennis Tumberton, but you can call me Meyra’s boyfriend. Everyone does!” He said unable to wipe the smile off his face. If he was alone right now the sight he would be. It took all his energy not to run around the whole Great Lake shouting how amazing it was to be her boyfriend. He had to be the happiest boy in all of Hogwarts at that very moment!
He motioned for her to join him off the boulder, if she followed he would hold her waist and help her to the ground. He took one more moment to just stare lovingly into her eyes and sighed. “Well, we should probably get back to the castle. Spring break is tomorrow…” Dennis said a mixture of the emotional high he was still riding with a tinge of sadness. Sad they needed to leave the next day, but really excited to hold her hand the whole way back! He would not let her go until he saw her to the Gryffindor tower!
He turned to leave after hearing her thoughts and the stopped. He turned around, held up a finger and a mischievous look now across his face. “You know, I still have something I need to say,” Dennis said, feigning a frown but couldn’t even muster that. He waited for her reply and then steeled himself for what he was about to do.
Taking a step to close the gap between then, he put one hand on her waist and pulled her closer with a hand placed on the side of her neck, his thumb gently supporting her jaw. Inches away from her lips, he smiled with a pause. “Consider this payback for last night,” Dennis whispered, his voice warm but mischievous.
Gently, their lips met. A quick peck followed by a sigh. Still holding onto her, having her there with him was different than anything he had ever felt. Closing his eyes, he kissed her again. Longer, slower this time, lingering that little bit more. His heart felt like it was going to burst out of his chest. In that moment, Meyra was the only girl he ever wanted to kiss for the rest of his life. Everything about her, this moment, it all felt right. She fit so perfectly.
Breathlessly he pulled away, instantly regretting ending so soon but he felt if he didn’t, perhaps he would never stop. The look, the taste, the feel. If he could, he’d given her a million more. But reality sank in and he realized who would have the time to have all those kisses!
Dennis looked at Meyra again, hoping, perhaps, it wasn’t too much. He had never kissed a girlfriend before, he certainly hoped he did it right!

@Dennis TumbertonThe way he started rambling was probably the sweetest thing she had ever heard in her life. She surely did not agreed with everything he said about her, but that was Dennis being Dennis, the cutest boy she had ever met. A timid smile involuntarily appeared in her lips as all doubts and fears vanished from her mind, how could she not want to be his girlfriend? Who would not want to be his girlfriend or boyfriend?
Dennis own smile that answered to her confession made her heart squeeze in warm happiness. Even her body seemed to have forgotten the aching discomfort, which had lessened to the point where it was almost non-existent. All she could feel was as if a light of hope, joy, and all sorts of warm feelings had been lit within her, making her forget about all the rest but Dennis and that moment.
She chuckled lightly as she watched him climbing down the rock where they both had been sitting at, turn back to her and reach out his hand. With a smile glued to her face Meyra accepted his hand in hers, "No one calls you that Dennis!" She told him slightly shaking her head in amusement.
As he silently asked her to get up from the boulder, she picked her satchel from her side, crossing its strap over her shoulder and moved to join him. He reached out to help her, his hands on her waits suddenly had a much more intimate feeling, making her suddenly blush a light pink colour as she made her way to the ground. There was a moment of pause as they stood there looking at each other, their eyes speaking more than words. Dennis was the one breaking the silence, remembering them that they were supposed to walk to the castle getting things ready to head home for spring break. She gave him a comforting, closed-lipped smile, her expression serene and her green eyes full with tenderness, "I guess you're right..." She replied to him mimicking his tone.
They walked towards the castle hand in hand, chatting happily until they arrived to the bottom of the stairs to the Gryffindor tower. There was another pause, and Meyra tried her best to find things that would keep them talking, to delay the inevitable moment when they would have to part ways. "You could visit, you know?" She started with a timid smile and eyes full of hope, “you, me and Rai…we could meet one day at my mom’s tea shop” she told him, her smile turning slightly brighter, “what do you say?”
After a while, the time to say goodbye finally arrived. With some reluctance, Meyra saw Dennis turn and she too gave a step towards the stairs, but she was suddenly stopped, when she noticed Dennis turning back to her. She raised both her eyebrows in a surprised, silent question. His expression now held a certain mischief that made her heart slightly race in anticipation.
She blinked, not being able to predict his intentions or what he was about to addressing next, but the way he looked at her ignited her anxiety and curiosity. She found herself again waiting in suspense and trying to push her negative thoughts that threatened to envelop her mind again. “What…?” She asked in a hesitant, murmuring voice, holding the strap of her backpack with both hands in a comforting, reassuring gesture.
She saw him take a step closer to her and she felt her pulse quickening still searching in his features a reason for his sudden change of attitude. A gasp of surprise escaped her when she felt his hand on her waist, pulling her closer. Her hands dropped from the strap of her backpack and went to his shoulders, an instinctive gesture to help her keep her balance. Her eyes were fixed on his face, like she had been paralysed by some sort of spell, as he went closer, she leaned at his gentle touch, a nervous smile starting to tug at the corner of her lips when she realised what he was going to do.
Slowly, as if it were a scene from one of her favourite romances, his lips found hers. A short, gentle kiss that started too suddenly and ended too soon. Her hands resting on his shoulders lightly tightened, as if she wanted to stop him from pulling away. She rested her forehead against his, her heart pounding and her breathing uneven before they kissed again. Her eyes closed this time as she let herself fall into that moment. It was a tender, sweet kiss. Her first real kiss, where she awkwardly closed her lips and let Dennis gently guide their lips together.
As they slowly pulled away, she was sure she had lost the ability to breathe. She could still feel the ghostly touch of his lips on hers and found herself wishing she would never forget the softness of his kiss. Her eyes remained hovering over his mouth for a second longer, before lifting them to look into his beautiful green eyes, she decided then, that green was her favourite colour in the whole world.
Meyra finally let out the breath she had been unconsciously holding within her chest and a slow smile started to appear on her lips, her eyes shining with warm tenderness, she couldn't look away from him. Gently, she grabbed his hand that was still on her waist and continued to hold it as she stepped back, lightly running her thumb over his knuckles. "See you later, Dennis," She told him in a soft, breathless voice.
Meyra let his hand fall from hers, her gaze still fixed on his as she bit her bottom lip, fighting the goofy smile that threatened to take over. She finally turned to leave, but a sudden thought made her hesitate with her feet already place on the first stair. She stopped and called for him. As he would look back at her, her smile would widened her eyes sparkling with playfulness, "It is really nice to meet you, Meyra's boyfriend!" She told him, before chuckling her way up the stairs.
