If Elisa had been surprised by the flurry of owls flying into the Great Hall at breakfast during her first days at Hogwarts, she was more than used to it by now and often barely bothered to even look up at the birds. Her family sent her letters only about twice a month, and apart from that the owls rarely brought her anything.

That day, slowly digesting her egg and bacon at the Slytherin table, Elisa was far from expecting any post when she felt a shadow swoop down to her side and heard the sound of a letter dropping just besides her plate. Mildly surprised, she shot a curious look at the owl, did not recognise it, so proceeded to open the letter. It was rather carefully sealed, and from the envelope Elisa retrieved a thin sheet of yellowish parchment.

Turning it around, a few rows of a neat but unfamiliar handwriting revealed itself to the Slytherin girl.

Her eyes widened as she skimmed through the message.
𝔗𝔬 𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔠𝔲𝔱𝔢 𝔖𝔩𝔶𝔱𝔥𝔢𝔯𝔦𝔫 𝔟𝔯𝔲𝔫𝔢𝔱𝔱𝔢,
𝔉𝔯𝔬𝔪 𝔱𝔥𝔢 ℌ𝔬𝔤𝔴𝔞𝔯𝔱'𝔰 𝔯𝔲𝔪𝔢𝔯 𝔪𝔦𝔩𝔩, ℑ 𝔥𝔢𝔞𝔯𝔡 𝔱𝔥𝔞𝔱 𝔶𝔬𝔲 𝔞𝔯𝔢 𝔰𝔱𝔦𝔩𝔩 𝔩𝔬𝔬𝔨𝔦𝔫𝔤 𝔣𝔬𝔯 𝔞 𝔡𝔞𝔱𝔢 𝔱𝔬 𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔅𝔞𝔩𝔩. ℑ 𝔴𝔞𝔰 𝔥𝔬𝔭𝔦𝔫𝔤 𝔱𝔥𝔞𝔱 𝔶𝔬𝔲 𝔴𝔬𝔲𝔩𝔡 𝔡𝔢𝔤𝔦𝔫 𝔱𝔬 𝔤𝔬 𝔴𝔦𝔱𝔥 𝔪𝔢. ℑ 𝔰𝔥𝔞𝔩𝔩 𝔫𝔬𝔱 𝔰𝔱𝔞𝔱𝔢 𝔪𝔶 𝔫𝔞𝔪𝔢, 𝔟𝔲𝔱 𝔶𝔬𝔲 𝔴𝔦𝔩𝔩 𝔴 𝔴𝔥𝔬 ℑ 𝔞𝔪 𝔴𝔥𝔢𝔫 𝔶𝔬𝔲 𝔯𝔢𝔞𝔡 𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔡𝔢𝔰𝔠𝔦𝔭𝔱𝔦𝔬𝔫. ℑ 𝔥𝔬𝔭𝔢 𝔱𝔥𝔞𝔱 𝔶𝔬𝔲 𝔴𝔦𝔩𝔩 𝔞𝔠𝔠𝔢𝔭𝔱.

𝔜𝔬𝔲𝔯 𝔇𝔞𝔯𝔨 𝔏𝔦𝔬𝔫 𝔞𝔫𝔡 𝔮𝔲𝔦𝔢𝔱 𝔰𝔥𝔞𝔡𝔬𝔴.
A messy array of thoughts flooded her mind as she lifted her eyes from the letter, puzzlement distinctly showing through her facial features. Elisa frowned slightly. A date to the ball? Sure, she did want to go, and was indeed secretly wishing that somebody would go along with her, but she had never manifested that desire to anyone... or had she? A shiver went through her body as her mind linked this to... legilimancy? Would someone have read her mind?

She looked around quickly, rather alarmed. Nobody seemed to have realised her uneasiness, but... The young girl had the eerie feeling that somebody was watching her every movement closely, anticipating her reaction...

Her gaze met a pair of startling light green eyes.

I walked into the Great Hall feeling trepidation.
Today was the day that She would get my letter.
I sat down, my face revealing nothing.
But I had inner turmoil.
I didn’t know what would happen.
Would she take it the wrong way?
I took out my book, Dragon Species of Great Britain and Ireland, and raised the volume on the radio and slipped the headphones and hoodie on.
"Losing My Religion” by R.E.M started playing.
I read while eating, shoving scrambled eggs in my mouth.
I hummed under my breath.
"Oh life is bigger
It's bigger than you
And you are not me
The lengths that I will go to
The distance in your eyes
Oh no I've said too much
I set it up"

I looked up after a moment when all the owls came.
This is it. This is the moment of truth.
I watched Elisa out of the corner of my eye.
She got the letter. She opened it.
She looked shocked but slightly hopeful.
Then she looked up and scanned the room before her gaze caught mine.
Damn it. I was made.
I got up quickly and rushed out of the hall. I had to get to class after all, no?
It totally didn’t have anything to do with her.
Ha! As if! A sneering voice murmured in my head.

The girl was wearing a hoodie and had headphones on - those devices muggles use to listen to music with. She had long, sleek black hair and seemed to have a like for gothic style accessories.

The two girls' eyes met each other, hazel brown into pale green, before both of them quickly darted their gaze away, conscious of the other's stare. Out of the corner of her eyes, Elisa saw the other girl rise up from the Gryffindor rather hurriedly. She seemed... quite bothered by something Elisa thought, her cheeks reddening as a thought occurred to her mind. What if... she dare not continue, what if... She's the one who sent the letter?

Brandishing a frightful look at the letter in her hand, Elisa's eyes searched around the Great Hall until the found the black haired girl hurrying out of the big oak doors in big steps. The young Slytherin quickly stood up, breathless, and grabbing her stuffed satchel and the letter in the other hand, she ran after the Gryffindor. As she crossed the hall, her cheeks of a bright red colour, she could pay no attention to the feeling of eyes staring at her - this girl had obviously something to do with the mysterious letter. Pushed by a strange determination, Elisa swept away the loose hair sticking to her already sweaty face and finally reached the girl.

As Elisa slowed down, the wave of determination to uncover the mystery behind the letter slowly leaked away, leaving place only to awkwardness.

"I- " Elisa started, innerly cringing at her voice, incapable of introducing the matter. "I was... wondering about- uh... Whether you knew anything about the... this letter." She finished off, breathless, holding up the piece of parchment in her hand. She felt her cheeks grow hot in embarrassment - if she was getting better at social interactions, this situation was far from comfortable to her.

I stared at the piece of paper.
It was my letter.
She seemed to be waiting for my response.
I was panicking underneath but my face was as impassive as a rock.
How did she know that it was me?
Ohh, fricking hell. I'm toast.
I swallowed. If only I had been a bit more discreet!
Then, I wouldn't be in this situation!
I snarled at myself inside my head, berating my idiocy.
I had to work on my subtlety.
I still had to give the other girl an answer.
I briefly considered lying.
Then went against the idea, after all, she was a Slytherin. She would see right through me.
I schooled my features into a cold, bland mask before I responded, choosing my words carefully.
"I do indeed know about this letter.
After all, who wouldn't recognize a letter they themselves sent?"

I said, raising an eyebrow, looking aloof.
I saw the shocked look on her face.
Damn. This is hell then.
I thought, having to wait for her response.
I really hoped that she wouldn't be put off by my mask.
It was only a mask after all. I waited.

Her heart hammered loudly in her chest, still slightly panting, as she waited for the girl's response. Elisa perceived a tiny moment of hesitation before the girl affirmed to have been the letter's sender. Nothing in her facial expression displayed anything but polite coldness.
A mixture of contrasting feelings swarmed into the second year girl - puzzlement, from the difference of the girl's manner now with when she rose from the table; surprise, from how bluntly she had confirmed Elisa's suspicions; and finally an unexplainable and shivering feeling of inexpressible excitement.
If what this girl had written was true - she... Wants to go to the ball with me? Elisa thought, incredulous. She quickly scanned the person before her with her eyes, and quickly looked down. Is it possible that this girl... likes me?
Elisa felt herself faltering under the flurry of emotions overwhelming her.
"I- sure", Elisa blurted out, "I mean- about your letter... I'd be honoured to go with you, to the ball."
The words escaped her mouth before she could control them - the aspect of not having to show up alone at the ball was too tempting.

I was
shocked. I couldn't believe it.
She actually wanted to go with me to the Spring Ball???
That seemed too good to be true.
She seemed shocked of her own words as well.
But before I could stop myself, the words brimming inside of me spilled out like a cup with too much water in it.
"Really? You would go to the ball with me?"
As soon as the words left my mouth I froze.
Then I blushed.
My father always told me that when I blushed I looked more like a person instead of the usual frozen corpse coloring I had.
What does that have to do with anything?!? I thought to myself.
It means that you're more human then you think dearie A crooning voice in my head replied.
Shut up I thought miserably.
Maybe she didn't;t realize my outburst? I thought hopefully.
Ha, fat chance. As if!. She was looking straight at me, no pun intended, and she had a strange look upon her face.
Maybe she is happy? Sad? Angry? I didn't know!
And it was annoying the heck out of me.

Elisa's cheeks flushed to a rosy pink, eyes wide and bashful. She hurriedly directed her gaze away from the girl she was facing and settled on staring forcefully at the stone tiles beneath her feat, panic swelling inside her chest. The young girl thought she might literally collapse under the overwhelmingly heavy atmosphere, when her interlocutor's voice rang out through the ceaseless ringing of her ears.

Without raising her eyes, Elisa distinguished a peculiar tone in the girl's voice - was it... hope? eagerness? Daring to look back up at the other student, Elisa was even more surprised as she saw a light pink flush spreading across the previously stone-cold expression. Somehow reassured by the uneasy eagerness of her interlocutor, Elisa attempted a shy grin and, trying to control her stuttering, said, "O-Of course! I'd love to go with you!" She immediately regretted her words - did they sound too excited? too eager? After all, she was facing a complete stranger - who knows how the two girls would be able to keep each other company for the ball.

Despite all that, Elisa was not ready to give up on this excellent opportunity. "Well- ", she started, after giving enough time for the girl to respond to her previous sentence, "I guess that's settled then... We'll meet each other at the Great Hall's doors, then?" She glanced hopefully at the girl.

"Um... in case you need to contact me - I'm Elisa, Elisa Wagner, in Slytherin." she introduced herself before realising that the girl probably already knew her name to be able to send her an owl.
