Between Stars and the Moon
@Alaric EquinoxCarefully, Nico would've knocked on the door of the professors office. She waited patiently for a while, her hands slightly clenched into fists. She was nervous.
Earlier that day, the small dhampir would've been seen sketching on her bed at her dorm. The gossip within the local girl gang was as lively as ever.
'Oh my god! Can you believe it? It's like twilight or something haha..' A blonde girl exclaimed. Nico perked her ears up, as a shiver ran down her spine. Twilight... What an atrocious representation of vampire folk. Nico didn't know, but if one of the other girls had looked over at her, they would've been terrified. The red dot in the middle of her iceblue eyes, would've been piercing their back. Instead, Nico took a deep breath and continued to listen to their conversation.
'I know right! He's so handome too!' A brownhaired girl, waved both her hands at herself, trying to cool herself down. What in the world were they talking about? Was this a new muggle movie that was coming up? Honestly... what were moviemakers these days thinking. Nico sighed softly once more, laying down on her side. Watching these girls be typical white girls made her stomach turn. Instead, she chose to just listen.
'Huh? Who? A new boy?' ''Haha, no silly! The new astronomy professor! He's an absolute cutie, oh mah gosh.' They continued to giggle as it all became clear to her. A new professor.. who... was a dhampir? Maybe even a vampire? The girls didn't go into details and left, discussing outloud what they liked about the way he looked.
Nico couldn't lie to herself. She got curious. A professor... who was someone like her. The only other dhampir she knew of at school was a treachorous one. Kaegan Deathmote. He was still quite a puzzle to her but he seemed to.. endure her for now.
As the cackling of the group of girls faded away in the distance, Nico sat up and put her sketchbook in her bag. Maybe... would she dare to go visit him? The little dhampir had no idea of how he looked like or what kind of personality he had. Except.. Apparantly he was goodlooking to most students. And rather mysterious...
Her family never really knew other dhampirs, not that her father told her. He kept rather quiet about other clans. Except that he said that there were... ruthless dangerous families that didn't try to get along with humans.
Putting on her robes, Nico decided to head out. The Professor was probably at his office, maybe doing preparations for astronomy classes and homework. That was her safest bet. Swiftly, Nico ran up the stairs, up to the direction of the Great Hall first. Being in the House that had a huge amount of stairs, did give her an amazing durability. The first days going up the stairs were pure hell...
After what seemed forever, Nico arrived at his office. And there she was, carefully knocking on his door. But there was no answer. Weird... Was her timing off? Did she miss him walking out? Maybe he left to a meeting? Do... professors have meetings in Hogwarts? They should right? Is he... out.. to drink bl-
Before she could finish that thought, she heard some noise from the astronomy classroom. Ofcourse... He could totally be in there... Nico had been so focused on getting here and.. wondering who this person was... She didn't think the astronomy classroom would've been an option.
Quietly, the nervous little dhampir walked over to the classroom door and pressed her ear on the wood. The noise wasn't loud, but subtle... As if someone was just... minding his or her own business. Pulling away from the door, Nico hesitated. For a few seconds.
Gently, she knocked on the door before carefully pushing it open. Just enough space, for her to peek her head through. Quietly leaning in, Nico hesitated to speak up.

@Nico Shymane

Alaric had awoken somewhere around 2 pm in the afternoon and went through his normal morning routine. The first part of that was applying make-up to his skin that covered up the normal corpse-like tone of his race. No, instead he maintained a milky-white complexion it was the only thing about himself that he could not stand. As soon as that was finished, he would top it off with a sealant so that it could get wet and not simply wash away if he had to walk outside in the rain. Was it raining today, he wondered as he dressed in his off-white shirt, dark navy slacks, and matching vest.
He would slip into his black shoes and grab the copper pocket watch attaching the chain to the middle button of his vest and the main timepiece would be nestled inside of the pocket. A quick combing of his hair and he was off to the astronomy classroom he had homework to grade. It was easy to lose track of time sitting at your desk grading homework and it wasn’t until he heard a tapping at the window from Zurie, a great white owl, wanting to be let in.
He would stand up and stretch his cramped-up body before walking over to the window and undoing the latch to let her in. She would hop over to her perch and start preening herself as he closed the window and redid the latch. Remove the pocket-watch from its pocket he would look at the time and realized it had only been a few hours it had felt like so much more than that. A soft knock at the door drew his attention and elicited a loud and curious hoot from Zurie. “You may come in!” His velvety warm voice called out from up the stairs where his desk was. He was curious as he did not get a lot of visitors being so new and let alone what he was in general. Maybe it was one of the other professors?

Slightly spooked by the answer she didn't expect to receive, she jumped. Only a few centimeters of the ground. Djees,... that got her good. She was so nervous...“You may come in!”
Who's voice was that? Was it the new professor after all?
Carefully, she entered the room, appearing from behind the door. Her gaze scanned the environment filled with stargazing equipment and closed the door behind her. As she did, Nico tried to locate the source of the voice. It sounded warmer than she had expected.
Setting a few steps inside, her eyes caught the new Professor. Standing ontop of a small set of stairs next to what seemed his pet owl. The bird was huge and had a beautiful color. Was it an arctic owl, she wondered. After what seemed an eternity of pondering about this bird, her gaze dropped back at the professor. It was quite true what she heard of the girls at her dorm. He was... Well... Quite goodlooking. Was this man really a dhampir? She had no clue how to ask him. Maybe it was rude of her to ask. It wasn't really her business aswell... But... he was another dhampir! How could she not ask him questions.
'H-Hello, professor. Sorry to intrude.' Hesitantly, she spoke up loud enough, yet her voice sounded really soft and clear. 'Welcome to Hogwarts, sir.' She bowed lightly. At this point she was just improvising. The only professor she confronted head first was Professor Griffith and... she still had no clue what went wrong there.
'I-I'm Nico. Nico Shymane. I'll be honest, I heard well.. stories.. But as in most gossip, they never really said your name. Who do I call you by, sir?' She smiled softly, resting her hand on her elbow. As she waited for his answers, her mind already trailed through everything she had said and done so far. Had she been too straightforward? Too rude? Did she not wait patiently for him to tell her to approach him? As he stood at the top of the stairs, Nico looked up at him with her iceblue eyes, near the bottom of the stairs.

The young girl stepped into the classroom and welcomed him. She would be met with a very warm smile and a nod. “Why thank you miss Shymane. Please feel free to come on up and you may call me Professor Equinox.” Alaric would move back towards his desk and take a seat behind it. There would be another seat that she could take if she was so inclined. She had mentioned gossip and that amused him. It was true he was at the first years boat ride in and he was not surprised tha first years would have talked about him. He didn’t exactly try to hide what he was other than his skin tone and that was more for himself than it was for anyone else.
He decided he would be forward with this young girl if it was rumors that brought her here to see him that he should sate her need for knowledge. “Miss Shymane if the rumors that you have heard about me are that I am a Dhampir then they would be absolutely correct.” His dark vermilion eyes would watch her carefully for her reaction. Zurie would take the moment to hop from her perch onto Alarics desk as if she were expecting something from him that he had not yet given her. With a gentle pet of her head he would produce a treat for her which she accepted gladly before hopping to the corner of his desk also watching the young girl.

His warm voice took her by surprise again. She was pleasantly surprised that he was so welcoming compared to well.... Griffith wasn't really as welcoming.
Carefully, Nico walked up the stairs as she took in some more of the rooms view. The classes they used to have here with Professor Thurston never really... showed the classroom as much. When she reached the top, the professor had already taken a seat. A second seat infront of his desk was there for her to sit if she wanted to. Why wouldn't she? Standing would only make her shaking knees more visible...
This whole situation was kind of weird to her. A first good start with a professor? Well... they didn't really speak yet... It slightly ennerved her. As she sat down quietly, Nico rest her hands on her knees. If this professor was an actual dhampir, there sure was alot of light in this room. Usually dhamiprs would rather hide and lurk in the dark, no? Her father was like that.
“Miss Shymane if the rumors that you have heard about me are that I am a Dhampir then they would be absolutely correct.”
He was rather blunt about it. Straightforward. No dilly dallying. Nico's eyes widened a little as they met with the vermillion colors of the professor. She wasn't sure if she should be afraid or happy. A professor at Hogwarts was a Dhampir... Someone like her. Should she... Maybe... Figuring out how to respond, her iceblue gaze followed the bird that had hopped over to Professor Equinox.
'So... it's true. I see.' A rather nervous smile slid upon her face. 'I-I'm sorry if it was nosy of me to come and ask you... But.. Well.. I'm not super good at socialising with my fellow dorm.. girls. I wasn't sure if I could trust their word.. H-hence why I'd rather come and hear it from the source... ' Was she using weird words? Was she... being too... straightforward?
'I-... Well the rumors weren't entirely the reason why I came here or... why I got curious about your ... well.. race.' She lightly clenched her hands into her robes that rested upon her lap. Usually she didn't say that much towards a Professor. But so far he didn't really give her weird looks... Except maybe the moment he told her he was indeed a dhampir...

Her reaction wasn’t one of fear, that was good, at least not every student would run from him in complete terror. He was suspicious about the girl, but not in a way that made him think that she was going to be a trouble maker. No, her Prefect badge would attest to the opposite. He assumed she was like him, but he would let her come out and say that when she was ready as there was no need to force things. The only other student to approach him like this had also been a dhampir so it made sense that he would attract the curious dhampirs first.
“That is a very commendable trait Miss Shymane. Most people take what they hear for granted without looking to the true source.” He looked back to Zurie as she stood on the homework that he would be grading later that night. “Zurie you have a perch, I promise it is more comfortable than the students’ homework.” Zurie looked at them and for just a moment it would seem as if he and the owl were having a staredown. Although, Alaric was warm and kind they both had strong personalities which on occasion tended to clash. Zurie picked up on foot and put it back down which brought a smirk to Alaric’s face. “Fine… Maybe next time I go treat shopping they just happen to be out of your favorite.” If an owl could scowl this one certainly did as she walked across his desk between himself and Nico before hopping onto her perch. Though he had also hoped that deflecting some of the attention to the owl instead of on her would help lighten the atmosphere.
He would look back to Nico with an amused chuckle. “My apologies, Zurie, is a very strong and independent lady. So if I am not being too forward, what can I help you with Miss Shymane?” Again he placed the ball in her court if she wanted to tell him about herself, he opened the door for her to express it. She could also easily backtrack and just ask other questions of him as well. If there was one thing, he wanted to make sure to never do was make her feel uncomfortable about herself. He knew all too well how that felt and he wouldn’t wish that on even the people he disliked.

Sitting up, she smiled abit shy as he praised her for coming to him instead of believing rumours. Students at this school usually didn't stick close to Professors. This castle was a place where they learned to be independent. Most of the Professors were quite distant from children. Some didn't even like children to begin with.
The Professor had a pet bird who stayed by his side near his desk. The bird had decided to sit on some papers that were neatly placed on the wood. The owl was rather cute, Nico thought as it walked across the table after a stare down with the Dhampir Professor. Not sure how to react she just stared at the owl in awe before Alaric explained their differences. Their relationship seemeed different than what she and Pip had. He'd stick with her and heck if no one had bad intentions. He'd be there for her when she felt anxious or insecure. A good friend. Then again... It was easier to cuddle with a fluffball than with an owl.
Hearing the Professors chuckle kinda made her lose her guard. She felt abit more at ease and less frightened. He was... well, not human... but atleast a person with a heart after all.
'Ah! It's fine. S-She's a .. a pretty owl.' Slightly flustered she rubbed the back of her head. His good looks did... sort of have a certain intimidation on her. His kind voice did reassure her.
'I-I... ehm... Professor Equinox. I.. I'm a dhampir too. When I heard the new Professor was a dhampir, I got.. curious. I have only ever known Dhampirs from my family. My father and grandfather to be exact. Honestly, I.. was wondering. How... How was your... life like? Where did you.. come from? I-If of course I can be so...If I can ask..' Once more her insecurities creeped up on her. Was she being too pushy and nosey? Even though she just wanted to learn more about other Dhampirs. If their life had been any better.. Were they bullied too?

Alaric nodded his agreement. “She is certainly a beautiful lady. She’s always sassy after she wakes up. I assure you she is normally sweet.” When she spoke his name his eyes were drawn back to her and he listened intently. He had his suspicions that she was a Dhampir as well, so far, the dhampir students were the ones that sought him out. It was no surprise to him as it was what he had expected. It was also what he had wanted, to be able to hopefully be that one person that could help them if they couldn’t help themselves.
“Of course you may ask Miss Shymane it is only natural to be curious. After all, each and every one of our kind seems to grow up so differently even if our circumstances are the same.” He thought for a moment knowing he would have to lie to her at some point. He obviously could not tell her he was born a dhampir, no one alive knew he was a born dhampir besides the woman that had raised him.
“So, I was actually born in America, my father traveled from England and met my mother. I have been a dhampir for as long as I can remember. I have been a dhampir since I was very young. I was one of the lucky ones because although we had no other dhampirs in our family, my father did find a dhampir nanny to take care of me and guide me. She handled my private tutoring for school work in general as well as taught me how to properly be, well who I am.” It could be noted that he skipped over his parents being in the picture and the way he spoke about his nanny would be more of how someone would speak about their birthmother allowing Nico to make the conclusion that he might not have had a lot of contact with his parents.
“Because my father was from England we applied for Hogwarts because it was the only school that would even consider taking me and even back then it was much more controversial to allow ones like us into this place. However, I was accepted and sorted into Slytherin no less.” He gave her a knowing smile. “School years were a bit… Chaotic… If it weren’t for Professor Browne and the Astronomy professor at the time I am not sure I would have graduated, to be honest.” When he spoke of Caradoc Browne his tone of voice seemed to allude that he was quite fond of him.
“Hmm, let’s see. After graduation I went back home to America and started teaching Astronomy to muggles and now, I am here…” He nodded more as if noting that he thought he had covered everything if not at least mostly blanketed. “Please feel free to ask any questions you wish if I am not comfortable answering something, I will let you know.” He also made a mental note to visit Caradoc soon it had been too long and he had been busier than expected after getting to Hogwarts he had not had proper time to greet his friend.

'America.'
As her legs slightly dangled from the chair on which she was seated, she let the word seep in. 'I've never been to America. I-.. I have seen movies and pictures. But it looks pretty fun!' She smiled softly with a determined nod. Even though she had never been there, maybe one day she could. Her ice blue eyes shyly locked with his. Her mother had learned her that. It's a polite thing to do and it makes the one you talk to feel.. noticed. Something like that. Nico was determined to be on good terms with Professor Equinox. That would be great. honestly. She'd have someone in the castle, an adult, who she could rely on. It would make her feel quite less lonely.
'But.. Professor.. I don't mean to be rude but... I've been a dhampir for aslong as I can remember, aswell. I was born from my father, who is a dhampir and... my mother - who is human.' With her hands she gestured as if she was carrying each of her parents in her hands. 'Was it your mother? Your father? I-I'd find it hard to believe that a dhampir would be created out of thin air..' With a soft giggle she tried to lift the weight of the question. She had a suspicion that the Professor might not feel comfortable sharing so much at once.
And he was sorted into Slytherin aswell?! Nico couldn't help but feel abit more proud about her being sorted in the green House. She used to have trouble with the Hats decision... But... in the nearly two years she had been here Nico made so many new friends. How could she not like the Slytherin house. It became her home.
