yep, thats definitely the right way to look at all thisEmily Shephard wrote: 5 May 2025, 20:30 I never take anything off the Internet too seriously. Just because it says x, y and z doesn't mean you have/don't have a, b or c.
A lot of it can easily boil down to stress or pent up worry. Naturally if there's pain or legitimate concern etc talk to a professional but just be careful about what you find online, because you can then very easily fall into a lifestyle following something that you probably never had to begin with whether the Internet says so or not

i think my concern always stems from- the people who engage in this kind of stuff and are most suspectable to it are children, and that raises the question of, what are the long term effects of being exposed to this kind of stuff? i sort of wish there were more studies done on the effects of youths psyche with prolonged exposure to the internet, but and that the studies that have been done were taken more seriously!!!
i should change my major to psych~~ maybe a minor... hmmm
don't look at me; you can't understand, right? i'm just like a monstrous flower that bloomed too soon

During the 2020 malarkey, my mood went down. Internet and other people who didn't know me well kept telling me it was depression. Feeling like I had no other choice I was given meds for it.
I took meds for about 3 months only to realise I never had depression (my doctor never diagnosed me either which was a big indicator at the back of my mind. Then again, lockdown caused a huge disconnect between doctors and patients). In the end it was just worry and anxiety. So I'd been (a) taking meds for something that (b) I don't have. And the time that I'd been taking meds never improved my mood either but rather make me feel unwell.
There's so many natural home remedies for a lot of this stuff as well that I don't think people pay enough attention to. Homemade tea, outdoor spaces etc. do a lot more than what we think.

Just hopping in to add another perspective to this discussion: self-diagnosis is not always a bad thing and can often help to receive better care in the long-term, especially with mental health issues. Some people go through hell to find good doctors who believe them and who won't stop at their race, age, gender or weight. So, sometimes, self-diagnosis can be useful!Andronica Evans wrote: 5 May 2025, 20:39Scout Fu-Hai wrote: 5 May 2025, 20:32i actually really wanted to write a paper on the spike, back when it was relevant! its so interesting to me, like i wonder what the connection from covid to more time on social media to self diagnosing is- like obviously more people being on these online spaces means that its easier for things to trend, but DID/MPD is a mental disorder that's always been considered taboo in society (i think bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, and DID are the big 3, but also Narcissistic personality disorder could count in that to)--- so like.... what made the sudden shift?! why did everyone want it???? i really should write a paper on this LOLAndronica Evans wrote: 5 May 2025, 20:25I remember that !! It was some weird times , it was also around the time I go diagnosed with DID and a lot of people kept thinking I was self diagnosed ;-;Yeah !! anything someone said they had ' DID ' but was self diagnosed made me sick to my stomach , I'm crying out loud even saying your ' self ' diagnosed with disorders is dumb , if you think you have go check it out don't say you have it with out proof , I'm diagnosed doctor with DID , HPD and ADHD
Scout, there are actually tons of papers and research on the effects of internet exposure on young people. You can have a look at Google Scholar to find some!
There are also some studies on self diagnosis in regards to mental health or health in general which could be cool to look at if you guys are interested
