He yawned. Six in the bloody morning and not even coffee could keep him awake long enough. He just wanted to keep dozing off. A few minutes would pass by slowly as he flipped through some of the medical records he had. He just wanted to see if the content containing Clark was accurate. It felt kind of skewed though, there was no way Clark did not have a history before February of this year. This had to be false, because he felt he knew his son. His son was destructive! He was bound to get hurt!

This lack of history made Octavius feel as if someone did not want him there. Sure, it was a far reach, but when you don't have coffee and have been up for a while in where it's still early morning? You pretty much get what you get, no matter how cursed it is. His eyes drooped, so he just stood up and walked past each bed, trying to see if there was something he could do. Hopefully someone was not sleeping, maybe he'd be able to.. well, maybe he'd just wake someone up. No. He wouldn't. He shouldn't.

He walked back and forth, before jogging in place with such intensity, you'd think he was running a 90 degree vertical climb to the sky.

Siobhan had looked in the mirror at the reduction that had been done to her eye scars. Everything was slowly being returned to normal, though given the delicacy that was required when dealing with the facial skin it had taken nearly three or four sessions before she was at a point where she thought she could live without the fear of judgement. Though her face was driving her nuts with how itchy it had been since the reduction and she wasn't allowed to scratch for fear of irritating the skin.

She supposed a trip to the Hospital Wing would help. There had to be something in the arsenal of their nurse that could help her with how crazy her face was driving her. She slipped into something comfortable, jeans and a white teeshirt, before trekking into the Hospital wing with her faithful compainion, Toaster. Toaster helped guide her down the stairs and around corners- warning her of the missing steps or tricky timing of the stairs. She wasn't sure what she would do without him in this time of her life.

She could smell the Hospital wing from down the hall, given the wide use of antiseptic and cleansing charms used to keep it clean. She hadn't had the fortune of meeting the nurse before but she had heard they were lovely- very kind, and proficient in their knowledge.

When she walked in, Toaster meowed for her to pick him up as she walked towards the office door and knocked hoping that the nurse was in. She wrinkled her nose as she attempted not to itch her face again.

Adeline flicked a stray strand of umber hair from her shoulder, a sly smirk painting her fox-like face. She turned to face the Hufflepuff boy to her right. "Say, Joseph.." Adeline started, breaking out into a tiny skip "I'd say we've done it!" The Ravenclaw girl held her hand up, asking for a high-five. Joseph beamed back at Addie, slapping her hand, causing a loud clap to ring out through the halls. The sudden noise prompted the pair to laugh amongst themselves joyfully, before quickly hushing each other back down to an appropriately sneaky volume.

While Addie and Joseph had only just met earlier that morning, the pair had quickly hit it off, and had some how found themselves lying their way into an exploratory trip to the infirmary, one of the only places Adeline had still not visited during her tenure at Hogwarts. The two had been quite convincing, after all, seeing how they had successfully convinced their peers that they had both come down with a mysterious cough over night, and it was imperative that they quarantine from the other students, ASAP! Harmless fun (other than the dreaded possibility of losing house points), predictable of children their age.

As the two grew closer to the Hospital Wing, the realization hit Adeline that not only had she never seen the Hospital Wing, she had never been to see the nurse himself. Let's hope he is...nice. the blue-eyed girl prayed to herself. Swallowing down nerves, Adeline pulled at her robes, straightening them out the best that she could. To her relief, Joseph broke the silence. "Now don't forget to cough, and make a face like this!" Adeline couldn't help but let out a chuckle at Joseph's impression of a "sick" face- a combination of droopy eyes, and a lazy frown. Seemed good enough for her. She mimicked his face in return as the two opened the large doors of the Hospital Wing.

The scenery was strangely comforting for an infirmary, homey touches decorated the otherwise sterile environment- it was apparent that someone had put a good deal of effort into sprucing the place up. While the astringent odor of the room was quite unpleasant, Addie found the space to be peaceful otherwise. As the girl began to space-out, a sharp elbow to her side snapped her back to reality, and reminded her to fix her face. The girl let out a small sniffle, exchanging knowing glances with Joseph.

Just then, Adeline noticed a chestnut-haired girl and her cat waiting at the office door, summoning the nurse. A small pang of guilt passed over Adeline- she did feel guilty to be taking up the nurse's time when there were students in need of actual care. She shook it off, swearing to herself that she would not get in the way of serious business while her and her new friend pulled off their little stunt.

Adeline took a seat on a nearby bed with Joseph as she waited for the nurse to appear.

Octavius stopped jogging, hearing light chatter outside the doors. He turned, watching someone cough. A girl. Maybe she had the flu? Surely that wasn't possible. Well, if it was.. what was the proper cure for it? His eyes lingered over to meet the one next to her holding a cat. He needed to stop this infestation of the illnesses as soon as possible, but how?

With a weary sigh, he whipped out his wand and pointed at the girl holding the cat. "Tentaclifors." He said softly, watching her head transfigure into a singular tentacle that seemed to be dripping with whatever slime was on it. She had no face, as it were now replaced with the underside of a tentacle.

He turned towards the coughing girl, and quickly cast the mouth removing curse, "Oscausi!" He proclaimed with a soft but determined tone. His wand matching up. The girl would stop coughing, but she would find that she was lacking lips and that where the mouth hole was, her skin covered it up as if it were never there. She would also find herself unable to verbally communicate.

"I'm sorry guys! But I can't have you guys getting sick! I don't know what it is you guys have but I cannot risk the lives of these other students. I personally don't want my sons getting afflicted with it. Anyways.." Octavius spoke, his eyes rolling.

"What did you need me for?"

Almost as quickly as the Nurse had made his presence known, he had drawn his wand with precision. A bit of fear began to pulse in Addie, please don't cast some sort of lie detecting spell! The girl prayed to herself, her hands nervously clenching into fists. She couldn't have predicted what would come next.

Adeline watch with increasing anxiety as the man cast an unfamiliar spell on the older girl. Before Addie knew it, the girl's face had morphed into something horrible- a slimy mess of a tentacle, writhing about. Adeline froze, turning to Joseph, fear painted across her face. Surely he knows best.. Her mind raced. Before she could utter a sound, The nurse calmly directed his wand toward her, and confidently spoke "Oscausi!"

The sensation was unbelievably complex. As the young girl's mouth sealed shut, panic spread it's way throughout her body, her hands grasping at the barren slab of skin where her mouth should be. She vaguely could make out the sound of the nurse speaking, but the pounding in her head drowned most noise down to a whisper.

It was impossible not to feel like this was a manifestation of her deepest fear. Nightmares where Adeline's voice would vanish were far too common- a symptom of her chronic fear of being misunderstood. Sitting here, her ability to communicate taken from her, was more than terrifying. In that moment, her worst fear had become a reality. ARE YOU CRAZY? she tried to speak, momentarily forgetting she had no means to do so. Change me back! She pleaded in her head.

In a panic, Adeline leapt from her spot on the bed, and approached the nurse, her hands grasped as if she were pleading.

Joseph gritted his teeth, his smile dimming as his gaze landed on the Hospital Wing before him. It brought back horrible memories. Memories of pain, of fear. Memories of being helplessly frozen in place as though encased in an invisible shell, his gaze transfixed on that particular speck of dust on the ceiling. Memories of a house- Joseph shook his head, turning to Adeline with a determined glint in his eye. The past was the past. What mattered now was the task at hand.

Fooling the Professor had been simple, but their next task was a whole other level of challenging. Fooling the Nurse. Surely a medically-trained adult would be able to see past a handful of droopy eyelids and forced coughs, right?

Joseph stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes widening in surprise. There was a girl standing before the door, cradling a cat in hand. She looked worse for wear - bearing multiple eye scars that nearly drove Joseph to wince - but he’d recognise her anywhere. Siobhan. Goodness, it felt like ages since he’d last seen her.

Ignoring the guilt gnawing at his heart for taking up the Nurse’s time when Siobhan clearly needed medical attention, Joseph shot the Ravenclaw girl beside him a grin, before ambling over to the entrance.

Well, lucky for them, it didn’t take long for the Nurse to arrive, examining his soon-to-be patients.

It was a grown man, most of his head shrouded in thick, brown hair, wearing an expression that read, “too bored, gimme something to do.” Fair enough. It couldn’t be particularly entertaining watching the sleeping form of patients, waiting for someone to attend to. Maybe they were doing him a favour by providing him company.

Without warning, the man whipped out his wand, casting a spell on Siobhan. Joseph bit back a gasp. Her head was gone, a snaky, writhing tentacle in its place.  From the looks of it, his stomach must have transformed into a tentacle too, from the way it was lurching uncomfortably.

Were they going to meet the same fate?

Adeline turned to him, terror written plainly across her face. If she was looking for affirmation, all Joseph had to provide was the doubt and unease in his eyes as he stared back into hers.

About time, anyways. The nurse raised his wand a second time, proclaiming another spell he had never heard of. This time at Adeline.

Adeline looked shocked enough to scream - except she couldn’t. Her mouth had completely vanished without a trace, replaced by a plain chunk of skin. Joseph never looked more sick. Sick with absolute horror. He had a sudden urge to dash out of the Hospital Wing, pleading on his knees for the Professor to accept him back in class. He’d do anything. Anything to save his precious head from turning into a giant banana.

If Joseph felt the shock, Adeline lived it out. Rushing forward with new found energy, the girl gazed upwards at the Nurse with pleading, desperate eyes, as though raving to yell something - to demand why, ask for help, say anything at all.

"The Nurse knows what's best," Joseph assured himself quietly, closing his eyes to maintain composure. He wondered if those were the last words he'd able to utter that day.

Siobhan was trying to scream and suddenly it felt like there was no air within her lungs or body. She knew that she had dropped Toaster and the weight of her head was far too heavy to keep herself upright. What was happening to her- to her head?! Why couldn't she see or breathe.

Panic set in and she was beginning to get dizzier and dizzier, the lack of oxygen depriving her of much needed reason and sanity. She felt the weight of her body falling to the ground and a heavy cracking pain in her wrist as she couldn't see where she was falling. She knew it was broken and the pain of this, and humilation of whatever had happened to her head.

All of her senses were diminished due to the lack of what she assumed was all of her orifices on her head. Eyes, ears, mouth, nose. Poor Toaster was probably freaking out and in despair over seeing his normally beautiful owner reduced to something so grotesque and monstrous. Everything hurt and the humilation of the situation only added more pain to whatever it was that was going on. This nurse wasn't a nurse- this was a cruel joke of a staff member obviously.

She could actively feel herself passing out if that was even possible. From the pain, confusion and- WAS THAT SLIME?! Ew it was everywhere, all over her hand, and she could feel it dripping against her legs and shoes. She tried to keep her head still, but the franticness of whatever it was that her head had been transfigured into prevented her from keeping it upright and normal looking.

God, did the universe hate her? Her last thought before she passed out from the pain and confusion was yes; yes it did.

It wasn't often that the numinous witch found herself treading upon the third floor of Hogwarts beyond passing through towards the Dueling Club, stretching legs, or the simple perusal of the castle's history through an array of silver, golden, and bronze, freshly-polished trophies. Much of Hogwarts' kinder history could be gleaned from the awards on display, and although history was a secret delight of Sarai's, the stench of antiseptic and cleansing charms had become an overwhelming thing since the discovery of her pregnancy. Its gag-inducing stench seemed to waft to all corners of the third floor, keeping the woman at bay over the last several months.

Her stomach churned often at a simple whiff amid her former detours, her eyes glossing with tears as the woman attempted to swallow back the sour-tasting bile forming in her mouth. This trek this morning would be no different unfortunately, but the Toussaint woman was determined to introduce herself to whoever the nurse was since her fellow Parselmouthed friend Dusana left the position. With the assistance of different potions to alleviate the growing nausea at the array of scents wafting into her nose, Sarai was successful in avoiding hurling up her oxtail, plantains, and rice from the night before.

Her serpentine familiar would coil herself around the underside of Sarai's baby bump, alleviating some of the pressure on her bladder as she trekked up the stairs, a glass cup of herbal tea tightly clasped in each hand. It was a concocted brew crafted by her truly from the different herbs grown in her greenhouses, and hopefully a decent morning pick-me-up to whomever would be the present Nurse now.

It was barely past 6 AM, and the Haitian woman had hoped that this time of day would be free of students to bode well for meeting a new faculty member without any drama. "Bonjou-" Sarai started, announcing herself as the woman rounded the corner and stepped foot into the Hospital Wing, only to be greeted by an unrecognizable heap of a student collapsed on the ground with a singular tentacle as a head that oozed slime.

What the fuck.

The glass cups of piping hot tea would collide onto the marble flooring as Sarai rushed forward, sending the glass pieces and hot tea to spill and clatter across the floor. She kneeled to examine the girl and her broken, swollen and bruising wrist, trying to recall a solution in her frazzled state.

Her gunmetal gaze swept upwards to see another student missing a mouth. The third student, a boy, would seemingly be unharmed. It wasn't until Sarai spotted Octavius that all of the missing pieces fell into place.

"Ranyon good-for-nothing/used rag," she muttered under her breath before addressing Octavius, her accent heavy with a condescending tone that dripped with contempt and malice, "Demon, who let you back into Hogwarts?"

He stared at the girls and pondered what the hell was wrong with him, why did he do so? Preventing the spread of germs or illnesses wasn’t excusable! Now, if it were Covid-19, maybe he could get away with it but it wasn’t. His head began to spin as he tried to figure out why that one girl was coughing, could it be a new strand or illness? Or could it be a common illness, something like the flu or something. Maybe the girl had pneumonia. Oh god, what the hell?

He decided he would need to apologize profusely, despite doing so just moments prior. His heart raced. His brows brimmed with sweat. “Guys, I am sorry. Let me try to remember how to reverse those effects. I can do yours Sio.. but I don’t remember how to do yours Adeline.” He said, feeling bad. He wanted to cast these spells, that was for sure, always had wanted to, but this was never really a doable thing, and he thought he found a solution to the problem of coughing with an unknown cause or illness. Maybe he didn’t.

He should’ve been smarter. He heard the noise of Sarai, saying a word he didn’t know. But she also called him a demon. He’d be flattered, normally, but the hell? It startled him, hearing her speak, so much so that he turned his wand towards the boy, Joseph, and spoke the first thing that came to mind (Capio Picturam (portrait curse)). He yelled out loudly and in exhaustion. “DAMN IT! Sarai, what the hell? I’m not cleaning the floor.” He looked at Joseph’s portrait, the aftermath and dropped his wand and covered his mouth, regretting what he just did. He did not deserve magic.

How would he fix it? He couldn’t trust himself around magic. He needed to think before he cast, but that would need to mean that he must train himself to do so. His expressions dropped further.

Oh god.

“Joseph, I’m sorry, crap how do I undo all this?” He asked, staring at Sarai with an ache in his chest. He felt himself hyperventilating, his voice cracked, his eyes nearly swelling with tears. He blinked several times to try to get rid of the tears, as he was a man and men do not cry.

The next few moments seemed to sprint by. Adeline watched the older girl slump to the floor, tentacle still twitching. Despite this- she felt herself relax a bit as the nurse seemingly realized the girl's distress, and made it know that there was a fix to this mess. (Even if he could not recall said solution at this very moment.) Another wave of relief passed over the young girl at the familiar sight of her herbology professor- an adult that she at least had some experience with. The comfort that her presence provided was quickly erased, however, when Adeline processed the look of complete shock painted across her face. So it was as utterly unthinkable as she thought. Adeline's hand clasped over her "mouth" as Professor Sarai's tea glass shattered against the clamy floor, a spray of hot tea painted Addie's white socks brown.

The woman's face moved from shock to anger, her tone reflecting her increasingly agitated state. "Demon, who let you back into Hogwarts?" Her words zapped the life from the room- she was serious. Apparently, Mr. Baird had somehow not noticed Professor Professor Sarai, until this moment.

In a moment of surprise, the eccentric man Adeline would come to know as Octavius Baird cast another transformative spell- this time, turning Adeline's new friend into a portrait. Honestly, under different circumstances, and if she had a mouth, it would have made her laugh.

Panic began to rise as the Nurse slowly unraveled. He looked quite upset, disappointed, and
worst of all, afraid.

“Joseph, I’m sorry, crap how do I undo all this?” He looked to Professor Sarai, tears welling up in his eyes. Adeline's fear still remained, but was soon overshadowed by sympathy, relating to the man before her. She slowed her breathing to calm herself, before a simple, cheeky idea popped into her head.

She snapped her fingers towards the nurse a few times to get his attention, before "drawing" a smile across her face. She gave him a look of earnest sympathy, and did what she could to smile with her eyes. Despite it all, it was clear that this man did not have ill intentions. Besides this whole "missing mouth" thing wasn't entirely awful- it would make for an amazing campfire story.
