Breakfast Surprise
Jorah strolled into the Great Hall on another fine though brisk sunny morning at Hogwarts. The walk from Ravenclaw Tower was a bit lengthy, but he was getting used to it. As he walked down the aisle, he strained his eyes to see the large hourglasses stationed at the back of the hall. Well that's not good, he thought when he saw that the mound of rubies in Gryffindor's hourglass was larger than the mound of Ravenclaw's sapphires. We'll have to try harder if we want to hold onto the house cup.
Jorah found a nice spot facing the fireplace. He swung his legs over the wooden bench and plopped down at the Ravenclaw dinning table. Jorah watched the crackling fire dance and remembered all the times his family went camping. He would always volunteer to be the one in charge of fire-making. He would pretend to be a hearty Scottish lumberjack, chopping down more wood than he could carry and feeding those spoils to a new luminous friend. On those trips Jorah could have stayed up all night watching the fire if his parents had let him.
Grrrr, went Jorah's stomach, reminding him why he was here. Classes would be starting soon today so he'd have to hurry if he wanted a good breakfast. Jorah examined the table, taking in all that it had to offer. Aside from Quidditch and learning magic, this was his favorite part about Hogwarts, the breakfast buffet! Jorah scooped up some fluffy scrambled eggs unto his plate and grabbed a couple of brown flaky biscuits, drowning them in sausage gravy. He flopped on a pancake and balanced a wedge of French toast next to it. Where's the maple syrup, ah! He drizzled the sugary liquid onto his plate, licking the syrup that his fingers picked up from the bottle. He tracked down the butter and slapped it onto his plated carbs. Reaching across the table, he snatched up a small bowl of caramelized apple wedges. Almost done, he thought before finally topping off his meal with a few strips of crispy bacon.
Perfect!, he said in satisfaction. Jorah discreetly closed his eyes and bowed his head to give thanks for the deliciousness that was to come.

Breakfast Surprise
At home, the morning had been uncomplicated: tea and toast before she ran off to the muggle school in her local coastal town. At Hogwarts, however, breakfast was a feat. If there was Quidditch practice, Ruthie wouldn't mind so much, but under other circumstances, she was less excited to make the trek all the way from Ravenclaw Tower down to the Great Hall. Still, there was no other way to start the day and so she wandered down to the Great Hall in her school robes as if it were any other day.
When she arrived, the Great Hall was already full with others keen to start off their day. As she walked up the aisle, she scanned Ravenclaw Table for someone she knew, a friendly face with which to begin the day. Thankfully, she was quick to spot Jorah near the fire place. As she sat down next to him, she noticed his plate. "Are you planning on skipping lunch?" she asked, assuming there had to be a reason for adding this much to his plate at once. As she grabbed a plate for herself, she totally ignored the fact that the boy had closed his eyes and was clearly seeking some kind of solitude. Who wanted peace in the morning? After all, if they were all here together, they may as well talk to one another.
She began to serve herself, taking some black pudding, potato scones and a Scotch egg onto her plate. It was a happy accident that Hogwarts was in the highlands; she had a full Scottish breakfast to look forward to everyday, even if it was more time consuming than simple tea and toast.

Breakfast Surprise
Jorah recognized the voice of his Quidditch pal and chuckled at her question. He opened up his eyes to see the curly haired blonde sitting next to him. Good morning, Ru!, he said, giving her a one-armed sideways hug. He shoveled several forkfuls of eggs into his mouth and washed them down with a goblet of orange juice. No, I'm not skipping lunch, but they scheduled History of Magic right before it. I like the class, but its hard for me to focus on an empty stomach. You see that? He pointed at the hourglasses at the end of the hall. Gryffindor is beating us in house points! Gryffindor! He lowered his voice and checked to see if the coast was clear of any students clad in red. Of all the houses, it had to be those loud-mouthed buffoons. I'm not gonna let us miss out on points because I can't control my appetite. So consider this, he pointed at his plate, encircling it with his fork, my first and second breakfast.
Jorah began cutting into his biscuits, bringing them between his lips. Mmm hi hahv ha queshium...he took a sip and swallowed...have you finished the homework for Transfiguration, yet? He took another mouthful, but remembering he was in the presence of a lady, he covered his mouth with his hand this time. Hi herhh ha prohhesshor..he swallowed and put his hand down...is super strict when it comes to grading and I don't want to do all this work just to get crappy marks. Sorry, I'm trying to eat quickly so I'm not late for the first class."
Jorah broke his focus on his ravenous devouring to look over at Ruthie. She wasn't like the other girls, he thought. The other girls annoyed him, always complaining about things that didn't matter like how the school uniform was unfashionable or how they were missing Taylor Swift's latest album. It's almost like they forgot they were living in a freaking castle and learning magic. Ruthie was different, she was not only smart but she played quidditch and dodgeball. This wasn't a girl who was afraid to get dirty if she needed to. Jorah was happy they met at the sorting hat ceremony and later became friends. Is that all you're eating?, he pointed to her plate with his fork.

Breakfast Surprise
"Morning," she replied as she fell into Jorah's halfway hug. Anything but awkward, the boy was fast becoming one of her closest friends at the school, no matter how energetic he was at breakfast. Ruthie was used to early morning starts from helping her father out on the docks, but she'd never quite mustered the energy Jorah seemed to show this morning. She wondered if he'd always been like this or if 5am starts on the boat had become so commonplace to her that mornings seemed to have lost their wonder in some ways.
She was about to comment on History of Magic, a class she had basically neutral feelings about so far, when Jorah pointed fiercely towards the end of the hall. "I see it," I affirmed half-rhetorically. House points were important, of course, it was still rather early in the month to be panicking about falling behind. Cutting off a piece of a potato scone and dunking it in ketchup, she just sat and listened to his tirade. "Did some Gryffindor steal your beater's bat or something?" she asked him as she ate, "Don't worry, we've time to catch up." His passion she admired, but it seemed somewhat misguided. Yes, a Gryffindor had been responsible for her fall in the lake at dodgeball, but that hardly seemed a slight. Quite the contrary it was all part of the game. You had to leave feelings on the field.
As he declared this first and second breakfast, she couldn't help but chuckle. Looking around she plucked up an apple from the center of the table and pushed it in front of him. "Better take this with you," she said, "in case second breakfast wears off." An apple had saved her between courses before and she expected it might be something he'd want to remember to bring with him.
Her food seemed to stop in her throat as he asked about Transfiguration. It was not a class that was going particularly well for her thus far and to be honest, she was already developing a distaste for it. At least Jorah's words got caught on his food; it always brought a smile to her face when that happened. "You don't want to look at my notes or my homework," she said as she cut up her scotch egg, letting the meat fall to the sides. It was a statement, not a question. If he wanted to do well, he definitely did not want to look at her notes--at least not in Transfiguration. Herbology would be a different matter all together.
As she ate, she felt the tension of his latest question in the air. It wasn't just conversation, it was judging. Who was he, this boy who ate like a whale, to criticize her eating? "This is enough for me," she said, slyly grabbing an additional Scotch egg and some toast. But as she continued, she thought she might be coming off as confrontational, which wasn't appealing so for clarity she added, "We used to just have toast at home. It was the fastest way out of the house before school or the boat."
As she sat there, home seemed so far away even though in reality it was much closer than it was for other pupils. Hogwarts on the other hand had a wide arrange of events constantly. It was hard to keep them all straight. With a finger on her temple, she knew something important was coming up. "Isn't there some event coming up? Like a ball or something? Do you want to go together?" she asked him as she buttered her toast. It wasn't something she considered seriously at all. It just seemed like that was the sort of thing it might nice to have a friendly face around for, and there was no time like the present to get such matters sorted. And Jorah, well, he was a nice lad. Outwith the incident throwing popcorn in her face, but Ruthie didn't consider that. She didn't consider anything at all. Quite simply, she just felt comfortable asking him the question so she did.

Breakfast Surprise
Jorah sampled his caramelized apples with a strip of bacon. The sweet and salty combination was delectable. "Did some Gryffindor steal your beater's bat or something?", replied Ruthie. Jorah laughed at the idea. He wouldn't put it pass Gryffindor to try anything they could to get ahead in Quidditch, but luckily they hadn't stooped so low as to steal, at least, not yet. Ruthie offered him a red apple. Jorah preferred green apples, they were just sweeter in his opinion, but he thought her snack offer was a good suggestion. Hhanks, he said, pointing at the apple with a strip of bacon, he swallowed, but the green ones are better. When Ruthie declined to share her Transfig notes, Jorah thought it best to not mention the subject further. Ruthie was one of the smartest students he knew and if she was apprehensive about a course, then that all but confirmed his fears that the rumors were true. He'd just have to bite the bullet and take whatever mark the professor saw fit to give him. If it damaged his GPA, at least Jorah was in good company.
Though Ruthie said her food was enough for her, Jorah noticed her pick up another egg and piece of toast. He smiled and suppressed the opportunity to tease her about it, he was just happy she was eating more, the last thing a foodie like Jorah needed was to be best friends with a peckish girl worried about her weight or something. Speaking of food, the french toast was delicious. The house elves had done it again! Jorah was in the process of comparing the french toast against his pancake when Ruthie surprised him with a question that came out of nowhere. "Isn't there some event coming up? Like a ball or something? Do you want to go together?"
Jorah paused his internal food debate and looked up at Ruthie in disbelief. You want to go the ball? No offense Ru, but I didn't strike you as the ball going type of girl. Do you even own a dress? Jorah felt like he might have been a touch too free with his words there. He was comfortable with Ruthie, she was one of the few people he felt like he could be himself around. As a result, she was privy to the inner workings of his mind, curious comments that he would usually keep to himself, comments which could be misconstrued as judgmental. There's no denying Jorah could be judgmental, especially when it came to his rivals in red, but at that moment he was honestly just surprised that Ruthie wanted to go to the ball.
At the thought he may have offended her, he quickly added in, Umm, yeah sure. I think that's a good idea. To be honest I probably wasn't even going to go, but now that you mention it... it could be a nice break from the library. Plus, going with a friend is much less stressful. Now I don't have to worry about asking out one of those Ilvermorny girls. So strange, these Americans, you know they drive on the opposite side of the street?
Jorah finished his breakfast. It was the french toast, the french toast was definitely better. He made a mental note of that for next time. Jorah stood from the table ready to head for class. He grabbed Ruthie's apple, gave it a slight toss into the air, before catching it and tucking it away into the pocket of his cloak. I think it starts at 7:00. Do you want to meet me outside the ballroom around 7:30? If not, that's fine, you decide. Jorah waited for Ruthie's response and for her to gather her things so that they could leave the Great Hall together.

Breakfast Surprise
Green ones are better. Really. This was worth debating? "Green apples are sour," she retorted. It was her real opinion, but she wouldn't have minded if it became a very real tangent because the prospect of returning to homework and courses, particularly were transfiguration was concerned, was simply not something she wanted to do. In fact, she was glad the course wasn't on her schedule for the day. That was tomorrow's battle.
She continued buttering her toast, completely ignorant of any surprise that may have run across Jorah's face when he considered her question. After all, it was a simple question. There was a ball. You brought friends to ball. Jorah was her friend, in fact one of her closest friends. What could ever be complicated or shocking about any of that? And yet by his words, he was obviously surprised. "Well, my sister Kirsty might have a few more," she started, slightly hurt, "but she's not old enough for Hogwarts yet so you're stuck with me." Perhaps that phrasing was forward--she hadn't meant it as a date or anything--but Ruthie had a talent for being blunt, especially when annoyed. Jorah wasn't wrong--when not in her Hogwarts robes, her usual outfit was jeans and a hoodie, and she enjoyed sports more than parties--yet there was something about the way his comment hung in the air that didn't sit well with her. She bit on her toast hard. Funny, somehow (semi-frequent) criticism from Jorah always seemed to sting more than that from the rest of her peers.
Her fingers wrapped tightly around her fork, she seemed to be eating more quickly too. Unlike her companion, she was in no rush to get to class. It was a reflex from frustration. She really ought to think a bit more before speaking. As she chewed on a potato scone and ketchup, she heard him processing this idea. And it was, indeed, a process for him. At the notion of asking one their Ilvermony guests, her eyebrows furrowed into a wrinkle. Was he seriously putting this much thought into one evening? "Yeah, I heard that," she replied in a cursory, slightly annoyed manner.
He finished ahead of her. This was surprising because he had consumed at least twice what she had. At the same time, it was easily predictable because as she was chewing, she was listening. And listening took a lot more effort and a lot more time. Especially when some people were being silly. If she could have gotten into his head, she would have encouraged him to consider Occam's Razor: it was simplest that they should go together. But in the time she'd spent chewing and grinding her teeth, he had, apparently, come around. As she took a napkin to clean her mouth, she stood up and grabbed her things, swinging her plum satchel over her shoulder. "Sure," she said with a kind smile on her face, "that sounds perfect." Even with the effort it had taken, the patience listening to him, she was glad. Because despite his flaws, Jorah remained one of her best friends in the school and surely, it would be better to attend something strange and fancy and magical with someone like that rather than alone or with a stranger.
