Flying...Gone Wrong

Weekend before Easter

It was Saturday morning and Clarke was walking down to the flying grounds. She had just received a school broom from the storage and was now waiting for her other two friends to arrive. Incidentally, Clarke hadn't told Felix that Charles Azure was going to be joining them today. Charles was okay with Felix coming so hopefully Felix would be okay with Charles joining them.

Clarke practised for a few minutes on the broom while waiting for the boys to arrive. She managed to lift off a few feet from the ground this time. It made Clarke feel a little queasy seeing the ground from higher up. She tried multiple times to make the broom go higher, but she didn't know how to do it.

"Helloooo, broom, I want to go higher," Clarke told the broom sarcastically, rolling her eyes. Her North Dublin accent was thick in the warming weather. Clarke had her hair tied back in a high bun to keep it out of her face while flying.

She landed on the ground again and got off the broom. She looked around. There was no sign of Felix or Charles yet.

She decided to wait a little longer. Getting on the broom again, Clarke tried to fly higher this time. She kicked off the ground, seeing if that would work. It did and when Clarke was high enough, she could see a lot of the school grounds. It was beautiful from higher up. Clarke tried to ignore the feeling she got when staring straight down. Every once in a while, she would peek down to try and not get that feeling. Soon, it became better. All Clarke was doing though was sitting on her broom in mid air. She didn't dare move around yet.

Clarke lowered herself back to the ground again. Still no sign of the boys. What was taking them so long to come? Had they forgotten? Maybe they didn't want to come after all. Clarke sat down on the grass that was still recovering from the winter snow. She laid her broom down beside her. The next moment she stood up again. She decided that if the boys weren't going to come and help her learn to ride a broom, she would teach herself.

Clarke hopped on the broom once again and flew up. She tried pushing the broom forward in order for it to actually move. It jerked forwards. Clarke almost lost her balance. She tried again. A little harder this time. She went zooming off in the direction her broom was pointed. Then it stopped suddenly. Clarke flew head over heels over the front of the broom. She was falling, trying to grab onto the broom to stop herself. She screamed. The ground was coming up faster and faster. The next thing Clarke knew was that there was a big pain in her head and ribs. Her arms felt stiff and she couldn't move her legs.

Clarke tried to open her eyes but the light was blinding so she kept them closed, hoping that someone would find her lying here.

In the end, no one is going to remember what you wore or what you did with your hair that day; they are going to remember how you made them feel.

Charles Azure used morning air on Saturday to fly to his designated flying zone as he felt intense excitement in his stomach. For Charles flying day marked an important achievement because he spent the whole week motivated to learn more aviation skills from Clarke and Felix. At the starting point of his flight Charles Azure went to obtain his broomstick from the facility's storage space found in the clearing's centre.

“Time to show them what I can do!” he muttered to himself, a grin spreading across his face. Through swift and purposeful movement he descended from the ground level as wind masses rushed around him before he attained sufficient flying height. The training grounds below his course appeared when he stopped to observe both educational facilities and their surrounding environment.

“Where are you guys?” he shouted, scanning the area for any sign of his friends. The perfect control Harry had over his broom enabled fast-moving wind currents around his body while he flew at this height. While flying at this height Harry noticed an unusual sight on the fields that made him realise Clarke had left his broom unstitched on the lawn.

Concern gripped his entire body because of the situation. “Clarke!” he called out, searching frantically. There was no answer. He could maintain low flight altitude which brought him optimism to see his friends. The person lay unconscious while the field boundary exposed their face to the open air when Harry passed by during his flight.

“Clarke!” he yelled, a sense of dread creeping in. Attaining quick velocity level he controlled his descending path till he landed by her feet to remove the broom from her hand.

He came across Clarke when he saw her still body on the floor during his approach while he knelt down next to her. “Clarke!” he shouted again, urgency lacing his voice. He tried to awaken her by rubbing her shoulders with his palm. “Clarke, can you hear me?”

His pulse accelerated when she refused to reply to him. As he checked her health he paid attention to the bruise that was forming on her forehead. “What happened?” he muttered, more to himself than to her.

Despite his nerves he maintained a steady voice which told her to keep still because he intended to get assistance after that. The wand came out of his pocket to summon help precisely at the time he would cast his spell. “You’re going to be alright. Just hold on.”

A bright beam ascended into the sky through his magical creation since he needed to signal passersby for assistance. “Help is on the way,” he promised, keeping his eyes locked on her.

“Just breathe, Clarke,” he urged, feeling a surge of determination. “I won’t leave you.”

The man utilised his time waiting for help to reassure the hurt woman that everything would work out well. His fear attempted to overwhelm him but he decided to hide all signs of apprehension. At the moment Clarke needed his support he decided to stay with her because help had not arrived yet.

Returning to the castle having finished his patrols, the Ravenclaw prefect deviated from his typical routine. Normally he would take the most direct route to the castle but today he decided to take the long way. There was much on his mind approaching the Easter break and he figured the fresh air would do him well.

Today his path would take him through the flying grounds where no doubt students of various skill levels would be practicing on school brooms or their own. Cassius' own Starsweeper XXI was securely stored in his dormitory room and though he did not compete on any house broom-sport teams, he considered himself to be fairly good on a broom. If duelling did not end up working out, he would put serious consideration into trying out for either the quidditch or broom racing team.

The walk back to the castle had been uneventful. That is until he heard the scream. Some distance away on the flying grounds, a group of students had begun to congregate in a loose circle. Prefect instincts kicked in and Cassius rushed towards the group. As he approached he could see two individuals on the ground. A girl, seemingly in some pain, and a boy comforting her. He did not recognize either as being from his house.

"Make way!" The Ravenclaw prefect shouted at the group of onlookers as he approached the scene. They were reluctant to part at first until they saw the prefect badge prominently stitched onto Cassius' school robes. He pushed through and crouched down on the ground next to the injured girl.

"You," Cassius said to Charles as he conducted a brief examination of the injured student. "What happened?" He was no healer and had only a basic understanding of injuries, but his experience duelling gave him some insight into some of the more creative and painful ways one could be injured. From even his quick glance, he could tell the girl's injuries were worse than some easily healed bruises.

"Right then. Can you hear me? What is your name?" He asked Clarke as kindly as he was able to. Nobody would ever claim that Cassius had impeccable bedside manner. His touch, however, was gentle as he lifted the girl into his arms. "There there. You will be okay, little one. Let's get you to the infirmary." As he rose to his feet, he glanced at Charles. "You are her friend? Come with us."

Stepping forward, the small crowd of students dispersed as Cassius carried the injured student to the infirmary for some urgent medical care.

Another voice appeared out of the din. This one sounded like the owner had authority, Clarke thought subconsciously. Clarke came in and out of consciousness as she was carried up the hill towards the castle. The light was blinding and caused the searing pain in her head grow worse.

Slowly, all the noise faded away, and the only sound to be heard was footsteps crunching in the grass and the birds chirping in the light breeze.

She didn't rouse from her sleep until the nurse had worked her magic on Clarke. She blinked in the dim light of the hospital wing, looking around. Clarke pushed herself up and leaned against the head of the bed. The pounding in her head had decreased drastically, for which she was very thankful. She then noticed someone standing beside the dividing curtains. For a second, Clarke couldn't think of who would want to see her, but then he stepped into the light and she could see that it was Charles.

"Hi Charles," she said, weakly. "Why am I here?" She couldn't remember why her head hurt or why she was in this bed. Hopefully Charles had some answers and hopefully she could leave soon to continue her schoolwork and go back to Ireland for Easter break. Oh, how she couldn't wait to see her family again!

Clarke fiddled with the bed covers as whe waited for his answer.
