Hey Thora,

So, this isn't exactly something I do a lot. Writing abroad, I mean. Or even just having a pen pal. I'm not sure if this is something you've done before or not, but if it isn't, then we can learn how to do this together. If it is, then I guess you can tell me how that went for you. Either way, I think this should go well. Hopefully it does, anyway.

Anyway, I'm Jeremiah Lucero. I know, it's a weird name. My parents must have thought they were being really creative and original when I was born. But that aside, I'm a fourth year in Ilvermorny, and I'm also in Thunderbird. They're the crazy people. Okay, maybe they're not actually crazy, but a lot of them are pretty reckless brave. I haven't really checked how your houses in Hogwarts work, but I can give you a rundown on mine and see if there's anything similar with yours.

I already told you that Thunderbird was the crazy brave people. There's also Horned Serpent. They're the nerds of the school. They're actually pretty smart though, I'll give them that. Then there's Wampus. They're supposed to be pretty strong, I think. The type of people who won't back down in an argument until they get their point across. They're cool. And finally, Pukwudgie. I'll admit, it took a while for me to spell that right the first few times. But yeah, they're the nice people. Pretty sure I've seen some of them give out free cookies last year. Can't really remember. I don't think I was there for most of it.

Those were the houses in Ilvermorny. You guys might have something similar. And speaking of that, what's it like in Hogwarts? Has there been anything weird going on in there? Ilvermorny definitely has had some of its weird moments (then again, what could you expect from a magic school?) but other than that, everything's okay, probably. The school hasn't burned down in chaos and anarchy so far, so that's good.

Anyway, I'm not really sure what else to say about myself. I guess I like to draw, but that's really the only interesting thing I could think off the top of my head right now. I like the colour green? They say that green inspires creativity, but I just think it's a nice colour. I live on coffee, and if I don't get enough coffee, I get too cranky and people think I hate them when really, I just want to find a place to nap for the next 15 years and forget the impending doom that is life. I don't have too many friends, and the ones that stay friends with me either tolerate me or find it hilarious to annoy me. It doesn't work most of the time, but they certainly try hard.

I don't really know what else to talk about. It's weird, talking to a stranger all the way across a different country. But hey, it's a new experience. Can't be any worse than that. But before I end this letter, I'm going to attach a picture of myself. Is that what people do? Maybe this can give you a better visual on who you're talking to so it's not like you're talking to some spooky ghost lurking in the shadows somewhere.

Well, I'll see you soon then. Or at least be looking forward to your reply since, well, I can't really see you right now. Ha. Lame joke, I know.

From,

Hi Jeremiah,

Honestly, me neither. I don't really contact people that I don't see everyday. Yeah, hopefully this goes well...

I'm Thora Larkston, second year at Hogwarts. I'm more than a tad quiet in person, I guess, and I'm in Slytherin House. We sneks are supposed to be witty and determined. So, maybe our houses have some similarities? So, Gryffindor are the brave and super reckless (I guess?) people. Ravenclaws are the smart people, always the top of the class. Hufflepuffs are super loyal, and probably the most friendly. Sounds like Pudwudgie from your description :) . I mean, I'm not one to be stereotypical, though, because just because you're sorted into one house doesn't mean your condemned to their characteristics, right?

Anyways, a little about myself. I like to paint (but not drawing, I can never get the shadows right). My favorite color is turquoise and I guess green's okay. I've also taken to black, because, well, we kind of have to wear if every day. So yeah, there's not much about me. Yeah :)  There is definitely a ton of drama at our school, but we've all survived so far, so it can't be that bad, right?

Um, yeah, I guess. Like I said before, I'm not the best at this letter-writing stuff. Good idea, though, I guess I'll attach a picture of me too so you can know what I look like. Typical redhead, basically. So, this might sound like a weird question, but do you have ghosts at Ilvermorny? What's it like in America? I wouldn't know--I haven't been there before. So yeah, hopefully we can talk again soon :) .

Sincerely,

Hey again,

Did I hear read that right? You people are called 'sneks'? Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad thing. In fact, it's pretty hilarious. But anyway, you're right on both accounts. Ravenclaw sounds exactly like Horned Serpent, and Hufflepuff is pretty much Pukwudgie. I guess Gryffindor's like Thunderbird and Slytherin's Wampus? I guess there are some similarities that overlap, though there are differences that set them apart. And I agree that our houses don't define who we are. I mean, heck, I'm a Thunderbird, and I wouldn't jump off a cliff even if all my other friends did, and it'd be a pretty dull existence if we all acted according to what traits our houses are known for.

Wow, painting. To be honest, I have a hard time with painting. It's easier for me to draw because it's nice to play around with shading and seeing what fits and what doesn't. It's also easy to erase, although you still have to be careful so your drawing doesn't smudge or look like a hot mess afterwards. But you can't really erase anything with painting. One wrong move and you'll have to deal with an annoying dot of red on a canvas with a blue sky. Of course, you can cover it up so it looks prettier, but when you're dealing with something with a lot of detail and extra layers, it may or may not end up looking pleasant in the end. But who knows? Maybe I'm just complete garbage at painting and I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Oh, so there is drama at your school? And judging by your other statement about surviving, I'm guessing it's not you run-of-the-mill school gossip that ruins people's social lives? But in all seriousness, if you don't want to talk about it too much, I won't be too offended. Although I am curious as to what horrors you people faced there in Hogwarts. I could tell you about some things happening in Ilvermorny if that makes you feel any better. Or if you don't want to hear me ramble any further, then that's okay too, I guess.

Are there ghosts in Ilvermorny? I don't really know. I don't do enough ghost hunting to check if there are any that happen to lurk around the place. Well, not that I do to begin with. Do you have ghosts in the UK then? What are they like? Are they the spooky ghosts who try to scare you to death or do they just like making people suffer by messing with the lights or something? Or do they just not care about you people in the mortal realm?

Well, I don't really know what to say about America. At least where I live, it's pretty busy. There's always people on the streets wherever you go, and it can be pretty crowded at certain hours. It's kind of an inconvenience, but to other people, it can be fun to be in a bustling and loud environment. To each their own, I guess. But other than that, there isn't a lot of other things that stand out, I think. What's it like where you live? I don't know too much about Britain, but it sounds nice, I think.

Also, what classes do you have at Hogwarts? Are they any different from our classes at Ilvermorny? Is there anything else you people do at Hogwarts? I'd try to think of some other questions to ask you, but I'm pretty brain-dead at the moment, and I really need to do my homework and study for my tests. So, I'll end it here for now. I guess I'll talk to you soon.

Yours truly,

Hi Jeremiah,

I guess so. I mean, we Slytherins are called both sneks and snakes. It's kind of depends on the person :) ... Do you guys have any "nicknames" for your houses? When I heard about your houses, I immediately thought of Horned Serpent like Slytherin, except it turns out they're completely different?? Anyways, there are stereotypes at our school too. Apparently we Slytherins are supposed to be "evil" or something. Honestly, there are some pretty shady Slytherins, but plenty (like me :) ) are completely fine.

Oh, you draw too? I've met a few people who draw at Hogwarts. It looks so hard. I can paint, yeah, but I don't really know how to do shadows on drawings. Maybe mine always look bad since I smudge them... But painting for me comes easy. I guess it's just a person to person thing :) .

Oh yeah, we have a LOT of drama at our school, actually. Um, I don't really care how much I tell you because I actually don't take part in a lot of it. I guess you could call me socially detached? Well, our school has "graduation parties" and balls and such (of course I don't go to them), and something always happens. I heard there were dementors at the Blossomball (do you guys have a Blossomball? Anyways, it's in the spring) and someone tried to light disco balls at fire during the First Year Graduation Party? Anyways, everything seems to end up a mess here. How 'bout at Ilvermorny?

Yep, Hogwarts has ghosts. I mean, I don't know about you guys, but they weren't like what I thought they would be like. I kind of expected a creepy half-clear blob, I guess. Turns out, they're literally people, just see-through. It's kind of creepy when you first see one--I jumped when one talked to me. And then it started laughing. But I guess you learn something new every day!

Hogwarts is great, I think. It's on some remote Scottish island, so there's not much traffic--no Muggle transportation and such. Of course, there's always the bottleneck of older students running around, but that's another problem. I live out in the country, so I've never really known the enjoyment of a busy city. Is it really fun? I think it's really cool to be out in the fields, but sometimes I do get lonely...

First and second years have Charms, Potions, Transfiguration, Defense of the Dark Arts, History of Magic, Astronomy, Herbology, and Flying? Our electives are Care of Magical Creatures, Divination, Study of Ancient Runes, and Muggle Studies. Does Ilvermorny have the same classes? I wouldn't know... No, it's totally fine. I always feel like that when I'm doing homework. So I just go and paint :) . If you don't want to answer this, it's fine, it could be personal. What do you like doing when you're lonely? Like, if you have no one to go to, what do you do? I'm sorry, I'm a really bad question-asker...

So, I've heard rumors that a few students from Ilvermorny get to come visit us? Are you one of them? Have you heard anything about it? It sounds... exciting? And definitely a chance for more drama. Well, hope we can talk (owl?) again soon!

Sincerely,
