The Missing Ring
Mikey had been in the study room trying to find some peace to finish his homework. He had sat down in the open seat next to another first year that he had seen in class but hadn't really talked to before. He was pretty sure her name Nova Astron but that was the extent of his knowledge and he didn't really bother to know more. He had homework to focus on anyway.
He managed to get into a rhythm with his writing and zone in on the report. He absent mindedly slipped off the ring his father had given him before starting school and rolled it between his knuckles. This was a comforting habit he had adopted while doing school work and it seemed to help keep him focused on the task at hand. Mikey continued to work on his paper until he felt satisfied he would receive an O for his work and began to pack his things. He did a quick check to make sure he had everything and it seemed like he did until his thumb slid down his ring finger on his right hand.
His ring! His ring was no longer on his finger. He looked on the table where he was working but there was nothing there. He checked the floor, the chairs, and asked other students but it was nowhere to be found. He remembered sitting next to Nova and his heart sank. "She wouldn't have taken it would she?" Mikey didn't like jump to conclusions as a rule but he was not thinking clearly lost in a panic as he was.
Running out of the study room he caught a glimpse of Nova's brown and blonde hair at the end of the hall. He continued running and yelled "Hey!" once he was close enough he knew she would hear. She looked confused and shocked to be yelled at by another student running down the hall but Mikey didn't have time or the will to be pleasant. "Give it back!" He said holding out his hand and making fierce eye contact.

The Missing Ring
Nova had been having a good day. A really good one. She had gotten most of her homework done, the procrastination demons hadn't come for her, and it seemed like nothing could go wrong—until some bastard started yelling at her.
She was minding her own business, walking down the hall, probably thinking about how she was going to reward herself with some chocolate later when she heard it. The sound of someone out for blood. Preferably hers. She stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes wide with confusion as she turned around to see who it was.
She didn't expect to see the kid who had sat next to her in the empty study room when there were dozens of others to choose from. She hadn't thought anything of it, didn't even particularly care, yet the same guy was running after her like she had kicked his cat when he wasn't looking.
What did I do? I was just sitting there and doing my work! I think in a panic, trying to figure out how I would plead my case to Judge Judy's furious male counterpart. I hadn't even looked up! Who does he think he is?
I start to get annoyed when he gets close and practically screams at me, jabbing his hand for me to hand over whatever sacred object it was he thought I apparently had.
Hello? What are you talking about? What exactly is it you want me to give back to you?" I say defensively, my tone annoyed as I tried hard not to glare at him. He couldn't just come up to random people and start yelling at them!
"I don't even know what you're talking about." I continue, shoving my books into my bag before crossing my arms. He didn't get to accuse me of stealing, especially with no proof whatsoever. "You don't have to yell. I can hear you just fine if you talk at a decibel lower than 80." I figured he'd realize he was being irrational soon enough, but until then, I wasn't backing down.

The Missing Ring
"My ring!" Mikey shouted once more trying to get ahold of himself. "My ring." He said a second time in a much calmer if not friendlier voice. He knew better than to yell at someone over and over and expect them to suddenly become helpful but he was so mad he was shaking. Mikey began to take slow deep breaths trying to cool his nerves and douse the flames of his anger before he made things worse and never saw the ring again. After a few quick seconds, his vision cleared and his heart rate slowed. Not enough to be considered relaxed but enough to reel in his anger a bit. Feeling in a better place to communicate effectively he decided to crack on.
"Look I know you took my ring." He said keeping his voice calm. "I don't know why you took it and frankly I don't care. But I need it back. Please." Giving himself a mental pat on the back for being able to regain some composure in the situation he held out his hand expectantly. He looked the girl dead in the eyes and said once more "Please give me my ring back it was a gift from my father." He maintained eye contact almost pleading to her with his eyes.

The Missing Ring
Nova stared at him, utterly baffled. What in the world? Why would I take a ring from someone I don't even know? Do I look like a pickpocket or something? She sighed with a slight annoyance, not appreciating the obliteration of her happiness.
"I don't even know you, why would I steal from someone I don't know?" She points out, trying to get out of this stupid argument and back to her Common Room. "Besides, you're the one who sat next to me, not the other way around."
Could he have only sat next to me to accuse me of stealing? Is that even possible? What could he possibly get out of this? Her eyes narrowed in skepticism and suspicion as she thinks. The boy spoke again, his voice calmer now. "Look, I know you took my ring."
How would he know something that isn't even true? Nova let out a small scoff at the absurdity of it all. "I don't have it!" She says in exasperation, her voice rising. "I wouldn't even still BE here if I had stolen it. Do you really think if I stole your ring, I'd still be in the same corridor as you? I would've left by now."
She stops abruptly, realizing she sounds like she has a lot of experience in thievery, and begins to backtrack. "Not that I stole it, though." She feels a bit sorry for him when he mentions the ring being a gift.
"I really don't know what you want me to do, I don't have it." She replies, a bit upset her perfect day had been ruined, though his was probably worse right now. "Maybe actually get some evidence that I stole it before accusing me? Just a suggestion."
She reached for her bag, shaking it slightly. "Hear that? No sound of a ring in there. Just books, parchment, and quills."

The Missing Ring
Mikey’s jaw clenched as he listened, every word Nova said slicing into him deeper than he wanted to admit. Each explanation, each attempt to reason with him, just made the anger and hurt inside him churn hotter and faster. A small, rational part of him the one he was determined to ignore knew she was probably telling the truth. But he couldn’t face that, not now. It was like the ground had been pulled out from under him.
His chest tightened painfully with frustration and helplessness, a sickening mix he couldn’t untangle. He felt like a balloon stretched to its limit, the pressure of everything, of the missing ring, of his own guilt and fear ready to make him explode.
"You don't get it," he said, voice low, shaking slightly with the effort to hold himself together. His fists curled tightly at his sides, nails biting into his palms. He stared at her, searching her face desperately for some crack, some glimmer that she was lying or had hidden something. But all he saw was confusion. Maybe even pity.
That made it worse.
Something inside him snapped. He shook his head sharply, as if he could physically shake the emotions out of his skull, but they clung tighter. "Forget it," he muttered bitterly, voice rough with emotion. Without waiting for her to respond, Mikey turned on his heel and stormed off down the corridor, his bag bouncing painfully against his side with every furious step.
He didn’t look back. He couldn’t. If he did, he wasn’t sure he could hold himself together anymore.

The Missing Ring
Nova gaped at him in shock. She hadn't exactly expected him to just walk off in barely contained rage. Maybe some rude back and forth, but not just complete defeat. Her mouth hung open for a second too long before she snapped it shut, jaw tightening.
She narrowed her eyes at his retreating form, willing him to feel her stare. Maybe if she glared hard enough, it’d knock some common sense into his thick skull. He stormed off like he'd just been the one wronged, like she hadn't just been ambushed, accused, and emotionally wrecked in the middle of the hallway for existing near him.
Any pity she had had for him had left, leaving her filled with a mix of anger and confusion. She wanted to yell out and tell him how completely stupid he was for yelling at someone, then walking away like he had won some battle she wasn't even fighting.
With a huff, she began walking in the other direction from the hallway. She didn't mind taking the long way to the Common Room if it meant she wouldn't run into the guy.
Did he seriously think I just snuck it off his hand in the middle of writing an essay? She thought seethingly, her annoyance growing with every step she took. Why not accuse me of stealing his wand as well while he’s at it? The thing that I most likely stole from him was his brain, seeing how he clearly didn't have it with him.
Nova paused at the top of the stairs, eyes narrowing again as she glanced back one more time, just to make sure he was really gone. The hallway was empty. Silent. Still.
“Next time,” she muttered to herself, gripping the handle of her bag like it owed her money. Or maybe an apology, like a special someone. “He'd better come with actual evidence. And maybe a brain cell or two.”
She shook her head and started down the stairs, already planning what she’d say the next time she saw him. If he didn’t apologize, she wasn’t above making him squirm.
He owes me an apology. And if he thinks I'm going to let this go, he is seriously mistaken.
