Dear Donovan Salinger,

Hello! It’s me, your pen pal. My name is Catriona. It’s very nice to meet you! (I’ve included a transcript of this letter below in case you can’t read my handwriting.) Pretty soon I’ll have to start borrowing my friend Gem’s typewriter.

I’m eleven years old, but I’ll be twelve in December (the 17th to be exact). What’s it like being 14? Do you know all the secrets of the universe? (That was a joke; if you are somehow an omniscient being, please let me know.) Tell Jim I said hello and also that I think he’s wrong. But that’s ok, we can agree to disagree.

I don’t think I’m especially smart, so I suppose I’ll just continue being rather average and we’ll get on rather well. I will say, however, that I very much enjoyed the doodles on your letter. You seem very funny (I laughed out loud in the library and a 3rd year looked at me strangely).

I can’t pretend to know a ton about music, but I listen occasionally. The Beatles are really good! I haven't heard much hair metal, but I won’t check it out if it’s truly that bad. I’m glad you don’t like sexist pieces of garbage. I don’t either. I say we band together and kidnap Axl Rose.

Hogwarts is nice. I’m just a first year, so I haven’t been here long, but I’ve made a couple friends, which is nice. I’ve got two older siblings who’ve graduated already: Will and Freddie. Freddie’s great, though she gets herself in trouble a lot. Will is great too. He’s very eloquent and much more posh than I am. He gripes about Freddie’s table manners every time she comes home to visit. It’s rather entertaining, actually.

Write back soon! It was very nice talking (or writing I guess) to you! I’m a Ravenclaw, by the way. Contrary to popular belief, we are not know it alls.

I got some new stationary! I know this makes me sound lame, but I'm excited about it anyways.

I am indeed eleven! I've never been told I write like an old lady. I reckon it's because of all those lines I had to do when I was in primary school. Also my family's one of those pureblood posh types. I had to take dance lessons when I was younger too. I'm glad you like my handwriting though. That's probably also because of the pureblood thing. My parents were very strict about education (but not about parenting, since they're gone most of the time).

It's nice that you like your uncle, but I'm sorry your parents gave you up. What's he like? If it's any consolation, I kind of know how you feel. I mentioned it before, I think, but my parents aren't around much. It's ok though, I like being on my own.

I'm glad you've made some friends (and I hope I'm counted amongst them). If not, that's fine too! Just know that I'm here for you if you need me. RIP to Jim, but I can't say that I'll miss him. Your gravestone drawing was quite nice, though!

I have a couple of friends: Lark, James (kind of), Charlotte, and Gem (who I mentioned before. I don't think I have a crush on anyone, though everyone seems to think I like Gem. I don't know... I like him, but it doesn't feel anything like how I imagined it being. It's definitely not like I read about.

Delia? Delia is a very nice name! What's she like? (And why is she a meathead?) I like Amy Winehouse too, by the way. She is very cool.
