@Carra MacKinnon
Dear Hogwarts,
Hello! My name is Novus Esnos- I'm a thirteen year old student in the Illvermony School of Whitchcraft and Wizardry. I'm writing under a pen pal program that I assume you know about (I was assigned you specifically, after all).
I've never really done anything even remotely similar to this before, but I'm pretty sure that I'm meant to tell you a bit about myself. I'm in my third year at Illvermony in the Horned Serpent house. My hobbies include (but are not limited to) reading, playing chess, and drawing. I tend to not be a very social person, though I do have two close friends that I meet up with nearly every day.
I know that it wasn't a very good description, but it's the best I have. Honestly, I'm just excited to hear what you're like! I've always wanted to learn at your school and meet the British wizarding society, and I hope that this will be an appertunity for us both to learn something new.
Hope to hear from you soon-
Novus Esnos

Dear Novus,
It's a pleasure to meetcha! I was very excited when I learned I'd be a part of the pen pal program with Illvermony. I've sooo many questions to ask you, honestly, I don't quite know where to begin!
Oh, I'm Carra by the way, Carra MacKinnon to be exact. I would tell you my middle name, but I don't really care for it. So I won't. Anyway, I'm eleven and this is my first year at Hogwarts and I'm in Hufflepuff house (our mascot is the Badger!). Still trying to figure everything out here. If this is your third year, you must know loads more things than I do!
What are all the houses at Illvermony? I didn't even learn about the houses at Hogwarts until I arrived. I seem to remember that you guys also have four houses. I wonder if any of them are the same as the ones that Hogwarts has. How does your sorting ceremony go? We've got a talking hat that was supposed to be enchanted by one of the founders of Hogwarts! That would make the hat insanely old!
I've been asking you all these questions and completely forgot to mention anything about myself. Let me remedy that! I'm a muggle-born witch, none of my other family members have magic. You call muggles no-majs right? Anyway, that came as quite a shock to us all. I think it's pretty amazing! I like to read too, I've never really played chess, though wizard chess looks much more interesting than ordinary chess. I have a friend here at Hogwarts who likes drawing too! He's pretty great at it.
I'm what you might call a 'social butterfly', I love being around people. I've got a few friends here at Hogwarts so far, and I'm sure I'm going to make a ton more. My friends tell me that I talk to much sometimes, and that I ask too many questions. I hope I'm not boring you, let me know if I'm writing too much. I like to be outdoors most of the time, and love to explore anything and everything. There's so many places to explore, the castle has a million rooms, and I'm sure I haven't found half of them yet! Is Illvermony very big? Does it have moving stairs like Hogwarts?
Oh! I almost forgot to mention, I'm on the Hufflepuff Quidditch team! Just got put as the second string keeper! I only play if the first string keeper can't, but it's loads of fun. Does Illvermony have Quidditch teams?
Whoops, I think I've probably written too much, sorry about that. The time just flew! It was great to meet you and I can't wait for your next reply!
Your new friend,

To live will be an awfully big adventure

Dear Carra,
I like that name. It's nice.
Though it's true that I'm a third year and probably have more expirience with magic then you overall, I believe that there are always things that others can teach you.
To answer your questions, I've written the next portion of the letter in bullet points. Sorry. I'm too tired at the moment to write a cohesive paragraph. I've been busy all day, and this is my first chance to write back- so I obviously took it, even if it's so late.
1. Illvermony is pretty heavily inspired by Hogwarts in several ways. Houses is one of them. We do actually have four houses, which I'll list (along with their defining characteristics below)
Horned Serpent- Represents the mind, favors scholars
Wampus- Represents the body, favors warriors
Pukwudgie- Represents the heart, favors healers
Thunderbird- Represents the soul, favors adventurers.
What are your houses like?
2. Our sorting ceremony is a bit different from yours, from what I've gathered. Each first year stands at the center of a room when it's their turn, and waits for one of four statues to react in a certain way. The horned serpent statue has a gem that glows when it wants a student, the Thunderbird beats it's wings, the Wampus roars, and the Pukwudgie raised it's arrow.
Something that can happen that I doubt can happen in Hogwarts is that two or more statues react. In cases like those, the student gets to pick which of them he wants to join.
The term "NoMaj" is what we use here, yes, but I don't mind if you use Muggle instead. Anyways, I live with my father, a wizard, so it wasnt really that surprising when I got my invitation to Illvermony.
I'm quite the opposite of a social butterfly. Like I said, I have friends, but I generally prefer to stay on my own. I do enjoy exploring illvermony though. It's a bit smaller then Hogwarts, from what ive heard, but that doesn't meant it's not huge. There are still times when I stumbled across rooms or corridors that I had never noticed before, and that's always pretty damn exciting.
Illvermony does have quidditch teams, though if I'm being honest, I'm not very into sports. I do think that it's awesome that you're on the team though. How many games have you played so far?
One last thing- Supposedly, we're going to be visiting you guys soon. From what I hear, there's gonna be some sort of ball. You seem nice, and I don't have a date, so I was wondering if you would want to go with me? If not, that's alright.
Excited to visit,
Novus Esnos
