SEPTEMBER 2024, second half

Dear Bea,

How is it going? I hope all is well!

I don't think I've had the chance to connect your face to your name yet, sadly. You're a Gryffindor right? I mean, I could definitely go around all Gryffindors after the lessons, and ask them if they're you. But they could prank me, because Gryffies tend to prank people (have you noticed?!).

Anyway, apart from running a facial recognition (haha), I've been doing quite... well, busy. School is difficult. I mean, who on earth would manage to transform a whistle into a watch, or... or a snail into a teapot, on their first try?! Except for people like Charles, the rest of us is normal and.. Gallopin' Gorgons, I just can't cope with Transfig!

But apart from that, school's fine. I mean, first Herbology was super cool, right? With the Mandrakes crying like babies, haha. Would use some spell to silence them, or there are stones... haha.

How is school going for you?

I'd love to learn something about your family though! Tell me as much as you can, I love families, especially large ones!
Have you got any siblings? I have two! It's hard with 'em sometimes, because I've gotta share my room with my younger sister who doesn't like it when I read at night, and spends plenty of time in the bathroom in the morning (no more than my brother tho, his hairdo always has to be perfect). But overall, they're all cool.

Well, that's all for today! Gotta go out, get some flowers on the Grounds. 'Cause my dormmate somehow poured something smelly on her bedside table, which is close to my bed, so I can smell it. Ew! Wanna beat the stink with the smell of some wildflowers.

Wish me luck!

See ya soon,

Luce

Free from every homework she had been assigned today, Bea was rolling aimlessly on her dormitory bed. This was something she liked about herself; while she was not much of a studious child, she was punctual with her work, a trait she had inherited from her ambitious mother.

She got off the bed to grab her paint, brushes and canvas from the trunk. But before she could even reach out for it, something on the window caught her attention.
"un búho?" an owl? she mumbled, her eyes lit up, at the cuteness of the owl and at the fact that she recieved a letter.. Her eyes lit up when she saw it had a letter attached to its tiny foot. Bea thought it was from her father, but as she took it, she realised someone else had sent it to her.

Who could it be?
"Lucy Channing," she audibly read the name displayed on it. It was a familiar name. Bea could remember having heard this name in one of her classes. That class with Ravenclaws. She remembered it.
She could not stop smiling as she read through the parchment. The arrival of an owl from someone other than her father was unexpected and random, but Bea was excited, for Lucy seemed fun and chatty, and easy to interact with.

She put off the idea of painting and grabbed her quill and began scribbling on a big piece of parchment:
Lucy!

Good afternoon! Hope this letter finds you well. I am Bea Blanco, and yes, I am a gryffindor. It is quite the same for me. While I do not remember seeing you in person, I am familiar with your name. I am also aware you are a Ravenclaw, since our houses attend the same potions class on some day of the week.

Right! School has been busy. Transfiguration is difficult, especially for us, first-years. Though hopefully, we would find ourselves rocking not only Transfiguration, but every subject by the end of the semester!

You are right; Herbology was, well, thrilling. I forgot to put on my earmuffs. The mandrakes almost deafened me with their scream! I might appear a little odd saying this, but the first class of herbology would have been indifferent without those mandrakes!

For me, school is going amazing so far. Like you said, I have been busy, too, but you are all free once you complete your homework! Your letter has found me on the perfect time. I finished my homework a while ago. Apart from that, I stroll around in the corridors or the grounds, exploring. Otherwise, I just toss around on my dorm bed, or paint. I love painting.
Tell me, what do you like to do in your free time? Or when you are bored?

Your family sounds interesting, Lucy! I bet you have a lot of fun with them. Here is a suggestion: if your sister does not like you reading at night, why don't the two of you read something together? Something that you both would enjoy?
As for me, I do not have a big family, nor do I have any siblings, but I have very loving parents! Trust me, my father paints the best animated paintings we see here in the wizarding world! And my mother is a surgeon. She is very busy and sometimes cannot even come home because of her work, but that is nothing to affect our relationship!

Good luck getting flowers! I hope wildflowers help with the stinky smell! It was nice talking to you. I am glad you sent me an owl, and hopefully, I will be looking forward to more of them.
That said, are we quill pals now? Can we continue owling each other?

P.S. This is very random, but do you have a pet here, at Hogwarts yet?

See you around
Yours truly,
B.B.B

Later in September, early morning

Lucy ran up the stairs to owlery, breathing shallow and fast. Her cheeks were red, probably from the fatigue of running round the Grounds, as well as running all the stairs up into the Owlery.

She checked her freshly transformed whistly-pocket watch, to see that she still had some time till breakfast would begin.

Why she went outside, leaving her cozy bed behind and above that, why on earth would she be running, especially in the rainy weather that graced Scotland at the time. Well, if you asked Lucy, she'd just shrug her shoulders, for she had no idea why. She just needed to lose some energy time to time, and the easiest way for her to do it was to go out for a fast walk, sometimes spiced with running even.

"Whoo..." Once she got all the way up, she leaned forward to lean her hands against her thighs and try to catch a breath.

"He-hello, owls!" Greeted the girl after she pulled her letter (in the format A6 or something) out of her sweatshirt pocket. She used her other pocket to store an owl cracker which she was about to give the owl before taking the letter away.

She gave it to the owl who looked like she'd take it to her friend safely, giving her half of the cracker, to motivate her probably.

"Bea Blanco. And your treat.... here you go, lovely. Fly safe!"
Dear Bea,

I've finally got enough time to reply... whoa! It's been cra... wait for it... zy at school lately, really!

Funny-sad story from home - we'd used to hear my parents reproaching Lore for always only writing when he needed money, and he'd always be telling them that he wasn't, that he was really busy with the classes. And guess what now! Here I am, repeating my brother's mistakes... sadness.

Well, but at least, I'm not asking them for money, haha.

Whoa, and are you okay?! :O The tacher told us that mandrakes' crying can cause people to pass out even, and, if it's long term exposure to the sound, they can even go deaf! So dangerous! Pay attention to take them next time we're replanting the babies roots.

Whoa, you paint? That's so COOL! I'd love to see your paintings! Perhaps, you can show me when we meet? What do you like to paint the most? I mean, if it were nature, then I've got a type for you! The sunrise over the Hut and in general, Grounds, is just GORGEOUS! What do you say we go and check it out together some time? You said you liked strolling, right? Me too!

Well, I spend most time outside. My grandma told me that only half an hour of walking a day on the fresh air will make and keep me fit. And what do I do? Whoa, there are so many things! I love to play catch or hide and seek. But sadly, I don't know anyone here yet, so I just hang around the lake, catch butterflies and dragonflies, or play ducks and drakes. Or I just do my homework there, now that it's still warm. Perhaps, you could accompany me one day!

I sometimes go running too, like just now. I'm sending this letter on my way from the run, haha. The reason is that it helps me not get distracted so often in lessons. Got that from my dad, he's a runner too, so we often jog together!

But I'd love to become part of the Duelling Club, probably next year when things settle down a little. Lore was a member too, and so were my mom and grandpa. So, I've got a family tradition to keep, it seems, haha.

Are you thinking about starting one of the school sports? If so, which one will you choose?

Whoa, your suggestion sounds great! I might try it out some day. But, my sister is six, so she's not really interested in the things I'm interested in. But I'll try to find some books she could possibly enjoy too. Thank you for the suggestion!

Not having siblings sounds SO cool. You don't need to share your bathroom, take care of the younger, and such! But also, sometimes, it might feels kinda lonely, doesn't it? Well, you can spend some time at our place during next summer holidays, see what a tornment living with beasts siblings is.
Your parents' jobs are so cool! So, your dad paints magical paintings? That's splendid! My, I've got so many questions! Like, what sort of charms is he using to make them move, and talk, and know things, yet, not grow old?! I think your dad might be using the Sorcerer's Stone to make all that work! Haha...
And your mum, whoa, she must be so brave and so intelligent, knowing how to operate people!
Whoa, I'd love to meet them one day. :)

So, need to go now, get ready for breakfast and then school. I'd love us to exchange more letters too, I'm having fun writing to you! And yes, we are definitely quill pals now! :)

P.S. I don't yet! But I wanna get a pet very, very soon! How about you?

P.P.S. The wildflowers didn't help AT ALL. I had to ask dad to send me an air-freshening spray. Fortunately, the smell faded soon and it's good! Well, for now, at least...

See you soon,

Luce

It was early in the morning. Paint bottles, palletes, varieties of brushes, palette knives and other painting tools were spread all across Bea's dormitory bed. Balls of crumpled papers thrown all around. Holding up the large piece of paper, she satisfactorily looked at the incomplete treasure map she was painting.

Bea was up before she usually was, and had gotten right to painting, thanks to her odd dream where she was looking for treasure in an island with a cat much larger and muscular than her, walking on two limbs. The dream was interrupted when she fell off the bed. It needed to be finished, and only paper could do it now.

She wanted to paint it exactly as she had dreamt it, but the subject to be worried about was that she could not remember everything. Closing eyes to recall the dream did not help. Bea took a deep breath.
"Tú puedes, Bea," you can do it, Bea she mumbled to herself before putting the paper back.
A sound at the window made her drop her brush. She looked over her shoulder to realise it was an owl.
"Well hello there," beaming, she mumbled softly, knowing who the owl might be from. It was not sent by her father, she knew since he had sent her a long parchment two days ago.
Lucy.
Her lips curved into a smile as she read what the paper held for her. It was a long one. The longer the letter, the more the subject to gossip.
Luce!

Good morning! It has been a while, isn't it? I understand, it has been funny lately. I am glad to see your owl again. It has found me well. Cheers. appreciate the timing of your owls finding me. It seems like you were awake early today. Because of a very interesting dream, I, too, have been up for a while now.
A Treasure Island. I, with my muscle cat, was looking for a treasure. I might have thrown my leg forward while kicking a rock in the dream, causing me to fall off my bed. Currently, I am trying to paint a realistic treasure map.
Sounds funny, right? You can take a look at it when it is finished, if you want!

Well, at least you are breaking the cycle when it comes to the money part, so that is definitely a win against Lore, haha. But really, Luce, I feel you there. Big thanks to homework, especially Transfiguration and DADA, we hardly get time to write to our homes.
I recently received a 1-metre-long letter from my father complaining about how I had been writing to him so infrequently. I would not be surprised if it were a howler instead. Seriously, even a month has not passed at Hogwarts yet. But I also secretly appreciate it; it only shows papá cares for me.
It's just... I am confused. Should I just write back a 'sorry' with a heart to him, or a similar long (or longer) explanation? What do you think?

I am fine, thanks! My saviour, a fellow student, had handed me my earmuff before I could go deaf. It was a deafening experience. I am definitely going to pay attention the next time!

You really want to see them? I would love that! It feels so good to have someone curious about what you do, really. Well, I paint everything, but mostly do portraits, cute animals, Roman art, and yes, nature. You have a point, we should definitely hang out there! Probably on some weekend? The morning fresh air must be soothing. Like you said, I could paint the sun over the hut, and with you somewhere in the canvas, sipping tea or checking out flowers. If I actually put this to work, the painting would be given to you as a gift!

Your grandma is right. Fitness is important.. Walking keeps both the mind and body sound.
Your choice of games is amazing! Especially ducks and drakes. I have managed to make my stone skim along the surface of water only once in my life, and that too was a coincidence. Of course, we should accompany each other. And, perhaps I could take lessons on ducks and drakes as well, hahha.
And jogging? I bet you have a lot of fun with your father!

That absolutely sounds like a family tradition, huh. Duelling is fun! I believed you would be so good at it! If you become a duelist, I would be rooting for you, hehe. As for me, I have never decided anything about school sports yet. I might not join anything, or if I do, being an adrenaline junkie I would probably go for quidditch or broom racing.

That is so sweet! I would really love to meet your siblings. We could have a lot of fun. I love meeting people. You could visit us too! We live at my father's ancestral home. It is old and not too big, but I would love to show you my father's studio.
Yes, having no siblings sometimes feels lonely, but it's not that bad. If I had siblings, I would have loved to annoy everything out of them! Do you like irritating your siblings? Or... have you ever irritated them in the first place?
My sibling loneliness is usually taken away by my parents and my best friend, Ash. She is 7 and the cutest person I have ever met. She is scared of owls, which is quite understandable at such a young age, so I cannot send her a letter while at Hogwarts. That hurt.

My father first paints, and then uses several charms to make the contents of the paintings move. But he does not tell me the spells he uses. Says it is a secret for now, and that he wants me to learn them myself at school. It sometimes makes me impatient. I do not even know what year we learn those spells in. But... patience, patience.
What about your parents? I am curious. What do they do? I do not intend to sound rude. Do not get me wrong, but what blood of family do you belong to? As for me, I am a half-blood.

Oh god, yes, I almost forgot we had classes to attend. I'd finish writing quickly and head to breakfast as well!

That's amazing! I would be curious about what pet you get. I don't have a pet yet, but my father has promised me he will buy me a cat for my second-year!

Air freshener would have helped. Merlin's beard. I hope your dormmate does not pour another stinky thing on their bedside table, or anywhere.

Sorry, the letter is too long this time...

See you around
Yours truly,
B.B.B

OCTOBER, BEGINNING

There was merely just one day when it wasn't raining all day long, in October. Fortunately, Lucy chose to use the afternoon to go and send another letter to her penfriend Bea.

Bea... the mere thought of her brought a smile onto Lucy's lips, even though she was just climbing the stairs up to the Owlery. She couldn't forget about the fact that the Gryffindor was Half-blood, as well as herself. Nor could she wipe the fact that they would get along very well once they got to know each other in person.

"Hiya, owlities!" Exclaimed the girl, once she reached the destination. It took her less time to calm her breathing down this time - perhaps, she was getting into a better physical condition, but who knew...

She chose an owl who looked reliable, coming closer and offering a treat. "Will you bring this letter to Bea Blanco?" Lucy rubbed the owl under her neck a few times, before she gave her a treat and encouraged her to fly. "Go... fly quick and safe, hon!"
Dear Bea,

I'm glad to hear that you're fine! :)

Whoa, your dream... that's so cool! Lol, it would be fun if you were a seer. It would be possible that you find real treasure at the place that you dreamed about, haha. Take me with you, if you find out it's real!
Anyway, don't give up on the thought that the treasure might really exist, I mean... this is magical world, it certainly could, right? What if one of your ancestors, who was a pirate, sent you a dream of their hidden treasure? I mean, it's unlikely, but still! Even if it didn't exist, I'd SO love to go, explore an island with you, if you'll have me!

Whoa, a map... cool! At least, we'll have something to base our search on. Of course I'd love to see it! You have to show me when we meet, if it's finished by then, of course.

Haha, a howler! That would be hilarious, would love to see it (just kidding here, I swear... or am I? Haha!)! ;) I got one too, from my grandma once. Because I destroyed her herbs flowerbeds when we were at her place in New York, haha. But, hey! It wasn't totally my fault! We were playing catch with Les and I just... didn't have anywhere else to run to!
To answer your question, yeah, sorry with a heart could do! It doesn't have to be a long letter, adults usually don't have time to read them, ya know, they're just busy... By the way, you can also add that you love him and mum very much, that always works with my parents. In the P.S. though, don't forget to ask him for some money, haha. :'D

I don't know, maybe we should make a letter-writing session once a month, for those who are interested, to answer our parents' letters. It could take place at the weekend, outside perhaps (as long as the weather's still nice, then we'd move inside) and would last... hm, an hour at most! That's quite enough, haha. What do you think about it?

Yes, yes, yes! I'd absolutely love that! We haven't got any paintings at home, so yours will be the only one! I have to think of a place to put it, so that everyone can see it!
When do we do it then? They say on the Daily Prophet, that it will rain this weekend, so it's likely to be cloudy and we won't see the sunset. But whenever it doesn't rain, we'll go!

We do, actually. I miss dad a lot, and mum too. But there's Lore and all of you, my amazing friends here, in the castle, so it's not that bad at all!
As I said, you can enjoy my siblings when you're at our place. Leslie - that's my sister's name - will love ya, especially if ya can make pancakes and waffles, lol. She loves them!
Irritated... ha! Better to ask if there has been a day in my life when I hadn't irritated my siblings, haha. Once, I pranked my brother, putting a lizard (which he's afraid of) into the drawer in his chest-of-drawers. If you saw his face when he found it in his underwear, you'd end up rolling on the floor laughing, just like I did! :' D I mean, he paid me back soon, changing my shampoo for liquid glue, but... it wasn't that bad (mom seemed she'd kill us both or get a heart attack that day, haha). And that's what we're like. Pranking each other, arguing, calling each other names, beating each other even, but... I don't know, it just... at the end of the day, we've got each other's back, I think?

Your friend sounds cool! So, she's not a witch, is she? Well, perhaps, you could send a letter for her to your parents and they could pass it to her? Let me know how it went, if you choose to try! ; )

Whoa, Quidditch and Racing are both so cool! I'll root for ya too, whenever I can! Just listen to your heart, that's always the right way to do it. ; ) Oh, and also, I chose to join the Golden Explorers Club and the S.P.E.W. - Society for the protection of elvish welfare, or something like that. If you're interested, you can join some club too! There are so many, have you noticed? It could be fun!

Your parents are amazing! I mean, your dad? Whoa! So, you take after him with your painting! I can't wait for you to learn all those moving spells! You'll be a real professional, when you do. Would you like to have your own painting shop in the future? Or do you wanna do something totally different, and keep painting as a hobby?
I'm a half-blood too! It's the best - we get the best of both worlds, haha. Speaking of blood, have you met anyone who says that purebloods are the best? I've heard there are some of those in Slytherin. But haven't met any yet, I think...

My mum is a wizarding Meteorologist. It's really cool, she can say what the weather is about to be during the whole day, upon just looking out of the window in the morning. Her predictions have actually saved me from so much trouble while not having an umbrella on me when it's raining. She's actually very precise, haha! She works for the Ministry of Magic, mostly. I don't know what exactly she does for them though. Bet they're not that interested in what the weather's gonna be, when they spend all days inside.

My dad is a Muggle. He's a chief engineer in a company that produces cars and exports them to almost all countries in the world. It's called MG and my dad supervises the construction of the engines. He's actually pretty cool! He was once asked to design a brand new engine for a new car model.

Well, this letter is already much longer than I wanted it to be... eh. I'd better go, before I bore ya to death!

Hugs and kisses,

Luce
After she gave the letter to the owl, she walked away.
