Knocking back pillows: DADA, first year, lesson 3
Lucy loved DADA. The teacher was cool and had some good ideas for them to practice spells.OOC: This thread will be open for interactions, after @Mikey Forville and @Robin Marie write their first posts.
The girl was looking forward to the part of the lesson in which magic would be performed. Last lesson's Verdimillious and Periculo went great for her and she thus felt motivated to learn a new, this time perhaps more dangerous charm, a hex or a jinx, to be utterly precise, according to that day's theoretical part.
Once they were asked they were supposed to deliver their homework on the desk, Lucy was searching her backpack and couldn't find hers. In the end, she was somehow able to pull her rather crumpled version of the DADA homework from her backpack. "Yes! Found it!" Exclaimed the girl in victory.
Then, she ran to the teacher's desk from her place around the centre of the classroom, window, row four.
"Sorry, professor. Haven't learned any charms to make it...eh, look good again." Her apology to professor Lécruyer actually seemed genuine, as if the crumpled piece of paper really made her sad or at least, guilty and definitely apologetic.
The girl turned around soon and found her way back to her row. She took her parchment, quill and ink, and started taking notes on theory. Sooner than later though, she started drawing flowers and trees and mushrooms and tiny animals with huge eyes on her parchment, as she wasn't able to focus.
Galloping gorgons, theory's so boring and the prof's speaking so fast. I mean, it's not your fault professor! You're amazing Like, I can't even... uh! B. O. R. I. N. G! What could I do, other than take notes? Hm, I could come up with a name of a flower or a tree for every letter. Haha, that could be fun!
"B for... hm, barley! O for organge tree, obviously. R for rose, I for... uh..." It looked like she couldn't come up with a name of a plant starting in I. She seemed thoughtful for a few secs, but then, she nudged the person sitting next to her with her elbow, as she swung back on her chair, to also deliver the question to those sitting in the row behind her. "Hey guys, know a plant or a tree starting in I?" Whispered the girl, her curious eyes flicking from those behind her to her neighbour.

Mikey sat in the fifth row of the Defense Against The Dark Arts classroom focusing on his note taking. Normally this wouldn't be such a challenge for him as he really enjoyed this class but something was off about today. The fact that he couldn't put his finger on what was making him feel strange and was doing nothing to make him feel better about the feeling. He figured there was no point in dwelling on it and decided to push it to the back of his mind and focus on his notes.
He looked up and saw that Lucy was sitting in front of him. It must be a weird day if he had not noticed her before. She was a nice girl and he would even consider them friends to a certain degree. Lucy seemed to be in her normal energetic mood when she turned around and asked "Hey guys, know a plant or a tree starting in I?" She never seemed to do or say anything Mikey expected and that was one of the things he liked about her. He had a few run through his mind before he landed in his grandmothers favorite flower. "Iris" Mikey said smiling back at her and the silliness of the question in the middle of class.

Robin stared intently at Professor Lécuyer, trying her best to pay attention to the words coming out of his mouth, but inevitably ended up daydreaming about her professor's face instead. She was immediately intimidated by the professor when he introduced himself in the first lesson, especially when he mentioned he had previously been a hit wizard. Robin assumed a hit wizard was a secret government agency like the CIA and had immediately been taken with the interesting wizard. Seriously, what was in Hogwarts Pumpkin juice? Hot professor potion? Because he wasn't the first oddly attractive professor to have made her daydream list. Honestly, Robin knew she should be ashamed - she should be paying attention! But she couldn't find it in herself to care. Besides, he was just ranting about information from the textbook that she already knew and didn't feel the need to panic about missing a few sentences here and there.
Robin was deep in thought when she felt a nudge from her classmate, Lucy Channing, who was seated next to her, swinging back on her chair to also talk to the classmates behind them. She listed a series of letters, ending with "I." Robin felt like she could guess the rest of the word, considering Lucy had declared her lack of interest in class previously. Robin couldn't blame the girl - obviously, she had been a little distracted as well and couldn't say she was any better at the moment.
Robin turned her head to Mikey, who had given Lucy an answer in the form of "Iris" for the letter "I."
"You can use the plant Nettles for 'N'," Robin whispered to the girl, hoping the professor wouldn't notice her chatting while he rambled about jinxes and hexes. Robin noticed the doodles on Lucy's paper and smirked, thinking they looked sweet. Robin wasn't really an artist, and her doodles would look like a dinosaur regurgitated a stick figure if she attempted. "I like your doodles."

When Mikey suggested iris, Luce took a deep breath, then huffed and gave a smack to her forehead with her palm. "Merlin's pants... so easy. Nice, Mikey!" Lucy stretched her hand towards her housemate, even though she swang the chair back forward. She was probably attempting to offer him a highfive.
Meanwhile, she was writing all the flower names down onto her parchment.
"Thinking about it, it could've also been the poisonous, green thing which climbs houses. What's its name... wait, I had help for that. Batman... the villain with red hair... what was her... ugh, can't recall!" Lucy frowned in frustration, then shrugged. Perhaps, she didn't mind that much that she couldn't remember.
When Robin said nettles for N, Luce nodded her head eagerly, grinning and writing it down next to the capital N, below iris. "Thanks, Robin! By the way, nettle tea is the best, though the plants themselves are a product of pure malice! They burn me every single summer and it's impossible to get rid of them completely, without the Herbicide potion. Funny, my aunt used to punish us when we were at her house, sending us off to weed the garden from nettles! Ugh... so evil!"
"But let's go on with the plants! G for... hm, guava. Yummy!"
Lucy paused for a while, going silent and taking notes about the Knockback jinx.
As Robin complimented her doodles, she looked up at her, smiling softly. "Thanks. I always admire your handwriting, Robin. It looks so... hm, neat, and it's really simple to find something in it! I admit, I sometimes look over your shoulder when we sit together and I miss something the professor said. Gobeithio nad oes ots gennych! I hope you don't mind!" Somehow, she managed to pass into her native Welsh with her last sentence.
Fortunately, she realized almost immediately. Her cheeks turned bright pink and her eyes widened. "Eh, I'm sorry! Didn't realize... wait, you do understand tho, right? You're Welsh too!" Said the girl, expectancy more than obvious in her eyes.

"Merlin's pants... so easy. Nice, Mikey!" Lucy said louder than Mikey would have liked. They were still in class after all and he didn't want to end up back in detention. She followed her exclamation up with what could have been a wave of her hand or an attempt at a high five it was hard to tell. Mikey couldn't help but let out a chuckle at his friend's boundless energy and fun-loving spirit.
Mikey was getting distracted now trying to listen to the lecture and the girl's conversation right in front of him. It sounded like they were moving through the alphabet with plant names and then it was too quiet and possibly Welsh for him to understand. He realized both of them could speak at least two languages and that was pretty cool. Maybe they could teach him if he asked. He decided to turn his attention back to the professor and his notes. When he looked down he saw that he had stopped taking notes and was absent mindedly writing down plant names. He sighed inwardly and dipped his quill again. Mikey crossed out the names of a few plants and redoubled his effort to focus on the lesson.

Robin's cheeks felt hot when Lucy started speaking in Welsh. Robin understood most of the language, because her grandma and Mam spoke it frequently, but she couldn't speak it herself except for a few key words, despite how much her mother nagged on her about learning it. "Uh, I only know some Welsh. But Diolch thank you for asking. Me Mam only speaks it when grandma's around," She whispers to the girl, Robin said, finishing off her notes with a flick of the quill.
Then the professor was instructing the students to start practicing the knockback jinx on the fluffy pink cushions. She put away her quill and paper, watching as the desks were levitated from the center of the room.
Robin grabbed her wand and looked toward her classmates. "Want to practice together?" She asked Mikey and Lucy, pointing to a section of wall where they could all work. She grabbed a pillow and placed it on the table and turned to her classmates. "What was the wand movement, again? I was a bit... distracted." She said, cheeks burning even hotter than before. She knew the incantation - Flipendo - and she knew that the light cast was supposed to be a bright blue. She just happened to not be looking when the professor made the jinx's wand movements. Robin hoped that her classmates had a little bit better luck, or she would have to resort watching the other students or God forbid... asking the way too handsome Professor...

Mikey gathered up his things quickly when the professor gave the signal to start practicing. He was relieved, anything was better than trying to keep up with notes while Lucy and Robin were having half a conversation right in front of him. Not that he minded much. It actually made him smile. He grabbed his wand and stood up, walking over to the spot Robin had pointed out.
When Robin asked about the wand movement, Mikey grinned a little, glad he hadn't been the only one a bit distracted. Robin also looked like she was flustered and her cheeks were turning a a shade of red. "You need a downward curve first," Mikey said, lifting his wand and demonstrating slowly, "then a quick flick upward with a little hook at the end, like this." He was guessing that she must be frustrated and embarrassed at not paying attention to that part of the lecture.
"It's no big deal Robin I'm happy to share notes and help with anything you might have missed," Mikey said trying to comfort his friend a little. He didn't realize that he was completely oblivious to what was actually going on in her head. "Well, Who wants to try it first?"

Robin slowly copied Mikey with her wand arm as he instructed her through the wand movements: a downward curve... with a flick upward and a small flourish at the end. She nodded and copied it a couple more times, breathing the incantation under her breath simultaneously, trying her best to focus.
"It's no big deal Robin I'm happy to share notes and help with anything you might have missed," Mikey said, surprising Robin. She knew her classmate was kind - they'd had a few good conversations back in the common room when they first arrived - but she didn't understand why he would offer to help her. Despite feeling shame, she appreciated it. She generally disliked admitting that she was behind in any sort of way, and Mikey had reacted in a way that immediately disarmed her. Maybe- they could be friends one day soon.
"Thanks, Mikey," She said warmly, smiling at him. "I'll go first." Robin concentrated on the purple pillow, pointing her wand at it, and tried to focus. "Flipendo," She said weakly, attempting to do the wand movement that Mikey had shown her. The pillow flinched but didn't move. She sighed. Why am I so out of it? She thought, wiping a drop of sweat off of her forehead. Robin stepped back and released an awkward laugh, not making eye contact with her classmate.
"You try it. Guess I'm blowing it today." She mumbled, embarrassed, crossing her arms and gesturing to Mikey to try.

Mikey watched Robin attempt the Knockback Jinx, eyes quietly focused on her form and wand movement. She had the basics right, her wrist had the right turn, her voice just needed a little more punch. When the pillow flinched and settled again without much force, Mikey didn’t frown or laugh. He just nodded once, as if that result was entirely expected on a first try.
“It didn’t blow up, so that’s already a win,” he said with an encouraging smile, stepping forward. “You’ve got the motion down. Just needs a bit more oomph. It’s like pushing your intent through the wand. Not yelling, but meaning it.” Or at least that's what he had heard in class.
He turned to face the pillow, grounding his feet slightly like he’d seen the upper years do in dueling class. Then, with a clean sweep of his wand and a steady voice, he cast “Flipendo!” The charm shot forward in a bright streak of blue light. It struck the pillow dead center and sent it tumbling a few feet across the floor before it landed with a soft landing.
Mikey blinked, surprised at how well it had worked. He let out a quick laugh, half proud and half sheepish. "I cant believe that worked." He said honestly. "That’s probably the only time it’s going to go that straight for me,” he admitted. Then he turned to Robin and gently nudged her arm with his elbow. “You’re up again."

Robin was grinding her teeth together when Mikey got the spell on his first try. Usually that was her, and she was trying to keep her irritation pointed towards herself instead of her classmate. She knew he was only trying to help, and maybe watching him do it correctly would make a difference for her. She knew that her pride was her biggest obstacle, and she wouldn’t take it out on an innocent bystander… even when they were doing better than her, academically. Momentarily. Whatever. Robin was competitive, and now she was going to get it right.
Mikey nudged her with his elbow, reminding her of her older brother Jer, instantly making her relax. Mikey was a naturally calming person. He seemed to be highly attentive to the people around him, and although it made her nervous never knowing what he was thinking, it also gave her a sense of brotherly familiarity. She gave Mikey a small clap for a job well done, and took a deep breath.
Okay, Robin thought. Let’s try again.
She took a deep breath, approached the pillow and raised her wand once more. Feeling a bit more confident with the wand movement, it was no problem at all for Robin to exclaim, this time with, as Mikey said, some oomph. “Flipendo!” She said, a blue light streaking from her wand, sending the pillow flying, nearly hitting a Gryffindor, but landing directly beside his on the floor. She broke out in a relieved smile and nudged Mikey back with her own elbow. It felt a bit easier to relax when she wasn’t completely distracted by attractive professors - not that Mikey was much better, honestly, but she wasn’t nearly as intimidated by students her age than she was of imposing adult wizards with unknown magical qualities.
“Nice!” She exclaimed, bobbing up and down on her feet. “Thanks, I was about to lose my shit honestly.” Robin studied the boy for a moment, maybe staring a bit too long. He was a conundrum to her. He was always nice to her, interested in her activities, and just as capable intellectually. It made her respect him. Robin thought back to her first interaction with her best friend, Odette, and how she had stalked the girl for over a week before they had finally spoken. Robin didn’t trust people easily, and Mikey was no exception, but he most certainly intrigued her. Just as Odette did. She wanted to know more about him, understand him, so she could know whether to extend a hand of friendship or not. It was her only rule- don’t get too close unless you know what they can poison you with. Robin stowed this thought away for another day- they had a lesson to return to.
“Your turn.” She said, stepping back. Robin suddenly remembered something from their first meeting- the boy had tattoos… but had said, if she could remember correctly, that they had just shown up one day. “Tell me about your tattoos,” she said, bluntly, looking at his arm despite it being covered by his standard black cloak.
