✽Avery's trick had backfired. She knew she had to make up for the lost distance, but she wasn't quite sure how she would yet. The only way was to dive for the snitch with all she had. Though, that could end quite badly considering what had happened last time. But Avery wasn't ready to give up. At least, not yet. She was having fun with the little game they were playing. It gave her a sense of excitement and thrill that she had not felt in a long time.
Avery watched the older girl chase the snitch. Carefully calculating what she was going to do to get that little fluttering golden ball. Finally, she had a plan that would either work, or end in her doom. Either way, Avery was ready. She prepared to shoot off. Though she knew her broom wasn't very fast. She couldn't wait to get a new broom. It would be a lot easier to play with her own broom instead of the old and rickety school one.
Avery surged forward when she realized that the girl hadn't seen her yet. Now was her one and only chance to grab that snitch. Avery reached out her hand. Flying dangerously close to crashing, yet all she could do was focus on that golden ball. Avery had barely latched her fingers onto the little ball when she felt a shift in her broom. Something was wrong.
That's when it happened. Avery's broom shot out from beneath her. Causing her to hit the ground hard. She rolled a little before landing on her back. Staring up at the air. She had the snitch in her hand! Then she had lost it! All thanks to her broom. Typical. Well, the only thing she could do was try and get up. She didn't feel anything broken, but she could feel the bruises forming. She would probably have to visit Colin in the Hospital Wing later, but, for now, she was determined to get back into the air.
Avery stood up stiffly. Stretching slightly, so her muscles would loosen up from the fall. Then she walked over to check on her crazy broom. After a careful inspection that it hadn't splintered or broken from her fall, she mounted it again and kicked off. Ready for the next part of their game. ✽

I should have paid attention.
I should have known that enthusiasts—especially the reckless ones—tend to do something incredibly stupid.
Something as stupid as not knowing their own broom’s limits.
The kid shot past me, nearly colliding with me—so close that I could feel the rush of air as she missed me by a hair’s breadth. But her speed was too much for her to handle. Losing control, she plummeted.
I barely managed to swerve away and halt abruptly, but the deafening thump of her crash echoed across the field. And the Snitch? Well, it was free once more.
"Bugger."
I was about to descend when, to my surprise, the kid got up, dusted herself off, checked both herself and her broom—then mounted up again and soared back into the sky.
"Kid," I called out, closing the distance between us. "You should get checked. This isn’t some high-stakes selection match, and I’d rather not have you risking your health just to keep up with a game."
I had a feeling she wouldn’t listen.
But this wasn’t right.
"You could be seriously hurt," I insisted, sighing. "Just… look, I don’t wanna get in trouble for ‘ragging’ a junior—especially when I’m actually not ragging one."
I look over, hoping she would understand. But, in the end, its her decision...

✽Avery waved a hand as she flew closer to the older girl. "I've had much worse falls. That ws nothing compared to the time I broke my leg by narrowly missing the stands."Avery laughed at the memory. At the time it wasn't funny, but looking back it was quite funny. The amount of times that she had fallen off her broom was climbing pretty quickly. Avery just hoped that she would be able to get out all her jitters and get into the game when she hopefully joined the team someday.
"You ready to continue?" Avery questioned. Hoping that the older girl would want to continue their game. She was enjoying chasing the snitch for the first time. It was as if she was actually learning something. Every time the older girl did a trick in the air to get the snitch, Avery took notes. She wanted to be able to do things like that. It would be fun, and useful for whenever she chased the snitch.
Avery began her search for the snitch again. Wanting to find the little golden ball of terror before it ran away from her grasp again. Avery had no idea such a little ball could be so much of a pain to get. Literally. Avery quickly stretched her arms. Trying to get all the stiffness out before she chased the snitch again. ✽

So, the match is still on.
Apparently, the kid's broken a leg before—guess she knows well enough if she’s broken something this time or not.
“Less-go!” I grin, trying to shake off the nagging thought that the fall could have been far worse.
As she regains focus and throws herself back into the game, I have a plan of my own. A plan that involves teaching her two important things: the dangers this game holds, and the precautions every player must take.
I’m no pro—barely even played enough matches to brag about. I’m just the new recruit who barely scraped her way onto the team. But if there’s one thing I can do, it’s make sure the rookie learns these two basics.
Not by preaching from a rulebook, though. I’ve never been one to follow those anyway. The field doesn’t wait for theory. It demands instinct, reflex, grit. So while my knowledge of playbook strategies might still be shaky, I’ve got a few practical lessons up my sleeve.
And this time, I won’t be chasing the Snitch.
Nope—my new target is Avery.
Should I tell her?
Hell nah!
Let’s just see how she follows the Snitch… while I wait for the perfect moment to flip her world upside down.

✽Avery began her search for the snitch once again once she had gotten into a good position. She needed to focus. Though her mind was reeling. Of course she wouldn't show how much the fall had rattled her. She had to be strong. Especially if she was going to eventually be playing Quidditch on a real pitch with real dangers and a lot more people. She quickly shook away her shock and focused on one thing and only one thing. Getting. The. Snitch.
Avery scanned the area. Hoping that she would be able to find the snitch and actually hold onto it this time. She was determined. Nothing was going to stop her from getting that snitch. She made a mental note to actually pay attention to her broom, and not fall off again. Falling off was no fun. Especially in the middle of a practice that was beneficial to her learning.
Finally she found it. The little golden ball was fluttering near one of the stands across the pitch from Avery and the older girl. Before Avery chased after it again, she calculated what she was about to do. She had learned that she couldn't dive headfirst into getting that little golden ball. It would just end up with her embarrassing herself even more. She carefully plotted a plan inside her head and began to fly towards the snitch. Ready to see what this next chase would hold. ✽

Her stance had shifted noticeably, though she was still playing it safe.
But Quidditch isn’t a game for the cautious. It’s a bloodthirsty sport, notorious for its chaos—where "playing it safe" is often the quickest route to defeat.
Sure, fouls are known to be vicious—dirty, even—but the sport rarely goes a full match without a few sly moves slipping past the referee’s eye. And today? Our little match could use a touch of that chaos.
A blatching would be far too brutal for a rookie like her. But a good, clean blurting? That wouldn’t hurt—well, not too much.
I kept my eyes locked on her. She darted glances in multiple directions, trying to spot the Snitch, before finally committing to a path towards the stands. Her focus was sharp, her form steady—perfect.
It gave me just the opening I needed.
I picked up speed, slowly trailing her from behind and rising just enough to match her height. I hovered just inside her peripheral vision—visible, but not enough to set off alarms. Not yet.
Let’s not give her time to think this through, shall we?
Three... two... one—NOW!
I veered sharply to the right, cutting close as if I were going to slam into her—but at the last possible moment, I pulled up hard, avoiding impact by mere inches.
I guess that's more than enough to flip her world now, isn't it?

✽Avery could see the girl somewhere behind her, but she paid no mind. All she could think about was getting the snitch. It was the one thing that Avery could actually have somewhat control over. Especially if she focused. As she chased the fluttering golden ball, she hadn't even realized that the other girl wasn't chasing it as closely as she was. That should have sent off warning signals in Avery's head, but she was focused on the snitch. Too focused.
That's when things went terribly wrong. Out of nowhere, the girl shot towards Avery. Narrowly missing crashing into her. At the last moment, the girl verred away. Though, Avery lost control again. Completely shocked. She narrowly missed crashing into the stands as she regained her balance. She had lost the snitch, but she had lost a lot more. She was breathing hard from the exertion of getting her broom back in order.
She couldn't believe what had just happened. Though, at that moment, she realized something. The girl was actually trying to help. Avery had never had to react to something trying to throw her off of her path or attack her. She was way too used to being alone. She wanted to thank the girl, but the words died in her mouth. She was still too shocked with what had happened to even attempt speaking. She couldn't even search for the snitch just yet. ✽

That was a good save on her part.
Impressive, honestly—especially for a beginner.
I couldn’t help but smile as I noticed the way her composure had cracked just a little. Visibly shaken, but still in the game.
Haha! That was fun.
Now then... where’s that damn Snitch?
At this point, I truly understand why Seekers are always so high-strung. Spotting that speck of gold feels like trying to find a gnat in a thunderstorm. My eyes are already straining from all the scanning, and while the adrenaline’s great, it’s starting to turn into a pounding headache.
Ugh… give me the straightforward chaos of chasing the Quaffle any day. At least then I know what I’m up against—score, dodge, survive the Bludger warzone, repeat. That’s tangible. This? This is a hunt for a glittering ghost.
Still, I give it another shot—eyes narrowing, head swiveling, scanning every inch of sky and structure. If it really did zip off in that direction…
Wait.
There. The walls.
Just a flash—but unmistakable. A glint of gold, like a tease at the corner of my vision.
“Hey, kid!” I call out, the wind biting through my words as I shoot forward.
“Last round?”
Let’s end this with a bang.

✽Avery noticed just a couple seconds after the older girl where the snitch was. A grin spread across her face. Maybe this time she would actually catch the snitch instead of eating dirt. She didn't really want to go through all that mess again. It was obviously not on her list of her greatest moments this year.
Avery nodded her head in agreement before saying, "Let's do this."
She couldn't wait to see what would happen next. Since this would be the last round, she had to prove that she could do more than just crashing into the ground. She had caught the snitch before, so why couldn't she catch it now? Nothing was stopping her from finally doing something right on the pitch.
Avery had learned her lesson. This time, she would split her attention. Half on the snitch and half on her surroundings. Doing this would hopefully not cause her to lose focus again and be surprised by another surprise near crash.
Avery followed the snitch while she carefully calculated her path and where the older girl was somewhere behind her. Avery smiled as she chased the snitch. She loved the thrill chasing the snitch and Quidditch brought. Quidditch stirred something inside of Avery that brought her competitive side out. She couldn't wait to someday be on the real team. She would work hard to prove that she was of worth until then since that was all she could do. ✽

With her speed and focus, Avery had a decent lead on me.
But not good enough.
Sure, she was closer to the Snitch, but I had seen it first. And I wasn’t about to let that advantage go to waste.
I leaned in, urging my broom to pick up speed as I veered dangerously close to her tail. Within seconds, I was riding alongside her, shoulder to shoulder. The sudden narrowing of space slowed us both for a moment, but we recovered fast—faster than I expected.
I wasn’t edging into foul territory, not yet. But as she stretched out her hand toward the Snitch, something wicked sparked in my bones. Mischief. A simple, irresistible impulse.
I began swatting at her hand—not hard enough to injure, just enough to throw her aim off. No clean grab for her today.
But just as quickly, the Snitch juked hard to the left, and instinct took over. We both snapped back into control, hands gripping our brooms, weaving sharply through the air as we chased it down again.
Now, the new plan?
Irritate the hell out of Avery.
Let’s see how well she handles chaos.
