Providing a few answers that answered nothing at all, Avis unexpectedly held up her palm. Before, Sabrina only got a quick glance, but now seeing the full extand of it she flinched. It has gotten so, so much worse. If she would have been given more space to talk, she would've voiced the question that popped up in her head: does it hurt?.

But alas, Avis pulled her hand back and began pacing. In a harsh, biting manner that didn't suit her, she began rambling about stuff that for some reason made chills crawl up Sabrina's spine. Wide-eyed, the smaller raven tried to make sense of what was happening, not understanding half the stuff that was spilling out of Avis' mouth - Seriously, how did mayo fit into all of this?

As abruptly as she began, Avis then came to a halt. When she finally met her eyes again, Sabrina was ready for anger, resentment even, but what she saw was pure despiration.

Something shifted inside of her. She stopped fidgeting, letting go of her sweater. Suddenly her own unease and fear were pushed into the back of her mind, the leftover space quickly filling up with the need to help her friend. No longer frozen in place, her feet moved and she began to make her way forward to the girl opposing her, stopping about two steps infront of her.

Worry mixed with fear and somethig that could be determination reflected on her face, her hand rose and slowly, carefully, settled over Avis' shoulder. If she were to pull away or shake her off, Sabrina would let her hand fall back to her side with an understanding nod, giving Avis space. If not, she would then do the same with her other hand, standing like that for a few beats, searching the other raven's eyes before stepping forward and pulling her into a hug. It wouldn't be the same as her previous energetic attempts at physical affection, but rather a proper firm embrace. Something to ground the other girl, a reassurance. After a quiet moment of arrenging her thoughts - a rare state for the girl - she opened her mouth.

"You can trust me" she whispered, the low volume of her voice not taking away from the confidence in it, "You're my friend, Avis. I am not leaving you alone in this." And it was true. Even though she didn't fully understand what was happening, she would sooner evaporate into thin air than turn her back on her friend. That much she was sure of.

"You only become a mouse once you accept the role of it" she came back to one of the things Avis said, challenging her pessimistic approach. "Plus, you're pretty much a through and through bird so.." she attempted a poor joke with a small awkward laugh before clearing her throat and adding a quiet: "sorry, not the time." If they were hugging, Sabrina would close her eyes and lean her head against Avis' shoulder, silently holding her without saying anything else.

Sabrina raised her arm and lay her hand on Avis' shoulder. Avis flinched, but didn't shy away. It was like those movies she had seen, where the two main characters hold each other in order to talk telepathically. Oh how Avis wished she had telepathy right now.

If she had telepathy, this would all be easier. Telepaths could say things that were too stubborn for the tongue to form into words, things that hurt too much to admit.

"You can trust me." Avis looked away, and it was truly an impressive feat of self control that she didn't scoff. Suuuure. That's what they all said. Everyone was trustworthy, right up until the point at which they put poison ivy in your bed. Everyone was trustworthy, until they walked away from you, even though they knew the truth. Avis paused, brow furrowing. Maybe… maybe that wasn’t entirely fair anymore. It had been first grade, for holden's sake.

But regardless of when or how Avis had learned not to trust people, she had certainly learned it somehow, and she carried it with her now.

"You only become a mouse once you accept the role of it" Now Avis snickered, her laugh sharp and biting as she stepped back, pulling away from Sabrina as the girl tried to pull in closer. "Really? You think the cat cares whether the mouse 'accepts the role of a mouse?' It can act like anything it wants, it's still the prey."

She took another step back, shaking her head forcefully and looking down at her hand as her fingers twitched. "I'm a mouse. You're a mouse. And I can't have the cat chasing after you, too." In the end, Avis was underwater, and if Sabrina tried to pull her up, all Avis could see was pulling her down too. That was what Aamon had done, intentionally or not. And Avis was going to keep her friend out of the water. Keep her normalcy, keep her comfort. This was hard enough already, but to add the guilt of dragging her only friend into this mess, Avis knew that would shatter her past her breaking point.

Turning sharply on her heels, Avis headed off towards the castle. If Sabrina followed her, Avis would ignore her, besides a quiet, "We still got a lot of rules to break, and it's your turn," before walking faster. It was a soft invitation, a gentle allowance for Sabrina to continue their game, that Avis would still meet the next time something was written in the book.

That was not where I thought that would go, but it's about the most Avis thing she would do. If you want to be more included in whatever happens in the plot you can owl me, otherwise post in the book whenever you can, and Sabrina is always welcome to pry.
