Asterius walked down to the Great Hall, looking up at the Ceiling at the grey sky, the sun barely peeking out behind some clouds. He sat at the Gryffindor table, gathering up some pancakes and bacon to eat for breakfast. He popped a piece of pancake into his mouth and chewed slowly. It was good, but not as good as his grandfather's pancakes. His grandfather made the best pancakes in the world - the perfect fluffy pancakes.

He looked around curiously at the people sitting on either side of him. He was curious to know what being a Gryffindor meant - whether people would be nice to him or not. He was a known pureblood, after all. He had not been prepared to be sorted into Gryffindor, though he supposed the Weasley's were also pureblooded and went to Gryffindor, so maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

The piercing cry of his parents' screech owl had Asterius looking up at the letter tied to the owl's leg. "Hey, Alabaster," He greeted his parents' owl. He fed the owl a bit of bacon before unwrapping the letter from his leg. He nervously opened the letter.

Dear Asterius,

It is good that you made it to Hogwarts without any problems. We received your letter stating that you were sorted into Gryffindor. While surprising maybe to yourself, we had an inkling that you might be sorted there or even in Hufflepuff.
(There was a scribbled note on the side of the parchment, saying: "I lost the bet to your mother, thanks for that.")

Asterius had to laugh, partially in response to his Dad's complaining, and partially in relief. They weren't mad at him. He continued to read, now more relaxed.

We want to congratulate you for being sorted into the House of the Lions. It is a good house and something you should take pride in, even if your Slytherin Pride may balk at such a thing. We hope you will do well in your classes, and earn Gryffindor plenty of house points.

With much love,
Mom and Dad

Asterius put down the letter, finally truly relaxing for the first time since he had been Sorted. He was going to be OK.

The Morning After
Graci slipped into the great hall, almost falling on her face, but catching herself before she embarrassed herself too much.

She hadn't gotten much sleep the past night, adjusting to a new bed and new expectations. Ugh, if this continues I'm never going to sleep, probably fail all my classes while I'm at it.

She tried to put on a less sour face, but sleep deprivation makes no one happy.

Graci flopped down on one of the Gryffindor benches, next to a white haired boy she didn't think looked too rowdy.

She piled some food on her plate and watched the boy out of the corner of her eye. He had mail, on the first day even. He probably sent something yesterday night or has helicopter parents. If it was the first one he was probably a pureblood. if it was the second then either pureblood or halfblood would be plausible. Either for either, really.

He read it through and relaxed, probably got the news that his parents weren't upset at house placement.

She turned to the boy, thinking she should probably introduce herself if she wanted to make friends. Or at the very least make sure he didn't hate her. That could be catostrophic, enemies on the first day, most likely not a record, but close enough.

"Gracilia Laren. Graci, Cici, or any nickname imaginable is allowed."

Asterius startled a little as a girl flopped down next to him, eyeing him for a moment before introducing herself as "Gracilia Laren." Asterius gave her a formal nod. He knew that it was best for him to keep to his manners rather than be rude to this girl. He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly as he ruminated on what he should say next.

"My name is Asterius Ebony. I've not had a nickname before," he admitted. His words came with a slight accent. He looked at the white streak in the girl's otherwise pretty brown hair. Her eyes were a beautiful brown as well. He felt himself blush a little as he took in her beauty. He wasn't used to noticing pretty girls just yet. It was a new experience for him to even notice girls in that way. "I'm not familiar with your last name. Are you a halfblood or muggleborn?" His tone was curious and nonjudgemental. "Not that it really matters I suppose," he continued, biting his lower lip as he went into thought.

"My father's family descended from ancient native american wizards - I used to live in America, actually." His accent would make much more sense now.

Asterius Ebony. A beautiful name. And hoW ON EARTH HAD THIS BOY NEVER HAD A NICKNAME? Maybe he doesn't like nicknames? Maybe he didn't have a lot of friends? Though, in her eyes, he seemed like a kind boy. But he could be pure blooded and sometimes they were home-schooled or absurdly sheltered.

Her earlier tiredness forgotten, she took this boy in, now recognizing him as a conversation companion instead of a nameless stranger.

"I'm not familiar with your last name. Are you a halfblood or muggleborn?" He paused and added, "Not that it really matters I suppose."

Graci smiled at this, it was quite annoying when people went on and on about blood purity for days. Blood was blood and nothing more.

"My father's family descended from ancient native american wizards - I used to live in America, actually."

Graci must have been silent for a bit too long, thinking of what she would say to reply to it.

"Oh, I'm a halfblood, though I could give you a whole spiel on why it's more like 3/4 blood. It's probably fair to assume you're a pure blood? I think it's really cool that you're from America. I'm kinda from Greece. Well, my mum is so I think that I am too, by association. Not my sister though. She's a Londoner through and through. What's America like? Also... why have you never had a nickname? Or do you just not like them?" She was aware she was babbling, but she didn't care.

Asterius blinked stupidly at her smile. It was making him want to smile like a fool back at her. Maybe he should smile at her? Make her more at ease? He might have hesitated too long and made the smile he finally allowed on his face a bit creepy. He let the smile fall into a more neutral face as Graci answered his question in a babbling cascade of words.

Asterius felt himself smile more genuinely this time. Maybe having some friends in Gryffindor would help him feel more like he belonged there. "I've just never had many friends to give me a nickname," he admitted to her, feeling like he was admitting to something shameful in that he hadn't had a lot of friends. "Also, 'Asterius' doesn't really lend itself to many 'easy' nicknames, I don't think. Besides," he said a little defensively, "I don't mind my name. It's a good name, I think. Why ruin it with a nickname, you know?"

He was rambling now, but he couldn't help but feel more at ease now that Graci had spoken to him. He smiled at her again. She was pretty, he contemplated in a more clinical fashion. Maybe being friends with her would help him get along in Gryffindor. "Say, you... uh, wanna be friends?" He wanted to stuff a sock in his mouth immediately after saying the words. Now she would think that he was an idiot - or desperate. He wasn't sure which would be better.

He smiled back at her. She was almost disappointed when it fell, but then her blabbering seemed to have brought it back.

His reply had answered her query, no friends. Such a sad life that would be. I wonder how Makayli and Lindin are doing back home. Alia, too.

So, no friends=no nickname, gotcha. She was busy thinking of possible nicknames for him, Aster, Teri/Terry, Rius. He had, in fact, a VERY nickname-able name.

He didn't think so, and she was about to tell him it was, when he went on, "I don't mind my name. It's a good name, I think. Why ruin it with a nickname, you know?"

Graci was a bit taken aback, but only because she was surprised. It made sense, he did have a very nice name, and why ruin it indeed.

"Say, you... uh, wanna be friends?"

Her contemplative demeanor turned into one of happiness, friends and it was only the first day of school. Gosh, she sounded like a little child. Then she remembered she was only eleven, it was okay to sometimes be childlike in her wonder, and not a 16 year old 24/7.

"Oh, that would be absolutely wonderful. I don't have a lot of friends her- seeing as it's only the first day- so yes, I would very much like to be your friend." She made a mental note to work on the talking too much, it was getting excessive.

"Anyways, your thoughts on Gryffindor?"

Asterius felt happy when Graci immediately lit up upon his stumbling question, and responded in kind, "Oh, that would be absolutely wonderful. I don't have a lot of friends here- seeing as it's only the first day- so yes, I would very much like to be your friend." He smiled broadly at her, feeling elated that she wanted to be his friend.

Then she asked the question. Thoughts on Gryffindor. "Well, I'll admit my mother's family has been all Slytherins, and I was expecting the same," he admitted. "But, now that I think about it, and my parents mentioned it too - I'm not really a fit for Slytherin. I haven't had a lot of friends, but the ones I have had, are friends for life kinda thing - instead of just, ya know, having connections." He started to ramble again, and forced himself to stop.

"Anyway, what I mean to say is, Gryffindor seems great so far! I met some other kids last night in the Common Room, and they all seemed so nice. It's great that people are kind, here," he said appreciatively.

He looked down at his plate, remembering that it was breakfast, finally. He took a piece of egg onto his fork and brought it up to his lips, taking a measured bite and remembering to chew well before swallowing and returning to his speech. "What do you think about Gryffindor?"

Oh, a family full of Slytherins, how pure blood. Graci wondered what it would be like, having such a legacy to live up to. Probably not a very easy thing to do. He seemed very self aware, at least enough to recognized when he didn't belong somewhere. She was glad he found himself being in Gryffindor, she was glad to have made him as a friend.

She thought he was quite admirable, actually having the qualities it took to get into such a house. Qualities she could only search for in herself, coming up empty.

Graci was astounded when he announced he had already met people. Not because he didn't seem like he would, it was just that she hadn't and almost wished she could've made some acquaintances.

Graci's breakfast was halfway finished, her having neglected it while talking.

"What do you think about Gryffindor?"

She thought for a moment, what did she thinks about Gryffindor.

"Well... at first I wasn't too sure, I'm still not." Her sentences were more drawn out now, wondering how he would react to her obvious non-Gryffindor tendencies. "I don't have a lot of Gryffindor attributes. I was expecting Hufflepuff, if anything. That's what my twin sister Zoe got, but I feel as though we should have switched. She has enough sass and courage for the both of us and then some."

Graci momentarily wondered how Zoe was doing but remembered she should probably get used to being by herself and banished the thought.

"Who was it you met?" Graci asked, and then went back to her breakfast, hoping that if she finished it now, then even if they spent a bit too long talking she wouldn't have to dump her breakfast. She would not be late to her classes on the first day.

Asterius continued eating, carefully chewing and making sure to not speak with his mouth open. He listened to Graci's explanation of how she had expected Hufflepuff, which is what her twin sister Zoe had been sorted into. He nodded to her, swallowing his food before speaking.

"Well, I didn't expect Gryffindor either,"
he pointed out reasonably. "I hear that sometimes the Hat sorts you where it thinks you'll be one day, rather than what you are now, if that makes sense?" He suggested. "Maybe the Hat saw potential in us that we didn't think we had."

He gave another nod before eating his last slice of bacon. "Oh I met some nice girls," he said. "Isla and Kai, I forget if they said their last names," he rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "Oh, and a nonbinary pal named Lex," he added, smiling at the thought of his new friends.

He gave some thought, then, to whether or not they'd like Graci. Probably so, he thought to himself. Isla would probably like her; she was very nice but had some spiciness to her, which Isla seemed to prefer. Lex would probably like anyone who wasn't mean to her, and Kai seemed standoffish at first, but ultimately was as shy as the rest of their cohort.

Yeseong, being how he was, was just wandering the place, having just woken up from his dorms, tired as he was styling his hair. Coming from where he was into the Great Hall, he noticed Graci and some.... new kid....?
"My name is Asterius Ebony. I've not had a nickname before,"
He heard him say. Lex could give him handy for that. Would know how to give him a few. Thinking about that led him on, wondering if he knew them or not. He got his question answered eventually though.*
"Oh I met some nice girls. Isla and Kai, I forget if they said their last names. Oh, and a nonbinary pal named Lex."
"Well, that was easy," He thought. Mentioning Lex.... Maybe he could go check and see if they were awake. Maybe cause some drama too. He knew how Lex seemed to find Asterius cool. Also knew how they had introduced themselves with a collision of being lost in their thoughts. Maybe a little push into Asterius would be funny. With that thought in his head, he went off to go find them. Eventually, he had found Lex just hanging out within the Astronomy tower, gazing as always when there. Sneakily, he went and picked them up, giggling as he brought them down. It took a good walk, but he brought them down. Once there, he followed through, sneaking near the Gryffindor table and pushing them into Asterius, quickly going off before seen.*
