First Spells!
Charms class held its energy during the afternoon classes as students watched Professor Zoë Fresnel teach. Professor Zoë Fresnel took her position in front of her students, and her smile shone brighter than ever. We were briefed about the spells we will study and their casting methods: The lesson, comprising the Mending Charm, begins by introducing students to Reparo, which enables them to mend broken items. The students cheered at the start of class because Professor Zoë Fremin would now teach them Reparo and Tarantallegra.
The students showed strong enthusiasm through their loud responses. Charles experienced a spark of excitement within himself through the thrill. The Mending Charm and Dancing Feet Spell fascinated Charles because they provided unique magical skills.
The professor started her lesson by showing Reparo on a small, broken wooden skeleton. Charles watched closely, staring intently at the method to cast Reparo while performing a wand flick followed by a minimal wave. He analysed the use of the wand to activate the magic, which restored the broken bones of the skeleton instantly.
She passed the teaching moment to the class after her lesson. Charles took his wand and felt both a surge of anxiety and exhilaration at the same time. He picked all the broken objects from his desk, hoping to fix them.
He made his first attempt to repair an object by waving his wand according to Professor Fresnel's instructions. At first, nothing happened. His expression changed from happiness to disappointment when the toy was damaged. The idea to persist rang in his mind so he calmly took another try.
He spoke "Reparo" loudly while concentrating on the toy. He focused his wand movement while thinking about the toy returning to its perfect condition. To his annoyance, only a few sparks were emitted from the wand. With determination, he worked again to repair the toy, then saw his efforts complete as the toy slowly reshaped into a recovered state. Charles felt great satisfaction after winning.
Professor Fresnel officially ended the lesson by giving all students permission to move on to their next assignment. Time to perform Tarantallegra steps with us. Using this spell will force the target to move their legs without control. Using this spell brings laughter to the group.
Charles paid close attention as the professor used the spell on a second wooden figure. To perform Tarantallegra, the instructor moves her wand in a leg-like movement while reciting the spell name. Using a joyful wand gesture, she caused the skeleton to bounce in amusing movements as if dancing. Laughter erupted in the classroom.
Having seen the results, Charles made his decision to attempt the spell. He grabbed a third skeleton from his workstation, waiting eagerly to try. He executed the Tarantallegra spell by demonstrating his wand movements for everyone to see.
At first, nothing happened. The skeleton did not move, and Charles sensed a small decline in his spirits. He brought back to mind his successful efforts with Reparo. The act of art filled him with confidence.
He made another attempt by keeping his attention on the happy feeling of casting the spell. He called “Tarantallegra” again, and the failure of the occurrence of nothingness gripped the atmosphere. Charles reattempted, and to his amazement, the skeleton danced to life with its legs out. Cheering students celebrated in the classroom when Charles saw his skeleton perform the instructed dance moves.
During the lesson, everyone laughed and made music as students practised their magic. Students performed both spells by watching their wooden figures dance while their toys restored themselves. Charles connected with his classmates since they explored magic at the same time.
Charles finished the lesson with a complete understanding of both Reparo and Tarantallegra. He left the classroom feeling successful and happy because he had completed his first-ever lesson.

Lucy was sitting somewhere in the front, as usual, writing the theoretical stuff about reparo first. When done, she took her wand and performed the charm on her own broken thingy.
"Reparo!" Ordered the girl, which didn't really go as planned. She breathed out therefore, waving her wand again, focusing and everything. Her second attempt sadly also didn't bring success.
"Oh come on, wand. Can you, please, stop sulking? You like Charms, and so do I! So start working," did the girl whisper under her breath, to the wand. Apparently, it was either her pep talk or the fact that on her third time, she managed to focus even better than before, which finally made something happen to the broken object.
"Yay, it worked! Finally!" Exclaimed the girl happilly, looking around herself, to check on the results of her classmates.
"Okay, now again, Skoda." The wand was informed by Lucy, and thus she could go on.
To learn both Reparo and Tarantallegra took her more or less the whole lesson. Once she was done with them, she packed her things and while leaving, she met her Gryffindor classmate whom she talked to after Transfiguration.
"Hey there, bro!" Spoke the girl with a hint of Welsh accent. "How are ya? How did the two spells go?" Asked the girl, smiling.

Charles, while exiting the room, was taken aback when a young girl, similar in height, with slightly messy hair and a carefree nature, could most likely in the same age. Through the colour of the robes, he could observe that she was a Ravenclaw through the astute jet blue. He was too attentive towards 'knowledge' to notice the girl standing by him, hence was taken by surprise when she started to converse unexpectedly. Charles, still not convinced, flipped the 'The Book of Spells' closed and looked deep into her. Looks pretty friendly, seems outgoing, great match, ok now it's just getting weird!
Charles immediately snapped out of his trance. "My apologies, I was zoned out and focusing on some advanced spells. I am great! Yes, my Charms lesson went great; it was quite the experience. however, the knowledge is pretty basic. It didn't take me long to figure out the practical work. My family have been pioneers in the field of DADA and Transfiguration anyway." After second thoughts, Charles immediately realised he had forgotten to introduce himself!
Embarrassment slightly washed over his face. "And I am Charles by the way, and you are..." he questioned, his voice shaking slightly.

"No problem." Smiled the girl, waving his apology off and smiling bright at him. She looked like the sun for a moment, with her round-shaped face. "So, which advanced spells have caught your attention?""My apologies, I was zoned out and focussing on some advanced spells.
"Whoa, good for ya! I gotta work quite hard at school, to make things... well, happen. Like the two we learned today. Skoda seems not to be fond of Charms." Grimaced the girl, chewing her chewing gum, as she took a closer look at him. The first thing that caught her attention besides, the Gryffindor badge on his robe, were his blue eyes, which she started drawning in immediately. The reason was simple; no one she knew in her house, let alone her family, had eyes as bright as his.It didn't take me long to figure out the practical work. My family have been pioneers in the field of DADA and Transfiguration anyway."
She had to blink her eyes several times to stop staring. Alright, Luce, stop it, before he starts thinking you want something from him, or before he starts thinking you're creepy.
"Huh, sorry. It's... I'm sorry for staring at you. It's just... your eyes! I don't know anyone with such bright blue ones!" Explained the Ravie. "I-I'm Lucy. Pleased to meet ya, Charles. Wait, can I call ya Charlie?"
She paused for a few seconds, chewing and making a bubble, then blowing it. "So, you're from a wizarding family, I figure, right? What do your parents do?"

Charles looked at her in surprise; he had never seen a student so curious about a subject that they struggled immensely and yet persisted, even blaming the wand in class. Seems pretty strong-willedCome on, Charles. I know you're competitive, but please be respectful to new students. His mother's words echoed."No problem." Smiled the girl, waving his apology off. "So, which advanced spells have caught your attention?"
"Well after reading the Book of Spells the third time, repeating the thorough analysis process, I concluded that the Patronus and Disarming Charms were pretty intriguing. Even though the Disarming Charm is a basic spell, they construct the fundamentals of which you can grow to master the other spells in the books. The Patronus, probably the most popular, is an extremely fickle spell, only based on the wizard's and witch's experiences." Charles took a silent breather after subtly showcasing his acumen in academics.
Charles felt a sense of relief when she recognised the hardships of Charms according to his precise judgement about her."Whoa, good for ya! I gotta work quite hard at school, to make things... well, happen. Like the two we learned today. Skoda seems not to be fond of Charms."
"Yes, I saw you taking it out on your wand... Future advice, never do that and have patience. The wand has feelings as well and will not hesitate to backfire!" Charles gave a slight chuckle.
Charles felt a weird sensation as the girl started looking at him dead in the eye. Did I say something wrong, or show the wrong expression?
Charles gave a slight smile. "A lot of people are convulsed by my eyes. I got it from my mother, but don't worry, it won't be as distracting once I age." Charles realised she finally introduced herself. "Nice to meet you Lucy, and no even though we have gotten to an ideal start, do not call me Charlie, it somehow makes me look feeble in a sense and matches no personality traits of mine.""Huh, sorry. It's... I'm sorry for staring at you. It's just... your eyes! I don't know anyone with such bright blue ones!" Explained the Ravie. "I-I'm Lucy. Pleased to meet ya, Charles. Wait, can I call ya Charlie?"
There was a momentary pause before Lucy spoke up again."Yes precisely, actually from one of the oldest, long-serving and powerful ones too! Lucky right? So my family centuries ago used to be protectorates of Dark Magic from a cunning group of Slytherin families that were usually enticed by its power. Since the Ministry Of Magic has formed we have found peace, however our intellect has far outstretched many other members in the magical world. Currently, my dad works for the Mysteries Department and also is a qualified historian, while my mum a virtuoso in potions is an Auror," Charles beamed as he got the chance to express his family heritage."So, you're from a wizarding family, I figure, right? What do your parents do?"
"What about you? Tell me something interesting about yours." He leaned in, "I have a huge gap between my classes today," He gave a friendly smile, charisma emanating through him.

Even though the Disarming Charm is a basic spell, they construct the fundamentals of which you can grow to master the other spells in the books.
"Hm..." Hummed Luce, tilting her head to a side and narrowing her eyes, apparently thinking about what he'd said. "Of course, there's a reason why Expelliarmus is called every Aurors' morning cup of tea.... or something like that. My point is that it's very commonly used. Funny thing is that I've got an uncle, Paul, who's an Auror. He's very cool! He told us that he once kept an account of all the spells he used in one month when... well, fighting crime and being badass. And guess how many times he used Expelliarmus!"
Grinned the girl cheekily.
"I mean, I don't think that it matters that it's basic, as long as it's useful and efficient. Better to use Expelliarmus than some profound charms and hexes which are harder to perform and perhaps even have a more harmful effect." She expressed her opinion, shrugging. "But Patronus Spell is amazing! My, I've heard so much about it! My mum once showed it to me! My patronus will be a whale for sure, 'cause they're smart and caring and... and they only eat plancton, so they don't harm any other animals! What do you think will be yours?"
Future advice, never do that and have patience. The wand has feelings as well and will not hesitate to backfire!"
Lucy grimaced, once Charles mentioned patience. "But... Skoda was so idle with the spell! I can usually sense it that she's trying to perform the spell. She sends some energy or... or she trembles a little in my palm, to let me know that she's here, with me, and that she's trying. It's just... ugh, today, it was as if she weren't! And that makes me cross." Claimed the girl, but pulled her wand out of her pocket anyway.
"Ugh, alright, Skoda. You'd be sulking if I hadn't done this, so..." Lucy breathed in, trying to refrain from rolling her eyes in a very teenager way, as she looked down at her wand. "Sorry, girly, for my having rised my voice at you. Genuinely. I just... hope you don't - as Charlie said - backfire at me for it, or something!"
"Nice to meet you Lucy, and no even though we have gotten to an ideal start, do not call me Charlie, it somehow makes me look feeble in a sense and matches no personality traits of mine."
Luce smiled first, but then, as he went on speaking, she looked more and more disappointed. "Oh, sorry then, for having called you Charlie before. I won't or... well, I'll try my best to remember." The girl bit her lower lip nervously.
Should I tell him about the film Charlie's Angels where Charlie is a huge spy boss who employs three pretty young women and bosses them around? Nah, Luce, leave it for another time! Thought the girl.
"Really? Do you look like your mum?" Asked the girl, apparently genuinely curious.
So my family centuries ago used to be protectorates of Dark Magic from a cunning group of Slytherin families that were usually enticed by its power.
After that, Luce's eyes widened again in surprise, and she gasped. "Whoa, I miss so much knowledge about that sounds... eh, huh." She rather chose not to finish her sentence. "Are... you're not 'boutta fight for blood purity, or something, right?"
Lucy sickered, then pulled a package of chewing gums from her backpack. "Would you like some? They're some new, limited flavour." Offered the girl, before she took another chewing gum and put it in her mouth.
As Charles started speaking about his parents, she started nodding.
"Cool! Head Historian... that must be very... not funny at all. No offence!" She rised her palms, as a sign of peace, as she had spoken before thinking about the emotional impact of her words on people.
"But Auror... whoa! That's so cool! I..." She had to clear her throat to continue. "I wanna be one too when I grow up! But please, don't tell anyone, Charles."
She paused for a while then.
"Anyway, my mum's a Meteorologist... wizarding, to be precise, not Muggle, and my dad's a Muggle. So that makes me a Half-blood, I believe." The girl barked out a laugh, watching Charles intently for his reactions. "Eh... my family are a blast, really. I mean, they're so funny and we spend so much time together when we're all home! Like, we're not half as important or posh as yours apparently, but... I wouldn't exchange it with anyone!"
She was smiling the whole time she spoke about those closest to her.
"How about your family? What are they like? Do you spend a lot of time together?"

Charles was following Lucy's reasoning as she expressed her side of Expelliarmus being a useful spell in general combats. Charles continued pondering about how a novice in the art of Charms.. who was yelling at her wand could pick up on this. The disarming charm can especially be useful in quick-fire combat."Of course, there's a reason why Expelliarmus is called every Aurors' morning cup of tea.... or something like that. My point is that it's very commonly used. Funny thing is that I've got an uncle, Paul, who's an Auror. He's very cool! "I completely agree with you, Lucy. The Disarming Charm has its positive, that is why it is the soul of duelling in the first place. It is the stage that everyone has to endure to excel in the magical arts," Charles was impressed and delighted about her thoughtful character.
Charles noticed that she was curious about his thoughts on his own Patronus after sharing the caring and amiable nature of her own 'predicted' one. "Well, it has been, in my opinion, a mix of love, compassion, bravery, and intelligence. Mmm.. I would say a stag." Charles was unsure about his Patronus. Too many aspects to consider. "Well, at the end of the day, it also depends on your happy memories and how you have been influenced in your life," he stated with a slight chuckle.
Charles found it amusing as she heeded his advice about respecting her wand and came up with an apology for it. That is enough to forgive I guess!.
Charles was confused when she queried about his feelings towards his own mother. "Well, my mum is a very righteous and respected person, but she is not too hardy. As a mother, she loves and cares for everyone around her. So I like her and the bonus point for being an auror.""Really? Do you look like your mum?"
Charles stopped in his tracks. "I know if you don't believe it or anything, but we are in the 21st century and my family had to endure a lot of threats before so it is kind of my problem." He felt a deep-seated sorrow but did not convey it. Still smiling soberly."Whoa, I miss so much knowledge about that sounds... eh, huh.'
Charles felt a shiver run down his spine, that might be true, but managed to wave it off. "No absolutely not, this is not the 1600s anymore, we all change it is history. There is however a slight chance we may encounter this, but it is very slim. Also, I forgot to mention earlier that I am a half-blood, my mum is pure while my dad is a half-blood as well due to his muggle grandmother." Charles reassured Lucy."Are... you're not 'boutta fight for blood purity, or something, right?"
Charles widened his eyes when he saw the bag, it looked like paradise but respectfully turned down the offer. "Hah, no thanks.""Would you like some? They're some new, limited flavour."
"Yes not the greatest, but as long as he enjoys it and is a pioneer at it, that is all that matters. History of Magic is not that boring though, it can uncover a lot of exciting truths if you have the patience to look into them." Charles juxtaposed Lucy's airy conclusion."Cool! Head Historian... that must be very... not funny at all. No offence!"
Charles grinned, "It is ok secret is safe with me, I am also planning to diverge into that path myself. An auror is pretty well respected at the end of the day!""But Auror... whoa! That's so cool! I..." She had to clear her throat to continue. "I wanna be one too when I grow up! But please, don't tell anyone, Charles."
Charles felt a sense of achievement as she felt comfortable with him to know her family background. "Sounds pretty nice to me!" he said listening intently."Anyway, my mum's a Meteorologist... wizarding, to be precise, not Muggle, and my dad's a Muggle.
"Despite being pretty busy parents, they still never neglected me and took a lot of time off to care for me in my younger years. I am an only child so I kinda have one set of grandparents and one set of parents. However, we are very close-knit and have a nice environment to grow and nurture ourselves. The only thing I am slightly negative about is their concern with academics. I have no idea what they are worried about! I excelled in all my lessons!""How about your family? What are they like? Do you spend a lot of time together?"
Charles glanced outside noticing that his afternoon break was on the verge of concluding.
"Well, it seems that time has gotten the better of us! I need to head to my next class. I was thinking Lucy we could meet another time, it was nice to get a proper break!"

Yes, Lucy sometimes tended to surprise people with her wits, that's why she was sorted to Ravenclaw, after all. Then again though, she was still only eleven, that was why she, more often than sometimes, was she giggling and grinning and fits of not really rational laughter, grimacing and rolling her eyes in a very teenage manner.
"Your mum seems like a really nice person," commented the girl after Charles gave a profound description of his mum's personality traits. She liked to talk about people and their personalities. It was always interesting. "I guess one needs to be exceptionally just sometimes, to be able to recognize if the intent behind the spell is... ya know, bad... or not."
"He he, brave ya say? Enough to do a race with me, Mr. Best-at-DADA-and-who's-more?" Asked the girl cheekily, using a nickname for the poor boy, whom she just suddenly felt the most accute urge to beat at something... anything that day. Oh, and she also nudged him with her elbow, on the right side of his torso. "The last one in the next class is a potato!" Did she call right before she started running ahead. towards the stairs and then to the next classroom where the following class was supposed to take place. Once in a while, she looked over her shoulder, to check if Charles was following her or not. She quickly got out of sight and very soon, she even left the corridor and the particular part of the castle that she'd been in.

Charles felt a sense of glee when receiving the compliment from Lucy about her mother. Honestly, he felt connected to Lucy in the form of casual conversation. He glanced outside again, like a reference of time as the sunlight started to dim, signalling the commencing of the last session for the day."Your mum seems like a really nice person," commented the girl after Charles gave a profound description of his mum's personality traits. She liked to talk about people and their personalities. It was always interesting. Charles found it entertaining that she took such an effort to bring forth the competition within despite her sporadic clumsiness. He was taken aback at the thought of a race, but noticed that she started sprinting in the other direction!"He he, brave ya say? Enough to do a race with me, Mr. Best-at-DADA-and-who's-more?" "The last one in the next class is a potato!"
"Sorry! My class is in the opposite direction! It is with the Slytherin first years! Maybe we can race another time! Cya Lucy!" He tried his best to yell, but she was long gone swiftly bending the corner.
As he walked away from their discussion, Charles felt elated to have expanded his social circle. It was a while before he had met a new student. At this moment lingering within he placed his mind back on track for his lesson.
