Lost Child
September 5
Jake Morris was lost.
The boy had wandered through the halls of the school trying his hardest to find his way but it was hard...Hogwarts must have been at least a million times bigger than his house, or anywhere he'd ever been before. It hadn't even been a week yet, and it was a wonder Jake had managed to make it to his classes at all with how little he knew about where he was going. It wasn't even fair because even the things that he TRIED to learn like the staircases didn't stay in the same place anyway, and that meant that he couldn't even make a map.
Today however, he was more lost than he'd ever been before. Every turn seemed to take him somewhere new, but none of it was familiar at all. What if he got lost forever...? This hallway was lonelier than the last, and the voices of the other kids were starting to seem further and further away. Jake's pace slowed, and he flinched at each noise, wondering what lurked in the hidden halls of Hogwarts where he had found himself and what he was supposed to do to get back to a place that he knew.
When he turned the corner he nearly jumped out of his skin when he saw another person, but he soon realized that it was not some kind of evil child-eating monster but instead just a girl. This was still a little scary. Jake didn't like talking to the other children (in fact, he dreaded it) but this time he thought that maybe he had no choice. He had to ask for help.
The little Hufflepuff slowly approached the girl. She looked pretty small, almost like him and Grace. Maybe that meant she'd be nice...like Grace was. Either way, she was Jake's only hope of making it out of here alive. He worked up all his courage, stood up at his tallest, and then addressed her.
"Um e-excuse me...?" the shy boy called out, flinching when he met her eyes. "U-Um...d-do...d-do you know where Hufflepuff common room is...? Im lost..." he said miserably, looking like he just might cry at any moment. He did feel ready to, but he tried his hardest to be brave. Maybe she could help him....

Mari Haynes was not lost.
Much like in her first year, Mari was prone to wandering the halls, searching for her many boyfriend or almost-boyfriends to deal with them. She still needed to break up with Lamik, and she still needed to start dating Pressy; life was a constant series of targets and calculations and trying to juggle them all was, quite honestly, stressful. So, now she was wandering the halls, trying to make sense of how best to approach the situation. If she happened to run into one of her suitors, then heck, fate would tell her what best to do.
She was about to turn a corner when a boy turned that same corner, eyes widening as she watched him jump. He seemed younger, though just as small as she was. Mari wasn't really expecting him to ask her anything - these days, not many people really wanted to talk to her; even her younger sister seemed to be avoiding Mari lately.
"The Hufflepuff common room?" She asked carefully. "You must be a first year, aren't you?"
Her eyes scanned the boy up and down, as she took in the small stature, the delicate and frail body, the blond hair and the deep, nervous eyes. He...maybe fate did intervene...he seemed quite... useful.
But first, she needed more information. She could withhold the facts he needed until she gauged his worth. "First, tell me: what's your name?"

As Jake finally managed to get his question out, now all he had to do was wait for an answer. This, in some ways, was the scariest part. The girl asked if he was a first year. Jake swallowed and nodded his head shyly. As he did, the girl seemed to be looking him up and down in a way that made Jake uneasy...and if he wasn't so scared to be lost and alone and she wasn't as small as he was, he might have turned and ran away.
But when she finally spoke, it was a question that made sense enough. It was luckily an easy one. Even in his fear, Jake could answer that one.
"Um...Jake," he answered quietly. "Jake Morris," he recited. He noticed for the first time that she had Hufflepuff robes like he did. That might mean she knew the way...unless she was a first year too and just as lost as he was. Was she going to take him back now...? Did she know where to go....? Or was she going to do something else with him? It occurred to Jake that they were alone - and there was nobody around to call out to. He fidgeted nervously and waited.

He looked scared, and that only made Mari want him more. She smiled at him, with a glint of mischievousness behind her eyes, running her hand through her tangled puff. Lately, she had been wearing her hair up, day and night, in efforts to control the crazy mess that her hair now was, after months of not taking care of it properly. How ragged she looked did not matter, though. She would still win him over. She always had a knack for winning the boys over, whether they wanted to or not...especially the ones that proved themselves weak. It would be quite the challenge for her, if she took this "Jake Morris" under her wing.
Full moon wasn't for a few weeks, so Mari was feeling about as lively as she could possibly feel when she came across Jake. She could play with him all day and night, you are not safe from Mari. But for now, she'd start simple, of course. She couldn't frighten him too much more...
Extending a hand, Mari replied to the small boy's introduction, "My name's Mari Haynes. I'm a second year. "
She had expected the boy to ask her name in return, but he seemed a bit slow. Mari was used to these sort of delays in her potential lovers; one could not forget how Lamik seemed to have a permanent memory loss in just about everything, except for saving lives. It was how she got him to forget about the Porcelain Palace, once and for all.
But it seemed that this boy also had an issue with directions, so with her most gentle (though forced) smile, Mari asked further, "Are you lost?"

Jake looked down at her hand for a moment, still frozen. Jake wasn't very used to shaking hands. He knew how to do it but it wasn't a thing he did a lot, and that kind of contact felt uncomfortable when he didn't know the other person. But he also knew that not shaking hands was a rude thing, and then they might get hurt or they might know that he was uncomfortable. He had to try to be like everybody else...so Jake stuck out a little hand and shook hers slowly.
Jake didn't know what he was supposed to say next. He didn't really know HOW to talk to the other kids...everybody else always seemed to know what to say. Talking when he was nervous was hard already. Doing both at the same time was impossible...so he waited for her to speak again. There was something about her smile that Jake hadn't quite seen before, and he didn't really know what it meant, or why it made him feel so nervous. Maybe it was just because he was lost. Her question reminded him of that very fact, of just how lost he was...how he had no idea where he was going or how to get back....and he nodded his head in response, his lower lip beginning to tremble. "Yes..." he managed, on the verge of tears.
