It’s been a little over a month since Odette’s first day at Hogwarts. After mostly keeping to herself, the first two weeks felt horrendously lonely, but as the days went on, she began to find her footing and her place in the school. Making an unexpected friend or two helps stave off the solemn feeling of homesickness, but with the excitement of classes and jokes with classmates, she often misses regaling her family with stories about her day at dinner. Speaking through owls only makes the half-blood’s longing for their comfort and familiarity grow stronger, despairing their long-awaited response.

In moments like this, Odette finally understands her mom’s displeasure of not being able to use muggle cell phones at home. If it weren’t for the magic at Hogwarts interfering with the electronic device, the half-blood could have recounted her excitement about learning a new spell in charms class soon. Of course, it’s not the first time she’s had to wait for a response from her family, but her thrill typically wanes each day she watches as the mail owls skip over her at breakfast.

All Odette wants to do after learning each new spell at Hogwarts, is to discuss them with her father, even if the charms are so low-level that he has no practical application for it in his work. The witch just wants to feel close to him and share her joy in each new spell in her repertoire, missing the days when she would eagerly cajole her dad into letting her watch the charmwright weave complicated and delicate spells atop one another on the most beautifully enchanted amulets in the shop.

Not wanting to disturb her fellow housemates with her sour mood, Odette wanders out of the tower and strolls the halls of the school grounds as she looks for a quiet place to settle. Unsurprisingly, with the first day of the weekend in full swing, her options are quite limited as students take advantage of their day off from classes to relax with their friends in the cool fall weather. Cutting her losses, the half-blood decides to sit in the courtyard, hoping that the bright moods of her fellow witches and wizards will wash away her gloom.

Crossing over the mossy stones, Odette makes her way toward the large fountain in the center, marveling at the griffin statues resting on the four protrusions of the fountain’s base. It’s a shame it’s not filled with water, the witch sighs, I’m sure it would be even more stunning. Despite the warmth of the sun peaking through the dense cluster of clouds in the sky, the crisp morning breeze proved to be a bit too nippy for Odette’s taste. Having foolishly opted for her thin navy cardigan over her woolen burgundy jumper, the Ravenclaw settles for sitting on the grey slabs on the ground and resting against the fountain’s base in an effort to block the brisk breeze as much as possible.

Gazing out at the students relaxing on the benches as they laugh together while sharing treats, reminds Odette of picnicking with her mom in the vast green fields behind their cottage as Max would fly above them on his broom. Practicing new tricks to boast in front of his Slytherin crush at Quidditch matches as the mother-daughter duo snack on treacle tarts and shout words of encouragement at him, or in Odette’s case, playfully teasing that the Gryffindor will be single forever with that shoddy flying. In retaliation, he’d swoop down with a smirk and steal her treat, proving her wrong with a smug bite into her delectable snack.

With a melancholy sigh, Odette leans her head back on the fountain and stares at the darkening clouds in the sky, idly wondering what her family is up to and pondering when they can have another picnic now that she’s in Hogwarts and Max lives off in France. The half-blood misses her family terribly and counts down the days to the winter holidays in anticipation of seeing them again.

A cold splash on her cheek snaps her out of her daze as she realizes the sky has grown quite gloomy and has begun to spitefully spit at the brooding witch. The lounging students flee the rain with a shriek, but Odette makes no move to join them. Instead, the first-year dramatically folds her knees up and pouts as the weather perfectly reflects her worsening mood. Wallowing as her clothes and hair progressively become drenched and weigh her down like a miserable wet cat.

“Can today get any worse?” Odette sniffles, wiping her face of tears or raindrops. She's not quite sure which it is at this point, “I’ve got a literal rain cloud over my head…and all I can think about is how much I want to go home.”

Who hasn't made a deal with a centuries-old entity of questionable moral standing and motives?
