Amelia sighed. Being back home for the Christmas holidays was awesome, but it made Amelia realize just how much she missed her family, her room, her former life.

Another sigh escaped her as she looked around for a nice enough owl to carry her letter home. There were so many types of owls— soft brown ones; others were dark maroon, some with stripes, with spots and so many different patterns. Trying not to step on any bird droppings, Amelia walked towards a dark owl with soft feathers.

It raised its leg, waiting for her to attach the letter. She did so, careful not to drop it or startle the owl. As she finished, she stepped back and let it fly out of the window.

Looking around once more before leaving, Amelia noticed a white owl with the occasional black spot here and there. The owl's piercing yellow eyes stared at her, unmoving. Amelia felt as if it knew all of her current thoughts and feelings— as if it knew just how much she missed her family, and just how bothered she was by the cunning eyes looking at her.

Amelia shook her head to put herself back together. This owl was beautiful, and seemingly well kept. It probably belonged to a loving student. Amelia smiled at the owl reluctantly, then gathered her school robes to walk out of the owlery.

As she started down the stairs, something caused her to stop..

Speech -- Thoughts

Today was yet another day where Lumi had chosen the Owlery to her dorm room. Pam wasn't quite sure what appeal she found in the Owlery....except for the owls. Had she made some friends? Well, perhaps. The thought made Pam happy.

She stifled a yawn as she made her way up the stairs to the owlery, clutching her letter securely in her hand. Classes had ended a while ago, and Pam had been carrying the letter with her all day so she could post it after her classes. Otherwise, the Owlery was pretty far from the Hufflepuff Common Room and well, Pam was lazy.

She would never tell her dad, but one of the best things that had come out of buying Lumi, was the fact that she did not have to make frequent trips to the Owlery any more. Well, most of the times. Whenever Lumi was willing to grace her with her presence in the dorm.

As she rounded to the last set of staircases leading to the Owlery, she spotted a familiar black haired Slytherin, standing near the door and Pam found herself smiling widely as she called out, "Hey, Amelia!" She found herself drawing the girl into a quick hug as she walked into the Owlery, casting her eyes around for her snowy owl as she asked, "Came to send a letter too?"

Amelia stared back down at Pam from the doorway. It felt as if it had been ages since they'd last seen each other. Amelia returned the quick hug, glad to see her friend again. In fact, it must have been a while since their last chat— Amelia couldn't even remember when it was.

Smiling broadly, Amelia turned to answer her friend. Pam's blonde locks had already disappeared into the owlery, leaving Amelia at the doorstep. "Yup, I came here to send a letter home. Who are you sending this to?" Amelia inquired as she took a step back onto the first step on the staircase. That way she wouldn't need to worry about stepping on anything; the stairs were clean. The smell still reached her, though.

Amelia hoped her question hadn't come off as too intrusive; it wasn't like they'd ignored each other on purpose. Life at Hogwarts just made them drift apart for some time, and now they were drifting back together.

Covering up her question quickly, just in case, Amelia added, "By the way, you should totally take that white owl over there." Amelia pointed at the owl that had its piercing eyes on her earlier. "That owl was staring at me for legit five minutes," Amelia said jokingly, trying to keep calm.

What if Pam had changed in the past month or so? What if she were a completely different person now? Life just went on as usual. So many things could happen in such a short time...

She nodded as she stepped over the doorway, leaving the wooden door open for Amelia, "My dad. I wasn't able to write to him last week. Who did you send yours to?" She cast her eyes around, quickly spotting Lumi in the room, but before she could reach her, Amelia's voice piped up from behind, and Pam turned to look at where she was pointing.

It looked like Lumi had caught her attention.

Grinning, she walked over to the owl, rubbing her head fondly as she told Amelia, "Oh, she's mine. Was she staring? She judges too much. But she's generally nice. Not very....snappy." Fishing out the owl treats she had brought for her, she fed them to her. "I went to buy her with my dad during the winter break. Her name is Lumi."

She folded up the letter, aiming to tie it to her leg, before she thought of something, and turned to Amelia again, "Hey, do you want to touch her?" She asked, "She won't bite.... probably."

Lumi was a bit picky about being touched. But she had accepted Pam's head pats without complaint so she guessed that it would be alright.

Well, that was until she decided to not like Amelia at all.

It seemed like Amelia's observation about the snowy owl amused Pam; she was grinning, perhaps even smirking, at Amelia's remark. Amelia's confusion evaporated quickly as Pam handed the owl treats and explained that she—Lumi— belonged to her. It made sense, though, that Pam had purchased Lumi during the holidays, since Amelia didn't remember sharing the express carriage with an owl on the first of September.

Amelia walked back into the owlery, stepping carefully on the dirty floor, coming to stand next to her friend. Pam was about to tie the letter to Molly(was it Molly?), when she seemed taken aback, as if she had just thought of something.

"Touch her?" Amelia asked, hesitating. She had nothing against owls; but she also didn't like them that much. Her longest interaction with an owl so far was... probably two minutes, more or less. They had always seemed distant, in contrast to Pam's owl, which seemed to be judging her— and not like what it saw. She didn't want to refuse Pam's offer, though, since they hadn't seen each other for so long. And besides, Pam seemed to be alright as she petted Luna.

Amelia side eyed the snowy owl before putting her hand out for Lana to sniff. Do owls work like dogs? The owl's beak seemed much more threatening than a dog's teeth. Amelia gulped; the piercing yellow eyes pinned her to her place. She started petting the owl, ready to jump back any second.

The plumage was quite soft, nice to the touch. Amelia exhaled. It wasn't bad at all. She had touched owls in the past; why had she been so afraid just a few seconds ago? "She's so adorable!" Amelia stated with a tiny smile.

Amelia was about as nervous to touch Lumi as Pam herself had been when she had met the owl for the first time. I suppose she just gives off that kind of vibe. Amelia worked similar to her though, holding her hand out to Lumi, waiting for her to do whatever the owl version of sniffing was. Could owls also detect friendliness? Pam didn't have the faintest clue.

Lumi was way too still though, and that could only mean two things. One, she did not mind it and liked it, two (and the more likely one), she was trying hard to keep calm and was about to bite. Luckily Amelia's hand was not too near her beak.

That wouldn't stop her though.

Pam narrowed her eyes at the owl for a split second, in an attempt to tell her to not hurt her friend, before abruptly stopping. Knowing her pet, she would snap at Amelia simply because Pam had told her not to. There was more chance of Amelia not getting hurt if Pam didn't say anything.

At the girl's words, she smiled, "She is isn't she? Do you plan to buy a pet sometime?" As she watched, the owl hopped away from her and closer to Pam, chortling low in her throat. Pam shook her head, smiling up at Amelia, "Yeah, I think she likes you."

Amelia could pick up some sort of communication between Pam and Lumi as she petted the latter for a few seconds. The two were clearly close, able to communicate without words. Amelia still couldn't believe she'd missed the fact Pam had gotten an owl— how could she not notice? How could she not know?

Pam's voice stopped her train of thought, and Amelia had to recollect herself. "Actually, I haven't thought of it yet. Maybe I should get one," she replied ,and immediately started considering potential animals and species, looking for something that might suit her, but to no avail— she couldn't imagine herself taking care of any creature. The wind from the empty window panes brushed her slightly, ruffling some of the owls' feathers, while also washing away that thought, taking it along.

"Eh? Ah, you think so?" Amelia smiled proudly, replying to what Pam had said. She was so sure the owl wouldn't like her, and now knowing it did, Amelia felt like a champion. Lumi was moving closer to Pam, making some noise Amelia didn't understand.

Pam still had her letter in her hands, though. "You gonna send that?" Amelia asked, pointing at the envelope. As she listened to Pam's response, Amelia started backing down towards the stairs, not wanting Lumi to fly into her when Pam would send her away; she still wasn't entirely sure the owl fully accepted her.

Pam nodded, grinning, "Yep, she can definitely...tolerate you. She would've bitten you by now if she didn't." She raised her eyebrows, watching Amelia's facial expressions change as she seemed to consider buying a pet. Pam supposed she eventually would, in the later years if not in this one, after all, most of their seniors had pets of their own. "Got any preferences?" She asked her.

Pam had taken a while to consider potential pets herself, before settling for an owl. She supposed it had been the fact that she had never actually seen owls before coming to Hogwarts, much less even think about having one as a pet. It had been too good an opportunity.

Her roommate had a puppy. A crup, and it was the cutest little thing Pam had ever seen. Ira doted on the dog, and honestly, Pam did too. Amelia's voice shook her out of her thoughts, and Pam nodded quickly, "Right, yeah, I'll send it right now." She reached out, carefully attaching the note to Lumi's leg, before rubbing her head, "Safe flight darling." Watching the owl fly away into the distance, Pam turned towards Amelia, to find the girl standing just near the flight of stairs, Pam grinned walking up to her and looping her arm around hers, as they descended down the stairs, "Got any plans for later?"
