New Nurse New Training! solo

Colin dashed up al four hundred eighty-six thousand nine hundred and two stairs that led, but a certain curious short cut he'd discovered in second year, directly from the corridor outside of Slytherin House all the way up to the third floor, just around the corner from the Hospital wing! He was genuinely excited. The interns had had at least three different nurses over the last few months, and Colin was eager to meet the new one.

He'd heard a rumour that Octavius Baird was returning to take the post. Naturally, when he heard this, he went straight to Liam to discuss them matter. After all, he was previously their Astronomy Professor! In their usual corner of the library, the decided that it was all very sus that an Astro Prof would be hired on as a Nurse, and they wondered if perhaps it was a different Octavius Baird. After all, Baird was an ordinary name, and Octavius was common enough as well so it could be so!

And, they reckoned, even if he was the same, magic is magic, right? If he could sort out what was wrong with a person, he'd certainly be able to heal them! So it was that Colin was eager to get started. And, upon entering the Hospital, he wasn't terribly surprised that the new nurse was none other than their old Astro Prof!

"Ayo Prof--- I mean! Nurse Baird!" Colin called out as he took his place to begin his first task. The place was lined with training dummies and there were record sheets before each one so that they could fill up and turn in. Easy peasy, thought Colin! He'd been in here enough as a patient and as an intern that he felt pretty confident in what needed to be done for most small injuries and wounds anyway. But judging from the training dummies, there were some pretty serious injuries too! He didn't know how to cast some of the spells that would surely be required, but at least he knew pretty well what spells would be required!

Colin chose the coolest looking injury of the lot!

"Wicked," he said under his breath. "Look at all the bones sticking out! That must've hurt!" Of course, he was standing in front of the training dummy that looked like its leg was just about torn off.

Colin got out his ink and parchment and quill and set to work.

His quill scritched across his parchment. He tried not to blob the ink, but it really was very difficult! "Dratted quill --- why can't they make one for left handed kids?" He turned the parchment at a steep angle and hooked his hand around so that he could write without smearing too much ink...

1. Compound Fracture of Tibia:

The tibia is the bigger bone in the lower leg, attached to the knee cap (patella) up top and the ankle (talus) down below. There's another leg bone in there too, the fibula that attaches to the tibia, but it's smaller.

A compound fracture means that the bone is not just broken, but that it's all sticking out of the skin! That means the muscles and skin are are all torn up and there's probably loads of bleeding too! If I ever get a compound fracture, I'd deffo ask the healer for the wickedest scar ever!

Colin reviewed his work, just as he'd always done when writing an exam paper, by reading it and rereading it until he found some glaring error or else deemed it awesomé! Satisfied that he'd described a totally wicked compound fracture, he moved on to the familiar hospital log on which he'd write down all the pertinent information like who he was treating and what happened and what he planned to do about it.

NOTES NAR: Miss McCoire presents to Hospital in an agitated state in moderate distress. Upon being hauled up on the cot, the bandage was removed, and she was observed to have one GROSS injury, to wit, a compound fracture in the left tibia. No other apparent injuries. Patient denied being bonked in the head or anywhere else, only in her left leg. Miss McCoire stated that she was practicing quidditch in the early morning of the fifth instant when she heard an almighty crack and, looking at her leg, perceived that twas nearly broken through! A bludger was noted to have bonked her left leg, causing the following injuries: a compound fracture of the tibia. Gentle poking of the injured limb revealed that the fibula is intact. In the field, ferula had been cast, creating a tidy splint around her leg, keeping it together and mopping up the blood. TX: 1. Evaluate wound. 2. Fracture to be healed with Episkey as it is not complex. 3. Laceration to be healed with Reparifors as is not large or gaping. 4. Leg to be cleaned with appropriate spell as desired (scourgify, lambent lutum, etc) 5. Patient to be treated with comfort care: warmed blankets during healing and convalescence; hydration & fortifying snack; discharge when patient feels strong enough to leave.

Colin checked over everything he'd written. He smirked. Meyra McCoire. "Pfft! Yeah right!" He'd had fun writing down her fake allergies. Right? Who was allergic to choco? And flobberworms --- well, flobberworm mucus didn't taste all that great, but twas still funny to write that as an allergy! Colin felt like he'd done a good job. Of course, a stronger spell like vulnera sanentur would be much better than reparifors, but he knew it worked on small wounds; and anyway, he wouldn't be expect to totally reattach someone's head or something with such a simple spell, right?

Colin scooped all his supplies back into his satchel with a quick flick of his wand and a practiced casting of the packing charm. Healer record in hand, he skipped over towards Nurse Baird's desk where he let it softly fall before giving him a cheerful smile and heading out the door to whatever wonderful adventure awaited him!
