The Lion’s Challenge

I conquered my fear of heights by sky diving. Worth it? Absolutely, 10/10 would recommend.

I haven't done much IC so I'll share an OOC story of 11 year old me instead.

I was in my first year and I was waiting for the school bus with a friend mine. For some reason, she was trying to push me into a bush that had a spider web on it and we were sort of wrestling on the road as I didn't want web or spiders in my hair. She dropped her purse as she was doing this and an older fourth or fifth year boy from a different school ran across the street, grabbed her purse and went to run.

I (probably foolishly but acted on instinct) stomped my foot and yelled "oi" at him, ready to fight him instead. He gave the purse back to her. And that's how I ended up best friends with this girl over two decades later.

IC: Ava used to be deathly afraid of werewolves! She really didn’t have much of a cause, other than disliking a certain werewolf. She overcame that fear recently, and along with it her prejudices.

OOC: I suppose I can’t say that I’ve overcome this fear yet, but at least I can say I’ve done it once. As a huge people pleaser and nonassertive person, I really struggle with standing up for myself. There’s been many friendships that I’ve experienced that were toxic, and I’m sure there are more to come. Only once have I been the one to end a friendship, and though it may not have been the right way, I’m proud that I was able to do it. Only issue being it was so hurtful to me that I’m terrified to end toxic friendships now, and entire different issue </3

Maybe it makes me seem kind of pathetic, but in all honesty, 2022 Talent Show, there was a group that were told not to perform a specific song that they auditioned with ([bad word] the police) because it was something the theater teacher wasn't allowed to have played. Well, they played Lithium by Nirvana, but they bribed the person opening and closing the curtains to leave it open, they bribed their fellow bandmates from band to cheer them on, to advocate for a second song (when they were supposed to only do one, and one that was approved.), and they defied what the theater teacher was telling them to do. I had no idea what to do. I knew it wasn't supposed to happen.

I never mention it, but what I did do is make my way around to the other side of the stage while the principal and theater teacher were making their way from the back of the house to the stage, and I was getting ready to close the curtains before they finished the song. I was next up to host the next group so with what they did, I didn't know what to say.. or do. I will say, they were performing in the second half of the show, so during intermission while they were getting set up, they were going around offering bribes to people to do what they wanted them to do. I didn't take it, but at the same time I was very confused, until I saw why. My co-host was also confused. She also did not take the bribe.

So I guess my act of courageousness is that I didn't take the bribe and that I was going to close the curtains? The reason I say that is because, perhaps courage isn't super bold, but it's the choices you make. Closing the curtains is an act of initiative. Not taking the money was not giving in to peer pressure.

Another scenario. It's daunting to be deaf, surrounded by hearing people, worried that you'd be judged every which way, every move you make. I loved public school, don't get me wrong, but I never fit in. The first time I ever "acted" and the last time, before high school, was in elementary school productions of The Three Little Pigs (Big Bad Wolf), Pinocchio (Pinocchio), and The Giving Tree (as the Giving Tree). I was so bloody scared in 2022 Spring when I was auditioning for the first time in a long while (not including talent shows) because it required me to sing and have a monologue. The show was Footloose.

Hell, I was a horrible singer, and I am well aware of it. That's why I was so scared to do that audition, the monologue was nothing, even though I was a bit nervous I'd fumble, the singing was the worst part. I had to sing a song. I panicked waiting for my turn, and when it was my turn, my heart beat so fast that it felt like it was barely thudding.

I made it onto the stage and I did my monologue then the music turned on, and I had to sing. You couldn't even hear me in the back of the house. Nor in the pit. My brows sweat, my hands twitched, my eyes paced back and forth. I was scared. I still attempted to sing anyways.

Needless to say, I became Principal Clark in Footloose, and I just had to mouth the songs (thank god, but I didn't get that chance in Frozen :( I actually had to sing :/)

So what is the courageousness in this story? I faced my anxiety, my fear head on. I still tried to sing, I still did my monologue. I didn't run out of the theater or change my classes or change my school because of how scared I was and how humiliated I was afterwards (It was also the only musical audition that I had that was in front of a crowd of people so ;-;)

Clue. Fall 2022. As said, I'm not new to acting, but luckily this production was not a musical. (thankfully). My problem was not auditioning as it was the semester before, it is rather because of a mean girl and of the boy who hated me. God, I hate them both. They triggered my anxiety, my discomfort.

Clue, we were in November, a month before the performance in where I was set to play Mr. Boddy, when rumors came out, completely false as they were, that destroyed me and people's reputation with me. No one wanted to hang out with me. They made up rumors about me in the boys dressing room. They later confessed it was false. They made up rumors that would get me arrested and later also confessed it was false. This started how?

I offered to help someone write their little simple bio for the playbill on snapchat. Well, I got yelled at and fussed at, and I will say that whole scenario made me incredibly sad, in terms of making me cry. I said "I'm sorry to hear that [name], would you want to go do [fun thing that is incredibly local so I cannae dox :sob:] with us?" to a girl.

She went off her rocker antagonizing me. I got snaps from other people that were friended with them that told me to stop and to just quit it. Not long after, we were trying costumes on for rehearsals and one thing I never talk about, is how I was supposed to die the second time around and when I was thrown onto the desk into the study, it felt personal.

I continued getting messages talking bad about me. I continued being hurt. But I still showed up. Did I talk to anyone outside of speaking my lines? No. Later I found that this continued on instagram.

This is the reason I no longer use instagram or snapchat.

I reported it to the principal, for cyberbullying, and when the girl and the boy got in trouble, they made it worse for me by creating rumors that destroyed me. I lost people that i thought were friends. I lost someone that I thought was my best friend.

Good god, I didn't think my heart could sink any lower. I was in tears. I was depressed. I was anxious and I was scared. But I never stopped being Mr. Boddy for clue. I didn't quit. I pursued.

I did my best to avoid the two, to hope that it wouldn't get worse. Eventually, the theater teacher decided to tell the girl that she wasn't allowed to join Frozen if I was on it. I was, but you should know that I switched my classes initially before theater teacher begged me to be in theater for this show, so I switched it back.

Frozen 2023 Spring. The entire three months upon the end of winter break was me being so uncomfortable so scared to sing and talk and look at the girl that was responsible for ruining me (because she would keep coming in and taking part in the show's choreo and rehearsals even though she wasn't in it). I even had an amythest necklace I would fiddle with every time I got anxiety and fear. I fiddled with it a lot that semester.

Needless to say, I eventually got over it by doing private singing sessions with someone who works at a dinner theater who was helping us, and with someone who teaches choir at a college, so I was trying to learn my lines and my notes. I just couldn't do it if she was around. I couldn't stand to be around someone who I thought was my best friend either. When the show rolled around, I stuck with it, taking on the facade of my characters (ensemble in frozen).

Show ended. Graduation rolled around. I was part of the choir singing Homeward Bound, and this was alongside the boy and the girl. I would pretend they weren't there. After that, I severed all my bonds with people I knew in high school, except for the best friend I made that semester that couldn't even stand for what my ex-best friend did.

So in this long story.. what are the courageous moments? I reported the cyberbullying. I didn't quit from my roles just because I was uncomfortable and anxious and scared. I severed my ties for my well-being. I shared a stage with people I did not like. I'm still hurt and I guess you could say, scarred. But I grew resilience and was able to face things head on.

Wow, Clark. That just opened up whole new vistas for me with respect to how I see you and will forever think about the real you. Thank you so much for sharing such hard, defining moments from your past. 💛

You mention only three instances of bravery, but I'd say there were at least four. Expressing all that you just did here is a brave act in and of itself, whether you realize it or not. You said something early on that is a truth too many folks in their 40s and beyond never grasp and it was this: "...perhaps courage isn't super bold, but it's the choices you make." I say Amen to that! Courage, to paraphrase the saying, doesn't mean you go through life unafraid of people or situations, but rather, you face those people or situations fully aware that there could be a price to pay for doing so, but you do it anyway.

Courage, as you found out with the bribery story, is contagious. Even little flickers of it can lead to greater things beyond yourself. OOC, I spend most of my days battling the onslaught of tyranny that has raised its ugly hydra heads here in the States. I would be a liar if I said I that what is happening to my countrymen and others worldwide does not scare me, or that by simply doing my job and speaking truth to power makes me, and my family, targets for no other reason than holding a different viewpoint. Yet, what keeps me returning day after day is the courage I see and feel and hear from others around me, and increasingly, from others around the nation, who are finding their own voices and speaking their own truths to power.

That is real and can be utterly transformative and regenerative, no matter on what scale it happens. Like you said, it is all about choices. Stand for something (or someone), or stand for nothing. Standing for nothing because it is safe just shackles people in a bubble with a false sense of security, leaving them in a fear state beneath the surface. No thank you.

For all of you who were bullied/are bullied and shared your stories as well, my thanks go out to you too. You may just never know whom you have inspired here today, but I'd wager each of you did in one way or another.

IC, I think the bravest thing AF ever did was to listen respectfully as Haley Rose told her off at the Sweetheart's Tea Party in 2022, and then again as Pax Zhang expressed her feelings of anger and resentment towards AF, on behalf of her friend, Haley Rose, after Haley and Simon broke up. AF managed to acknowledge Pax's feelings without getting all defensive, but still stood by her decision. Even OOC there was quite a bit of personalized, behind the scenes drama directed at me regarding the Simon-Haley-AF storyline at the time, none of which came at me from Haley or Pax, btw.

OOC - Not gonna lie, I don’t have much to say since I don’t really put myself out there. But if it counts, I guess heading into STEM even though I’d never taken an interest in it until the past few years, and highly doubted my ability to do so. Actually I still doubt my abilities, but I’m trying to stick with it instead of giving up.

There's nothing to say IC yet cuz Bea's new.

OOC: I've disappointed a lot of people in my life because I keep messing up a lot more than people of or around my age do. It was difficult for me to make things right or learn from my mistakes and it made me feel guilty, embarrassed and insecure. I started being extremely harsh on myself just so that people wouldn't be disappointed in me. I got so busy pleasing people that I started to neglect myself. Finally, this one person never met her IRL but she's lowkey a role model of mine  entered my life about a few months ago and changed my way of perceiving things. Thanks to her, I've learnt to be honest with myself and stopped being a people pleaser. I've stopped pressurizing myself and learnt to appreciate and love myself. <3 <3 I still find it somewhat hard to learn from my mistakes but I'm working on it. I'm just a high school girl with minimal experience, so this is all I got heheheh

IC- Mylo has quite often struggled with being in charge and being confident so having applied for (and gotten) the position of prefect was a big step for them. Which has also helped them gain more confidence.

OOC: I feel as though a lot of times I confuse the word "courageous" with "risk taker." I tell myself that all I'm just not a risk taker, like that excuses my lack of courage. I tell myself that anything in my life is just weighing the pros and cons. But usually, I'm just scared.

And this is going to sound really dumb here, but I recently finally told someone that I needed to see a therapist. That was hard. Unimaginably hard. Not because of what it is in itself, but because sometimes I don't feel that I have an adult I can trust to tell it to. I'm not far off from being an adult though, and I spent a lot of sleepless nights knowing that it was a step I needed to take. And it's small, it's not like standing up to people, or moving forward like a lot of these stories are, but I'm proud of myself nonetheless.

Because maybe that can be the step that snowballs.

OOC-When I was younger, there was a group of bullies at school. I know that that sounds very storyish, but to me it was very real and terrifying. They bullied me a lot, as well as a bunch of other kids in my class. For a while, no one stood up to them, and they just got worse. One day, a shy girl who the bullies liked to pick on tried to fight back. She talked back to the bullies, and they started to get physical. I was standing near her, trying to pretend I wasn't seeing it.

I think that that day I cracked. I was tired of getting pushed around and being afraid of a bunch of bullies. So I walked over to them, and stamped down on my mounting terror. Then I told the bullies to stop, and that they were being mean. Of course, they just laughed at me, but it meant the world to the shy girl. She and I became friends, and now she is my best friend and we text constantly. So being brave was very very worth it.

I don't break the rules, I expand them for my need.
