Eldred had quite a busy time. A few days had passed since Kostas had given him the painful bruise, and now it was barely visible - only a hint of yellow on his jaw was evidence of the attack. The swelling had completely disappeared since the morning after, and his appetite was restored thanks to his friend Syrah.
There was still way too much going on in the Gryffindor’s life, hence it shouldn’t have been surprising that the first-year student hadn’t even thought about the Spring Ball. It in fact wasn‘t on his mind whatsoever.

After a secret midnight trip to the Room of Requirements with his blonde friend and a morning of homework, it was time for dinner at last. Eldred’s stomach growled as he walked through the large wooden door into the Great Hall. Most of the students were already there, but definitely not all of them.
Usually, they came in waves around the time when dinner was served.
A few, however, already had spent their afternoon there - meaning they ultimately sat on their table before even the first dish appeared on its wooden surface.

Through his gray eyes, the young teenager scanned the long Gryffindor table and benches. Once again, the intention was to track down Kostas and deliberately sit as far away from him as possible. He wasn’t afraid, but he simply wanted to avoid facing him for the time being. One bruise was enough for the month! As his gaze swept over the room, it was drawn like a magnet to the familiar figure of a pretty brown-haired boy. Sebastian Drake was sitting at their House-table, in front of a filled plate—and was he… hunching over?! For a moment, Eldred was startled in concern! He took a few quick steps toward his Friend, tense and full of the worst sort of fear.

Only for that tension to escape him in immediately in a relieved sigh, once he got closer. The student realized that Sebastian wasn’t contorting from stomach cramps, but was sitting at the table with an item in his hands. Now his curiosity was piqued! What could it be? It looked like paper—small and rectangular. It must be special, considering it drew Sebastian‘s attention to this degree.

Eldred trudged his way over to his best friend with a casual quick pace. There, with a “Good evening!” in an overly polite, humorous tone, he wandered around the other boy and sat down on the bench beside him. He couldn’t hide his curiosity from his face. It was evident in his sparkling grey eyes, and spread into a smile on his features.
What’s that paper you have there..?” he inquired quietly and forced himself not to lean over and steal away from Sebastian’s privacy. After all, maybe Sebastian didn’t want Eldred to see it.

After a rather eventful day with a letter from his mom, sending his first owl mail(outside of Hogwarts) and running into Yuki in the owlery, Sebastian was relaxing by the Gryffindor table at dinner. His plate was full but largely untouched, seeing he was too busy still staring at the photo he’d received to feel hungry. Sebastian hadn’t been able to stop looking at it, burning all the details into his memory. It almost felt like he could transport himself back in time to when it was taken to fill in the gaps of his parent’s relationship. Obviously he couldn’t— not that there were many gaps to fill since it had ended as soon as it began, but it answered some questions.

Sebastian glanced up when he heard an enthusiastic, polite voice beside him. ”Hey.” He smiled easily at Eldred, who seemed to be completely back to normal again. ”You look well.” Funny enough, Sebastian had told him just the other day that he wouldn’t get into fights, alas he was accosted in the bathroom. Though he was yet to fill him in on that event.

It was clear that Eldred could barely contain curiosity when he asked about the paper in his hand. Grinning, he looked down at the photo again, holding it up closer to the his friend so he could have a look. Sebastian grabbed Eldred’s wrist and guided him down to sit beside him. ”I got it in the mail this morning. From my mom.” Although they hadn’t spoken about his and his mother’s relationship to its full extent, he expected his friend to realise what a monumental event this was to Sebastian. If he recalled correctly, he had told Eldred that he saw his mother once a year on average--- Before he had moved to boarding school. He hadn’t gotten any mail from his dad either, since he was a muggle.

”She found this old photo in some old boxes or something.” Sebastian pointed out the baby in the picture, ”that’s me!” If it wasn’t obvious already. Why his mother would send him a picture of a random baby, he didn’t know. Maybe to rub it in his face and make him jealous or something, but that felt out of character for the woman he looked up to. Granted he didn’t know her well enough to know all her negative traits. It was difficult to imagine her having any bad traits, unless you counted ditching your boyfriend and baby after he’s born, that was.

It made his heart jump naively to receive a compliment from Sebastian. Even if it wasn’t really meant as such – but rather an observation about Eldred‘s improved health. The 12-year-old smiled back brightly and was quickly invited to sit next to his best friend, or rather, he was guided to. The comfort between them filled Eldred with an endless ocean of gratitude.

When it came to the news about Sebastian’s mail, Eldred widened his grey eyes for a moment. A spark shimmered and flashed in them next. He remembered during their sleepover how the other boy had talked about his parents, and the topic of letters and mail had come up. Back then, Eldred had felt that it maybe wasn’t that important to Sebastian. The attention on the photo and the smile proved something completely different. It warmed Eldred’s heart. He curiously looked at the photo while listening to the explanation.

His gaze moved over the paper, admiring the beautiful blonde young woman, a handsome man with brown hair, and, of course, the cutest baby in the world – Sebastian Drake. Eldred’s mouth twisted into the most enchanted smile he had ever worn! "That’s so wonderful that you received a letter!" Eldred replied with so much warmth and honesty in his voice that even he found it unusual to hear himself this obviously filled with joy.

The Happiness for his friend Sebastian was far greater than most of what he had ever been able to feel for himself – although Eldred was generally a friendly and happy person. He briefly glanced at Sebastian, checking his nose, lips, and features before his gaze dropped back to the photo. "You were such a cute and sweet baby... you really look like your mom, you’re both beautiful..." Eldred explained next. His voice grew quieter and clearer. To him this wasn’t even just his opinion, but a simple fact. Sebastian was beautiful, just like the blonde woman in the photo.

The baby – Sebastian – was adorable, he wished the photo was magical and could move. He would have loved to see the boy he crushed on laugh as a baby.
"You got your dad’s colors…but you really got so much from your mom..." Eldred said, his eyes were filling slowly with curiosity. "Are you going to frame the photo?"
His heard turned to Sebastian, eagerly wondering what he would do with the photo. Maybe the boy would hide it in a box, secret and private? Or would he hang it on the wall? Eldred really wanted to know what he planned to do with it.
Meanwhile, a full plate had appeared in front of Eldred, but so far, he simply ignored it. The topic of conversation was far too interesting to turn his attention to eating.

Eldreds observation about him getting his dads ‘coloring’ was correct yet reminded him of something from his childhood. He was over it now, obviously— brown hair couldn’t sully his gorgeous appearance, but being brunette had seemed like a death sentence to six year old Sebastian. At the time he’d wanted nothing more than to be more like his mom. Maybe because she was this mythical figure in his life, meanwhile his dad was just… dad. Of course he was handsome, model and all, but he wasn’t near the beauty that was Angelice. And if there was something Sebastian wanted, it was to be perfect.

“You shouldn’t have said that to me six years ago.” Sebastian pouted playfully, nudging him with his elbow. “You know, when we found out I was magical it was when I accidentally turned my hair blonde to look more like her. I absolutely hated being a brunette! I thought it would make me average.” Obviously that was the furthest from the truth. Brunette or not, Sebastian was a showstopper, and he knew it. At least he got most of his other traits from her. Vanity and a fixation with his appearance was probably one of them, too.

Eldred asked him if he was going to frame the photo and Sebastian hummed. “Yeah, I think so! I would need to find a nice frame. Maybe… pink?” He said it jokingly, but they both knew that was his go-to color.

He looked at the photo again, unable to tear his eyes off his stunning mom. “I don’t really have any photos of us together, even if this was 11 years ago!” Sebastian held up the photo beside his face to make the point; A bit outdated with his current appearances, but better than nothing to a boy who had nothing. In terms of memories.

“I wish we had more together as a family…” Seb sighed, before continuing down a topic he rarely, if ever, spoke about. “Dad’s girlfriends are always nice, but sometimes I wonder what it would be like to be a real family, you know?” Eldred had a real family, he should know what he meant. Then he shook himself out of it, thinking positively. "Well, I'm happy she sent me a letter at all. At least she's thinking about me."

The little nudge with the elbow shifted Eldred's attention from the photo completely to what Sebastian was about to say next. What he said, the boy could hardly believe.
He immediately looked up at Sebastian’s face and studied the color of each brown hair strand. Something tightened in his stomach at the thought of Sebastian being blonde all of sudden. "I’m glad you are the way you are…" he murmured almost absentmindedly, his eyes still scanning back and forth over the hairstyle.

The brown-haired Gryffindor loved blonde hair. He could never get enough of it, especially when the sun reflected off of it, making it shine like gold. But the thought of Sebastian being blonde took his breath away - in an unpleasant kind of way. Maybe it would have been different if Eldred had first met his friend as a blonde and didn’t already like him with this hair color! The change was too much for him—too much for Eldred's own emotions. He pushed the thought aside and fervently hoped, for everything he held dear, that Sebastian wouldn't dye his hair one day. Of course he can‘t deny or forbid anything and even giving sound to his thoughts would feel manipulative and wrong. Eldred's ability to adjust to new things simply wasn't very well developed—at least not when it came to people and environments which he hold dear.

As for the frame topic, he pushed the thought of blonde hair straight away. A grin followed. Sebastian's devotion to this color was enchanting. It suited him, Eldred thought. He wouldn’t be surprised if one day he stumbled into Sebastian’s room and found the photo actually in a pink frame with soft contours, fur and feathers.
Eldred rested an arm on the table and was in the middle of thinking about where one could buy such a frame. Nothing came to mind in Hogsmeade, and then Sebastian sighed, and a new seriousness settled over their conversation. Eldred’s grin disappeared, replaced by a focused, soft expression.

Maybe it only seemed this serious to the twelve-year-old; simply because the topic affected him emotionally. Sebastian’s family clearly wasn’t as close as the Grayswells. It was a family type of privilege that only one of them had. The twelve-year-old felt an unexpected pang of sympathy, almost wishing he could share even a little of that family happiness with sebastian in exchange for a loss of his own. He wondered about how to cheer his friend up. Showing pity probably wouldn’t be the right approach.

To him, Sebastian didn’t seem like someone who would appreciate it. Still, Eldred placed his hand gently on his arm and squeezed him softly. "I'm sure she thinks about you a lot. Some parents just show it differently than others—my dad always says that about my grandparents. You know, now that you’re here at Hogwarts, maybe you could ask how to make magical photos. Or we could look for a book about it in the library. We should try get hands on a camera for you in Hogsmeade, and the next time you spend time with your parents, you could take moving magical photos. Then you'll eventually have a lot of magical pictures with them and won‘t even know where to store them all." The twelve-year-old suggested with a friendly smile then glanced at the photo in Sebastian's hand. "That photo is really great, though.... do you know where you're going to hang it or put it?"
