Two Heads Aren't Better Than One

2 February 2025
"Right! Let's do this thing!" Liam's voice called out to Colin as they charged through the courtyard and down towards the broom racing track! "OWOOOO!!" Colin's voice called back and they chased each other all along the path! Their laughter rang out on the dreary February morning. The damp might get some kids down, sending them to curl up in a cosy arm chair before a warm fire; but not the McCoire twins!
Colin had long wanted to take his friend Shia out for a fly, only her chair was a bit bulky. He had been thinking about this problem for a while, and together with Liam, they began hatching a cunning and brilliant plan! Naturally, two heads are better than one, and what could possibly go wrong when one of those is the brilliant Ravenclaw and the other the cunning Slytherin?
Down at the track at last, the boys set to work. They were eager to test out their theories and were completely self-assured of absolute success. "It's really sweet of you to do this Cail," Liam said. "Though I'm really surprsied no one's invented a flying chair yet!"
"Right? Ye'd think that would be the obvious next step in wizarding flight. I'll bet even the Muggles haven't thought of flying in chairs yet! And anyway, Shia shall be the fastest wheelie chair girl in all Hogwarts!" Colin really did wonder. "I mean. If you can enchant a broom to fly, what not just enchant a chair? After all, chairs are wood, and so are brooms."
"Right?" replied Liam. "I mean. It stands to reason. We can levitate a chair or a sofa or anything really. Hmm. Think about it Cail. If we could make a flying a bed, people could fly long distances whilst napping! Brilliant!"
The boys sorted out their equipment as they talked. "Right. Proper experimentation calls for proper equipment."
"Goggles ---" began Liam.
"--- check!" finished Colin.
"Helmets ---"
"--- check!"
"Vailerama ---"
"--- check!"
"What's our other broom's name?"
"--- check!"
Colin blinked. "Wait. What?"
"Ye weren't paying attention, were ye Cail? Ye've got that far away look in yer eyes." Liam narrowed his own eyes with a smirk. "Eyes of Sky?" he teased.
"Shutitliam," Colin replied with a blush.
Liam snickered. "Did we ever come up with a name for the second broom?"
"I---" Colin thought about it. He couldn't remember naming it. To be honest, Liam had spent more time flying it that he had. "Go on! Give him a name then!"
Liam smiled. "Rothinzil."
"Excuse you?" Colin said. "What kind of name is that, Liam?"
"You know? Vingilot?" Liam replied, eyebrow raised.
Colin blinked. "Oh! Earendel's ship! But --- what ---?"
Liam sighed and shook his head. "You need to read more Cailean! Rothinzil is the Adunaic name for Vingilot!"
Colin gave Liam a look of admiration. Of course! The Numenoreans spoke Adunaic as well as Sindarin. It stood to reason they might name things in both languages! "Then let it be Rothinzil! We shall have brooms named in both languages! I think we're all ready!" Colin felt every bit as excited as Earendil the Mariner must have felt when sailing the western course. His heart thumped as the moment spproached!
Ēala ēarendel, engla beorhtast,
ofer middangeard monnum sended,
ond sōðfæsta sunnan lēoma,
torht ofer tunglas, þū tīda gehwane
of sylfum þē symle inlihtes!
"I'm certain this will work, Cail! Ye just have to point both brooms in the same direction and ye're golden! What can possibly go wrong?" Even so, Colin was certainly glad that Liam would be standing by to mitigate any disaster that might befall. Colin snugged his helmet and adjusted his goggles.
"Up! Up!" he cried to the brooms.
The brooms hovered as they should, varying somewhat in height from the ground. Nothing he couldn't handle for sure! Colin nudged Vailerama and Rothinzil closer together. For some strange reason, they refused to get too near. In fact, it seemed quite impossible to stick them together. Colin shrugged. At least he wouldn't smash his fingers between the two shafts! With a cheerful bow to his twin, Colin leapt up onto Vailerama, his bare feet balancing him on the familiar wood, and he settled himself down, straddling both brooms. So far so good!
Colin kicked off the ground!

✽Avery heard voices coming from the Outdoor Club Area. She was planning on going to the Quidditch Training Pitch again, but curiosity overwhelmed her. She wondered what trouble was happening there this time. She knew that there was always something crazy happening somewhere. What else would she expect? It is Hogwarts, and Hogwarts is full of surprises.
As Avery approached the Area, she glanced up and saw a broom. No. Two brooms in the sky, but only one person. Weird. Why is there only one person, but two brooms. Then she saw someone that looked familiar, but instead of with Slytherin colors, he had Ravenclaw.
"Hey. Is that who I think it is flying in the sky and causing chaos?" Avery asked the other boy as she watched Colin flying through the sky on two brooms.
She hadn't expected her day to start with this. Actually, this was probably going to be a lot more fun than what else she would have done. Maybe she should join him in the sky? Or maybe it was just safer on the ground. Though, she gripped the school broom in her hand tighter. Awaiting the outcome of what was going to happen to her friend. ✽

ReducioKaitlyn had some free time today. Her schoolwork was already completed. Demeter had been fed earlier and was now sleeping soundly in her dorm. While she normally used damp and cold days like this to snuggle with a good book, she wanted to try something different. Flying was … well, difficult for her. When she first experienced flying, it was scary! It took some time … and some help … for her to feel like she wasn’t about to fall off at every turn she completed.
Being the muggle-born witch that she was, Kaitlyn was unable to practice flying at home. So, only when she was at Hogwarts that the young Slytherin heading to the Quidditch pitch, carrying a school broom with her. She wanted to try to practice flying again … maybe at low altitudes again. Maybe she could eventually have the confidence to join one of the Slytherin teams. She had to admit, broom racing and Quidditch looked exciting. At least, that was from the stands.
With her fingertips nervously strumming against the broom’s handle, Kaitlyn skipped through the broom racing track … only to stop when she noticed something eventful happen. An older Slytherin … one she remembered told a story once in the Common Room to scare first years last year … was in the air with … wait, was that two brooms? Wasn’t his name … Colin? And there was another boy … that looked identical in Ravenclaw robes. ‘Twins … like Abby and I,’ she thought. Her free hand nervously played with the hem of her skirt, unsure of what was happening in front of her. She also spotted a Gryffindor girl talking to the Ravenclaw boy.
“Hi,” Kaitlyn greeted the Ravenclaw and Gryffindor shyly. She glanced at Colin, who was grappling with two brooms and then at the other two. “Am I right to assume this is not a safe spot to practice flying?” She asked.Word Count:

It was sunday morning. For Christina this meant, like most mornings, that this would be the best time to get some exercise in. She decided to start by going on a walk, as she hadn't decided what she wanted to do yet. Usually she loved to run, but this morning she woke up with some pain in her leg, so she had to think of something else.
As she was walking past the broom racing track, Christina heard a whole bunch of ruckus and decided to check it out. After all, who doesn't love a sudden adventure when it comes on your path? Walking closer, she noticed a group of two girls and one boy talking to each other. That's strange, she thought, how could this group cause this much ruckus? That's when Christina looked up and saw a boy flying on two brooms. She was about to walk away when it clicked. Two brooms!?
Deciding this was exciting enough to check out, Christina jogged over to the group. Looking closer, one of the girls seemed to be in Gryffindor, one in Slytherin, and the boy was a Ravenclaw. Even though she didn't know any of them, she couldn't hide her curiosity, and decided to speak up. "Hi there!", she said, lightly panting from the jog. She started rubbing her aching leg before continuing to speak. "What's going on? Are we flying? Why is this guy flying on two brooms!?", she continued, before realising the others would probably be taken aback by her energy. She did notice one girl appeared to be rather shy, so she decided to calm down a little, getting lost in her own thought.
Christina hasn't done a lot of flying since she went to Hogwarts. She grew up in the muggle world, even though her father was a pureblood. This meant she never had the opportunity to fly before Hogwarts either. She knew her little sister always wanted to get on a broom and fly, but she herself was content with staying on the ground. Perhaps it would be fun to join this weird experiment in order to get more comfortable with flying?

✽Avery smiled and laughed at the other two girl's confusion. It was evident that they had no idea what was going on or why Colin was doing this. "Oh. That's just Colin being Colin. I wouldn't exactly call it safe to fly though. This could get quite chaotic." Avery said as she tried to hide another laugh. She gripped her school broom tighter. Unsure of whether to join her crazy healer friend or not.
For now, she decided she was going to stay on the ground. Though, if things got chaotic in the air, she was prepared to fly. It would be a lot more fun to watch from the ground rather than be in the line of fire for Colin's crazy plan. Avery just hoped he wouldn't kill himself or someone else with whatever crazy plan he had in mind.
Avery watched Colin maneuver the brooms. She wondered why he was using two brooms instead of one. She had seen enough of Colin's flying to know that he could be pretty chaotic when it came down to just one broom he was riding. This was pretty much going to be double the chaos, and Avery couldn't wait to see it. ✽

Quiet Time with @Colin McCoire - @Avery Gray - @Christina Rose and @Kaitlyn Connor
Emily was hanging on by a thread. Another rough night since it happened. The mark may have been on its better behaviour in recent days but that didn't stop it from being a complete horror show at night. Belligerent voices that bullied and followed Emily like her own personal shadows weren't enough form of torture for her. No, she had to be subjected to fearful, sweat-inducing nightmares too. Last night wasn't like the regular ones she had been having; this time, instead of falling into a pit of abyssal tar while faceless dolls laughed at her, she was chained against a wall and forced to bear wounds inflicted by dark manifestations of the people she cared about.
Emily walked across the grounds like she could fall over her feet at any moment, hoping the cold air would keep her awake. She felt lightheaded but wouldn't collapse. She was slightly pale in the face and the small circles under her eyes were becoming ever so slightly more noticeable. If she could, she would take a nap in the grass and steal back the sleep she had been losing. However, that was just the perfect type of goading the voices needed to jump her with more insults and mockery, if not more nightmares to pile on top of her nightly ones. Staying awake was therefore her only option, even if it was, by all things considered, another layer of torture for her to do so. Her eyes were stinging from lack of sleep as it was.
She fell against the side of a tree when she felt too tired to carry on. Slumping to the ground, she shut her eyes to rest them. She pulled them awake again when she heard the echoes of a few familiar voices.
She peeked through the bushes. Colin was in the air on his broom. Hardly a surprise but still a welcome one. He was quite the entertaining bloke. His mirror-image twin, Liam, was on the ground, looking like he was counting down the seconds of when disaster would struck. Avery was there too, a face Emily recognised after both of them spectated Colin's broom race with Gryffindor. Another Gryffindor girl was with them though Emily couldn't possibly name her, having never seen her before. And then there was Kaitlyn whom Emily hadn't seen in what felt like eons. Last time with her must've been when she and her were cleaning down the greenhouse together.
She couldn't muster any energy to go over and talk with them. She doubted she could even trust herself to stay awake and keep a conversation rolling. Instead, she continued to hide behind the trees and bushes from quite a distance away. This far out, no one would notice her unless they went actively seeking for her.
It was better if she wasn't found anyway. Not when she was reduced to what she was now.

ReducioKaitlyn tilted her head to the side when another Gryffindor girl came over to the growing scene. It was almost as if they were a crowd of onlookers, watching the spectacle of the amazing flying Colin, balancing on two brooms high up in the air. What could possibly go wrong?
Sadly, Kaitlyn knew absolutely no healing spells or potions. From what she could gather, that would be next year in her third year. For now, she’d have to try her best to be … at least supportive of the situation. She looked to the newer Gryffindor. “Hi,” she greeted her shyly. The first Gryffindor girl commented about the potential chaos before she could say anything else about the situation. It looked like a very good possibility! “I agree, Colin can be chaotic,” she agreed.
Gripping the school broom tighter, Kaitlyn looked at the flying acrobatics Colin was attempting. It was certainly … something? Good, bad, who knew what it was going to be? It looked like he was playing a game of roulette … where the board was still spinning … almost like it was waiting for the prime moment to strike!
Given Colin’s situation, it was likely unsafe for her to practice flying. That was the last thing Kaitlyn needed, just as she practiced to fly … was to hurt herself. She wanted to learn … and frankly enjoyed the challenge … but only when it was safe. “I hope he’s all right,” she mumbled.Word Count:

Two Heads Aren't Better Than One

Colin beamed! Everything was going just as they'd worked out on parchment! He made some nice slow turns around Liam and a gathering of other kids who came to watch their triumph of arithromantic broom flying prowess! Colin smiled and waved at the kids just a few feet below him. He could see that Liam had his notebook open, eagerly pointing out all the equations and queer graphs and things they'd worked out over the last few months.
"Right?" Liam said excitedly in reply to the questions about what was going on. "Two brooms being flown by one person! It's never been done before, but look!" he said, waving about the notebook. "We did all the calculations and everything! We even took into account the different characteristics of the brooms! See? Vailerama is the Silver Arrow and Rothinzil is the Cleansweep II!" Liam jabbed his finger at what looked like two multicoloured sinuous and snakey curves sprawling across a grid. "That's a really fast broom, the Silver Arrow! Those can fly up to seventy miles an hour! The Cleansweep is fast, but it's more nimble going into tight turns! He has to balance velocity and angular momentum just right!"
As Colin continued the broad turning test, he caught sight of someone hiding in the bushes. He wondered who it was. Altering course slightly, he stopped paying attention to how his two brooms began to shudder in contrary motion. He saw her then. Emily! He heard Liam call up to him: "Oi! Cail! Pay attention lad! Stop staring at the girl! Cail! CAIL!!!"
CLACKCK!!
"OW! CRAP!" Colin cried out, releasing his grip on Rothinzil! He shook his hand, trying to ease the pain. The two broomsticks had smacked his fingers! With a suddenness that surprised Colin both brooms began to oscillate wildly! At the very last moment he grabbed hold of Rothinzil again and then all hell broke loose!
"YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!" Colin squeaked as his brooms suddenly turned vertical and shot skywards! The brooms fought against his tight grip! They were fighting each other, Colin thought! Rothinzil and Vailerama dashed themselves against each other, twisting about like mad scissors, and Colin's hands struggled to maintain their hold on the wood!
SNAP!
"NGNGNG!" Colin moaned as he heard a sickening snapping sound! It wasn't the broom shaft breaking, thank God! Pain shot up his left leg as the brooms violently tried to separate from each other! "I don't think my leg is supposed to stick out that way," Colin groaned. Certainly his shin bones weren't supposed to be sticking out!
THUNK! THONK!
Vailerama decided to make a sharp left whilst Rothinzil decided to make a sharp right turn, bonking his helmet on both sides! Momentarily turned into a pretzel, Colin's arms became twisted and entangled within the warring broomsticks! He felt his body spin around, as earth and sky flip-flopped. Something snapped in one of his arms, and he couldn't tell which one was broken!
He tried desperately to regain control of the brooms, and they tried just as desperately to fly around in different directions! Vailerama tipped one way and Rothinzil tipped the other! They began spinning around in circles as Colin lost all control, bonking his head and shoulders with each revolution! Somehow he managed to get his one good leg wrapped around the brooms and they replied by zooming vertical again, accelerating rapidly! Colin's left hand wouldn't respond properly. It felt numb. The brooms seemed to take this as their cue to dive! Still accelerating, Colin, Vailerama and Rothinzill all plummeted earthwards!
He could hear Liam shouting directions from down below, madly pointing at this or that equation in his notebook. The brooms started spinning about on their axes and Colin lost his grip entirely! They made a sudden turn to the left, throwing Colin off entirely! "Noooo, not again!" Colin said softly as the ground rose up to meet his falling body.
THUMP!
"UFF!" Colin's limp body made contact with the ground and he rolled and tumbled, coming to a stop at last at Liam's feet. He opened his eyes. Liam was looking down at him. Colin was looking up at Liam. He could feel the warmth of his own blood on his arm and leg and face. His goggles were long gone and helmet rolled off some distance away from his body. The only thing he didn't know --- where had his brooms gone off to?
Colin groaned. He didn't feel like moving. His limbs were splayed out on the cool grass. "You okay lad? That was brilliant Cail!" his twin said excitedly. Liam knelt down next to Colin's right shoulder. "Hopefully Vailerama and Rothinzil will be okay too! But I'm impressed! Ye kept it all together far longer than I thought ye would!" Colin thought back. How long had he even been flying? "I reckon you actually flew two brooms for a whole five seconds before everything went sideways!"
Colin couldn't believe it. A whole five seconds? "That was it? Seemed longer. I--- I think we might have miscalculated something important, Liam. Have to try ---" And then he saw them. His brooms must have zoomed back into the sky after they tipped him over the side. But now they were back in sight.
Vailerama.
Rothinzil.
It wasn't the first time Colin wondered if brooms had a sort of mind of their own. Twas actually thing of beauty, to see both brooms flying together, as if sharing a single purpose. For, there they were, matching course and speed. "Oh, craporific," Colin whispered. Everything hurt too much to even move. Colin could do no more than watch as both brooms plummeted.
THAMP! THUMP!
Colin's eyes crossed and he moaned softly. Both Vailerama and Rothinzil smashed straight into Colin, right where it hurt the most! With a sharp clatter of wood, they came to rest on the grass. Colin moaned, curling up in a world of pain. He could hear Liam chuckling softly. "Ngngng. Shutitliam," Colin managed softly.
Liam thumped Colin's chest affectionately as that special pain throbbed throughout Colin's body. "I reckon we need to get ye to hospital!" Liam said cheerfully. "But! Cail! Ye really do need to learn how to wear a Protective!" Colin looked into Liam's face. His twin was shaking his head slowly, smirking. Colin's eyes narrowed. Pro--- Wait. Protec--- No way! Those are a real thing!? Colin wondered.

Mellani was practicing flying on her silver arrow. She had learnt quite a few tricks, and was slowly getting faster and better. She had recently also caught a person from her team and kept him from falling, which made her just a little bit proud of herself.
As she was flying, she looked around and noticed someone flying in the outdoor club area? That couldn't be right. Outdoor club area was not safe for flying. Mellani, being the curious girl she was, flew towards the area just to investigate, and make sure everyone was fine. Quite a crowd had gathered to see a white-haired guy flying two brooms.
Mellani squinted and finally realized why that face looked similar. It was Colin. She should not even have been surprised at this point. It was so like Colin to do idiotic things such as this. "Colin, please stop before you fall down and hurt yourself", she yelled at him, while also flying closer.
Just as the words had left her mouth, everything went sideways. Colin screamed as both his brooms went out of control. Mellani tried her best to trail him, but it was way too confusing, and Mell had to make sure the brooms didn't hit her. It did not take long for Colin to fall down, and he was not wearing protective gear.
Mellani rushed to the ground near Colin and got off her silver arrow. His leg was bent at a weird angle, and he was definitely badly hurt. Enough to need to go to St. Mungos as soon as possible. To make things worse, both his brooms crashed into him. "Colin, what the hell were you thinking trying stunts like this?"
Mellani noticed Colin's twin brother also leaning over Colin. "We need to get him to the hospital. Now.", she said, hoping he listened to her. Gods, what was wrong with Colin?

Quiet Time with @Colin McCoire - @Avery Gray - @Christina Rose and @Kaitlyn Connor
Emily lost track of time the moment her eyes closed over. It could've been minutes or an hour she had laid there in a state of dosing against the hard tree behind her. In any case, it somehow felt long enough to recuperate some energy and wake up properly. She was still tired but she reckoned she gathered enough strength to stave off the fear of collapsing from exhaustion for... Let's say another fifteen minutes.
It was better than nothing!
Emily looked up to watch Colin faff about on... Two brooms? Whatever for? Who knows! But it was an idea only Colin could come up with. She smiled as she saw the entertaining faces on the group of girls - and Liam - that stood and watched him. She was honestly very good at bringing smiles to an audience. He ought to be a performer after he leaves Hogwarts or something, Emily mused quietly.
Then something caught his eye below him. With Emily's tired eye sight and with Colin being so far away, she wasn't sure what it was he was seeing but whatever it was, it was enough to allow time for the brooms to go awol without his concentration. A few twists, turns, zooms and splits later, Colin was off his broom and hit the ground beneath him like a human waterdrop, his body sprawled out in a mangled mess. The force of it all made Emily gasp frightfully.
"Colin!"
Emily got to her feet but stalled against the tree when she felt lightheaded. Grr. She hated that sensation of standing up too quickly that the brain goes all fuzzy! Now wasn't the time! Her buddy was hurt!
Then another girl flew over on her broom when it all happened. She heard the faint trace of instructions and something about the Hospital Wing was mentioned. Well of course, Colin needed medical attention. Even from all the way where she was standing, Emily could see the pretzel his leg had turned into. Yikes!
With the presence of the Slytherin girl that came over and commanding the situation, Emily saw no reason to go over now. She was barely able to concentrate with her lack of sleep. What help would she be trying to cart his broken rear to the Hospital Wing alongside the rest of the students that were rushing to help him?
Still... She wanted to be with someone that she thought for sure would help her to-- Nevermind...
She held back and hid in her spot, rubbing her eyes and swallowing a yawn when she felt a small wave of fatigue try to fight its way back to her. Yeah, there was no mission of her being able to help. Emily could see visions of her collapsing as soon as she would make her way over to them.
But that wouldn't stop her from seeing him in the Hospital Wing sometime later. She slunk away. Until she would next see him, Colin was in safe hands.
