Tuesday, February 11th. It is the day before all the Hogwarts students intending to participate in the Valentine's event will embark on their journey to Beauxbatons, the brain of this said event. It is kind of expected, of course, since Beauxbatons is located in France. Aurelia believes that everyone can agree with her that France is such a romantic country. It is also established that the young badger inherently despised Valentine's Day; however, travelling to an entirely different wizarding school other than Hogwarts is such a luxurious opportunity she could not just pass on. After perceiving the prospect that she'd spend a week in Beauxbatons, Aurelia checked out a lot of books regarding the said school and studied it feverishly. So much had happened since the beginning of February. She wholeheartedly anticipated the incoming mundanity this month would provide for her just like January had been, as the past month had been bleak; uneventful even. She did not expect it to be that disastrous. Mysterious potions had appeared in the Hufflepuff Common Room, which she guessed was smuggled by someone amongst them as no one could enter the Hufflepuff Common Room with the right rhythm of the supposed password. Not only that, the majority of her house had drunk it, some of them more than she could count with her fingers. Now, Aurelia perceived her house as majorly sensible, a house that isn't foolish. She did not perceive them all to be reckless; now she wondered if the Hat is just really an old, senile sorting tool and should retire. Aurelia felt like she's losing her darn mind over the recent events. Multiple students have been in a catatonic state; some hadn't woken up still and required them to stay in the Hospital Wing. She did not know if someone in Hufflepuff like her did not drink any at all, as she somehow never came across such a phial. She was busy reading The Philosophy of the Mundane after all these past few days, making her check out multiple books in the Legal Section of the Hogwarts Library, like The Muggle-Magic Conundrum: Interactions & Incidents and The Philosophy of Ignorance in Muggle Minds. Such mind-boggling reads; she wished she could talk about it to someone. However, she couldn't focus in these academic endeavours at all, as she was plagued by the fact that Mamori Anezaki and Clark Baird, the people she only knew who were currently in a vegetative state, are still somehow unhealed. Aurelia Valentine decided right then that she should unwind and clear her mind, for her soul was on the verge of succumbing to extreme distress and restlessness, in fear of the prospect of someone intending to harm her fellow badgers, and soon, other students too. The fact that someone is willing to consume an unlabelled potion with suspicious and promising effects without so much as thinking about it had been a surprising factor too, for that matter. It was, indeed, a disheartening week for the Hufflepuff House that it had been so constricting. Aurelia needs to get out from there, or else she'll have a massive breakdown. It was like there had been a greyish overcast over the Hufflepuffs too; everything is not exactly the same, and she was subconsciously aware of that. The young Hufflepuff witch chose the Boathouse as her unwinding spot instead. It was a long, steep and stony path, her winter boots almost gliding down from the melting snow that decorated over it. It was somewhat sunny, the sunlight softly streaming down and almost visible to which object it graces on, and she was almost convinced it was tangible. How beautiful, she thought, her deep brown eyes scouring the breathtaking view. The small Boathouse is just down the snowy path, but in order to reach it, one should hop down on oddly shaped rocks. It was somewhat silly and hilarious to her, and so she laughed for unknown reasons. She perhaps is already losing her mind. It's mid-afternoon; the sun blessed the Scottish Highlands with its light, which is rare; the danger is near; the Boathouse is down the path, and in between lay oddly shaped rocks and boulders. Who wouldn't laugh in such hilarity? Aurelia Valentine is so tired of constantly thinking. The young badger stopped in front of the uneven rocks, which led to the small boathouse. She always smiled so haughtily, an automatic expression, as though she was up to prove something. Not today though; her facial features are smoothed out as if she doesn't frequently worry, and she wore a rather delicate smile on her otherwise pretty face. Slinging her enchanted leather satchel more securely over her shoulder, she retrieved her black walnut wand from the pocket of her flared jeans before flicking it. “Bullarum Immortalem,” and there it was, a steady stream of golden tint of bubbles. It is such an easy charm; the golden bubbles surrounded her immediately like fluttering butterflies; the tip of her wand kept producing them like it was weaving the bubbles instead. It is so much fun! Aurelia laughed heartily, the sound echoing so much in this part of Hogwarts. Some golden bubbles stick to her wiry and untamed long curls. Containing her laughter, she stuck her foot forward before hopping on the oddly shaped rocks like a frog. “Hop... Hop... Hop…! Hop... Hop... Hop... Hop…! HOP! HOP!” She let out a huff when she reached the wooden platform of the boathouse. She was about to enter when she realised that she hopped nine times, an odd number. Her heart skipped a beat. That can't be; it has to be even. She slowly turned to the steep rocks behind her, her forehead creased and her lips pursed. She was snapped out of her thoughts—especially when she was contemplating if she should climb the rocks and start all over again—when a golden bubble popped right by her nose. The young Hufflepuff chuckled once again, turning to her black walnut wand as it seemed like it did not stop streaming gold-tinted bubbles. Let loose, Aurelia. As it did not matter if she used magic outside of class, or if she spent her life sticking to the rules, or how the Boathouse is somehow off-limits, or if she's adequately clever because today, she is meant to let loose and unwind. It is a form of survival tactic or anxiety will dominate her entire being. She twirled; it doesn't matter if she did it right, before entering the Boathouse. Numerous small boats are tied up above her and are floating, and if disturbed, might fall down to someone who is standing below. A few small boats are also tied near the docks, also floating but above lake water. A portrait of a man is currently busy writing and scribbling on his parchment, briefly lifting his bespectacled gaze towards Aurelia, who, from an outside perspective, might notice that her cheeks are flush, her smile welcoming and accommodating, her deep brown eyes staring curiously, and the long curls that cascade behind her back slightly swaying as she tilts her little head in inquisition. Golden bubbles surrounded her too, leaving tracks where she came from. The man quirked an eyebrow before going back to his scribbling, and the young badger did not attempt to disturb him from his task as she skipped towards the dock of the Boathouse. Letting out a sigh, her eyes scanned the beautiful view. The sun is currently setting; the waters of the lake are perfectly undisturbed, reflecting the assorted colours the sunset provides. Orange, yellow, and pink, somehow obscured by greyish clouds. Aurelia sat on the wooden dock, her winter boots barely reaching the lake waters. She laid her enchanted leather satchel beside her before watching the golden bubbles reflecting the view in front of her. If anyone were to notice these bubbles leaving tracks, they would be led towards the disheartened and sombre Aurelia Valentine. |

Teatime by the Boathouse

Vera was used to winters a bit more south and low, not too drastically but still enough to make a difference, especially in Scotland; it was such a relief to escape from the bleak greyness of Southwest Scotland. Come January, however, it was was if she never left. Days were short, the corner stones of Hogwarts all the greyer with the never-ending wetness permeating every surface... She would've been crawling up the walls from how hollow the grounds, otherwise bursting with life, felt if she wasn't so used to it from back home. So she spent more time at the library reading about Herbology or in the Great Hall with warm tea, observing the other occupants of the Castle who couldn't be pushed out of their homes by the whims of the climate.
Luckily, as February rolled around, winter finally started feeling less like an endless push and pull between snow and rain, and more like hopeful thawing. This time the melting snow sloshing against her boots sounded almost comforting as she made her way from the Ravenclaw Tower all the way down to the lake.
Her classes were over for the day and the sun was out for the first time in weeks. Normally she would've been full of pent-up energy, itching to run around the lake to her heart's desire, but not today. Today she'd just breathe it in.
She allowed herself just enough time to rush back into her dorm, exchange her smart trousers and shoes for a pair of warm cargos and boots, and she was out again. Her jacket wasn't even fully on her shoulders when the cold air brushed against her face for the first time. She settled on the slippery path down to the boathouse.
It made something in her twitch thinking that she hadn't been there since her first arrival to Hogwarts. She didn't even know magic existed 9 months ago...
Now one of the pockets of her cargos clanked against her thigh with the familiar weight of a wand and another had a few Chocolate Frogs cards in it, the pictures of famous wizard-folk squirming around in a way that would have her on edge not long ago.
With a sigh Vera leaned against one of the stone railings along the path.
She was slowly finding her place here. And winter was turning around! Soon there would be more for her to explore again, more Herbology stuff to look forward to that require only her own curiosity and some time spent outside. More...
Bubbles?
Was that bubbles by the boathouse?
The path was still winding a solid bit downhill, so it might have been just a trick of light from the sunset. It called to Vera nonetheless.
"One of these days..." she mumbled to herself and without any further judgement set off down the sludgy path.
Who knows what she'd find by the Lake. It had never been anything terrible before. Why worry now?
The closer she got to the edge of the water, the more did wind pull on the Ravenclaw-coloured scarf around her neck; it made her glad she actually brought it despite only rarely wearing a scarf these days. While she wasn't one to admit it, it was going to be a chilly evening and Vera was definitely not equipped for just hanging around places without moving.
She took the final bits, or rather jumps, of her journey with confidence. The door inside the boathouse was slightly open and more bubbles escaped from it every now and then. How odd.
Vera reached out to push slightly on the door. "Hello? Anybody here?"
The door creaked open a smidge further but Vera didn't push inside. Whatever or whoever was inside, she had a better chance of making friends than if she barged in just like that. She wouldn't have liked it herself.

There must be something rewarding within the stars, adequate for it to be perceived as something of utmost importance for Icarus to attain. Ovid depicted his arrogance by making Icarus unequivocally greedy to reach for the sun; his eyes, perhaps, expectant as the sunlight reflected the golden flecks of his blond locks. Aurelia wondered if it is tragic to desire the possibility of reaching the heavens, if it is all childish innocence disguised only by recklessness and avarice. Her deep brown eyes wandered, the pair of them following the golden-tinted bubbles she conjured, her black walnut wand still procuring them from the tip. Bullarum Immortalem. They do not pop, that is for sure. The sun peeped from the greyish, thick clouds, her raven-coloured curls appearing a little brown because of the sunlight. The sun is setting. It is still inherently cold, but it's February; the incoming arrival of spring in March can be felt just within the temperature and the fog that veils the Scottish Highlands. The young badger did not focus on that fact, of course, as her deep brown eyes zeroed in on the greyish cast overhead, her mind painting colours, vividly supposing that it was a bright sunny day. She could picture it, almost—the infamous fall of Icarus, the son of Daedalus. It is more of a tragedy if she reimagined the tale as something akin to The Creation of Adam, painted by Michelangelo, which forms a part of the infamous Sistine Chapel—in a different angle, of course. Wherein Daedalus, instead of searching for his son within the thick clouds, witnessed Icarus reach for something far greater than escape and watched as every bit of wax he built melted from the contraption he made whilst the ambitious Icarus basked in the allure and warmth of power the sun provided for him; the sunlight, as depicted. The alarmed and shocked father reached, of course, for his beloved son. Her brilliant mind could picture this retelling most definitely, where both of these fellows scream for each other's names, arms and fingers outstretched in order to touch the other. To no avail, as their story was not included in happily-ever-afters and all that nonsense, of course. The oceans embraced Icarus, perhaps snapping his back from the impact, as the splashes and the waves drowned the wails of Daedalus himself; Aurelia imagined the waters of the Great Lake to be heavily disturbed from Icarus' descent, the splashes even reaching the soles of her winter boots. Regrets are expected for Daedalus desiring escape from Minos, which cost him his son, and for Icarus desiring the possibility of reaching the heavens itself, which cost him his life. Well, it is a tragedy meant to dim down even the brightest of stars. Disaster. Devastation. Tribulations. Vicissitudes. February, her birth month, has been reduced to this collection of words she had used in her past articles before. The golden bubbles seem like a window of time wherein all badgers involved rushed towards the hospital wing, some of them dragging corpse-like fellow badgers whilst others carried one. Aurelia lets the tip of her winter boots submerge in the cold waters; it echoes the slight disturbance she made as ripples of water appeared, slowly dispersing as they rippled forward. No matter; if Hogwarts chose a singular witch or wizard as the only staff in the Hospital Wing, then the school deemed them as someone capable of healing select injuries and maladies, topped by Quidditch and all other dangerous sports, as well as accidents. Her heart inexplicably skipped a beat when she remembered how Mamori Anezaki, that stupid pink-haired badger, how his head lolled as though lifeless and his pink hair swayed, or how she remembered the temperature he abnormally emitted along with Clark Baird, the goblin Second Year, how the abnormal warmth burnt her palms. Again, no matter. That event is now only a thing of the past. They are all okay. An uncertain voice erupted from within the boathouse, which made Aurelia jump, her raven curls whipping as she whirled half of her body to stare at the entrance. The first thing that emerged in her mind was patrolling prefects, her mind frantically attempting to recall if she had read of something that forbade students from entering the boathouse, as it housed enchanted boats tied and floating overhead. She remembered nothing of the sort, just the fact that it was forbidden to swim in the lake itself for precautionary measures. Ruckus Weems, she thought, is not that strict. However, it's better to be safe. No one should expect students to memorise all rules along with educational decrees. Flicking her black walnut wand to stop the stream of golden-tinted bubbles from its tip, she grabbed her enchanted leather satchel before standing up from her seat on the wooden dock. In every step she executes with her winter boots, a soft, light creak can be heard. In a moment of slight trepidation, the sound made Aurelia perceive it as something that reverberates, loud enough to make ripples in the otherwise quiet and stable water. Peeking, her bushy curls already can be seen before her eyes could ever see the other door, which in the very end, he saw the door creak marginally open, but no one entered. The stream of golden bubbles eventually made its way towards the wooden door, slow, floating like balloons. Much to her chagrin, Aurelia has come to ascertain that the bubbles have become an indicator of her presence inside the boathouse. Waving it all away—to no avail, of course, as they never pop—she tiptoed, her deep brown eyes automatically landing on the portrait just scribbled earlier, giving him a warning as to not give her away. This young badger already perfected the fire-making spell; it will be of no remorse to her if she utilises the said spell to justify the means. This young Hufflepuff witch could be naturally clever but never a natural escapist at heart. For her, it is easier to exhibit accountability than bear the guilt for the rest of one's life. She has no idea if the boathouse itself is off-limits, as the only thing she remembered relating to it is the boats are properties of the school and therefore it is not allowed to be utilised for whatever means by a student. Ruckus Weems, the caretaker, perhaps could be appeased in order for the usage to be permissible. However, the Great Lake itself is dangerous; being pulled by a Giant Squid is a chance, but there are no records of such a thing, so the possibility could be brushed away. She could escape, but where? She does not know how to swim; besides, the water is cold. With a helpless expression on her face, she gave the portrait a look before approaching the faded wooden door. Own it; like how you own being initially haughty. Perhaps it is a curse to assess myths, to question a story where it advertised dreaming as something very much useless, to question the aversive notion to go and beyond, as the loud, jarring whistling emerged from her enchanted leather satchel. Horrified, it is a great distress for her to experience something that already happened only days ago, just in front of the double doors of the rehearsal room. The young badger searched for the wretched teapot, intending for it to stop whistling by whatever means. Her mind is blank; she could not conjure the memory of what she did to muffle the sound that rang on that fated day. If Matthew Campbell caught her listening to his broken melodies because of the whistling teapot, the person standing before this very door will no doubt catch her too—a prefect, perhaps, their quill ready in order to issue her very first detention. |
